From Cyprus

There is a regular ferry service from Limassol to Lavrion (40 km from Athens).

You can also use the cruises offered by Salamis Lines or car ferries from Athens to Larnaca (they have several cabins for passengers), but the cost of such a trip is much higher than the cost of air travel.

From Turkey

There is a regular connection between the Turkish resort towns and the islands of Greece:

  • Marmaris - Rhodes (40USD one way),
  • Bodrum - Rhodes,
  • Fethiye - Rhodes,
  • Cesme - Chios (35USD one way),
  • Kusadasi - Samos,
  • Ayvalik - Lesvos.

According to agreements between Greece and Turkey, 2 voyages are carried out in each direction - respectively, on a Greek and Turkish ship. For example, on the island of Lesvos, tickets for the morning Greek ferry to Turkey are sold, but it is not possible to buy tickets for a Turkish ship leaving in the afternoon. The cost of tickets is relatively high, which can be explained solely by the tourist orientation of these lines. Small discounts are available when buying tickets in both directions.

From Israel

The situation with ferries to Israel is constantly changing. In 2010, the service was restored again, however, we are talking about cruise ships following the route Athens - Limassol - Haifa / Ashdod - Port Said (Egypt) - Limassol. Cyprus-based company Salamis Lines began selling tickets for these cruises, including those who travel between Israel and Greece one way. The cost of the voyage is quite high - 250 euros one way, which is 1.5 times more expensive than a flight between these countries. Tickets are sold by Cypriot companies Salamis Lines, Varianos Travel and Israel's Rosenfeld Shipping.

By car

How many kilometers from Moscow to Athens? Below are some guidelines for distances from Athens by road:

  • from Moscow - 3180 km,
  • from Sofia - 820 km,
  • from Bucharest - 1220 km,
  • from Istanbul - 1135 km.

By bus

Arda Tur buses leave daily for Thessaloniki from the capital of Bulgaria - Sofia: at 10.00, 12.30, 17.00, 23.30 (the schedule is subject to change and must be clarified in advance!). Travel time is about 6 hours.

By train

Attention, at the end of 2011, international rail links with Greece were suspended indefinitely due to debts of Greek railroad workers. In this regard, all trains that previously traveled to Greece from Bulgaria, Macedonia and Turkey (and, accordingly, in the opposite direction) were canceled.

At the moment, the Greek government plans to resume the railway connection on the Thessaloniki-Belgrade route. However, information on the timing of the resumption of traffic is contradictory. So, it was meaningfully planned to launch this train only in the summer period (from June 06 to September 28), later it was reported that it would run all year round, starting from April 25, 2014. In any case, when planning a trip to Greece, one should give preference by plane, ferry or bus.

This year, Greece is one of the most desirable countries for tourists from all over the world. Russian tourists are no exception. More and more often, residents of our country decide to go on a family vacation, treatment, or for a wedding ceremony, honeymoon.

Every year in the summer, the Moscow-Athens train was launched, which connected the capitals of two unique states.

On the territory of Greece, the duration of the holiday season is about 5 months, so even at the end of October, everyone can escape from rainy Moscow to warm and picturesque Greek cities, which will give inspiration and help to extend the summer. It doesn't matter if you decide to go on a beach vacation or go for a new fur coat. This trip will be unforgettable and will be remembered for many years!

Unfortunately, not all travelers are ready to travel to Greece by plane due to the fear of flying. It was for such tourists that it was decided to create a direct train from Moscow to Greece during the summer season.

A huge number of people enjoy watching picturesque landscapes and life scenes, enjoying urban views, which will allow them to feel the spirit of amazing settlements and countries. This journey will help you get closer to people who live in different cities and states. After all, it is for this that people decide to go on trips!

Moscow Athens train schedule

Unfortunately, the direct train Moscow - Athens will not be launched this year. However, every tourist will be able to enjoy the beautiful landscapes of Greece in 2016 while traveling by train and bus. To do this, it is enough to buy a ticket not for the Moscow - Sofia train, which departs from the Kievsky railway station of the Russian capital. In 51 hours it will be possible to reach Sofia, during the trip tourists will be able to see such beautiful cities as Bryansk, Kiev, Lvov, Vadul-Siret, Bucharest, Pleven.

When crossing the border with Europe, the train will need to change wheel bogies, which is due to the different railway gauge in the EU and CIS countries. For this procedure, the cars are lifted together with the passengers, after which the wheels will be changed. The manipulation takes about 2 hours, during which the border guards collect passports and declarations from passengers and ask the necessary questions.

The route of the train Moscow Athens

European trains are equipped not only with compartment cars, SV, but also RIC, which exist in several versions.

Luxury carriages

This car has only 4 compartments for two passengers, which have an increased area and a salon bar. Such a compartment was equipped with a shower, a dry closet, a sofa, an armchair and an upper shelf, the size of which is 90 cm, is located here. The compartment has air conditioning and a TV.

First class wagons

In each such carriage, 10 compartments for two people were created, while a common shower and toilet room were created. The compartment is quite narrow; it contains an armchair, a washbasin and a table.

Second class wagons

Each carriage has 11 compartments for three people, which are quite cramped. The fact is that all the sleeping places are located on one side, on the other they placed: a hanger, a ladder, a washbasin. As a result, during the day, all passengers will have to either sit or lie down.

It is worth noting that when traveling with a family in a second class carriage, you can avoid troubles, but traveling with strangers can be a real hell.

In Sofia, you will have to change to a bus that can comfortably deliver to the capital of Greece. This bus leaves at 7 am from Sofia, while at half-past twelve the bus will arrive in Thessaloniki, after which at 19.50 you can enjoy picturesque Athens.

Many tourists would like to enjoy the Moscow-Athens train journey, but today no direct train has been created. But there are many other interesting options for traveling to Greece!

A few years ago, it was daunting to get the current train schedule in Greece outside its borders: for some reason, the Greeks, having printouts of the timetable in tourist offices, did not post them on the Internet at point-blank range. Now times have changed, and you can finally find out all the details online. True, there are still some nuances that are better dealt with separately.

So, in 2012, the Greek rail operator OSE successfully launched ticket sales through its updated website. At the same time, it became possible to view the train schedule. Grekoblog wrote a detailed article on how to use the site using an example.

With this route, everything is simple and there should be no problems. But they can arise if you deviate from the well-trodden roads and want to try Greek railways in the hinterland.

Therefore, we decided to dig a little deeper in order to place more dots above the “i” and help to understand those situations when the decision does not lie on the surface.

The railway network in Hellas is rather small

Peculiarities of travel planning from Athens

As we wrote earlier, Greece's rail network is rather small, but developed. There are three types of trains on the routes: regular (E), regular intercity trains (Intercity - IC) and high-speed intercity trains (Intercity Express - ICE).

Two main branches leave Athens: to northern Greece and to the South (Peloponnese). Almost all routes from the capital can be found on the TRAINOSE website.

Tickets are sold at train station ticket offices, travel agencies and through a network of agents. You can also purchase them online or make a reservation by phone.

If you are going to actively use trains on your journey, it may be more profitable to purchase. The latter differ in the number of days during which you can make a voyage, as well as depending on the age of passengers: youth (under 26) and adults (over 26).

In case of problems with tickets or reservations, you can try to solve them through the main information center of OSE in Athens at Karolou, 1. The local telephone number for English-speaking information is 1110.

The metro station where the station is located is also called Larisa

Communication with Northern Greece

Trains to Northern Greece leave from the capital at the station of Larissa (Stathmos Larissis). The easiest way to get there. The metro station, where the station is located, is also called. You can also get to the railway station from Athens International Airport by suburban train Proastiakos - we will talk about it in more detail below.

All "northern" trains go to Thessaloniki with stops at Thebes and Larissa (the city of the same name). From Thessaloniki you can get to other Greek cities in the north or to the neighboring Balkan countries.

Information telephones in the direction: 210 529 8837 or 210 823 7741.

Station Proastiakos

Communication with South Greece

To travel by rail from Athens to the southern mainland of the country, you need to use the Proastiakos, a commuter train.

Regular trains leave from Athens International Airport, Larissa and Piraeus stations, and go to Korinthos and Kiato in the Peloponnese. In Corinth, you can change trains to other cities in the Peloponnese.

Schedule of Proastiakos commuter trains in printed version.

Alternative timetable by entering the starting and ending points of the route. Please note that when planning your trip from the Greek capital, to get an accurate timetable you should enter exactly the name of the starting station, not just Athens.

So, if your trip starts at the airport, the system should indicate Athens International Airport; if in Piraeus it is Piraeus. Choose Athens when your journey starts from Larissa railway station in Athens.

Help desk phone: 210 527 2000

At Athens Airport, Metro and Proastiakos trains leave from the same station

International trains

Prior to the 2010 crisis, Greece maintained active rail links with other Balkan countries and Turkey. Then, in order to save money, these international routes were temporarily suspended. Since May 2014, some of them have been renewed again. So, now (as of spring 2015) daily trains leave from Thessaloniki to Sofia and Belgrade (via Skopje).

Moscow is almost 2 thousand kilometers away from Athens, and 2500 kilometers between St. Petersburg and Athens. Therefore, for Russian citizens, as well as citizens of the CIS countries, the most correct choice is air travel. There are direct flights between many of the major Russian airports and ports in Greece. The flight lasts from three and a half to four and a half hours, depending on the ports of departure and destination. The flight from Moscow to Athens takes a little over three hours, from St. Petersburg - more than four hours.

A trip by rail, car or bus from Russia will take at least three days, so this option is suitable if you are planning to travel all over Europe and look, among other things, in Greece. Airfare to Greece from Russia depends on the season, with the highest prices from June to early September (and Easter week). However, in the periods - April-May and from the end of September to October, prices decrease, dropping the lowest from November to March (with the understandable exception of Christmas and New Year, when prices are like in high season). Please note that if you are flying on weekends, you will have to pay extra.

You can reduce costs by contacting some specialized agent or discounter (an agent who makes money on the love of the clientele for discounts): they not only find discount air tickets for their clients on “last minute” flights, but sometimes they also offer benefits for students or youth, as well as a number of related services - to sell together with a ticket, a train ticket, a car rental agreement, a ticket for and so on. There are also companies that buy large quantities of tickets in bulk and then sell them at a discount. Sometimes it is more profitable to buy a package of services - this is a complex voucher that covers not only air travel, but also accommodation in the host country and other services.

Even if you never buy a ticket for your flight over the Internet, surfing the web itself is worthwhile: you will at least find out where and who has the best deals. But companies usually put on the site a very meager set of fixed prices for tickets that cannot be returned or changed, on the one hand, and prices of a very economy class, on the other, so if you want to expand your choice, then you need to call the company's office or Look for advice on one of the websites that offer discounts and other travel perks.

The cheapest options are associated with all sorts of restrictions: flight on the night from Saturday to Sunday, say, or a mandatory stop for three days, or the ticket is valid only for a month or two. Moreover, for violating the conditions for receiving any discounts and more or less seductive benefits, they immediately scare you with terrible punishments for any violation: you may even lose the full ticket price if you are late for departure or change the return date. Sometimes discounts are offered for people under the age of 26.

  • Airport in Athens

Getting lost in the huge Athens airport or missing your flight, especially when changing from one plane to another, is very easy. Airport regulations require that the interval between your arrival in Athens and your departure from Athens on another plane must be at least 55 minutes, however some airlines require an interval of 90 minutes. Bearing in mind the usual, especially for the Olympic, delays and protracted - safety! - checks, try to adhere to this rule when buying tickets.

Some - but (alas) not all - automatic ticketing systems will not satisfy your request if the interval between flights does not fit the above limits. Drop off your luggage for check-in and check-in for the entire route, up to the last destination. Even if an international flight departing from your home country is monstrously late, you still have a good chance of completing your chosen route on the same day if you follow this rule, although your checked baggage may be a day late.

Although Athens remains the main destination of low-cost flights, there are direct flights from Moscow to and to, as well as to the islands of Crete, Kos, Kerkyra, Zakynthos, Skiathos, (Thira), Lesbos, etc. And having arrived on a plane of any company to Athens, you can buy a ticket for any domestic flight - the planes of the Greek companies Olympic Airways and Aegean Airlines fly to more than three dozen ports on the mainland and on the islands. The charter season runs from early May to late October. During the high season, you may find that companies are rarely or reluctant to make deals involving only the purchase of an air ticket.

A direct flight to the island of your choice can be more expensive, so it is recommended that you take into account that many places can be reached significantly cheaper if you take a flight via Athens. Domestic flights from Athens can be booked on the Aegean Airways website. The cost of round-trip tickets in the high season starts from reasonable prices for a flight from Moscow to Rhodes, or Kerkyra, and reaches the average prices for a trip to or Kefalionia. The usual prices for air travel in both directions between Russia and Athens depend on the season, for example, in winter it is cheaper, and when flying in August or on Easter, the cost of air travel will double. Prices go up during the high season.

If the price is most important to you, then at the height of the tourist season, there is no choice but to get to with transfers, through some suitable European cities. Each airline has many fares according to which it carries passengers. Some of them you may not even be aware of because they are confidential. You may have your hair standing on end from other officially recommended airlines by international associations, because the price of an air ticket issued at this fare can be very high. But we will only talk about the most popular of them. Fares that do not impose any restrictions on the carriage of passengers are usually called normal.

They are divided into the following categories: First (F) - for an air ticket to first class, Business (C) - to business class, Full (annual) - economic. Tickets issued for these fares are usually subject to free change of dates and itinerary, and have no time limits. If you wish to return such a ticket, only the cost of the form will be deducted from you. For an unused return ticket, half of its cost will be refunded minus the communication fee. In addition, passengers with such tickets can carry more baggage free of charge: 40 kilograms in first class and 30 in business class. The excursion rate is not particularly different from normal rates. But there is one limitation: usually this is a certain minimum and maximum stay at your destination.

A ticket issued at this rate is almost always subject to full refund, and allows you to change the dates and route of transportation. However, to change the date, you must contact the airline no later than 72 hours before departure. However, most passengers do not want to fly in Business Class. Therefore, the most extensive category of tariffs we use is called special tariffs. Each company itself determines how much it will take tourists on vacation for. All special fares have a number of general rules: you cannot redeem a one-way ticket, after departure, if you are late or change your mind, the ticket cannot be returned, a return before departure is also impossible or is subject to a huge penalty.

All rates have a minimum and maximum stay at the destination. Another characteristic feature of this group of fares is the impossibility of booking it: the rules state that payment for the ticket must be made no later than 24-72 hours after booking. The logic of the airline is quite obvious here - the lower the tariff, the stricter the conditions for its application. So, for example, you can buy an inexpensive ticket issued at a youth fare, most often only three to seven days before departure. The fare, of course, is also limited by the age of the passenger - from 12 to 25 years. If you bought a ticket with a fixed return date, it will not be returned, even if you try to return it 10 minutes after purchase. Roughly the same conditions when buying a ticket at the age fare.

It provides a discount for people over 60: 25 percent off the price of a full annual economy class ticket. And a prerequisite for buying a ticket at a group fare is a voucher proving that you are abroad. Moreover, such a voucher must be at the same time for 6-10 passengers. The most affordable tickets for regular flights can be purchased at the Apex fare. An even cheaper version is called Super Apex. Both tariffs have a lot of restrictions. You can only fly at this rate in the economy class cabin. In addition, a strict "Deadline", that is, the deadline for buying a ticket, appears as a strict tariff condition.

Most often, you need to purchase such a ticket 21 days, 14 days, 7, 3 days before departure and, conversely, not earlier than 7 days, not earlier than 3 days. Another serious limitation is the so-called "Blackout days", the days on which this tariff cannot be used. According to the rules of some airlines, a ticket purchased at the Super Apex fare obliges the passenger to stay in the country of destination for a certain time. For example, the tariff conditions of the Aeroflot airline stipulate that a passenger must stay in the country from 7 to 14 days. Recently, special offers and promotional rates have become noticeable. This is how airlines try to fill unloaded flights in the off-season or attract passengers to new flights.

Perhaps the biggest disadvantage of these programs is their unpredictability, so you definitely shouldn't plan a trip relying on such a rate. So, if you want to save some money on regular flights, you need to follow fairly simple guidelines. The most important of them sounds simple: you need to buy a ticket in both directions at once, it will always cost you 30-50% cheaper. Generally, all confidential, special and promotional fares are valid only when you buy a roundtrip ticket. There is no need to look for any special background here, this is exclusively a marketing ploy of your air carrier: the company forces you to use its services when you return home.

If you need your itinerary to go through more than two cities, try to organize your trip so that the flight is as close to a straight line as possible. The air ticket price is calculated in terms of miles, and the straighter the route, the more acceptable it will be. There is such a tricky thing in air travel rates as the "Sunday rule". When planning your trip, try to include at least one Saturday to Sunday night in your stay. Compliance with the "Sunday rule" will enable you to enjoy various discounts.

  • Packages and tours to Greece

Almost any tour operator certainly includes Greece in their programs, although, as a rule, you find that only famous resorts are offered to you to choose from - these are the islands of Rhodes, Kos, Skiathos, Zakynthos, Kerkyra and, on the mainland, Tolo, the Messinia region and peninsula of Halkidiki. By purchasing one of these "last minute" vouchers, especially in spring or autumn, you may find that it costs a little more than a plane ticket, and staying in an expensive hotel or a modest refuge is at your discretion. However, if you want to get to a less touristy and "more Greek" resort, it is better to purchase a ticket from some specialized agency.

There are also such offers to clients as trips to the islands and to those corners that are not too crowded with tourists. By and large, we can say that these agencies are divided into two categories: some, like large chains, offer a contract for the entire season, including accommodation in a hotel and air travel (sometimes your own plane). Others organize individual tours, include in the contract all the troubles with transport and settlement at the place of rest. Services of the second category are sometimes more expensive, but flights and accommodation, as a rule, are correspondingly much higher quality.

  • Traveling to Greece by train

A train journey from Moscow to Greece takes from two and a half to three and a half days and can be more expensive than air travel. This trip is also difficult to plan because there are no direct trains and the ticket has to be bought from different operators. However, you can get the opportunity to make stops on the way, for this you need to purchase an Interrail card (only for EU citizens) or Eurail (for residents of other countries), covering the entire network of European railways, including Greece.

These cards are not valid on Russian railways, they can only be issued for travel abroad. Usually they travel from the UK via France and to Bari or Brindisi, from which there are ferries to. The alternative is a longer way overland via and. Book your seats in advance (especially in summer) and the cheapest tickets will cost you several hundred euros, of course not including travel expenses. You can use more expensive cards that provide more options.

Reims - -, and from Milan along the Adriatic coast, get to one of the four ports with ferry terminals.

However, even if you manage to get on the most high-speed freeways, you are unlikely to be able to drive all the way without at least two overnight stops. Most ferries leaving Italy call at (Kerkyra), where you can stay for a while - you just need to make a note on the ticket about your intention. Ferry services are generally all year round, but from December to April the number of flights and services is reduced. The road from any Italian port to Patras costs the same as the road to or Corfu. The cheapest route is from Brindisi to Igoumenitsa, but there is no ferry going further to the port of Patras.

In addition, drivers have already figured out that the extra fuel costs and tolls for using Italian motorways eat up all the savings on cheap ferry tickets departing from the pier in Brindisi or Bari, so if you take the more expensive tickets for ferries leaving from Ancona or, then you will not lose anything in money. The duty is charged on all international ferries - about 10 € per person, as well as for each car or motorcycle, usually (but not always) they are included in the ticket price. For those who are not EU citizens, the tax is 19 € per person and is sometimes charged twice - at boarding and at the exit.

  • Ferries Italy-Greece

If you want to sail from Italy to Greece you have to choose one of five ports. Regular ferries that take passengers and cars on board connect Ancona, Bari and Brindisi with Igoumenitsa (main port) and / or Patras (at the northwest end). All these flights operate all year round, but less frequently from December to April. Ferries run less regularly from Venice and Trieste to Patras via Igoumenitsa or Corfu. Tickets for longer routes are more expensive, but the difference in price just coincides with the cost of travel to Brindisi. Almost all flights have the option to stop at Kerkyra.

To get to or at Athens as quickly as possible, head to Patras, from where you can reach across the country. In summer (especially in July-August), tickets must be booked several weeks in advance. In winter, you can simply set a course for the main ports (Brindisi and Ancona, perhaps more reliable than the rest). However, booking your seats in advance, at least a few days in advance, will not hurt, especially if you are in a car or want a separate cabin.
