How to get to Montenegro

One of the most important components of any trip is air tickets. Most tourists begin planning their vacation by searching for air travel. Each direction has its own characteristics. So how do you find cheap plane tickets to Montenegro?

How to get to Montenegro from Moscow. Direct flights

It is clear that the cheapest option is a direct flight from Moscow or St. Petersburg. However, during the season you may encounter the problem of unreasonably inflating prices by air carriers, so we will consider all acceptable options.

There are 2 international airports in Montenegro: in Podgorica and Tivat. From Moscow, regular flights of both Russian and foreign airlines fly daily, throughout the year. Closer to the season, flights from St. Petersburg are also added. As a rule, the price for them is slightly more expensive, so if St. Petersburg is preferable to you as a starting point, do not be lazy - check it out. There is also a possibility of detecting flights from other major cities in the country.

Balkan airlines, as a rule, reduce the price of tickets with a transfer in Belgrade (saving about 2-3 thousand from a round-trip ticket), while the transfer in most cases takes from 40 minutes to 2 hours, which is not very tiring.

True, in recent years, summer flights of domestic airlines have been cheaper, but just in case, we consider it necessary to indicate this option.

How to get to Montenegro from Belgrade (Serbia)

If you do not find adequate prices for the destinations described above, do not despair - these options are far from the only ones. Let's try to get to the treasured Montenegro from the neighboring country - Serbia. Flights to Belgrade are often cheaper than to Montenegrin airports.

There are three ways to get from Belgrade to Montenegro:

  • Bus. The road to Budva will take from 10 to 12 hours. There are about 10 buses per day, starting from 04.00 to 23.00. See the current schedule on the website www.balkanviator.com.

The most vivid impressions of our overland journey from Albania to Russia and back were the train ride from Belgrade to Podgorica.

The railway connection between Belgrade and the port city of Bar in Montenegro was opened in 1976. The route is 467 km long, of which 301 km the train travels through Serbia with incredible scenery of mountain and plain landscapes. On the way from Albania to Russia we traveled by night train, and on the way back in March we specially bought tickets for the day train to admire the spring nature.

From Belgrade the train departs at 9 am and arrives in Podgorica at 19.30. A whole day on the road doesn't bother us! The train has only 5 cars, of which 3 are passenger cars, 1 is a restaurant car and the driver's head car. The cost of our 2 tickets in a soft carriage one way was 34.5 euros. Additionally, you can pay about 6 euros for reserving seats. We weren't really able to sit in our seats during the trip, because... Almost all the way we were glued to the open windows, letting in the fresh air of fields, mountains and rivers and revealing the incredible beauty of Serbia before us...

From green meadows we found ourselves in snow-capped mountains...

The train continually dove into tunnels, of which there are more than 200 along the route with a total length of 114 km...

We climbed several hundred meters into the mountains (the maximum height is 1032 m in Montenegrin Kolasin, this is where the popular ski resort is located)...

And then they descended again onto the green plains...

There are 435 bridges on the way from Belgrade to Bar...The trip is breathtaking!

Photos, of course, will not convey half of the emotions and feelings that you can experience while traveling by train along the Serbia - Montenegro route. The Balkans never cease to amaze us with their sincerity, calmness and warmth of soul...

And this is the border station, in a couple of hours we will arrive in Podgorica, from where we will go to Albania.

Finally found the time to write about my trip to Serbia. I went to Zlatibor and Belgrade just for company with a friend and to take a break from work. Not chatting the same thing for three days on excursions like a robot - that’s great :))) I left from August 27 to 29, who is interested in my route - here you go link to Google Maps.

From early morning until late evening I worked - I had an excursion to Durmitor + rafting. Already in the evening in Zabljak I said goodbye to the tourists and went towards the neighboring country. At first it seemed that everything was going against us - it started to rain like a wall, my seat in the car began to heat up wildly, and they couldn’t figure out where to turn it off (then they tore the wires under the seat), my friend forgot some of the documents for the car at home... But we crossed the border at 3 seconds, the rain stopped and my spirits lifted! We arrived in Zlatibor at 12 at night, checked into a hotel, pointed our finger at the sky, and went looking for food. And then things got bad. It looked like a mountain resort, but at night money exchangers and restaurants were not open, only fast food outlets were happy to see us. They decorate them in a funny way - both in Serbia and Montenegro they pile vegetables into a funny design :))

In the morning at 8 o’clock we were already walking near Lake Zlatibor, it was here in the restaurant on April 4 that I celebrated my birthday. But then there was snow (). Zlatibor is also wonderful in the summer - fresh mountain air, lack of hellish heat, so Serbs come to this region en masse on weekends, just like in winter.

There is a FENIKS pastry shop on the side of the lake; I advise everyone to come here for pancakes. The serving size will amaze you. This morning I took a sweet pancake with berries and creamy sauce.

Drooling guaranteed! There is "Phoenix" on the other side of the lake. 1 euro = 120 Serbian dinars.

I look happy! HOORAY! I love changing my surroundings. It didn’t matter that I drove and drove again, but most of the way I was silent and mentally rested. Now I have lost my voice, due to overexertion, a lot of stories from morning to night, lack of sleep. Having worked in radio for 6 years, I didn’t have this. How to get my voice back? Probably, I’ll rest for a week in the forest and be silent, which is what I’m going to do in the second half of autumn.

Most of the Balkans look like this - red roofs and low-rise houses

In big cities, the ecology is spoiled, factories are working, it was hard for me to breathe in Serbia, I was already accustomed to Montenegrin cleanliness, the absence of dust and stench.

Pause for corn theft

I associate Serbia not with Kusturica, but with corn fields and tractors, there are tons of them there! I started with a photo like this, where I was on my birthday. By the way, the director himself is now filming a film on the highway from Trebinje to Mostar, I’ve seen it several times.

The tractor stood at a roadside cafe, where I ordered coffee and homemade sour milk, something like yogurt. I only started drinking Turkish coffee in the Balkans; I used to hate this drink. I'm screwed!

Montenegrins always read newspapers in cafes in the morning, it’s a ritual! The first page attracted the attention with the headline that Serbia is renting a training ground in Montenegro to test some tanks. I don’t really understand why in the Czech Republic... Are there not enough fields, forests and mountains in Serbia itself?

We visited Balgrad based on my tips using the app Maps.me

At the Zemun football stadium, I was at a meeting in a restaurant (not mine). A minute before, I had to change in the car from shorts and a T-shirt into a dress with beads and put on some makeup :))) If you are hungry in the Zemun area, I recommend the home cooking of the restaurant, really, really!

Then there were more meetings, and in the evening a walk around Belgrade and a little shopping at the Ushce shopping center

Behind me is a beautiful building, as I understand it, a city hospital

In the evening we had dinner at a cool restaurant Lorenzo & KaKalamBa. I have never seen a cooler establishment in Belgrade. Unfortunately, the iPhone battery died, I didn’t take a photo. But there is a terminator there, and sheep stuck upside down to the ceiling... The toilet is also creative. Here is their gallery on the website. AND address on Google Maps.

There is a map hanging there where visitors mark where they came from in Belgrade.

The next morning I went to the bookstore to buy a book by Emir Kusturica. First "Death is an unverified rumor" I found it for free on the Internet, but had to buy a second one. I decided to read it in the original language. My friend bought the second book, at first I chuckled at the banal description “How easy is it to get rich, drive a Ferrari, be with the most beautiful woman and not get involved in politics?” It turned out that the author of the book was an acquaintance of his, who writes spy novels with a bit of fiction and part of the truth, knowing the Balkans well and what kind of political games are going on here. I hope you are aware of the origin of the hero James Bond? .

In the afternoon I decided to go virtual with Oleg, who lives in the suburbs of Belgrade. I’ve been reading it for a long time and recommend it to you - olegdo . He also runs a useful community - drustvo_balkan

He was with his wife and took us to an ancient plane tree that is 180 years old. There is Miloshev Konak and a restaurant. The plane tree is supported by 17 metal pillars to which it is attached. Amazing sight! About Topchider Park, where this miracle tree grows.

What to do in Belgrade if you didn’t think about going there at all and didn’t plan anything? Go to the zoo, a year ago I was there with my daughter. sister. I wrote interesting facts.

Since Belgrade is a White City, white animals are brought here from all over the world.

I angered the family of white lions with my antics, I had to run away

There are also green fauna here

On the third day we left at 6 am and drove for a very long time, stopping many times for coffee and lunch :))) We also bought some glassware

Eh, why don’t I have my own home yet? I am sending a request into space!

On the way back we stopped again in Zlatibor. Here we met a Yugo machine, one of the worst in the world.

And the Pinzgauer all-terrain vehicle is the only vehicle in the Yugoslav army that ran on gasoline.

In Zlatibor there were pancakes again, this time I took them with chicken. You can overeat with this portion!

It’s beautiful here and the air is already clean

What a beautiful lake with a beach!

It's called Zlatar Lake

The first big city in Montenegro on the way is Pljevlja

It is considered the city with the worst ecology in the country. Montenegrins have not yet seen Russia :)) This is one of the largest industrial centers in Montenegro. He also lives off the drug trade. I heard that a couple of its residents fully sponsor everything in the city - large businesses, restaurants, discos, etc., give people jobs, and that’s why they live well. The houses are very nice there. As I was told, these drug dealers were sent to prison and the whole city wrote letters asking for their release. A decent portion of the population here is Muslim.

Info from Wikipedia:
100% of all Montenegrin coal is mined in Pljevlja; mining is carried out by JSC Rudnik Coal. Due to the proximity of energy resources, the only thermal power plant in Montenegro is located in the city. Thermal power plant "Pljevlja" annually produces up to 950 GW of electricity, which covers 25% of Montenegro's electricity needs. Tin and zinc mining is carried out in the municipality. Pljevlje is also the main center of the wood processing industry in Montenegro.

And then there was a sign - Durmitor National Park, and we paused for coffee at the Djurdjevic Bridge. My friend has never walked here, although he has passed it several times. And then we went to Zabljak, climbed to the Churevac panorama, ate a lot of bushes with blueberries and raspberries in the forest, had a delicious dinner at some pensioners’ club (the restaurant is tax-exempt).

And only at 22:00 I was at home in Budva. I was met by my mother, who had arrived in the morning, and a cat who had gone crazy from loneliness :)) I love sudden trips, without a plan, just for my own pleasure, when you can enjoy silence or music, Christmas trees outside the window or coffee at any roadside establishment. I will have my next such vacation for body and soul in October. I’m already dreaming, sleeping and seeing :)

One of the common routes to Montenegro lies through Serbia; its capital, Belgrade, is connected to most European cities by air and rail. You can get from Montenegro to Belgrade by bus or train.

Amazing landscapes of the mountainous regions of Montenegro

Trains leave from the city of Bar, one in the morning at 9:00, the second in the evening at 19:00. Tickets are inexpensive, their prices range from 20 to 30 euros. The train takes 12 hours to travel, so if you decide to travel, try to stock up on food for the trip.

When it comes to public transport for a trip to Belgrade, the morning train is the most interesting means of transportation. It allows you to take an amazing excursion through the mountains of Montenegro and Serbia, see beautiful rivers and picturesque canyons, high-mountain villages and ancient fortresses.

Lake Skadar appears as the train departing from Bar emerges from a long tunnel

The Moraca River Canyon is considered one of the most beautiful in Montenegro

Podgorica railway station

After the train leaves Podgorica, it begins to gradually gain altitude

The height of the supports of this bridge is 200 meters!!! It takes your breath away when the train passes through it

On one section of the route, the train climbs so high into the mountains that snow-capped peaks become visible

The mountains in the east of Montenegro are less rocky and seem to be covered with velvet

Kolasin – an alpine village in Montenegro

The border crossing between Montenegro and Serbia is the only thing that separates these countries

In Serbia, the color of the water in the rivers is no longer azure, but brown

Gradually the train descends from the mountains and beautiful Serbian cities begin to come across along the way.

There are various ways to get from Montenegro to Serbia. It's cheaper by train, of course. But there is one inconvenience - the trains are always late. So keep that in mind. But otherwise, traveling by train is a pleasure.

According to my feelings, we spent half of the journey in some tunnels. But the remaining half saw incredible landscapes outside the train window, similar to those presented in the photographs by the author of the article. Rocks 40 centimeters from the window, it seems, I could stick my hand out and touch :) Chasms, mountain rivers, gorges, there are a lot of running mountain goats everywhere, the sea and Lake Skadar.

As for the Bar-Belgrade-Bar train itself, it is very long. But very comfortable. Don't even compare it to a bus. But I would advise not to take the cheapest tickets. A coupe would be the best option. We arrived rested and incredibly happy. And if you are traveling from Bar to Belgrade and back, then it is better to buy tickets back to Serbia in its capital, since in Bar tickets are sold only at train stations, and there are a limited number of them there, which will not be very pleasant.

I traveled to Serbia from Montenegro both by train and by bus. And every time the trip delighted me. Canyons of incredible beauty and at the same time chilling mountain serpentines. But this will remain in memory for a lifetime. I would also like to take a backpack one day and walk along the canyon.

You are not the only one who has noticed the danger of Montenegro’s roads. In Europe, Montenegrin roads have long been considered one of the most difficult. They received this rating due to the large number of inconvenient serpentines, limited visibility and places from where you can easily slide into the abyss. Another unpleasant factor on the roads of Montenegro is frequent landslides. And sometimes even a small collapse of stones can play a fatal role in someone’s life.

They say that drivers in Montenegro are already accustomed to the incidents of local roads and drive there calmly. However, statistics show the opposite - there are a lot of accidents on mountain roads in Montenegro. Therefore, I support the idea of traveling from Montenegro to Serbia by train.

Here are some more negative facts about the roads of Montenegro:
    — many tunnels in Montenegro are not illuminated
    — in Montenegro there are tunnels with a lot of turns
    - the roads of Montenegro are often used for driving livestock
    - most mountain roads in Montenegro have one lane in each direction, and there are cases of a long line of cars due to one extremely slow driver
