See what "Tyra (island)" is in other dictionaries. Santorini island in greece Where is the city of Santorini

I have always dreamed of visiting Santorini, which is located in the southern part of the Aegean Sea. This magical island dates back to the 17th century BC. after a powerful volcanic eruption, and there are various legends and myths about it. Locals consider it a visiting card of Greece, some even call the island the "Greek Pearl", and historians and philosophers claim that Santorini is the very "Lost Atlantis", which still remains a mystery of history.

Undoubtedly, the island is very beautiful and mysterious; here, on the top of the underwater volcano crater, there are two of the most, in my opinion, fabulously beautiful cities in the world: Fira and. What caught my attention especially here is the picturesque view of the snow-white city of Fira, which opens from the sea. A very beautiful sight: the blue domes of family churches are illuminated by the rays of the sun, and houses and buildings in exclusively white and blue tones are randomly located on the slope of the cliff. The traditional transport on the island is the donkey. It was on it that the guide invited us to climb into the city.

This is not the best idea (the donkey will take a very long time), so I preferred to climb the 800 steps myself to see all the beauty.

Not so far from Fira, 11 km, is the most romantic place in Santorini - a city where lovers, newlyweds from different parts of the world come to and arrange an unforgettable honeymoon here.

Numerous snow-white small houses and windmills attracted my attention in the city.

How to get there

There are two ways to get to Santorini island: by air - by plane and by water - by ferry. Of course, the plane is much faster, but the ferry is much cheaper and more interesting, in my opinion. I took a ferry from Crete. I want to note that the trip was comfortable and fun. By the way, many people travel by ferry with cars.

By plane

Despite the fact that the area of the Greek island of Santorini is only 76 km², it has its own international airport - Santorini National Airport (Kratikos Aerolimenas Santorinis).

There are charter (direct) and regular flights (with a transfer through) from Moscow to Santorini island. Companies Aegean Airlines, Aeroflot, which mainly carry out these flights, often offer very favorable prices. The flight from Moscow to Athens takes about 3 hours, and then to the island itself no more than 40 minutes. There are also flights that last longer. I got to the island in the following way: I flew to Crete (city), and then took the high-speed ferry Flying Сat 4, and a few hours later I was already there and enjoyed the scenery.

You can compare ticket prices.

I will tell you about how to get to the island by ferry more conveniently in the "Ferry" section. As for the airport, it is located to the east of the island, not far from the Greek village of Kamari. The airport building is small in itself and therefore unbearably hot and crowded in summer. There are Duty Free, restaurants, ATM, café and information office.

To get from the airport to the cities of Oia and Fira, you can take a taxi or bus. It should be borne in mind that you need to order a taxi in advance, as you can be left without a car due to high competition.

Different airlines fly from St. Petersburg to Santorini. The most common of them are Aeroflot, British Airways, Lufthansa. The fastest flight from St. Petersburg to Fira takes approximately 4 hours 35 minutes. Flights are operated frequently, almost every day, but tickets must be purchased in advance.

By ferry

Ferries to the Greek island run every day from March 24 to October 10 from Athens, Crete and Rhodes. Among them are ordinary, high-speed ferries, high-speed catamarans and rocket ships. If you are in no hurry, regular ferries such as Prevelis are ideal because they are the cheapest. Prevelis is a big slow ferry, which you can use if you want to save some money, since the ticket price is from 16-25 EUR, but the journey will take 6 hours.

Below I will add information about the timetable and ticket prices.

High-speed ferries (catamarans), such as Flying Сat, are quite fast and comfortable.

In addition to the high-speed ferry Flying Сat 4, which runs every day between the Greek islands, there is also a MegaJet boat:

There are restaurants, slot machines, bars on the ferries - in general, everything to make a trip by the sea interesting and unforgettable. From Athens to Santorini the ferry departs from the port of Piraeus.

The cheapest ticket for one will be about 34 EUR. The Flying Сat 4 ferry from Athens to Santorini takes 4 hours. From Rhodes, the ticket price is 30 EUR. I got to the island from the port of Crete for only 18 EUR. It was announced to us that the trip was supposed to last about 2 hours, but, in all honesty, I can honestly say that I did not notice how time flew by. It was a lot of fun on board, there was live music in the bar and we even danced.

Visit ferriesingreece.com for up-to-date ferry timetables and ticket reservations. After choosing the desired date, time, port of departure and arrival, you can book your ticket online. You can buy it at the port itself. This is how it looks:

Since the port is located in the lower part of the city, we had to go up the serpentine for 20 minutes by bus. And at that moment, the views of the endless sea and the port that opened to me from the bus window amazed me with their beauty.

When is the season. When is the best time to go

The holiday season on the island starts in April and lasts until October. But the best time is the velvet season, because the sun is no longer so “scorching”, the sea is still warm, the beaches are free, since the number of tourists is decreasing.

Based on my personal experience, I can say that in the summer (I was here in July) the island is extremely hot and, despite all the beauty, it is physically difficult to be in the sun for a long time, which quietly "roasts" you, and not at all before the walks. Therefore, I think that the end of September - the beginning of October will be the ideal time to travel to Santorini. However, it should be noted that by mid-October the weather on the island changes dramatically: it becomes windy and rains begin.

Although it all depends on the purpose for which you are arriving on this island: newlyweds who arrange a wedding in this romantic corner come at any time of the year. Bad weather does not stop creative personalities - writers, photographers, artists who love to create and think. But still, for ordinary tourists it is not recommended to go here from mid-November to March due to strong winds and humidity, and, in addition, ferries change their schedule and run much less frequently during this period.

A few words about religious holidays and festivals: Agios Ionnis is celebrated in July with an abundance of wine drinks, delicious food and music, the day of the Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary is celebrated in mid-August. The jazz and wine festivals, which are held at the end of summer, arouse considerable interest among tourists, but I will talk about this in more detail in the "Holidays" section.

As for the difference in prices in season and off-season, then, of course, ticket prices in the off-season are much cheaper than during the season. Moreover, there will be no overpayments for hotels, which are very expensive in summer. Thus, in the off-season, you can enjoy the fabulous beauty of the island without crowds of people and at low prices.

Santorini in summer

Summer in Santorini is very hot, the average daytime temperature in July is up to + 28C in the shade, but it can rise above + 40C. There is practically no rain in summer, and sea water at this time heats up to + 25C.

Walking in the sights in the heat is a risky business: you must take precautions, otherwise you can get a powerful heatstroke. Despite serious problems with fresh water on the island, a variety of vegetables and fruits (grapes, snow-white large eggplants, fava beans, miniature sweet tomatoes) grow beautifully here, which I definitely recommend trying.

In summer, there are a lot of tourists: despite the heat, everyone wants to have time to spend their vacation at this time of the year. Therefore, it is better to plan your trip in advance and book tickets and hotels.

Santorini in autumn

As I said above, autumn is the most wonderful time to relax in this paradise.

It is not as hot as in summer, but it is still warm: the average air temperature in October reaches +22 C during the day, and the water temperature is +23 C, which allows you to spend a lot of time on the beach and in the sea. Many tourists go home, and long walks in the most beautiful places are more comfortable than in summer. Also at this time, weddings are increasingly held.

However, by mid-October, nature reminds of the approaching winter: it rains more and more often, the air becomes cooler: +16 C.

Santorini in spring

Spring in Santorini begins in March, the air temperature in the daytime is + 16C, and there may still be cold rains, but, despite this, nature on the island begins to wake up, and the locals are preparing to welcome foreign guests. In April, the air temperature is already + 19C, and the water temperature in the Aegean Sea is +17. March and April are great for spring walks and sightseeing, but you need to be prepared for the rains and cool temperatures, so it's best to bring warm clothes. But what marvelous landscapes open to the human eye, the island is truly beautiful at any time of the year:

But the weather in May is already starting to please: it becomes warm and sunny, the average air temperature reaches + 22C, and there is almost no rain, and every day it is getting warmer and warmer. Obviously, therefore, in May, the flow of tourists increases, who want not only to wander around the island, but also to plunge into the Aegean Sea.

Although the average sea water temperature in May reaches + 22C, the weather is still quite cool. You should not come with children at this time, but at the end of May you can safely open the swimming season and sunbathe. Towards the beginning of June, the average temperature rises to + 26 C.

Santorini in winter

In winter, Santorini resembles a ghost island with empty streets, and this is not even due to cloudy weather, but the lack of ferries, which run less and less at this time of the year. Some resorts are completely closed, with locals heading to the continent before the next tourist season.

From December to January, the weather is cloudy, but without much rainfall. The average daytime air temperature in December is +16 C, and in January and February - +14 C. Despite the fact that winter on the island is unpredictable, there is no snow, and if it rains, it does not last long. Most likely, this time of the year is suitable for those who like to be alone and contemplate alone with the sea. But still, in my opinion, this is not the best time to relax on the island, because to get here, you will have to spend a considerable amount of money on a flight. A little patience - and spring will please again with sunny warmth and bright colors.

What are the prices for rest

Holidays in Santorini are not cheap. In this section I will try to tell you more about the prices for hotels, car rental, bus, food and excursions, as well as how you can save money.

 • Accommodation prices on the island are more dependent on the season and the stars of the hotel. So, for example, a week-long tour with accommodation in a 2-bed room in a 3-star hotel in the high season will cost about 290 EUR, in a 4-star hotel it is already more expensive - 540 EUR, and in a suite - 870 EUR. However, if you go alone and stay in an apartment, you will save a lot, as a double room will cost about 170 EUR per week. And another cheap option is to purchase a tourist ticket in winter, autumn or early spring, i.e. out of season. During this period of time, a room in a 3-star hotel will cost about 130 EUR, in a 4-star hotel - 290 EUR, and in a 5-star hotel from 590 EUR.
 • Food prices are European. So, a lunch for two will cost about 30 -40 EUR, depending on the type of restaurant. And dinner will be more expensive: from 40 to 50 EUR. And the cost of a cappuccino in a cafe will be 2.7 EUR, black coffee - 2 EUR.
 • The price of a bus ticket, depending on the route, will be about 1.6-2.3 EUR. Renting a premium class car will cost about 170 EUR per day, an average car - 89 EUR, an economy class car - 50 EUR per day, keep in mind that the cost of a liter of gasoline will be about 1.8 EUR. For more details about renting a car, I will tell you in the "Rent a car" section.
 • Since there are a lot of excursion tours on the island, the prices for them are different. They mainly depend on the type of transport used, the availability of a Russian-speaking guide, the area, etc. A sightseeing tour of the main sights of the capital will cost about 40-55 EUR.

Major attractions. What to see

Santorini has a lot of interesting sights, there is definitely something to see and admire. I would like to highlight those that, in my opinion, must be visited, I will tell you more about them below. But first, what to see in 1 day.

Honestly, a place like Santorini needs more time. But what to see on the island if you only have one day? I will try to suggest such a route to cover the most interesting sights and places.

 • To begin with, you should definitely take a walk through the streets of the picturesque town of Fira, taking memorable pictures.

 • Here you can also try the winding steps down to the old port and dine at the tavern overlooking the sea. There are also souvenir shops here. All of this can take you about 3-4 hours, although it depends on how long you will be photographed. If you want to go upstairs back, you can use the services of a donkey for 5 EUR.
 • Then we go to the romantic Oyu with its magical atmosphere, especially since it is located near Fira (11 km). This is a very beautiful place and you will undoubtedly want to do an amazing photo shoot here too. 2-3 hours will be enough for you.

 • And finally, I advise you to end your one-day tour of Santorini by visiting the Black Beach or Perissa Beach. Because, in my opinion, you cannot leave the island without plunging into the warm and healing sea here. By the way, it really has useful and healing properties that rejuvenate and heal the skin. And what a wonderful beach with black as coal, hot sand! It's worth seeing and feeling! There are also many restaurants, cafes, taverns along the seashore. So you will definitely not stay hungry.

Top 5

Sunset on Santorini

One of the main attractions of the island is its famous sunset, which is so beautiful that it will leave an indelible impression on your memory for a lifetime.

I watched the sunset from the site of the village of Oia. Do not be discouraged if you do not have the opportunity to get to it: beautiful views open from the city of Fira and the village of Imerovigli, and it is much easier to get to them.

Fira and Oia

The capital of the island - Fira - and I advise you to visit the romantic Oia immediately after arriving on the island. On the central streets of Fira, there are a lot of shops, souvenir shops, restaurants, cafes for every taste, however, in the high season, there are no crowds of people here.

Traditional Greek architecture, windmills, a long staircase, the Venetian fortress at Oia, as well as impressive landscapes allow for captivating photographs.

Venetian fortress in Oia

The Venetian fortress in the city of Oia, which used to protect the island from pirate raids, is located on the edge of a cliff and is a monument of medieval architecture.

Today, its function is somewhat different - a cultural and historical landmark and a wonderful observation deck.

Windmills in Oia village

To see the most photographed attraction of Santorini, the windmills, you need to get to the village of Oia. Also, I advise you to capture this scenic view at sunset, you will not regret it!

Ancient Tyra

And now a little history. In the 9th century BC, Spartan colonists founded an ancient city on Mount Mesa Vuno.

The ruins of Ancient Tyra were discovered only at the end of the 19th century: the remains of houses, tombs, churches, etc. You can get here by taxi or tourist bus. The ruins can be visited all days from 8:30 am to 2:30 pm, except Monday. But, in my opinion, it is best to plan a visit to the excavations in the morning or in the evening: there are fewer people, and the sun does not bake so well. Entrance to the ruins costs 2 EUR. You can buy a tour for 10 EUR, which includes a transfer from Kamari to the top of Mount Mesa Vuno and back, only the entrance ticket is paid separately. I also want to note that on the territory of Ancient Tyra there are no cafes or restaurants, there is only a vending machine with drinks, so take something to eat with you.

Pharos lighthouse

The snow-white Pharos lighthouse was built in the south of Santorini in 1892 and is now one of the most remarkable lighthouses in the Aegean Sea. It is interesting that for a long time kerosene was used for its work, and already in 1893 - electric energy. The lighthouse is currently operating in automatic mode.

Since the sunsets are incredibly beautiful here, I advise you to come here with a camera, and on the way, hungry, you can visit Greek taverns and taste national cuisine.

Beaches. Which is better

Santorini is famous not only for its sunsets, but also for its colorful beaches: black, white and red. Below is a map showing the following beaches:

 • kamari beach;
 • perissa beach;
 • Red Beach;
 • White beach.

Kamari beach

The largest and most popular black beach on the island is located along the coast of Kamari village. The village itself does not stand out in anything special: bars, nightclubs, hotels, the promenade. During the day you can swim, do water sports, sunbathe, and at night - have fun and dance in discos.

Exotic black sand is the result of a volcanic eruption. They say it has magical properties: it rejuvenates the body, heals skin diseases. Also, what surprised me the most was the fact that in some places you can enter the water along a volcanic plate! Just imagine: not on sand or stones, but on the frozen lava of a volcano! You can get here in 15 minutes by bus from the capital.

Perissa beach

Another black sand beach is Perissa Beach. There are not many tourists here, probably because there are much fewer clubs, bars and restaurants.

But at the same time, the tourist infrastructure is well developed: you can order food and drinks right on the beach, and in the evening incendiary dances and entertainment are held. In addition, there is a water taxi to travel between the two beaches, and a diving center is available for those wishing to dive.

Red beach

The island's red beach is located near the village of Akrotiri. Since it is very picturesque and beautiful, this place is never deserted, almost the entire coast is always lined with sun loungers and umbrellas.

A large dark red rock hangs over the beach. There are red and black pebbles on the shore and in the water. You can get here by bus from Fira to Akrotiri in 30 minutes, and then gently descend down to the foot of the cliff.

White beach

Not far from Red Beach is the only White Beach in Santorini. A very quiet and secluded place, especially suitable for lovers of romance.

You can come here by boat directly from Red Beach. And somewhere here, by the way, is the Pharos lighthouse, which I mentioned above.

Churches and temples. Which are worth visiting

Ayiu Mina Church

At the top of the cliff in the town of Oia is a white church with a blue roof. Ayiu Mina Church is the symbol of the island.

I recommend visiting this scenic spot to admire the folk architecture and the sunset from one of the terraces. You can go inside, as the church is open to people. It is best to attend church before or after the service. Although it is possible to enter during the service, but carefully, without breaking the rules of conduct. The service schedule changes, but approximately the morning service lasts from 8.30 to 11.00, and the evening service from 19.00 to 21.00.

Church of Panagia Episcopi

The church of Panagia Episkopi, which is located near the village of Exo Gonya, contains ancient shrines. She survived various disasters, so the locals believe that the Virgin Mary is guarding her.

This is one of the few churches on the island that is covered with tiles. I recommend visiting this magical place for a sense of serenity. Opening hours: round the clock, the cost of the visit is free.

Prophet Elijah monastery

The monastery of the Prophet Elijah rises on the highest point of the island. It houses valuable handwritten books and Byzantine icons. It was founded in 1711.

Now there is a museum here, but during the reign of the Turks there was a center against the Ottoman rule, which is why this monastery becomes even more important for local residents. However, you can visit it only with a guided tour, because a NATO base is located next to it.

Fira Cathedral

Fira has a cathedral of incredible beauty. It was built in 1827.

After the earthquake in 1956, it was practically destroyed, but later it was restored. The temple is striking in its elegant beauty. The bell tower, mosaics, arches outside create a unique image. The frescoes decorating the interior from the inside were created by a local artist - Christoforos Assimis. Approximate opening hours: morning 9.00 - 12.30, afternoon: 17.00 - 17.30 and evening: 19.30 - 21.00, the schedule also changes depending on the services.

Catholic Cathedral

The architecture of this cathedral, built in 1823, sets it apart from others. Even from afar, you begin to notice the peach color of its walls, completely atypical for this area.

The baroque tower with gratings, balustrade and graceful decoration especially attracted my attention.

The interior of the cathedral is decorated with paintings, inside the dome is covered with a blue-lilac color, and the walls are painted in creamy and orange shades.

Mass is held here every day in Greek at 8.00. On Saturdays, services usually start at 19.00, on Sundays at 10.00. At this time, the cathedral is also open to the public, as at any other time.

Museums. Which are worth visiting

Museum of Prehistoric Fira

The Museum of Prehistoric Fira, which is located in the capital at the intersection of Mitropoleos and Dekigala Streets, will introduce you to bronze items, tools, statuettes, and other interesting exhibits and artifacts, many of which were found during the excavations of Akrotiri.

The golden ibex, made of gold, is the most famous exhibit of this museum.

Some practical information: the museum is open daily from 8:30 am to 3:00 pm, except Monday. Ticket price: 4-8 EUR.

Fira Archaeological Museum

I also recommend visiting the popular archaeological museum on the island, founded in 1902. Here you can find artifacts from different periods: prehistoric, Roman and even Byzantine. The museum itself is small, but its collection is of great interest to connoisseurs of antiquity: inscriptions, figurines, frescoes, clay figurines, vessels, vases, etc.

Museum opening hours: daily from 8:30 to 15:00, except Monday. Ticket price: - 2 EUR, while you can save money and visit the museum of prehistoric Fira with the same ticket.

Wine Museum

In the Votonas area, next to a private winery, there is a wine museum. I advise you to visit it if you are interested in the history of winemaking on the island, the stages of wine production, the ancient equipment that was used to create it.

The museum itself is located in a cave at a depth of six meters. I want to note that it is not necessary to be attached to the guide, as an audio guide is distributed here, which also speaks Russian. The fascinating excursion ends with a tasting, and, of course, you will be offered to buy wine here.

But I do not recommend doing this, as it is more expensive in the shop at the museum than in ordinary stores. Museum working hours: daily from 8:00 to 19:00, ticket price for visiting the museum - 7 EUR.

Maritime museum

If you are interested in the maritime theme, then I recommend visiting a very interesting museum in the city, where you can get acquainted with the maritime history of both Greece and the island. It is located at the following address:

Its exposition is very interesting and varied.

On the ground floor, there are various machine tools, tools for building ships, navigational instruments, marine equipment, tackle, compasses, tools, photographs of ship crews.

On the second floor of the museum, you can see the binnacle and the ship's bell.

And also ship models: both old and modern.

There is also a library with ship's logs, important historical documents and nautical charts.

But it's hard to understand anything without the guide's explanations. Opening hours: all days except Thursday from 10: 00-14: 00 & 17:00 -20: 00.

Nearby islands

Volcanic islands of Nea Kameni and Palea Kameni

If you have already arrived in Santorini, then be sure to make an unforgettable trip to two small islands that appeared as a result of a volcanic eruption in different eras. These islands are marked in red on the map below:

Boat excursions are organized here daily.

Hot springs and the Church of St. Nicholas are what people come to Palea Kameni for. And on Nea Kameni, I recommend climbing to the crater of an active volcano, if you are certainly not one of the "timid".

From the port of Thira, sail here for about 10 minutes, the excursion lasts about 3-4 hours and it should be noted that there is no food or water here, so I advise you to bring drinks and something to eat, and of course, bathing accessories. The cost of such a tour will cost you about 52 EUR. It is difficult to get to these islands on your own, so I recommend buying an organized excursion.

Food. What to try

In Santorini, trying national Greek dishes was one of the main and most enjoyable entertainment for me. I would also like to add that only on this island white eggplants, giant capers and miniature tomatoes grow.

Moussaka

The first thing I recommend to try is the casserole of tomatoes, eggplant, minced meat, potatoes and béchamel sauce. They call her a moussaka. I really liked this dish, a little fatty, but very satisfying and so tasty that you just lick your fingers!

Moussaka usually costs between 10 and 13 EUR depending on the restaurant, but the portions are very large.

Greek salad

Any restaurant or cafe will definitely offer you it as a snack. The portions of salad are so large that you can take one for two, usually it costs from 7-8 EUR, maybe more, depending on the level of the establishment.

In Greek salad, almost everywhere, as a seasoning, they add sour-salty capers, which add a piquant taste. They can also be used as a snack.

Greek cuisine has similarities with Turkish. I was especially captivated by dolma (Dolmades), which is made from grape leaves stuffed with lamb and rice. It smells of various spices and spices, this dish is served hot, be sure to try it! It costs about 11 EUR.

Tsadziki sauce

It is simply a must, you will not be able to taste this sauce anywhere else, only in Santorini. It is prepared from yoghurt, garlic and grated cucumbers. Tasty and unusual, I tried to cook it at home not the same taste.

Stifado

For meat lovers, I advise you to try beef stewed in wine with herbs and onions. It looks very appetizing.

Tomato balls

And for those who consider themselves vegetarians, I recommend trying cutlets made from tomatoes, bell peppers, onions, mint and other herbs. Unique taste.

Fish dishes are not cheap here, although the sea is nearby, but very juicy and tasty. You will definitely be offered to try the fish rofos, which is an inhabitant of the shores of Santorini. This pleasure will cost you 12 -15 EUR. I didn't like the octopuses, the taste seemed somehow strange. As for the snacks, there are a great variety of them here: mussels in different sauces and even wine, delicious feta, local olives, calamari, shrimps. The cost of a plate with snacks will be around 7-9 EUR, but again depending on the place.

I didn’t like the wines here, and the prices for them, as it seemed to me, were too high. In local shops, wines cost from 10 EUR and more. Although it is still worth trying the most delicious - sweet red wine Vinsanto.

On the main street in Oia there is a patisserie with lots of cakes and other assorted sweets. If you take with you, then it will cost you less.

 • Restaurant "La Maison". I would recommend this romantic place located in the village of Imerovigli. I have tried moussaka in many places, but here it is absolutely amazing, and the views of the caldera and the Aegean Sea are amazing. Be sure to try the fig and cheese salad and chocolate desserts here. Only tables need to be booked in advance, as this place is popular with locals as well. A full dinner will cost you about 30-40 EUR here.

 • Naoussa Tavern restaurant in Fira. I really enjoyed the service here. The staff are very friendly and welcoming, the food is of high quality and the prices are quite reasonable. I advise you to try baklava and Greek yogurt with honey and nuts for dessert. Average bill per person from 20-50 EUR, depending on what you order. For a sum of 20 to 25 EUR you can enjoy a dessert, light salad and a cup of coffee. Hot, salad, dessert, coffee, wine will cost more and, accordingly, prices will be higher.
 • Tavern - Taverna Giorgaros. It is located in Akrotiri, not far from Red Beach. Delicious food, inexpensive prices and a colorful atmosphere, and some of the staff even spoke Russian.

In some cafes on the island, prices are more or less democratic: you can drink freshly squeezed juice, a cup of coffee, enjoy ice cream, and also enjoy the mesmerizing views from the terrace. However, you will have to pay more for a rest in a cafe by the pools.

Holidays

Every year, the island hosts a variety of celebrations, holidays, festivals, contests and festivities, many of which are associated with religion and ancient traditions:

 • Santorini Jazz Festival. If you happen to be on the island in July, then I recommend visiting a very bright and beautiful jazz festival. Famous musicians and jazz groups come here every year.

 • "Volcanoes" holiday with fireworks, dances and competitions. It is celebrated in August: people have fun, dance, sing, show interesting performances, depicting a volcanic eruption. This holiday is very important for them, because, despite the fact that the island died many times from hot lava, life was revived again and again.
 • Day of the Assumption of the Virgin. It is considered the most important religious holiday of the island and is celebrated with great fun on 15 August. Mass festivities are held in the streets, a festive service is held for parishioners, all this is accompanied by congratulations and treats.
 • Well, if you love traditional entertainment, be sure to take part in the Ifaisteia Festival of Culture on August 15th. during which you can taste a variety of traditional Greek dishes.
 • And in early September, musicians and singers from all over the world come to the island and an international festival begins, which surprises, pleases and amuses people. Fira hosts concerts of classical and modern music.

 • Parkour Festival for the Art of Movement. It is held in early October. I, unfortunately, did not find him. Previously, the festival was held in different countries of the world, but later Santorini became the main venue due to its unusual architecture. There are many different obstacles on the island, such as the roofs of Greek houses, stairs, railings, walls. At this festival, against the backdrop of the fabulous landscapes of the island, the tracers amaze with their ability to skillfully navigate the narrow streets.

 • Wine Festival "The Cities of the Sea". Usually held at the end of summer, a great time for tasting Greek wines. And by the way, white grapes are mainly grown on the island, the most popular wines: Nichteria and Vinsanto, which are not exported.

Safety. What to watch out for

Below on the map are the areas where tourists most often stop in Santorini:

Highlighted in orange on the map:

 • 1 - Fira;
 • 2 - the village of Imerovigli;
 • 3 - the village of Firostefani;
 • 4 - Perissa:
 • 5 - Kamari;
 • 6 - Akrotiri.

Fira town

At an altitude of 260 m above the sea, on the slope of a cliff, lies the island's capital, its pearl is Fira. The most beautiful sunsets and sunrises, stunning views of the sea, landscapes, various attractions: museums, churches, galleries, temples, etc. will not leave indifferent any tourist. However, life here does not stop even at night, so if you prefer a quiet and relaxing holiday, it is better to consider other options, because Fira is a very busy city. Since here is the very center and most of the attractions are located here, hotels here are expensive, there is practically no budget accommodation, so I personally have never chosen this area for living.

It is worth staying here only if your tourist goals include not only a beach holiday, but also night entertainment: discos, bars. This is enough here. And, of course, you can enjoy a visit to various museums and galleries in the afternoon.

Imerovigli

Another cozy resort called Imerovigli is located 2 km from the capital of the island at the very edge of the cliff, and it attracts mainly tourists who like secluded relaxation. This village of 470 is notable for its typical Greek-style churches. In addition, here you can see the ruins of the ancient Skaros castle, which was destroyed by an earthquake. I also recommend staying here for those who love not only the remnants of the past in the form of ancient ruins, but also for connoisseurs of discos and numerous nightclubs, which are no less than in Fira. And one more indisputable advantage of this place is a considerable choice of housing at affordable prices.

Firostefani

To the north of Fira is the small village of Firostefani. As I have noticed, it is not as crowded and noisy here as in the capital itself, therefore, in my opinion, this is an ideal place for a family vacation. Firostefani is of interest to those who like to eat tasty food and walk along narrow streets. You will not find any special attractions here, only traditional blue and white houses. Delightful sunsets can also be seen from anywhere in the village. Firostefani is most suitable for lovers of picturesque landscapes and a calm, quiet rest. And due to the remoteness from the capital, hotels here are the most optimal in terms of prices, while it is convenient to get to the city center and other interesting places.

Perissa and Kamari

They are located quite far from Fira and are most popular with beach lovers looking to save on hotel costs. The map of Perissa looks like this: But the Kamari map: There is no place to walk here, but the prices for housing and food are inexpensive. However, it is still not safe to settle here, because the airport is located nearby and it becomes scary when you see how low planes fly. Yes, it's also noisy. And, of course, far from the center.

Among the attractions of Kamari are the Panagia Myrtidiotissa Monastery. Perissa, in turn, beckons with its ruins of the 5th century A.D. e. I also advise you to visit the large church of Timiu Stavru.

Perissa, like Kamari, is famous for its black volcanic sand. Bars, cafes, taverns, restaurants - all this is on the beach. In addition, you can go diving and water skiing. Thus, these cities are mainly worth going for a beach holiday. Still, I would not recommend these areas for travelers to stay, despite the cheapest hotel prices.

Akrotiri

As I mentioned above, archaeologists believe that Santorini is the legendary Atlantis that went under water. And, of course, they believe so not without reason, since in 1967, during excavations near Akrotiri, entire cities were discovered with furniture, dishes, painting of the Minoan civilization.

So whether this is a myth or reality, we can only guess. This is how the map of Akrotiri looks like: As for the prices of hotels, here they are much cheaper, given the distance from the center. But I do not advise you to choose this area for living, it is still far from the capital. It is better to come here separately, especially since it is worth visiting the archaeological reserve and touching the ancient world.

Another attraction of Akrotiri is the famous Red Beach. As a result of the fracture of the cliff, a coast of red sand was formed, which, in combination with the blue sea, forms a very beautiful landscape. For vacationers, there are sun loungers, umbrellas, in the nearest hotels you can buy drinks and food. The marine flora and fauna of these places are especially attractive to divers. Therefore, it is worth going to Akrotiri for various reasons: for the sake of excavations of the Minoan civilization, diving and beach recreation. And all this for a relatively inexpensive price!

How to get around the island

There are several transportation options on the island. When you are traveling with a group of tourists, the transfer problem will be solved, however, this option is more expensive and you will not be able to deviate from the planned route and will be tied to the guide. When traveling alone, there is already a need for transport to move around the island. I would like to note that there is no metro or railway here. There are only such options as buses, taxis, car or motorcycle rental. Inside the city, you can move on foot or on a donkey. But renting a bike in Santorini is not a good idea, although it is quite feasible. However, it is difficult to imagine how to ride it on steep terrain and serpentine roads.

Taxi. What features exist

Taxis are also available on the island. You can order a taxi. Getting from Oia to Fira will cost about 20 EUR, from the port to the city of Oia it will cost about 30 EUR, and from Fira to the port - 18 EUR. And here it is also considered a good form to leave a tip 10% of the trip cost. An expensive pleasure, but quickly and comfortably, but you can't go to Kamari beach from Oia every day.

There are times when drivers do not turn on the meter and then you need to agree on the cost of the trip, but this must be done in advance. There is no competition among taxi drivers, the cars are decent: quite comfortable Mercedes and Toyota cars, usually yellow with a TAXI checkerboard. You can call a taxi 100 meters from the ferry or the city center at a taxi station, or call the hotel staff. I want to mention one more feature, so that it does not seem to you unceremonious: for local residents, the taxi service is absolutely free. Once, when I was driving from the port to Iyu, the driver asked me if I would mind if he dropped two more acquaintances along the way, naturally, for free.

Public transport

Regular buses run around the island and connect Fira with many beaches and villages. The ticket costs from EUR 1.6 to EUR 2.3.

There is a bus schedule and ticket prices. They run once every half hour and stop at intermediate points. Standing travel is prohibited and if all seats are occupied, it will pass you by and you will have to wait more than 30 minutes.

Transport rent

Car rent

You can rent a car, or any other transport in Santorini (scooter, ATV, motorcycle) at any corner, as the rental service is very well developed here. Usually, the cost of renting a car with insurance per day will cost you 50 EUR, also take into account the cost of gasoline: 70 -80 EUR per tank. Renting a scooter will be a little cheaper: 30 - 40 EUR per day and 30 - for gasoline. You can choose and rent a car in advance. If you want to save money on car rental, then look for a rental company farther from the hotel, where prices are much cheaper. To draw up a rental agreement, the following documents are required: a passport with a visa, an international license with a driving experience of at least 1 year, about 200 EUR. Read the agreement carefully (in this case, you will need knowledge of English), and also make sure that the landlord does not add anything on your copy of the agreement after signing. Parking problems are mostly only in the center. Paid parking will cost about 1.5 EUR per hour; you can park for free in those places where there are permits. But just be careful: the tow trucks work very well here and will instantly take your car to the impound.

Motorcycle rental

It is very popular among tourists to travel by moped or motorbike, as this type of transport is very convenient in the summer: it is easy to park and move throughout the island, and it is also quite economical. But there are certain nuances: for drivers not from the European Union, it is necessary to have an international driving license of category A for a moped or motorcycle or scooter, and also when driving, you need to wear helmets. As for the roads, in cities they are two-lane, and in villages they are narrow. I recommend using the free parking lots, which are abundant in Fira and other towns and villages on the island. Not only in Santorini, but throughout Greece, traffic on the roads is right-hand.

Hotels - don't forget to check prices from booking sites! Don't overpay. It !

Rent a Car - also aggregation of prices from all distributors, all in one place, let's go!

When the ferry maneuvers inside the huge caldera of Santorini (also called Santorini, Thira or Fira), the land around it seems to rise and fall again. The steep cliffs rise hundreds of meters, and nothing grows on them, so the dominant colors of this gloomy landscape are red, black and gray, with various gradations of shades. Santorini itself is not one island, but several, and Thira is only the largest piece of land in this mini-archipelago, and it is on it that almost all the current villages are located, except the smallest ones. The landscape bears witness to a story so dramatic and turbulent that what actually happened seems like a legend.

Starting from 3000 BC, the island successfully developed as a thriving outpost of the Minoan civilization, but approximately between 1647 and 1628 BC (according to the latest estimates) a tragedy occurred: the volcano island exploded, its middle part plunged into the sea, leaving behind a huge crater (caldera) with a diameter of 10 kilometers, and a terrible earthquake hit the coast of the Aegean Sea. The death of Tyra dealt an irreparable blow to the Minoan civilization centered on. Many now associate with the death of Tyra Plato's story about Atlantis - "The Blessed Isles Submerged in the Sea."

Plato insisted on the truth of the legend, and Solon attributed the catastrophe 9 thousand years ago from the time in which he lived. If you remove the last zero from Solon's figure, you get a date that looks like the truth. These apocalyptic events, however, do not really excite today's tourists who come here for the sake of incredible landscapes, and also to lie on the dark volcanic sand of the local beaches and feel the strange spirit, which, according to rumor, is inherent in these places due to their special geographical position: and today, as well as a century ago, it is believed that the island was chosen by vampires.

The tourism industry has changed life here, customs have become a thing of the past, and rather ruinous pleasures have appeared instead, and the good thing about this is that Santorini is one of those islands where tourists are treated in the best possible way. But there is another local industry where the islanders earn much longer, even if it is not noticed by visitors: winemaking. Santorini is one of the most important wine producers in the country, and young dry white wines (mostly from the Assyrtico grapes for which the island is famous) are excellently combined with seafood, as you can see by visiting cafes and taverns clinging to the rocks captured on many postcards.

Arrival to Santorini island

Ferries dock in the gloomy port of Ormos Atinos, while Skala Firas and Oia to the north only accept local ferries, sightseeing boats and cruise ships. Buses, surprisingly packed, connect Athinos to the island's capital Fira, and there are less frequent connections to Oia and the main beaches of Kamari and Perissa. In order not to waste time waiting, and energy - on a tiring journey, go ashore quickly and get on any bus that comes up. In Athinos, you will be pestered with offers of accommodation anywhere on the island. In the summer, when places are snapped up, it may be wise to agree, especially if they promise to settle in Fira.

True, there were rumors about fraud: the businessman promised, say, Fira, but brought him out of nowhere, so be on the lookout, and if it suddenly seems that something is wrong, it is better to turn to another person. Firas Rock is connected to Fira by 580 steps (it takes about 45 minutes to climb) - not such a tiring walk if you don't mind carrying your luggage, but you can hire a mule (3.50 €, you can get a significant discount in low season) or take a ride in a cable car (only in the summer 6: 40-22: 00 every 20 minutes) - you will probably want to repeat this walk through the air more than once. The airport is near Monolithos, on the eastern edge of the island. The bus runs regularly - to the Fira bus station, until 22:00.

The capital of Santorini is Fira

Partially rebuilt after the devastating earthquake of 1956, Fira (or Tira or Hora) still clings courageously to the edge of the immense caldera. The sunrises and sunsets here are extraordinarily beautiful: the white Cycladic houses scattered along the mountainside are colored by the rays of the morning or evening sun, so there is something to admire.

 • Arrival, information and accommodation in Fira

Buses leave Fira from the station south of Plathia Teotokopoulou and continue to the stops of Perissa, Perivolos, Kamari, Monolithos, Akrotiri, Ormos Atinhos and the airport. Taxis leave from a stop near the bus station, by the stairs leading from the main board. Rent a motorcycle if you intend to explore the island in a couple of days, but be careful: local drivers seem to like to compete with tourists, especially on difficult and dangerous roads. Go to Moto Chris at the start of the road to Santorini Camping, while Ancient Thira Tours on Fira's main street rents mountain bikes and ATVs. In Fira, opposite the office of the state travel agency, there is a branch "Nomikos Travel", and the friendly staff of this agency, together with "Kamari Tours", organize trips and excursions to ancient Thira and the islet of Tarassia.

The State Tourist Office (daily 9: 00-24: 00 in summer) on the main street by the bus station is also helpful. There are several Internet cafes, located near the main square, and small laundries are scattered throughout the city and the surrounding area, the best is “We do Laundry”, above the road to the camping. The island is far from cheap, and accommodation in Fira with caldera views is sometimes very expensive. It's not so expensive to stay outside the city: in Firostefani, between Fira and Imerovigli, rooms are a little cheaper, and the views are not worse, but these places are becoming fashionable, and the further, the more difficult it becomes to get a discount.

Another pleasant place, where you do not mind spending that kind of money for essentially one view, is the village of Karteraos, about 20 minutes walk from Fira to the southeast. At the time of this writing, the official youth hostel has been closed for renovations (contact the hostel in Oia for inquiries). There is only one non-efficient option - Santorini Camping, which is the closest to the city compared to the others (the best camping on the island is near the village of Akrotiri). Given the demand for this volcanic archipelago, it is worthwhile to call in advance or at least call before arrival.

 • Attractions of Fira

In addition to splendid views, Fira is rich in excellent museums. In the collection of the Archaeological Museum (Tuesday-Sunday 8: 30-19: 30; 3 € - including a visit to the museum of prehistoric Tyra), near the stop of the funicular north of the city, there is a funny collection of Dionysian erotic figurines. On the other side of the city, between the cathedral and the bus station at the new Museum of Prehistoric Thira (Tuesday-Sunday 8: 00-17: 00; € 3 - including a visit to the archaeological museum), fossilized fossils, Cycladic art and amazing finds from Akrotiri are curious.

Megaro Gizi Museum (Monday-Saturday 10: 30-13: 30 and 17: 00-20: 00, Sunday 10: 30-16: 30; 3 €), above the archaeological museum, in a beautiful old mansion that belonged to the Catholic diocese (diocese ) Santorini, refurbished and converted into a cultural center with a good exhibition of old prints and maps, as well as photographs of the city before and after the 1956 earthquake.

Further north along the rim of the caldera, the Santorini Foundation is housed in galleries carved into the rock, with an exhibition of photographic reproductions displaying in color and life-size Akrotiri frescoes (daily 10: 00-20: 00; € 3). To the north of the main square, already on the outskirts of the city, is located the vast Ethnographic Museum of Lignos (daily 10: 00-14: 00 and 18: 00-20: 00; € 3), in which the atmosphere of a 19th century house, with a wine cellar, is completely preserved , cellar and workshops of the time, there is also a gallery and photo archive.

 • Food and nightlife in Fira

Restaurants in Fira are designed mainly for tourists, but for the deliberately excellent food and fantastic views (prices are appropriate) it is worth going to Avis, under the Loukas hotel, or to Flame of the Volcano: go to Firostefani, past the cable car station - this is the last restaurant on side of the caldera. Mama's House, just north of the main square on the road to Oyu, is a great place to welcome backpackers, cheap hearty food and views from the balcony.

On Eritru-Stavru, the first street behind the main square, the old Nikolas tavern defends its fidelity to ancient customs, but getting there can be difficult. The best choice for reasonable prices is in Naoussa on the same street, but to the north, on the right side - up the stairs. Nearby Sphinx offers exotic pasta dishes with a Greek flavor, while Calderimi, by the cathedral, offers excellent Italian and Mediterranean cuisine.

Most of the nightlife gravitates towards Eritra Stavrou, northwest of the main square: Murphy's Bar is an expensive but fun Irish pub with a must-have fun, and a little higher up, the more pretentious Enigma and Koo chill out to quiet candlelit music. The best place to admire the caldera is from the Franco's and Palia Kameni cocktail bars, although the audience there is very sophisticated and the prices are appropriate, but they are unrivaled in terms of location. A more relaxing atmosphere at the Kira Thira bar, but far from the caldera, which is offset by a selection of wines for tasting. A new summer cinema has recently opened near the Ethnographic Museum.

Northern part of Santorini island

Once behind Fira, you will be pleasantly surprised: volcanic soils are very fertile, and every piece of land is cultivated: on the island of Santarini, terrace farming is widespread. The main crops are cereals, tomatoes, pistachios and grapes, with manual labor prevailing in agriculture. An interesting, albeit difficult, walking path to Oia, located 12 kilometers northwest of Fira, along a path rich in natural beauty, starting in Imerovigli, 3 kilometers from Fira, and winding along the rim of the caldera: the road takes about 2 hours.

A conical rock of Skaros protrudes from the cliff, on which there was once an important village and a Venetian fortress, as reminiscent of the scanty traces of buildings that have survived to this day. The rock is also called Zamkovaya, and you can climb to its top along a steep, but completely distinguishable path - of course, for the incomparable views of the caldera and the whole of Thira. There are many luxurious apartments in Imerovigli, close to the caldera, including the Astra, but in order to settle there, you need to book a place in advance. From the more moderately priced Kastro Katerinas, the caldera is visible only from the large balcony and from the bar.

 • Oia town and surroundings

The most charming village on the island, Oia, was once the main fishing port of the Aegean, but economic crises, wars, earthquakes and the depletion of fish stocks in traditional fishing areas have left the village in decline. The 1956 earthquake caused great destruction, but the restored village looks very beautiful: traditional white houses cling to the mountain slopes. There is also much to see here besides the caldera and the village architecture: for example, the Naval Museum (Monday and Wednesday-Sunday 10: 00-14: 00 and 17: 00-20: 00; € 3) and the modest ruins of a Venetian fortress. Oia is nicer and quieter than Fira: there is a post office, an internet cafe and you can rent a bike. Foreign books are sold at Atlantis Books.

There are also travel agencies: look for the oldest and most reliable travel agency "Karvounis" on the pedestrian street. Accommodation is offered mainly in restored old buildings: the traditional Lauda hotel, the popular Anemones hotel, in the center - the Fregata hotel with good views, and the luxurious Perivolas Traditional Houses complex is built into a cliff next to a reservoir at the very edge of the cliff. Adjacent to the bus station (look for signs) is the magnificent Oia Youth Hostel (14-16 € per person) with a terrace and shady courtyard, a good bar and clean bedrooms - breakfast included in the price of the night.

The restaurants are better the further you are from the central hill and the closer you are to new buildings: Anemomilos and Laokastri are quite indicative. The restaurant Karma, which serves oriental dishes, is pleasant, which is on the way to the hostel, but real gluttons are expected in 1800 - this institution is considered the best restaurant on the island: the cuisine is Mediterranean and very sophisticated. Nightlife revolves around watching sunsets, for which people travel to Oia from all over the island, which turns into traffic jams and higher prices, although the sunsets are the same everywhere - in Oia and in Fira.

Below the village, two staircases of more than 200 steps descend hundreds of meters to two small harbors: Ammoudi - a fishing harbor, and in Armenia - a marina for excursion boats. Both have good fish taverns, and the one in Armenia is skilled in grilling octopus (for breakfast). 1 kilometer east of Oia is the peaceful traditional village of Phoenix. 2 kilometers north of Oia, Baxedes Beach is perhaps quieter, but in Baxedes, just 1 kilometer to the east, you will find a secluded promontory with antique burials where graves are carved into the rock.

East coast of Santorini island

Santorini's beaches to the east and south are quite extraordinary: long black strips of volcanic sand that is so heated by the sun that it becomes scalding hot by noon. However, in the summer, the crowds of vacationers are excessive. Much to the south, Kamari, favored by vacationers on vouchers: the tourist spirit is felt there stronger. And yet it is cleaner and quieter there than on many other beaches, and there is also a good diving center. You can stay on the seaside, for example at the southern end of the beach, at the Nikolina Hotel with clean, albeit modest, rooms, or at the spacious but dated White House, or a little further along the coast at the friendly Sea Side Hotel.

The Rose Bay Hotel is a more expensive option, but the location is also pleasant: there is a pond nearby, and far from the noisy road along the coast. At the foot of Mount Profitis Iliyas, there is a wonderful option - Villa Ostria, a friendly family-run oasis of studios and apartments that contrasts nicely with the huge resort hotels. Locals love to go to the tavern with Psistaria Kritikos, where the food is as good as in few other places on the island. From Kamari to the village of Messarya, the path is long and uphill, and walking will rather tire than please, but there is a bus here. Kamari is teeming with cafes and restaurants, mostly behind the beach, though many are disproportionately expensive or uninspiring.

Saliveros near Nikolina offers typical tavern food at reasonable prices, while Almira, near the Sea Side Rooms, has a more sophisticated restaurant with only slightly higher prices. There is not enough nightlife here: Kamari is a family resort, but an open summer cinema next to the campsite is good, and in summer buses run until 1 am, so after going to the cinema it is easy to return to Fira. To the west of Kamari rises the most significant Byzantine monument of the island - the Church of Panagia Episkopi. The temple, erected in the 11th century, was the site of centuries of strife between Orthodox Greeks and Catholics, but today visitors are most interested in the carved iconostasis of bluish marble with white splashes.

Beyond Cape Perissa, the beach is simpler and noisier. The location and the abundance of cheap rooms draw crowds of people with backpacks here. Just behind the beach is the Perissa Beach Camping, which has enough shade, but next to it there are a couple of noisy bars, having fun after midnight. On the road to Perissa, a simple and very modest youth hostel Anna is open (8 € per person). There are a lot of cheap rooms and expensive hotels in the area: the modern Meltemi Hotel by the highway, the owners of which also operate the neighboring water park, is quite a decent option. The beach stretches for 7 kilometers to the west, along which only rare tamarisks provide shadow, but there are many coastal bars. Dichtia and Aquarius are excellent restaurants here.

Cape Mesa Vuno wedged between Kamari and Perissa, on which ancient Tira stood (Tuesday-Sunday 8: 30-14: 30; free): what you see there is left of a village built after the disaster, in the 9th century before ad. There are excursion buses from Kamari (8 €), staying at the site for 2 hours (contact “Ancient Thira Tours”, at the foot of the hill), but you can also get to the antiquities on a donkey (15 €) or walk along the cobbled trail starting by the square in Kamari, next to the Argo department store. There is the same trail from Perissa: the way along any of them takes no more than an hour. The trail winds up to the whitewashed church by the cave, inside of which there are a few freshwater springs of the island. Then the track crosses the highway and ends in the saddle between Mesa Vuno and Profitis Iliyas, where very expensive drinks are sold from a truck.

From here, the trail, passing the church of the 4th century BC, passes Artemidor's temenos (temenos is the fence of a pagan temple): bas-reliefs with images of a dolphin, an eagle and a lion survived - these are the images of Poseidon, Zeus and Apollo, respectively. Then the path leads along the ancient sacred path, past the ruins of the agora and the theater. For the most part, it is difficult to understand where these ruins were located and what they once were (they belong mainly to the Hellenistic and Roman eras), but the site is impressive in its vastness, and the panorama of the ruins is awe-inspiring.

Inland areas of Santorini

About 2 kilometers from Perissa in the direction from the sea, on the highway going west, is the village of Emborio, the largest on the island, although tourists hardly pay attention to it. And in vain - this is truly a storehouse of treasures, if we talk about the intricate local architecture, in addition to which the ruins of a medieval Venetian fortress, which once reigned over the surrounding landscape, are very noticeable. More northerly - one of the oldest villages in Santorini. The scars left by the 1956 earthquake are still visible in the heaps of old houses and streets.

The village stretches up to another Venetian stronghold with several churches, and no one will bother you to climb all the battlements of the fortress, from where you can see the entire island and its neighbors in the Aegean Sea. A 30-minute climb along a steep winding road to the south will lead you to the Profitis Iliyas Monastery, where Greek radio and television antennas and NATO observation post locators are installed. The monastery is almost empty: there is only one monk who looks after the church, so that the monastery comes to life only once a year, on the day of remembrance of the prophet Elijah, when crowds of people flock here from all over the island to celebrate. The views here are beautiful, and along the old path that starts at the entrance to the monastery, about an hour's walk to the ancient Tyra.

As if by contrast, Messaria (30 minutes walk to the north) is distinguished by a silhouette consisting of only church domes, and houses are crowded below, in a ravine. The completely restored 19th century mansion by Archondico Aryiru (daily 9: 00-14: 00 and 16: 30-19: 00; € 4) combines elements of neoclassicism and local architecture. There are several distilleries scattered to the east, and the largest of them - "Boutari" (just behind Megalochori) and "Santo" (near Pyrgos) - invite you on exciting excursions (2-3 €) using multimedia.

A little off the road to Kamari are smaller distilleries, and among them are famous for the hospitality of Canava Roussos, Antoniou and Koutsoyianopoulos with the Wine Museum (daily 12: 00-20: 00; € 4 including tasting). In short, if you wish, you can get a very solid idea of winemaking. But regardless of the level of the excursion, it will not be complete until you taste the famous Santorini dessert wine visanto (it was created in imitation of the Tuscan "wines santo") - in fact, this is one of the best wines produced in. The price of a tour of a small distillery (2-5 €) usually includes the price of tasting, and in large ones you can buy samples of the products you like - at selling prices.

Akrotiri and the south coast of Santorini

Investigations of the ancient settlement of Minoan Thira near Akrotiri (closed for restoration at the time of writing, check the schedule in the museum of prehistoric Thira in Fira), on the southwestern tip of the island, have found a lot of evidence of the existence of a once flourishing Minoan colony here. Tunnels cut through the volcanic ash led to the remains of structures two or three stories high, which were first damaged by an earthquake and then burned down in the eruption. Professor Marinatos, who led the excavation and is still considered a hero on the island, died under a collapsed wall and was buried nearby, on the site he was excavating.

To this day, only a small part of the largest Minoan city outside Crete has been excavated, but research continues, a protective canopy and footpaths have been installed, so you can walk along the streets of the ancient Minoan city. Its walls were painted with bright frescoes, and some of them can now be seen in, and magnificent colorful reproductions remain in Santorini - in the Thira Foundation in Fira. To avoid the crowds and heat, get here early in the morning.

Buses from Fira and Perissa go to Akrotiri itself. The newest and best campsite on the island - Caldera View Camping is located here, as is the wonderful Glaros tavern, on the way to the well-fed Kokkini Ammos beach. Another good tavern, Dolphins, is located above the water. Half a kilometer from Minoan antiquities to Kokkini-Ammos, and this beach is also a vivid sight: high reddish-red rocks above the sand of the same color (the name translates as "red sands"). In a cave carved out at the base of the cliff, you will find a stall selling soft drinks. But while this beach is better than the one right below the archaeological site, it is often too crowded in summer.

 • South coast of Santorini island

There are many black-sand beaches beneath the surreal pumice-like rocks that dominate the "lunar" landscapes around Cape Exomitis on the southern tip of the island. The beaches of Vlyhad, west of the promontory, and Agios Eorios, to the east, are accessed by decent roads that branch off the highway to Emborio, although buses do not run there and there are no amenities. A walk west of ancient Akrotiri (about 1 hour) will take you to the lighthouse at Cape Akrotiri, from where the islands of Kameni and Thirassia are remarkably visible.

Islets of Kameni and Thirassia

From Fira and Oia to the charred volcanic islands of Paleya-Kameni and Neya-Kameni there are excursion boats and local ferries, reaching the relatively untouched islet of Thirassia, once part of the current island of Santirini, but torn away from it by another eruption in the 3rd century BC. At Paleya Kameni you can swim from the ship to hot sulphurous mud springs, and Neya Kameni, also with hot mud fountains, offers the chance to make a difficult climb to the smoking crater, which still shows signs of volcanic activity.

Thirassia is an excellent hideaway from the tourist crowds that flood Santorini, except at lunchtime when excursion boats visit the island. The rest of the time, Thirassia is as quiet as anywhere else in the Cyclades, and the views are as stunning as Santorini itself. The flaws are also obvious: there is no sandy beach, no nightlife and it is impossible to change currency. Sightseeing boats mostly head to Korfos, as the pebble strip is called, surrounded by fishermen's houses and high cliffs. On the stepped path from Korfos you will climb to Manolas, which is almost 200 meters higher. They move here and now on donkeys, so stalls for them can be seen in both villages.

Clinging to the rim of the caldera, Manolas is a small but pretty island village worth a look to get an idea of what Santorini looked like before the advent of tourism. Locals make do with a bakery and a couple of shops and enjoy wonderful octopus souvlaki at the friendly Panorama and Candouni taverns, which open around noon for tourists, while Dimitrios Nomikos rents out rooms from which the entire village is visible from the south side. From Manolas, the best is along the miraculous road to the south: about halfway you will see the Profitis Elias church on the hill on the left.

From here, an old and overgrown track descends through the deserted village of Kera on the slope of the caldera, eventually going parallel to the road to the Kimisis monastery, which is above the southern edge of the island. To the west, in a quarry where pumice was mined, in 1867, a few years after the discoveries in Akrotiri, traces of the Minoan civilization were found, but today there is nothing to see there. Ferries to Thirassia leave the pier at Ormos Athinos 5 times a week - inquire at the Santo Star in Fira. Renting a car or bicycle is easy, but take care of the fuel first.

Day trips organized by travel agencies in Fira and Oia involve climbing the active (or rather dormant) crater on Neya Kameni and bathing in hot mud springs at Paleya Kameni, and then stopping for 2 or 3 hours at Thirassia. Prices - from about 10 € if you go on a large ferry, to 30 € for a more comfortable trip with a guide on a caik. The transparent-bottomed ship Calypso charges 20 € for the excursion and at the end of the journey sails over volcanic reefs so that passengers understand how deep the volcanic crater Santorini goes.

In contact with

One of the most famous Greek islands, located in the Aegean Sea near Crete. This is one of the most beautiful places on our planet and a popular resort, which attracts vacationers from all over the world.

Over the centuries of its existence, this place has had many names. It is believed that the very first was Strongila or Round, since initially the island was a single rounded area. There is a legend that the sea god Triton gave the Argonauts a round lump of earth, which became the island of Santorini. They named him Callisto or Handsome.

Around 1500 BC the strongest volcanic eruption happened, which provoked an earthquake. The middle part of Callisto sank very quickly into the water.

Only fragments of the island remained above the sea surface, forming a crescent. That is why there is an opinion, which is shared by many scientists, that the famous Atlantis and the archipelago - its remnants - were located here.

In the 12th century, the largest island is named Santorini. Here was the Church of St. Irene, so foreign sailors called it first Santo, after Santa Irina, gradually reducing it to Santorini. Later, the name was transferred to the entire archipelago. Sometimes the largest island is still called this way, although its official name is Tira or Fira.

Santorini belongs to the Cyclades Islands, located in the southern part of the Aegean Sea. The Santorini archipelago comprises five islands: Aspro, Palea Kameni, Nea Kameni, Thirassia and Thira. The last one is the biggest. Its area is about 76 sq. km, the length of the coastline is 70 km. The two largest islands are inhabited, the three smaller ones are not. The most remote parts of the archipelago are separated by only 17 km.

Santorini is a volcanic island. The relief of the islands is mountainous, very rocky. The shores are mostly steep, descending steeply to the sea. The height of the terrain above sea level varies from 200 to 500 m.

After an eruption that changed the relief of the island, the volcano sank down, forming a huge caldera, which was flooded by the waters of the Aegean Sea. Today, there is a deep bay at this place, in the center of which there are 2 small islets. The volcano Santorini is at rest, but regularly wakes up and erupts.

Santorini history

Scientists have proved that the first population appeared on the island of Santorini about one and a half thousand years before the terrible earthquake. These were representatives of the pre-Greek Cretan culture, as evidenced by the excavations at Akrotiri. A powerful eruption of the volcano, located approximately in the center of the island, interrupted the development of an ancient civilization. The volcano with part of the land sank into the water, causing a terrible tsunami. A wave with a height of about 100 m reached Crete, with a fierce force fell on it and destroyed the Palace of Knossos and other buildings.

The strongest earthquakes and volcanic ash ejection completed the catastrophe. The highly developed Minoan civilization ceased to exist. After a terrible natural disaster, Santorini remained uninhabited for a long time. Only five centuries later it was re-populated by the Phoenicians. Later Greeks settled here, turning Santorini into a naval base on the Aegean Sea.

Actually, the island got its name from Thira thanks to the name of the Thebes hero Tiras, who settled in Santorini. After the collapse of the Roman Empire, the archipelago falls under the jurisdiction of Venice.

In the XIII century, it was captured by the Byzantine Greeks, but three decades later Venice returned it to itself. Over the next two centuries, Santorini suffered from endless pirate attacks, as a result of which the population was reduced to three hundred.

In 1537, the archipelago was captured by the pirate Barbarossa and transferred to Turkey. During the period of Turkish rule, Santorini developed rapidly. He possessed the largest merchant fleet at that time in the Aegean Sea. The archipelago received independence in 1821 together with all of Greece. Since that time, the main area of business in Santorini has been shipping, as well as the production of unique wine and tomatoes.

The last century was marked for the archipelago by the fascist occupation during the Second World War and two earthquakes provoked by a volcanic eruption. The last one, which happened in 1956, was especially strong, when many buildings were destroyed and people died. Many of those who survived left the island.

Life began to return to the archipelago only in the mid-60s.

Santorini landmarks

All tourists arriving in the archipelago must visit its most interesting sights:

Caldera is a depression formed during a volcanic eruption as a result of the failure of a large area of land. Now it is a deep bay, in the middle of which there is a young active volcano Santorini. It is uninhabited, but there are guided tours. Tourists are brought to the volcano by small boats, then they are led along paths to the crater itself. Fans of extreme sports can go to the volcano in a small submarine.

Oia village (also often found under the wrong name Oia). It is famous for its special architecture. It is a unique combination of stately Venetian medieval buildings and small village houses. There are narrow streets, snow-white churches with piercing blue domes and charming houses.

Oia is home to the Maritime Museum and the Musical Instrument Museum. Very interesting are the Captains' Houses, built at the end of the 19th century, and the magnificent Old Mill. The main attraction of this place is the beautiful sunsets, hundreds of tourists gather to see them every day.

Cape Akrotiriti. Here are the ruins of a Minoan city that was destroyed by a terrible volcanic eruption 3,500 years ago. During the excavations, buildings of two and three floors, decorated with frescoes, shops and workshops were discovered.

The monastery of Elijah the Prophet, built on the highest point of Tyra. From here a magnificent view of the whole of Santorini opens up. The monastery houses the most interesting museums of religious art and folk art. Every year on July 20, a big holiday with a fair is held here.

Santorini beaches. They are sandy and very clean. Thanks to the volcanic origin of the archipelago and rich mineralization, the local sand has acquired the widest range of shades: from delicate milky to pink, reddish, green and even black. Therefore, local beaches are colorful. Such a mixture looks especially picturesque at the bottom of the sea.

Getting to Santorini is quite easy. There is an airport where local airlines regularly arrive from Athens, Thessaloniki, Rhodes, Crete and Mykonos. The number of charter flights is enormous.

Ferries and speedboats connect the archipelago with Crete, Rhodes, Kos and Athens. The port of Santorini is visited by sea yachts and cruise ships bringing tourists here from all over the world.

The pearl of the Cyclades, the magnificent island of Santorini is considered one of the most picturesque, romantic and mysterious Greek islands. Locals claim that the island has a heart that beats out to sea, in the mountains and on land. Everyone who has felt this beating is sure to come back here again and again. They are attracted by the calm power that hides under the deep dark waters of the Caldera, the piercing blue sky and the bright white with blue roofs "toy" towns of ancient Santorini, over which neither time nor the natural elements has power.

We present you a map showing the main islands of Greece

Today we will start our acquaintance with one of the islands of Greece - Santorini.

Santoriniis one of the most beautiful islands in the Cyclades. Apparently, the island owes its rare beauty to the volcanic eruption (by the way, active to this day), which happened in 1650 BC. Part of the crater sank under the water, and the remaining half in the shape of a crescent formed a sheer cliff almost 900 meters high, breaking off right into the sea, and a natural huge bay, where numerous cruise liners drop anchors during the season.

White houses here and there interspersed with bright blue domes of churches, many small shops and artisan shops scattered along small winding streets, archaeological sites of the Minoan era and phantasmagoric beaches with black sand and pebbles, all against the constant backdrop of a bright blue sea.

The Santorini archipelago is a group of five islands:

 • Main island - Tyra (Thira) 75.8 sq. km, coastline - 70 km, population about 8000 inhabitants; The island owes its origin to a volcanic eruption in the middle of the 17th century BC. Part of the island is under water, while the other part has formed a sheer cliff of nine hundred meters with a steep cliff. Also in the place of the eruption a convenient bay was formed, where merchant ships, liners, yachts anchor. You can get here on foot, counting seven hundred steps, by funicular, riding on the back of a stubborn donkey.
 • Terasia(Thirassia) 9.3 sq. km, about 250 inhabitants;
 • Aspronisi (Aspronisi) 0.1 sq. km, not inhabited;
 • Staraya Kameni(Palea Kameni) 0.5 sq. km, 1 inhabitant; formed much later Nea Kameni. The island is famous for its hot healing springs.
 • New Stone (Nea Kameni) 3.4 sq. km, formed as a result of an underwater eruption. Its original name is Mikri Kameni due to its small size. Later, as a result of the incessant activity of the volcano, the island grew and was named Nea Kameni. It is uninhabited and covers an area of over three square kilometers. Its dormant volcano can wake up at any moment and begin to spew lava. The mouth of the volcano is at a depth of one thousand meters. The soil around it is very hot. This place is distinguished by the unpleasant smell of hydrogen sulphide fumes. The landscape is completely lifeless.

Many legends are associated with the Greek island of Santorini: some call it the Lost Atlantis, others Pompeii of the Aegean Sea, where the past merges with the future ...

In recent years, the hypothesis that the Greek island of Santorini was the center of the legendary Atlantis has become popular again. The mystery of the ancient civilization excites the minds of scientists and writers since the time of Plato. One of the most beloved myths since childhood has regained its real longitude and latitude.

Scientists believe that Santorini was one of the centers of the Cretan-Minoan civilization, which around 1500 BC. was at the zenith of its prime. The inhabitants of the island of Santorini knew the system of measures and calculations, they mined lime and built complex vaulted structures, painted the walls with fantastic frescoes. They successfully developed agriculture, weaving, and pottery.

And so it all happened until the volcano of one of the Cyclades islands ruined the refined and legendary Cretan-Minoan civilization. The volcano exploded and threw out a huge amount of pumice and ash, which covered the island with a layer 300 meters thick. The fury of the volcano collapsed and sank the central and western parts of the island, so that only the crescent eastern part remained to rise above the waves ... Everything around was destroyed.

During excavations in palaces and houses perfectly preserved under layers of volcanic dust, no human remains were found. The same mysterious phenomenon has been noted during numerous excavations on the island of Crete. People just disappeared, as if evaporated. As if someone had warned them.

Nobody knows how this could have happened. Perhaps the smoking volcano was a sign of dire events to come. Or the priests saw prophetic dreams and prompted the Santorians to leave the island, like Moses, who led the people through the desert.

Or maybe it was the wrath of the gods that wiped out the powerful and overwhelmingly proud Atlanteans from the face of the earth? ..

Life on a volcano

Many centuries ago, local residents built small, one- and two-story houses, facing the sea, right in the rocks. Flooded with golden sunlight and crowded on the edge of a three-hundred-meter abyss, they seem to support each other, looming more and more over the abyss. The houses, called by the locals "scaffolds", are closely adjacent to the temples of different confessions.

Santorini has 330 Orthodox and Catholic churches. That is, every third building on a tiny island is a snow-white church with a blue dome. All this, combined with the waters of the Aegean Sea, is a surprisingly mesmerizing sight.

To understand the addiction of local residents to the construction of blue domes and flat bell towers, you need to try to forget for at least a couple of minutes about the hustle and bustle that surrounds us in our native cities, and try to understand the meaning of the expression "living on a volcano" literally. After all, the volcano has not fallen asleep for thousands of years, but continues to breathe ...

And the previous XX century was not calm for him. The last time the activity of the Santorini volcano was observed in January 1950. Hot vapors constantly rise from the crater of the volcano. Those who love extreme sports can visit the volcano by boat. The source that feeds the volcano is believed to be 1000 meters below sea level.

However, the Greeks have already adapted to what, in fact, cannot be adapted to. The inhabitants of Santorini try to predict the mood of the volcano in order to be caught off guard while eating or drinking the local divine drink "Caldera" (the famous Santorini wine "Caldera" is named after a huge lake of volcanic origin).

By the way, Santorini is generally famous for its unique wines. Probably because the grapes, twisting into rings so as not to be carried away by the wind, grow here on large stones, which heat up during the day, and at night give the accumulated heat to the vine that winds around them.

However, all these frightening details cannot stop the flow of tourists striving to Santorini. It is really worth visiting here - it is better to spend at least a week on the island in order to have time to see its sights and feel the special atmosphere.

The main thing here is not archaeological finds and ruins of ancient settlements, although they are also present in large numbers.

The main thing is the environment: nature, weather, architecture.

In addition to such an impressive historical background, Santorini is famous for its beaches with black, red and white sand, exquisite wine, peace and quiet of well-groomed streets, mesmerizing landscapes, the purest water of the sea of amazing blue - you will involuntarily agree with the inhabitants of the island, who believe that to truly appreciate this the island is possible only after parting with it ...

Sunny summers and warm winters are ideal climatic conditions for tourism. Santorini has a long hot season and a short rainy season. The rainy seasons usually take place in November and February. Humidity is relatively high (in fact, it is the main source of water for vegetation). Temperature fluctuations are negligible throughout the year, and snow is rare. Temperatures on the island of Santorini: spring 17 ° C - 22 ° C, summer 22 ° C - 40 ° C, autumn 25 ° C - 17 ° C, winter 17 ° C - 7 ° C. Fairly strong winds, as a rule, come from the north (first of all, the Meltemi wind in August), however, southerly winds are sometimes very harsh.

The rocks destroyed by the explosions fall vertically into the sea - the height of the cliffs reaches 300 meters. From the outer, western, side, there are gentle beaches. Volcanic rocks are picturesque in themselves - coal-black and terracotta-red: huge monoliths of the same color or in the form of rounded pebbles, fine sand. Here you can swim in a hot spring gushing from the depths of the volcano, see the outlets of volcanic gases. The water in some places is unnaturally azure - here it is saturated with various compounds. This was used by local sailors, who dropped the anchor here for "chemical cleaning" of the ship's hull.
Probably because black rock prevails here, and the deep depression of the inner bay of Santorini plays the role of a huge lens - it is always 10 degrees hotter here than on the neighboring islands. In winter, the island resists winds of such force that all the trees on it grow obliquely. Mainly cherry tomatoes and grapes are grown here - bushes and vines are spread on the ground, pressing them with stones.

Despite the complexity and, even, the danger of life in Santorini, people have been constantly living here since the Bronze Age. They developed a special system of attaching buildings to steep rocks and to each other - houses and churches, shops and taverns often have "continuation" - rooms carved into the mountain. They seem to lend their shoulders to their neighbors - narrow streets climb up, sandwiched by walls, rising straight along the roofs. The towns and villages of Santorini - Thira, Oia, Kamari and others - resemble delicate white-caramel foam on the inaccessible mountain peaks.

Local residents, somehow, have a particularly artistic attitude to their life - not only their houses are ideally bleached or painted with delicate paint, but even the ends of stone steps or parapets are shaded with color. As a result, the villages of Santorini leave the impression of naive painting - juicy, “wrong”, with shifted accents of light and shadow.

Fearless islanders hope for the best and ask for the intercession of the saints - there are several hundred churches with bells on the small island. Most of them belong to separate families and are closed, but you can freely walk on their domes, between the belfries.

Fira city. Santorini

Holidays in Santorini are expensive. Locals add costs to guests by charging prices for anything you might like or need. However, it makes sense to spend a vacation here at least once - impressions are guaranteed to last for a lifetime.

Romance for two

Do I need to write about the fact that admiring the sunset and moonlit night together is much more pleasant than alone. As well as sleeping on a huge bed built right into the rock. How, in fact, and overcome the 600 steep steps connecting the only port of Santorini and the heart of the capital Fira. At nightfall, lanterns are lit on the stairs, and the descent turns into a river of fire, flowing from the top of the island into the sea.

This island, lost in the Aegean Sea, has a centuries-old tradition of weddings. And since the last century, a marriage concluded by the mayor of Santorini on the veranda of a luxury hotel against the backdrop of a blazing sunset has been recognized as legal all over the world. Romantic ceremonies are held both on the decks of old sailing ships and in the cozy rooms of local restaurants.

And also a strong magnet for lovers in Santorini in a unique play of light. You will not see such sunsets as on the volcanic island of Santorini anywhere in the world. In the evenings, candles are lit everywhere on this dozing volcano, and the verandas of houses, comparable to white eagle's nests, turn into one huge auditorium, in front of which a magnificent action is played: a red pulsating ball slowly rolls over the horizon, leaving behind flashes of all colors of the rainbow.

Santorini beaches (island beaches overview)

Santorini beach entitled - Red Beach... It is the hallmark of the island, its photographs are sold everywhere. This beach is one of the most beautiful on the island, which is located near the village of Akrotiri.

It got its color because of the volcanic plates that are on the cape. Surprisingly, the sand on the beach is never hot, hundreds of thousands of tourists visiting the island come to admire this miracle every year. It is very painful to walk and sit on such sand, so there are many sun loungers on the beach, which you can use and enjoy the beauty of this miracle. As for the sea, it is very clean and transparent, we especially recommend snorkelling.
The beach is located 12 kilometers from the center of Fira.

Santorini Beach - Perissa
Perissa, located 15 kilometers southeast of the city of Thira (Fira). This is the most tourist area of Santorini, in the season - the village is overcrowded from the invasion of travelers. Tourists are attracted here - first of all, the long beach with black sand and Mesa Vouno - a rock that rises from the depths of the sea.
Perissa Beach has a great view at night when the tavern lights are on.

The village itself, after which the beach is named, during the high season turns into a small tourist town that offers a variety of attractions for tourists. There are a large number of hotels, private apartments, restaurants, taverns, cafes, nightclubs and beach cafes.

From Perissa, you can get to the ruins of the ancient city of Thira, you can travel by walking or riding a donkey.

In Perissa, there is a 16-17 century chapel of St. Irene.

Kamari beach Kamari - a fairly well-known resort located near Fira, it is distinguished by sandy beaches. Z
Kamari is located ten kilometers southeast of the center of Thira and is on the opposite side of the island (relative to Pirissa beach).

Pressa and Kamari are very similar to each other, all the same black sand and the huge rock Mesa Vouno, which rises from the sea.

The beach offers sun loungers, umbrellas and various types of water activities.

In the village itself, you will find a large number of hotels, restaurants, bars, taverns and nightclubs.

From Kamari, through the mountain you can get to the ruins of Ancient Tire, and by boat to the uninhabited islands of Anafi.

Perivolos beach
Perivolos is located 10 kilometers south of Thira and 3 kilometers from Piresa beach. This is a picturesque beach at the southern tip of the island. The water on this beach is clear and unusually blue. The beach is considered one of the quietest in Santorini.

Perivolos is a continuation of the Perissa beach and Agios Georgis because there are no natural barriers between them (rocks or impassable places), in fact, one passes into the other. You can get from Perissa on foot, by bus, or take a taxi.

Beach Perivolos, in some sources called as "Black Beach" - this is because of the black stones that dot the coastline.
There are many taverns, restaurants and bars on the beach. We recommend taking fish dishes in one of them - these are the main local delicacies.

Agios Georgios beach
Agios Georgios - The most touristic beach in Santorini. Located 3.5 km from Perissa Beach and 12 km southeast of Thira. This area provides exceptional service to tourists - hotels for every budget, a huge selection of bars and restaurants. At Agios Georgios, most of the taverns and restaurants are located on the promenade along the beach.

On the beach itself, there is a large selection of water activities, incl. windsurfing, water cycling. This is one of the most ideal holiday destinations.

Monolithos beach
Monolithos is located near the beach to Kamari, in the area near the airport, 7 km. east of Tire

This is a calmer beach than the ones described above, but nevertheless there are some good hotels, restaurants and cafes on it. The disadvantage of the beach is a strong wind, during gusts it can raise sand. The beach has sun loungers, a playground, a football field, at the end of the beach there are trees under which you can relax.

Cape Columbo
It is one of the wildest beaches on the island and one of the quietest. Located 12 km northeast of Tire.

The beach is a long strip of dark sand that later turns into a cliff.

Vlychada beach
Located 10 km. South of Tire (Fira)

The beach has gray sand (like the rest of the island), there are sun loungers. Interesting - beautiful rock formations, yes, 2 pipes of an abandoned brick factory.

Vourvoulos beach
Vourvolos - located just 7 km. from Tire (Fira) is located to the north-east.

A wonderful place on the island - you and the sea, not quite hyped like other beaches of the island, which contributes to a secluded relaxing vacation. The beach has clear turquoise water. Be sure to visit the village of Karterados, with its architectural beauty and elegant style.

Disadvantages:
There is a lot of rubbish on the beach, quite often there is a strong wind, big waves.

We choose him - if you are a hermit and want to forget about civilization.

Akrotiri located on the south side of Santorini. The sand on the beach is red. There are taverns right in the rock cave where you can stop and have a snack. A sea voyage on a small kaiki boat to the ancient volcano will leave a lasting impression.

Santorini resorts are waiting for you! The wind of change, romance, magical sunsets and the breath of time - this will remain in your memory forever. You will certainly want to come back again, having only once been here.
