FOOD TIPS

A lot can be said about the cuisine of Montenegro. On the one hand, it is not pretentious, on the other hand, they cook so deliciously here and they do not spare food so much that you can hardly beat a portion. And half a portion is a lot. They love pork, beef, and lamb; there are many fish dishes on the menu of any restaurant, although fish is expensive here for a country with access to the sea. Spices are not spared. Vegetable and fruit salads are held in high esteem. Montenegrin culinary has been influenced by Italian cuisine, adapting to local traditions and customs. Interestingly dried meat (prosciutto), which gives the original taste of local pizza. We recommend trying national dishes: hanger (chop stuffed with spices), chevapchichi (minced meat sausages, fried on a rostila), kaymak - salted sheep's curd. And of course the local wine - Vranac! Drink it with taste, drink it to your health! Drink a lot! Other than enjoyment, no consequences!

Tipping is usually given in restaurants, usually 5-10% of the bill (rachun).

  • One of the characteristic features of the national character of the Montenegrins is "slowness". Do not be offended if the hotel staff or the waiter does not run to fulfill your wish at that hour - according to the beliefs of the inhabitants of Montenegro, vanity is extremely harmful to health.
  • Montenegro is an Orthodox country with a large number of active churches and monasteries included in the excursion programs. When visiting places of worship, one should not wear excessively revealing or transparent clothing, which is especially true for women.
  • Although the inhabitants of Montenegro are extremely tolerant, it is considered bad form for them to raise topics related to the collapse of the former Yugoslavia and the subsequent conflicts.
  • Smoking always and everywhere is a kind of "feature" of the national Montenegrin character. Local residents perceive this bad habit so naturally that they smoke in public places without hesitation (although in 2004 a law was passed prohibiting it) and even in the presence of children. On the contrary, it is considered bad form to take offense at smokers and is highly discouraged. It is easier for non-smokers to step aside in such cases.
  • Do not be surprised if an unordered glass of wine or liqueur appears on your table at lunch in a local tavern. This is a traditional manifestation of the famous Montenegrin hospitality - a drink at the expense of the institution or "on a rachun heap".
  • Almost everything is allowed to take pictures in Montenegro, except for strategically important objects, which have a special sign - a crossed-out camera.
  • The main advice for those who travel to Montenegro with children is to choose the right hotel or cottage. It should be located close to the beach, as in mountainous Montenegro even short distances can be a problem for the baby. It is desirable for a cottage to have its own kitchen where you can cook. It will not hurt the proximity to the local market, where you can always buy the freshest meat, dairy products, vegetables and fruits to your table.
  • Those who rented a car in Montenegro should remember that there are practically no free parking lots in small towns of this Balkan country. Paid parking lots in Montenegro are divided into equipped (automatic-barrier) and not equipped. The second type of parking is paid using a ticket purchased in advance (0.7 € from a newsstand) and filled in (the exact time and date of parking is set), which is inserted under the glass from the inside. Do not violate local parking laws - the consequences can be extremely unpleasant for your nerves and wallet.

Sockets in Montenegro(220V)

The small state is located on the Balkan Peninsula, on the Adriatic Sea coast. It neighbors Serbia, Croatia, Bosnia and Herzegovina, Albania, and Kosovo.

Today, many of our compatriots are planning to spend their holidays in this. And of course, they are interested in whether they are needed. We hope that our answer will please many: for a short-term trip, a visa is not required. It is necessary to issue it only if you plan to stay in the country for more than three months.

In this article we will tell you everything about Montenegro. For tourists, its nature is important, as well as the features of rest, we will introduce you to the advice of experienced travelers.

Climate

Since Montenegro is located on the Adriatic coast, the country's climate is Mediterranean, only in its northern regions it is moderately continental. In the summer months, the average air temperature is quite comfortable for rest (+ 23- + 25 ° C). In winter, the thermometer rarely drops below -7 ° C.

Experienced tourists believe that the best time to relax in this country is mid to late summer. The weather in Montenegro in August is hot and sunny. For example, in Podgorica, where tourists usually visit at least for a day, the average temperature is + 32 ° C, at night it drops significantly to + 19 ° C. In the resort towns of Tivat, Budva and Kotor, during the day, about +30.3 ° C, and at night, on average, no higher than +17 ° C.

The water temperature in August is + 26 ° C. The weather in Montenegro in August varies depending on the resort you choose. For example, in the very popular city of Bar, during the day the air does not warm up above +25.8 ° C, and at night it does not drop below +21.6 ° C. And the water temperature in Montenegro near Bar practically does not differ from other resorts.

Montenegro is famous for its clean air with a high content of essential oils, ions, clean water of the Adriatic Sea, which contains 38 milligrams of salt per 1 gram of water, healing sand on well-equipped beaches. Thousands of tourists from all over the world come to this country every year to treat a number of serious diseases: respiratory tract, infertility, vascular and heart diseases.

Sea

On many beaches, the transparency of the water reaches 60 meters. It has an unusual azure blue color. This is due to the large amount of minerals and salts dissolved in it. The average water temperature in Montenegro in the summer months is + 26 ° C. Sometimes cold currents bring cold water to the beaches from the depths of the sea, and then you have to wait two days until it warms up well.

Where to go in Montenegro?

Several popular resorts are located on the coast of the country. One of the most famous of them is Budva... This city has amazing beaches. Mogren and Slavyansky are especially good. In addition, the resort is distinguished by its magnificent nature. Tourists consider high prices for food and souvenirs among the disadvantages of Budva.

Rafilovici, Becici, St. Stephen's Island also cannot be called cheap resorts. But here are the same well-groomed beaches and very nice Mediterranean architecture.

Petrovac is a popular resort in Montenegro with a huge and comfortable beach, as well as a small pier for small ships and boats.

Sutomore is a resort that will interest those who are thinking about where to go in Montenegro at the lowest cost. Sutomore is perhaps the cheapest resort. Local residents joke: "Tourists with money go to the sea, and without them - in Sutomore." As a rule, there are not many tourists here.

It is difficult to know everything about Montenegro before traveling. For tourists who want to make good purchases and have a good rest, you should go to Bar - the business capital of the country. There are quite low prices for goods from Italy and other European countries, since the city is the only major port in the country. In addition, there are many interesting sights here. The beaches are mostly pebbly. There are significantly fewer tourists in Bar than in Kotor or Budva.

Ultsin is a resort located on the border with Albania. The town is famous for its magnificent sandy beaches and lots of sunny days.

Bays of Montenegro

There are other popular resorts in the country, and travelers should know about them if they are interested in everything about Montenegro. All information about the country is important for tourists, and therefore, it will probably be interesting for them to know that almost half of the best resorts in the country are located not on the coast, but in the depths of huge bays. There is a slightly different sea here, which differs from the coast.

Kotorsky is the largest bay in Montenegro. It is sometimes mistakenly called the southern fjord of Europe. For the convenience of tourists, many guides subdivide it into Herceg-Novinsky and Boko-Kotorsky. We will not break traditions and will tell you about each of them separately.

Herceg Novinsky Bay

It is adjacent to the sea. Its main feature can be considered wide open spaces, when the opposite bank can hardly be distinguished. The water here is slightly warmer than on the coast, but the same crystal clear. There are not many sandy beaches, mostly pebble and concrete. Particularly popular is the Zanitsa beach, which until recently was a closed beach for the President of the country, and is now available for everyone to visit.

Boko-Kotor Bay

It is connected by a small isthmus with the Herceg-Novinsky Bay. The village of Lepetany is located nearby. Its name, translated into Russian, means "city of beauties". From the resorts, it is necessary to highlight the cities of Kotor and Perast.

Fans of sightseeing tours can visit the Church of the Mother of God. If you are planning a trip to the Bay of Kotor, it will be useful for you to know that it is much hotter here than on the coast.

Youth rest

If you are going to relax in the company of cheerful friends and girlfriends, then the question will surely arise before you: "Where is it better for young people to rest in Montenegro?" As a rule, in this case the resort of Budva is recommended. And this is no coincidence. It is the noisiest and most active city, where nightclubs are found at every step. It hosts numerous sports, music and theater festivals. In addition to a fairly busy nightlife, Budva offers guests a rich excursion program, so no one will be bored here.

Vacation with children

Families with children are frequent guests of Montenegro. This category of vacationers should be aware that it warms up to the most comfortable temperatures only by August. Noisy cities are not suitable for families with children. In addition, it is imperative to consider how convenient it is to enter the water, what is the bottom on the beach.

For a family vacation in Montenegro, the town of Petrovac is most suitable. Here, sweets are sold at every step, and in hotels the rest of the little guests is thought out to the smallest detail. You can go with children to Kotor and stay at the Hotel Monte Cristo, which is family-oriented.

Babysitting services are available here, and all the staff are Russian-speaking. And now we will present you the best beaches in Montenegro for families with children.

Small beach Ulcinj

The first on our list will be the urban and very clean Ulcinj beach. It has a gentle entrance to the sea, which seems to have been created especially for families with children. The depth increases gradually. The beach is covered with the typical brown basalt sand, which is considered to be healing.

If for some reason you don't like this beach (for example, due to the proximity of the port), go to Tropicana beach, which is located two kilometers from Ulcinj. It is equipped with water attractions, and there is also an amusement park for kids.

Sutomore beach

Almost the entire surface of this beach is covered with golden sand with small pebbles. It stretches for 1.5 km. From the side of the city it is bordered by an embankment with a complex of resort entertainment.

Probably, we have told you almost everything about Montenegro. For tourists, of course, absolutely all information is important, and therefore, it seems to us, they will still be interested in the answers to several questions. The advice of experienced travelers will help us with this. The first and, perhaps, the most pressing question, which concerns all tourists without exception, both well-to-do and somewhat limited in their means: "How much money do you need in Montenegro?"

In Montenegro, the most common is the euro. Therefore, it is more profitable to take this particular currency with you. To feel comfortable, you need to have 75 euros per day per adult. You can live on 50 (including excursions and shopping), but in this case you will have to save a little. If you have 100 euros per day, you can hardly limit yourself.

If you are planning an inexpensive vacation, but do not want to give up several excursions and want to buy souvenirs, then you will need 400 euros per person for a week. With this money, you will feel quite confident, although you will not be able to roam especially.

Of course, it all depends on your preference. By the most conservative estimates, in order to eat exclusively in restaurants and cafes and not limit yourself too much, you will need:

  • for 7 days - from 600 euros;
  • for 10 days - from 800 euros;
  • for 14 days - from 1100 euros.

What to take with you to Montenegro?

For tourists going on vacation to this country for the first time, this issue is very relevant. The answer to it depends on many factors: your wealth, the choice of the resort, the time of visiting the country. Many vacationers, going to the resorts of Montenegro after the jump in food prices in 2014, began to take non-perishable food with them. They explain this by the fact that this allows them to save on food, directing funds to additional excursions.

When going to the beach, take water with you, as it is more expensive on the coast, hats, towels and money: the crime rate is very low here, so you don't have to worry about their safety.

Every new tourist is interested in whether there is a visa to Montenegro, whether the country is safe, expensive or cheap vacation here, whether the prices in supermarkets differ from yours, whether they understand English and Russian. BUT! To get started, study the peculiarities of the country, the mentality of people, gastronomic preferences, climatic conditions and local traditions. If Montenegro did not meet your expectations, then you were not information-savvy 😉

Visa to Montenegro in 2018

For residents of Russia, Ukraine and Azerbaijan a visa is not required to Montenegro. That is, from the documents you only need a valid passport! Ukrainians have the right to enter for 90 days, then they need to leave the country for 90 days. It is impossible to give them a loan every month, but you can live for 3 months in a row ... Russians have the right to have a rest without a break for 90 days only during the tourist season. In 2018, it is introduced for the period from April 15 to October 31, that is, you can rest no more than 3 months during this period, you do not need to go to the visaran! If you want to live in Montenegro for half a year or a year, then put a seal every 30 days at any border on the exit-entry, register at the tourist office and live in pleasure! This right is given only to holders of Russian passports!

Citizens of Belarus they can fly to Montenegro without a visa, but with a voucher (from a travel agency) or by invitation from an officially certified private person. Also, Belarusians can enter the territory of Montenegro with a valid Schengen, US or UK visa.

Citizens of Kazakhstan get visa-free entry to Montenegro only for the season, in 2018 they announced the cancellation of the visa from April 1.

Registration of tourists in Montenegro (white cardboard)

Every foreign citizen must be registered at the tourist information point or electronically (done in hotels). A tourist in Montenegro needs to pay a boravish tax, this is a tax for accommodation - 1 euro per day, free of charge - children under 12 years old and disabled, teenagers from 12 to 18 years old - 50%. Previously, they issued white cardboard with the dates of arrival and departure, and paid at the Post Office. Now everything is done electronically, the owner of the villa or at the reception must do it at 24 hours upon arrival.

If you rent an apartment without travel agencies and the owners are not going to pay tax, ask them for their full name and address, go to the travel point yourself on the first day. If you are the owner of your own home in Montenegro, you and your family members do not pay travel tax, but you are also required to register at the border crossing. On the map in your city look like this - Turistički informativni centar

What is the risk of non-payment of the tour. tax? At airports, it is rare for someone to check this information in a computer, but there have been cases of a fine of 200 euros and lengthy proceedings ... Most often, questions arise from border guards at automobile borders, especially in front of Bosnia (Trebinje), where Russians go to visit. Border guards there, lured with money, behave like a greyhound, they will definitely check your data in the base for paying the boravish tax. If not, the fine is from 60 to 200 euros.

How to protect yourself from a fine while traveling in the Balkans? Be sure to check at the hotel reception or in correspondence with the owners of the apartments whether you have made a registration, tell them about your upcoming trip to Bosnia, Albania, Serbia, Croatia. Often in hotels they give a check for payment, or take a picture of it on your phone. If you pay the travel tax yourself - save the payment in your wallet. This check will also save you if the data was entered incorrectly in the computer database. (extra space, wrong letter - I personally have this happened).

If you change the city of your overnight stay every day, you are afraid that someone will not register you, take the address and full name in the first apartment and go to TURINfo yourself, saying the date of arrival and departure, pay tax for the entire period of stay in the first location.

Travel insurance for Montenegro?

If you are not going to rent a car, experience extreme sports and worry about the health of your children - I advise you to take care of insurance, you can buy online at, tourists say that it shows itself perfectly Alpha insurance - Solves your insurance questions in 15 minutes, even in the Kotor hospital.

Such a common disease in July-August as rotavirus "mows" almost everyone - from small to large on the city's crowded beaches. And appendicitis can simply happen to you, only there is no surgery in Budva, you will be sent to Kotor, where services for foreigners cost 10 times higher than in other hospitals in Montenegro. I know how our people were billed there for 5000 - 7000 euros for an operation on appendicitis, instead of 500 as in Podgorica, or 0 euros if there was insurance. Read on.

Is it safe in Montenegro

One of the few countries in Europe where you can feel completely safe. This applies to both women and children. You will be amazed that:

  • lockers in the supermarket are not locked
  • many on the beach leave personal belongings unattended and swim away to the buoys
  • there are no high fences near houses, they often do not close the car
  • montenegrins do not steal what is bad on the street
  • hitchhiking in this country is a free and fairly safe service, but if you are a girl, I recommend that you immediately clarify that you are married in order to save yourself from a long dialogue, which you are lovely and went for coffee.
  • at night you can not be afraid to walk around the city, although they will come across a crowd of men, they will not offend you

Of course, the family has its black sheep. During the tourist season, neighbors from the Balkan countries come to Montenegro to steal petty: tourist apartments on the 1st floor, bicycles, bags on the beach, etc. Do not relax completely! I also note that in the tourism business in Montenegro, more than half of the workers are Serbs, Bosnians, Kosovars, Macedonians, and I cannot vouch for them. And don't forget about the gypsies, they usually wield in the summer in old cities, on the embankments and on the street terraces of restaurants.

As for me, it is dangerous in Montenegro in the wild mountains, and not in crowded places. There you are alone with a wolf, a bear, a wild boar and a poisonous snake 😄 Don't go to the mountains alone!

Smoking in Montenegro

One of the most slippery topics ... people smoke a lot in the Balkans! But since the summer of 2019 smoking inside restaurants banned! But they made it possible to smoke aikos, although they are not on sale yet, so take 1 block with you. So a Montenegrin cannot imagine his morning without coffee and a cigarette, they are allowed to smoke on the street terraces of the cafe.

With children at sea to Montenegro

In Montenegro, there is a cult of children, here they are loved and will never be offended. And since there are Russian kids with blond hair and blue eyes, for Montenegrins, this is just a doll! They will squeeze in the store while you pay at the checkout, pay attention to you on the beach and in restaurants, skip the line. Montenegrin popes are very caring and often walk with their children.

In Montenegro, there is no developed service for families with children, as in Turkey. If you are looking for hotels in Montenegro, where all inclusive, you will find a dozen options ... Look for hotels in Becici, they have their own territory, swimming pools, animators somewhere, good food and a good pebble beach with a smooth entrance. In the photo - the 5-star hotel Splendid, good because it works all year round, there is an excellent SPA. Nearby there is a 4-star hotel Iberostar, I praised its mothers with children. In Budva, I advise you to pay attention to the luxurious apartments Lux Sunrior, as during the season guests can relax by the pool and have breakfast there on the roof of the Tre Canne building overlooking the sea.

Many cafes on the embankment of Budva, Becici, Bar have playgrounds - so that parents can relax and gossip with friends, and children can play. In the summer, attractions, a trampoline will be put in Budva, a children's submarine will operate for walking along the sea and exploring its inhabitants. Also, some cafes have igonitsy (igralends), check their address at the place of residence. There are children's clubs, kindergartens with hourly pay, there are a lot of festivals and carnivals, the main thing is to be aware

And even if the service in Montenegro does not reach the standards you are accustomed to, it is safe, pleasant climate, clean sea, good ecology and understandable language. A child can make friends on a beach or sandpit vacation in a couple of minutes.

What money is in Montenegro

In Montenegro, exactly one money goes - the euro! But the country not part of the European UnionYes, it happens, for example, even on the territory of the Muslim part of Kosovo. There is no own currency in Montenegro, and before the euro there was the German mark (it was abandoned in 2002), and before that there was the Yugoslav dinar, which was "eaten" by inflation and the Yugoslav war.

The only period when Montenegro printed its own money - from 1906 to 1916, it was a pair of perpers and coins. The Kingdom of Montenegro gained independence at the end of the 19th century and developed as an independent state until the First World War ... There is a Museum of Money in Cetinje, be sure to visit!

Dollars in Montenegro are not accepted anywhere, it is better not to bring them. Or you will have to look for banks for exchange, but they work until 16:00, and there are no ordinary exchange offices in the resorts of Montenegro! Cash rubles and hryvnias will not be useful to you here either.

Take only euros in cash, and bills with a smaller face value are more valuable. A Montenegrin will react badly to 200 or 500 euros if you want to pay 1 euro for ice cream 😜

Bank cards are accepted in hotels, restaurants, grocery supermarkets and boutiques. DO NOT accept card payments in Montenegrin taxis, in markets, in remote mountainous and northern regions in shops and restaurants. In Montenegro, you can cash out euros with a ruble card at any ATM! By the way, there is a network of NLB ATMs with a menu in Russian.

How much does a trip to Montenegro cost

The price of a vacation in Montenegro is made up not only of air tickets and accommodation ... It is also from the airport, groceries in the store and trips to restaurants, medical insurance, shopping and souvenirs. Believe me, you can spend very different money on vacation! I would take for expenses from 50 to 100 euros per person per day... If you don't spend everything, that's fine too :)

You can save money in the off-season, when it is already warm, there is even a heated sea: April-May and September-October. All goods and services will become cheaper by 10-40%. About food in Montenegro, restaurants and some prices.

If you decide to look for apartments in Montenegro on your own, you don't need to ask me questions - And where can we live, choose a hotel. I have 2 jobs, a yacht and this guide site - I physically have no time to deal with your resettlement! There are great services for a long time - Arnbnb, here you will get a 30 € discount on your first booking. And also look at housing for any wallet on.

Do I need insurance to travel to Montenegro

When planning your trip yourself, I advise you not to ignore insurance. Especially on vacation with children. After all, climate change, other foods and water, a possible rotavirus during the peak season affect children in the first place. The most popular online service for buying insurance is, I read on Facebook that it is better to take Alpha Insurance.

Which airlines fly to Montenegro

There are 2 airports in the country - Podgorica (further from the sea) and Tivat... It is better to choose the second one, it is closer to the resorts, for example, it takes half an hour to go to Budva. From May to October, the number of flights increases many times - charters appear.

How much money to take to Montenegro

Montenegrins - mentality and their 10 commandments

Montenegrins are considered a lazy, unhurried people, they live in the "polako" style - slowly, enjoying every moment and not rushing anywhere. Tourists who come from megacities are amazed at such a life, criticize or envy! On magnets and souvenir circles you will see the "10 commandments of a Montenegrin":

They don't like to work a lot, it is better to snatch a big jackpot once a month, six months, than to work every day. Foreign workers (Serbs, Bosnians, Macedonians) are allowed to work in the largest areas of employment - tourism and construction, believing that this is a black and low-paid job ... Many live from season to season, and in winter they suffer from boredom, lack of money and Russian tourists

Comic announcement "Montenegrin working time":

Marry a Montenegrin

I want to warn our girls be careful with Montenegrin men... They are beautiful, tall, charming in an instant with their fairy tales, they say they are rich, super-businessmen and lovers. But in fact, after marriage, you find yourself in a terribly patriarchal environment, where his word is the law, for example, he can sit in cafes with friends for days, but you cannot. Montenegrin traditions are above your desires and habits. You will get up at dawn and bake bread, cook only Montenegrin high-calorie dishes, accept endlessly his relatives, lend money to everyone, serve them coffee from morning till night, heed the advice of his wise mother, get used to smoking in the apartment, carry bags of groceries herself, work like crazy and help in every way with his business. And the most unpleasant thing is that 90% of Montenegrins, especially those living by the sea, cheat on their wives, every summer this list is replenished with several mistresses, or even a dozen.

If this is your first time in Montenegro, be vigilant on the embankments and beaches, where gigolos and summer renters catch their victims every day. Under no circumstances admit that you have a business, your own apartment and a desire to move to this country.

I will quote a Russian traveler who found himself in Montenegro at the end of the 19th century:
Since there are no carts in the whole country and only the rich have mules, all supplies are transported and brought on the shoulders of women, representing the true model of tolerance. In the home, women send almost all work; only in agriculture, horticulture and beekeeping do men help them. The Montenegrin despises crafts, although he has a great ability for them; is also not engaged in trade, but provides all this to the Turks who settled in Montenegro.

But I would like to say a couple of good words about the Montenegrins. The further from the tourist spots you meet them, the more sincerely they will express love and hospitality to you... There is only one reason - you are a Russian (ex-USSR), and for this you will receive respect, travel assistance, free treats, invitations home for coffee, and so on. A common history, financial assistance since the time of Peter I, rendered to poor Montenegro almost every year, marriages in royal families, a common Orthodox faith have done their job.

Weather in Montenegro and water temperature

I'm tired of the daily questions about the weather in Montenegro. And all because the country is mountainous, the climate in different regions changes dramatically, near the sea coast there is one temperature, for example, +25 in May in Budva, meanwhile in Cetinje it is 7 degrees colder, and in Lovcen or in Zabljak it can go rain, snow or be +4. Look, you can go around the city for 7 days, there is an hourly forecast, I believe him only 3 days in advance. If a sunny day is promised, add +5 degrees.

I cannot call the Adriatic Sea warm, but rather invigorating. But in the heat + 35 + 40 it is impossible not to swim! Monthly water temperatures in Montenegro:
- in May +20 +22
- in June and September +22 +24
- in July and August +24 +26
- in April and November +18

But there are rare days - the north winds bring a cold current overnight. And the sea for the next three will become +19, even in August such a phenomenon may occur. It must be understood that Montenegro is influenced by many natural factors, the weather is not stable during the off-season, there are sandstorms and strong winds, rain and snow. I do not advise you to go in the off-season with excursions to the Prolektie and Durmitor mountains, not to climb the mountain passes, especially on cloudy and snowy days.
