Laguardia, the capital of the Rioja Alavesa wine region in the Basque Country, is a fortified medieval bastion perched on a hilltop surrounded by endless vineyards. Complete rural pastoral.

Life in this town goes on the same way as hundreds of years ago: without haste, in the work in the vineyards and savoring good wines in the company of friends during the working afternoon, and in the local siesta. The entire city of Laguardia is made up of several medieval streets with ancient houses and palaces surrounded by a high, well-preserved fortress wall with 5 towers. New neighborhoods grew up around the fortress wall, without disturbing the rural idyll at all.

While vacationing in Spain, be sure to visit this medieval town located in the wine cellars. Stop by a couple of bars to enjoy the famous local wines, and go down to the cellars of the wine bodegas located here. Walk through mysterious dungeons. Enjoy the aesthetics of local architecture and culture and be sure to visit the Church of Santa María de los Reyes, famous for its polychrome 14th-century Gothic portal, miraculously preserved.

In the vicinity of Laguardia, in Villa Lucia, you can visit the Wine Museum, where you will learn all the secrets of wine production. Tour the vineyards and enjoy the local unique landscapes that completely change their appearance with the seasons. And, of course, take excursions to the famous local wineries, which were designed by the best architects in the world.

History of Laguardia

Many archaeological sites have been and continue to be found around Laguardia, clearly indicating that this area was densely populated since ancient times. The tribes that lived in the vicinity of what is now Laguardia left many traces of their life and activities in these areas.

These traces lead us to the Neolithic era, when great changes occurred in the way people lived. Hunting and gathering began to give way to livestock and crop production, and the creation of surpluses involved storage, transportation and trade.

Dolmens and burials indicate that in the period from 3000 to 1000 AD. BC e. The region was inhabited by small rural communities. The first traces of agriculture in the Basque Country are located near Laguardia.

In the Rioja region, one of the most spectacular and important dolmens was also found at the foot of the Sierra de Cantabria, and it is also considered the oldest.

The first large and important settlement in the Basque Country was La Hoya, which dates back to the 15th century BC. The city was protected by a wall, from which we reached 360 meters. Initially it was made of timber, and later from masonry.

In the 4th century BC. e. The city was captured by the Celts, bringing here a more advanced civilization. With their arrival, they began to build stone houses, make waterproof roofs, and pave the streets. Houses are divided into zones: entrance, kitchen, warehouse.

As a result of the introduction of new technologies in agriculture and new economic forms by the Celts, the city became an important economic and organizational center of the region.

In the 3rd century BC. e. The city died out for unknown reasons.

But already during the Roman Empire the settlement was revived. Many traces of Roman culture have been found here. The most significant of them is a huge oven, two meters long and one and a half meters high, for firing raw materials. As well as ceramic workshops, where they produced not only household items, but also building materials: bricks, tiles, ceramic tiles...

In the 10th century, probably around 908, King Sancho II "Abarca" of Navarre, son of King Garcia Sanchez, built a castle on a hill that dominated the entire region, present-day La Rioja. His goal was the protection and defense of Navarre from the Moors and Castilians.

From the day of its founding, Laguardia was destined for an important military role and a defensive mission assigned by the kings, which determined its character and history.

The Castle of Laguardia, mentioned by many writers, was one of the most important residences for the kings of Navarre. Doña Blanca de Navarra was born within its walls and in the same castle she married the King of Castile, Sancho III the Desired, in 1150. But in 1875, during the reconstruction of the city, the castle collapsed.

In 1164, Sancho IV, brother of Doña Blanca, taking into account the increased population of Laguardia, granted it fueros and raised it to the rank of a city. What makes its residents free and guarantees various benefits:

  • free market
  • tax exemption
  • ban on "God's judgments"

These privileges were universal for all its inhabitants and also extended to the settlements that were under the jurisdiction of Laguardia.

The granting of immunity gave rise to a large increase in population, attracting traders and artisans who arrived under the protection of the fortified castle and built their homes here, as well as new villages around Laguardia.

In the turbulent times of the 12th-13th centuries, when Navarre continued to fight with the Moors and Castile, the king of Navarre, Sancho VII the Strong, ordered the fortification of Laguardia, and not only the castle, but the entire village, which made it an impregnable stronghold and bastion. Higher and better fortified walls were erected with quadrangular watchtowers protruding from the walls, and decorated with battlements and loopholes.

While maintaining its fortification function, the structure of the city of Laguardia turned out to be as follows: three longitudinal streets along which military cantons moved and a rectangular square in the center, surrounded by a powerful fortress wall.

This fortress communicated with the outside world through the city gates:

  • western La Puerta de Paganos
  • southern Mercadal
  • southeastern La Puerta de San Juan
  • northeastern Santa Engracia
  • and the eastern gate La Puerta de Carnicerías were built in the 15th century

Due to the military nature of the city, the entire population of Laguardia was divided into military-civil alliances that defended the city walls. Initially there were 4 of them and each had its own patron saint.

  • Santa Engracia; defended the area of the wall between the gate of the same name and the Porta San Juan
  • San Juan; from Gate San Juan to Mercadal
  • San Nicolas; from the Mercadal gate to Paganos
  • San Antonio; from Páganos gate to Santa Engracia

Today, in memory of those days, niches with images of saints have been preserved in the city wall. Of the original images, only San Antonio has survived, which historians date back to the 13th century.

Throughout the Middle Ages, as a result of hostilities between Navarre and Castile, Laguardia repeatedly changed its subordination until it finally came under Castile rule in 1461. And 25 years later, Laguardia and its surrounding villages were included in the province of Alava.

In the 16th century, a united Spain acquired the absolute power of the Catholic Kings. Laguardia loses its significance as a military post and ceases to be an arena of military clashes.

Peacetime gives a powerful impetus to the economic development of the city, thanks to the wine trade and noble families who move here and build palace-style houses.

The "caves" or family wineries that characterize Laguardia were built in the 16th century. Laguardia stands entirely on underground catacombs that were built by these wineries. Each house has its own dungeon, corresponding to the winery. In this case, the dimensions of the dungeon may not correspond to the dimensions of the house. So, there are huge houses with small bodegas and vice versa.

The main function of the Laguardia catacombs is to store wine. But at certain periods in history they were also used as shelters and “headquarters” for the development of military plans.

At the end of the 16th and during the 17th centuries, the city was devastated by a plague epidemic, the first mention of which dates back to 1564. It got to the point that some settlements in the surrounding area completely disappeared.

During the 18th century, Laguardia began to recover and regain its former economic level. But with the beginning of the 19th century, it was again drawn into numerous military actions. So, during the War of Independence with Napoleon's troops, in 1809, the Marquis de Barriolucio ordered the destruction of part of the city wall in order to avoid the fortress falling into the hands of the French and using it as their strategic base.

Laguardia was then embroiled in the Carlist Wars, which rocked Spain throughout much of the 19th century. And if during the first Carlist war its city wall was restored, then during the last one most of it was destroyed.

Throughout the 20th century, the city was slowly restored and today Laguardia is a city full of charm, surrounded by stunning landscapes of vineyards, and the keeper of a past history that has left its mark in stone and in the memory of people, telling of the people who lived here since ancient times, who fought and created , shaping the history of Spain.

When planning your best holiday in Spain, include a visit to Laguardia in your plans. You are guaranteed unforgettable impressions from your trip to Spain!

The first two are located in the Queens area, and getting to them is easy by any means of transport: subway, bus, taxi, car or transfer. Newark Airport is located in the neighboring city and state of New Jersey, which is separated from New York only by a river. But besides the fact that the road will not be difficult, you still need to know exactly how to act at the airport or, conversely, where in the city to look for transport to the airport.

In this article, you will learn how to get from LaGuardia Airport to New York, how much it costs, how long the trip will take, and what type of transport is preferable. How to get from LaGuardia Airport to New York

How to get from LaGuardia Airport to New York

La Guardia Airport, the oldest airport in New York, is located, like John F. Kennedy Airport, in the Queens borough, although on its northern side, right on the bay. La Guardia has 4 terminals: A, B, C and D. A free bus runs between the terminals.

Bus

Cost: $2.75
Travel time: 15 minutes to subway, 40 minutes to Manhattan
Opening hours: 24 hours a day

There are bus stops near each LaGuardia Airport terminal that can easily take you to subway stations in any part of New York, be it Queens, Brooklyn, Manhattan or another area of the city. Some buses, like the subway, run 24 hours a day, so getting to any part of New York should not be a problem.

A bus ticket costs $2.75. To do this, it is better to buy a MetroCard, which within two hours gives you the right to change for free to any other type of public transport in the city.

Route No. M60 will be especially convenient for those trying to get from LaGuardia Airport to Harlem. It goes to the stops: Astoria Boulevard (at this stop you can transfer to the train), the intersection of 125th and Lexington (here you can transfer to the subway), the intersection of 116th and Broadway (for those who immediately want to get to the center of Manhattan) and other.

Route B47 goes to the Roosevelt Avenue/Jackson Heights stop in northern Brooklyn.

Route No. Q48 will be useful for those travelers whose stay in New York begins from Long Island (the stop is called “Flushing”)

Routes No. Q70 and No. Q72 travel, like B47, to the northern part of Brooklyn, with almost the same stops and ending at Roosevelt Avenue.

Depending on the direction, the trip can take from 10 minutes (to a certain street in Queens) to 40 minutes (if you are heading to Manhattan).

There are also several specialized carrier companies (Go Airlink Shuttle, New York City Airporter Bus, Taxis, Private Car Service) that travel non-stop to Manhattan. They have a special luggage compartment, and there is also more space for passengers. The travel time on them, in comparison with a trip on public transport, is reduced by 10-15 minutes, but the price, on the contrary, increases. A ticket for such a bus can cost from 12 to 20 dollars. If you are traveling with a group, even a small one, even a taxi or transfer may be more profitable.

Taxi

Cost: from 10 dollars
Travel time: from 10 minutes
Opening hours: 24 hours a day

A taxi at LaGuardia Airport is no different from the taxi we wrote about above in the section about JFK Airport. Leave the arrivals hall of your terminal and several free cars are already waiting for you.

The prices are approximately as follows: to get to another terminal it costs 10 dollars (it’s more profitable to do it on the airport’s branded bus), to Manhattan - 30 dollars, to Brooklyn - about 30-40 dollars. Of course, it all depends on the street and its distance from the airport, but the figures given above can be taken as an example.

Taking a taxi from JFK Airport to LaGuardia Airport or back will cost you approximately $35.

A taxi, like a bus, can get stuck in traffic jams, so plan ahead. For example, although it takes about half an hour to get to Manhattan by car, nevertheless, instead of half an hour you can get there in an hour or an hour and a half. Therefore, during rush hours it may be more convenient to take a bus to the nearest metro station and transfer to the subway. True, provided that you have little luggage.

Car rent

The car rental experience is exactly the same as the Car Rental section at JFK Airport. All rental offices are located in the arrival halls of all terminals. Renting a car can be an excellent transportation solution if you are going to travel to different cities in America. If you are traveling only to New York, a personal car can, on the contrary, become a problem.

How to book a car in advance on the Internet, read the article “”, where you will find detailed instructions on booking a car using the example of a website.

Transfer from La Guardia Airport to New York

A transfer can replace a taxi for you, and will most likely cost less. Moreover, the driver of the car (which, by the way, can be selected in advance on the website) will meet you in the arrivals hall with a sign with your name. To book a transfer, make an advance payment, or simply ask for an estimate, fill out the form below. We wrote more about ordering a transfer via the Internet in the article “”.
