Public transport Varna(Bulgarian city transport) is represented by an extensive network of buses, minibuses and trolleybuses. Approximate operating hours of transport are from 05:00 to 23:00. However, do not forget that Bulgaria is the Balkans, and you cannot always count on the proper and timely arrival of transport. The Varna public transport schedule can be found on special signs at transport stops. The timetable may differ in the summer and winter seasons.

Buses in Varna
The most important bus route for tourists in Varna is bus route No. 409, which goes to the Golden Sands resort. In the center of Varna, the bus makes the following stops, including stops at Varna attractions: bus station, Archaeological Museum, Cathedral, Dolphinarium, Botanical Garden, Water Park, Varna Mall (Grand Varna Mall). The cost of travel from Varna to Golden Sands by city bus No. 409 is 3 leva (1.5 Euro).
If you live in the area of the Varna Railway Station (Bulgarian: Central Railway Station Varna or ZhP Gara), located at Pencho Slaveykov Square 1, for example, in the Three Dolphins Family Hotel or in the Aqua Hotel, then it will be convenient for you to move around Varna by city bus No. 9.
Bus number 9 follows the route Varna Railway Station - St. Constantine and Helena - Riviera with a stop at the Varna Dolphinarium. From Varna railway station you can take a train to major cities in Bulgaria (for example, Sofia, Plovdiv or Burgas). Although train stations across Bulgaria are currently undergoing modernization, trains are not always new and often arrive late. Therefore, the most comfortable and convenient means of transportation around Bulgaria is a bus.
Trolleybuses in Varna
Currently there are 3 trolleybus lines in Varna. The lines also include new trolleybuses manufactured by Škoda. Trolleybus routes in Varna are listed below:
- No. 82 Bl. 407 - ZhP Gara, runs from 05:10 to 22:00 with a traffic interval from 15 to 37 minutes;
- No. 83 TIS "north" - ZhP Gara, runs from 06:00 to 21:00 with a traffic interval of 30 - 45 minutes;
- No. 88 Bl. 407 - Asparuhovo, runs from 05:00 to 20:35 with a traffic interval of 15 - 20 minutes.
Please note that neither buses nor trolleybuses run in Varna after 22:00 or 23:00, so if you are out late in Varna, call a taxi and do not rely on public transport at night: there is none in Varna.
Minibuses in Varna
The minibus stop in Varna called “Mladost” is located next to the railway station. The cost of travel by minibus is 1.5 leva (0.75 Euro). The fare is paid directly to the driver. The most popular minibus routes in Varna:

Varna Central Bus Station
Varna Central Bus Station (Bulgarian: Avtogara) is located at Vl. Blvd. Varnenchik 158. From here you can take a bus or minibus to other cities on the Black Sea coast of Bulgaria or even to destinations in other countries. From the Varna bus station you can get to cities such as Sunny Beach, Burgas, Albena, Golden Sands. In addition, international buses depart from here to Constanta, Odessa and more.
- Bus tickets from Varna to Burgas or Sofia It’s convenient to buy on the Infobus website, which has a version in Russian and good discounts on tickets to these destinations. For example, from Varna to Burgas you can get for 20 leva (10 Euro), from Varna to Sofia - for 50 leva (25 Euro) one way.
- Bus tickets from the center or airport of Varna to the resort towns of Bulgaria Unfortunately, you cannot buy online in advance, but you can order a Russian taxi in advance, which will take you to your hotel or apartment anywhere in Bulgaria at a competitive price. In the summer, when buses are crowded, taxis are an excellent alternative.
- Tickets from Varna to Istanbul can be purchased online from Turkish bus carrier Nisikli. Buses from Varna to Istanbul depart at least 2 times a day, the cost of a bus ticket is from 50 leva (25 Euro) one way.
International buses arrive at the Varna central bus station. I have listed some cities that can be reached by direct bus from Varna in the table below. It is very convenient and cheap to get to Varna from Ukrainian cities, especially from Odessa, since the distance is not that great, and the price of a bus ticket is certainly lower than the price of an air ticket.

Car rental in Varna

Varna Airport (IATA code – VAR) is an air terminal used by tourists flying to Bulgaria for a beach holiday. The distance from the airport to the city center is about 8 kilometers, to the Golden Sands resort - about twenty. There are several ways to get from Varna Airport to your hotel in the city or at the Resort: buses, taxis or rented cars.
Buses to the center and resorts
Several bus routes depart from Varna Airport in different directions; this is the most economical way to travel.
The bus stop is located next to Terminal 2 (to the right of the exit). Every half hour - from 5:30 to 23:00 - bus No. 409 departs from here towards the city. The ticket can be purchased upon boarding.
The fare is 3 Bulgarian levs, which roughly corresponds to 1.5 euros (2017). The travel time to the Varna Cathedral will take no more than twenty minutes, and to the Golden Sands resort it will take about an hour.

Bus route No. 409 runs through the city center to Golden Sands. If your hotel is located within Varna, you can get to the center (stop “Cathedral”) and transfer to the desired minibus or bus. You will also need to make a transfer if you plan to go not to Golden Sands, but to another resort.
Most common routes:
- Bus number 8: from the Cathedral to the resort of Saints Constantine and Helena. In this case you will need bus number 8;
- Buses No. 9 and No. 109: from the Cathedral to the resorts of Sunny Day, Golden Sands and Riviera. Also, bus number 9 is suitable for those who live near the railway station or are planning to continue their journey by train. The railway station stop is called “Zh/P Gara”.

If there’s a line, we’ll go downstairs, buy some wine and go back up to Raiffeisen :) Only this Raiffeisen didn’t manage to feed the photocopier of passports. As long as the driver's license was intact, they were satisfied with it :)

How to get from Varna airport to the city
The bus stop is located opposite the parking lot, between terminals 1 and 2. Opposite terminal 2 there is a stop for buses that come from Varna, and a stop opposite the VIP hall is for buses that go to the coast or to Varna.
City bus No. 409 (route Golden Sands - Aksakovo) runs to the center of Varna at intervals of 15 minutes from 6 am to 11 pm. The fare costs 0.6–1.8 levs depending on the distance.

Opposite Terminal 4 (international arrivals hall) there is a taxi rank. The cost of travel to the city center ranges from 6–16 levs. Travel time is 15 minutes.
If you rent a car, then to the center of Varna you need to drive about 8–10 km along the E70 highway.
You can rent a car at Varna Airport by calculating the cost of car rental. If you take care of booking in advance, you won’t have to overpay on the spot for a more expensive option (the profitable ones quickly run out) or, conversely, lower the usual level of car rental in Bulgaria.
