Festival of Science, Art and Technology Polytechnic. Festival “Polytech. Bachelor's and specialist training programs

From May 27 to 28, the Polytech festival of science, art and technology will be held in Gorky Park. We studied the festival program and selected the most interesting events.

The headliner of this year's Polytech festival is a project by Bill Vorn and Louis-Philippe Demer called "Inferno". The peculiarity of this project is that the audience becomes active participants in the performance, wearing computer-controlled exoskeletons.

The key theme of the performance is the concept of the circles of hell (translated from Italian inferno- hell, fiery Gehenna). In world culture, images of the underworld and the omnipotent forces inhabiting it are often found: it is worth at least recalling Dante’s “Divine Comedy”. These forces have power over souls and the ability to punish sinners. During the performance “Inferno”, the audience will find themselves at the mercy of these demonic forces: this is exactly the effect that exoskeletons will allow to achieve.

As part of the Polytech, the project will be demonstrated over two days of the festival, with a 15-minute show running every hour.

Comment from Inferno curator Olga Vad:

“Inferno” is a project in which the viewer is given the opportunity to live a completely unique experience. Firstly, few people have worn an exoskeleton - and this in itself is an exciting experience. Secondly, unlike classical theatre, here the so-called “fourth wall” is removed and the viewer finds himself in the center of the production. Thirdly, the atmosphere of a technogenic underworld, in which the body is controlled by an invisible force behind a pile of iron, is enhanced by lighting effects and a trance-inducing soundtrack.

It was important for the authors of the performance, Louis-Philippe Demer and Bill Vorn, to minimize the distance between a person and a mechanical structure, to create a situation in which the participant can not only think about the cyborgization of a person, but also experience it for himself. Plus, it's an incredibly impressive show, even if you're not in it.

"AEROCEN"
Aerial sculptures made from used plastic.

Aerosolar Museum (Museo Aero Solar) is a global project by Tomas Saraceno, which is updated every year with new objects, namely aerial sculptures made from used plastic. The idea for the project arose in 2007. Since then, the project has been replicated in more than 20 locations around the world. In 2017, the Polytechnic Museum will join the global community of Museo Aero Solar creators.

“Aerocene” is a ball that rises into the air without additional heating: the sun’s rays pass through the plastic shell, the air inside the ball becomes warmer, and the sculpture rises into the sky on its own. “Aerocene” is not only a reason to think about the environment, it is a project about how art can transform the most everyday things, in this case, a simple bag that you once bought in a supermarket.

At the Polytech festival, the Museo Aero Solar team will set up a large tent made of plastic bags, and everyone will be able to glue together their mini-aerocenes.

TrDRMKr
A simulator for the development of the flywheel muscles.

Mikhail Leikin

The work of the creative duo from Russia “MishMash” is a simulator that turns its user into a work of art. The installation “TrDRMK” is a symbolic monument to a man who climbs a ladder into the sky in order to first pump up his wing muscles and then overcome the force of gravity. Any festival visitor will be able to become part of the installation; to do this, you just need to use the simulator.

“TrDRMKr” is an ironic play on a person’s desire for independent flight.

The authors of the object - architect Mikhail Leikin and graduate of the Printing Institute Maria Sumnina - created the creative duo "MishMash" in 1999. Translated from English the word mishmash means “mush, confusion, confusion,” and it is this method that artists often use in their work, turning artistic projects into a kind of game.

FIND YOUR MATE AT THE FESTIVAL!

Even if someone came to the festival without company, he will not be alone for long. Upon entry, everyone will receive an anion or cation sticker. It needs to be fixed on clothing so that others can see it from the outside. Now you can enter into an ionic bond, the main thing is to find the right person in the crowd.

Those who don't remember anything from their school chemistry course shouldn't worry. Each participant will be given a reminder that will help them find a friend. From it it will be possible to find out what will happen to those who find their mate: they will turn into lime, corrode each other, or simply precipitate. In a special zone "

This coming weekend, the Polytech festival will again take place in Gorky Park. We'll tell you what the organizers promise to show this year and why interactive installations are really interesting.

Become a controlled robot

The main project of the festival is the performance Inferno by artists Louis Philippe Demer and Bill Vorn on the theme of robots and how a machine controls reality. Spectators are invited to put on a computer-controlled exoskeleton - from that moment the whole action begins. The opportunity itself is unique - according to the authors, the performance immerses participants in all the circles of hell, the underworld, which Inferno represents. Here you can find references for both Dante's Divine Comedy and the Haw Par Villa theme park in Singapore. Interactive performances at our festivals are still not the most common occurrence, so we don’t recommend missing them.

Feel your own and someone else's heart rhythm

As poetic as it may sound, in the Double Pulse installation, viewers can hear their own heartbeat, as well as the pulse of those around them. Once inside the specific installation, you become part of the overall symphony. The object analyzes the pulse for similarity, vibrates, and at night turns into a light installation - a real work of ephemeral architecture.

Feel the smells and find new love

Smells are always associated with memories and experiences - this is what members of the Berlin community The Smell Lab talk about in their work. Here, the search for a partner follows the same pattern as in Tinder, but your scent is the main guideline for the match. Speed dating is strictly on schedule, so sign up in advance - there will be only three sessions per day. The winners will move on to the next level - the Absolut lounge. There will be a whole laboratory of smells, through which you can win a date for two.

Explore the starry sky

If you combine astrophysicists and artists in one community, you get the Space Art Research Committee, a group of curators from Japan. At the nearest Polytechnic they will present the installation “Flowers Behind the Universe”, repeating the outlines of the starry sky. The committee members created it together with the Gumm Observatory, and in this case the back of the Universe is the other side of the globe - we will see the stars that shine over New Zealand.

Go to the clouds

A concrete mixer-disco ball, a portable gallery, a residential van in the sky, a telephone booth with water - Benedetto Bufalino's projects are naive and simple, which is why we love the French artist. In Moscow, he will present his installation for the first time - “The Road to the Clouds” can be seen from anywhere in Gorky Park.

On May 27 and 28, the fourth free street festival “Polytech” will be held in Gorky Park, which will combine multimedia art, modern theater, new scientific experiments, public art, discussion, educational and game programs. "Polytech" will become a giant scientific popular attraction, built on48 hours for more than50,000 spectators.

The theme of the festival will be “gravity” as a fundamental scientific concept that affects each of us. The study of this force has occupied scientists for many centuries, and overcoming it has been the dream of engineers since the time of Leonardo da Vinci. Today - in the age of drones, exoskeletons and private space exploration - we know more about this power than ever. The force of attraction is also an interaction that arises between people in addition to the laws of physics; a force that each of us has experienced at least once in our lives. This year we invited inventors and artists to think about the literal and metaphorical meaning of this concept.

The headliner of the festival will be the performance Inferno by Canadian artists, classics of technological art Bill Vorn and Louis-Philippe Demer, in which the audience is invited to take the stage themselves, wearing an exoskeleton. The movements of the participants will be completely subordinated to the movements of the robotic suits: depending on the choreography, sometimes the audience can move freely, but more often they are provoked to certain physical reactions.

Especially for the festival, artists from the experimental ephemeral architecture laboratory Plastique-Fantastique are developing a site-specific project. At night, it will be a light installation, and during the day, it will be a pavilion and an interactive sound art labyrinth, reproducing the heartbeat of visitors to the facility.

The festival program will include collective sculptures, interactive installations, performances, scientific attractions, a lecture program, as well as entertainment activities from festival partners.

Having participated in the festival project “Smell Me, Smell You”, the winners will have the opportunity to look into the special Absolut lounge area. A special smell laboratory, Absolut Sniff Dating, will operate here, where participants will be invited to experiment with scents of attraction and receive the main prize - an ideal date in the best bars in Moscow, tasting rare cocktails.

The largest object of the festival will be the Museo Aero Solar, created from plastic bags. This open-source project was launched in 2007 by artist Tomas Saraceno: at the workshop, volunteers assemble a large-scale sculpture from recycled plastic, and then launch it into the sky. Museo Aero Solar is a collective work that consists of individual actions and turns an object that pollutes the environment into an object that expands the boundaries of our consciousness.

The Polytechnic Festival of Science, Art and Technology is a large-scale popular science educational weekend of the Polytechnic Museum for adults and children. The festival will combine multimedia art, modern theater, new scientific experiments, public art, discussion, educational and game programs. "Polytech" will be a giant popular science attraction built for 48 hours for more than 50,000 adults and children.

For children

Children at the Green School project will be able to assemble and launch an airplane from foam parts, draw a picture with a pendulum, and witness how a sprout from a tiny grain overcomes the force of gravity right before their eyes.

At the scientific show of the inventor, design engineer, TV presenter, director of shows in the sciencetainment genre, head of the Physics Laboratory of the Polytechnic Museum Alexey Ivanchenko, you can see experiments dedicated to the amazing features of planet Earth. With the help of Wolfe's vessel, viewers will see how fogs are born, and a model of the geoid will demonstrate that the Earth is in fact not a perfect sphere. In 60 minutes you can learn why you can’t touch deep-sea fish and how a cat adapts to gravity, understand how dangerous atmospheric pressure can be and how harmless fire is.

The crane, invented by Alexey Ivanchenko for the Galileo program and improved specifically for the Polytech festival, will demonstrate the capabilities of centrifugal force - the same one that spins out laundry in the machine and does not allow water to spill out of a rotating bucket. A small motor, not capable of much on its own, spins a system constructed from four metal rods, two balls and a chair. The balls, rotating in a circle with a diameter of up to 3 meters, lift the load. And the most amazing thing: the load will remain in the air even when the engine is turned off! At the festival, the load will be one of the visitors, who will be chosen for this important role by the host of the show.

And in a large flat aquarium, slowly alternating red and blue rings will appear. This beautiful reaction, discovered in the 40s by the Russian chemist Boris Pavlovich Belousov, is often called the chemical heart. From a scientific point of view, this is one of many types of catalysis. Several such experiments, including a continuously beating “chemical heart,” will be demonstrated by the head of the Laboratory of Chemistry Denis Zhilin.

For biology lovers, there will be a multimedia project by Ilya Kolmanovsky, which will demonstrate phenomena invisible to the eye. For this purpose, the method of slow-motion (slow-motion) and accelerated (time-lapse) shooting will be used. Guests will be able to see in detail how drops fly from the girl’s hair, how the malamute and the rat shake themselves off. In addition, we will attach a video camera and a GPS tracker to the pigeon and watch in real time how the bird flies from VDNH to its dovecote on Taganka.

For all

The headliner of the festival will be performance Inferno Canadian artists, classics of technological art Bill Vorn and Louis-Philippe Demer, in which the audience is invited to take the stage themselves, wearing an exoskeleton.

Especially for the festival, artists from the experimental ephemeral architecture laboratory Plastique-Fantastique are developing a site-specific project. At night it will be a light installation, and during the day it will be a pavilion and an interactive sound art labyrinth. The pneumatic sculpture will be created jointly with Moscow young artists and architects, and the sound art part will be the responsibility of Marco Barotti, another festival participant, the author of the sound art installation “Swans”, which will be located in the Pionersky Pond of Gorky Park.

The largest object of the festival will be the Museo Aero Solar, created from plastic bags. This open-source project was launched in 2007 by artist Tomas Saraceno: during his workshop, volunteers assemble a large-scale sculpture from recycled plastic, and then launch it into the sky. AYuri Suzuki - artist, engineer, inventor of the OTOTO board, whose works are stored in the collections of MoMa and Tate, will present the “Impossible Machine” object, created under the direction of the artist together with students of the Polytechnic University; every hour, festival visitors will have the opportunity to see a chain reaction show.

In 2017, the Polytech festival will offer a special lecture program. It will include scientists and international experts in the field of new technologies, as well as artists participating in the festival.

The film speaker of the festival will be Ivan Pupyrev, project manager in the field of interactive technologies of the future Technical Program Lead at Google’s Advanced Technology, an inventor and designer working at the intersection of interactive design and technology.
