Hotels in Sardinia

Transport in Sardinia

Sardinia is the only region in Italy without toll motorways. But all roads are in excellent condition, with clear markings and pointers. One drawback is that in some places they are very narrow, it is especially scary to drive along steep mountain bends. Speed \u200b\u200blimits in settlements 50 km / h, on motorways 130 km / h.

For those who do not want to rent a car, the best option to explore the island is by buses and trains. But it is worth considering that in sparsely populated towns there are no railway stations at all, and buses can come only once a day. And you can get to very remote villages. Therefore, you should think about renting a car when going to Sardinia - because there will be an opportunity to see much more remote and charming places.

The demand for rental cars usually increases in July and August, so it is better to book it in advance. Today it is possible online, and in our experience the best sites for booking a car are:

  • Many gas stations only accept local credit cards or only cash.

And yet, if you decide to use public transport (buses), then tickets can be purchased at the ticket office of the railway station, at Western Union points, or in the bars closest to the stops. If for some reason you did not manage to buy a ticket, you can buy it directly from the driver. Also, the flight schedule may be limited on Sunday.

  • Railways in Sardinia are served by operators such as Trenitalia and ARST Gestione FDS.

The culinary traditions of the island of Sardinia

The sausages and cheeses of Sardinia are considered some of the best in Italy. Especially appreciated pecorino Sardo cheesemade from milk from local sheep.

Although the local cheeses are very tasty and appreciated in Italy, there are also not very common ones. One of them, its peculiarity is that it contains live insect larvae (cheese fly). Many of our fellow citizens have no idea what it is, because you cannot find this in our kitchen, so I suggest watching a short video about Casu Marzu cheese:

Porceddu is one of the traditional dishes of Sardinia. roast pig... Moreover, its weight should not exceed 5 kilograms.

Of course, seafood also plays an important role in Sardinian cuisine, especially dishes made from shellfish, tuna, mullet, lobster and squid.

The traditional pasta of Sardinia can be called malloreddus, while various sauces can be used here, but the pasta itself remains unchanged.

Another dish that any good mistress of the island knows how to cook is culurgiones. According to the cooking technology, it is somewhat similar to our dumplings, but potatoes, pecorino cheese, fresh mint and garlic are used as the filling.

A popular service in Sardinia is yacht and boat rental. Renting a boat will cost approximately 70-90 € (one day). Yachts are a little more expensive and most likely you can rent for at least a week.

Also don't miss the opportunity to take a boat cruise around archipelago Maddalena, an excursion with food tasting, as well as to visit a real Italian family and get a master class on cooking lunch - for detailed information on all excursions in Sardinia, see.

Porto Pollo is a great destination for water skiing, windsurfing and kitesurfing.

Also the island of Sardinia is a great place for sailing and diving. ...

Souvenirs

Sardinia is famous for its artisan shops and local delicacies, so there is no particular difficulty in what to bring from the island. Different areas are famous for their handicraft traditions. The baskets woven by local women are very common. Ceramics is an integral part of the history of Sardinia, with very popular ceramic products painted in blue on white background. They can be found in almost any souvenir shop on the island. ...

Finally, a video about a vacation in Sardinia (not very short, but very beautiful):

Tourists from all over the world are attracted by the beauty and warm climate of Sardinia. It is ideal for beach holidays, swimming, diving and hiking. In addition, the island preserves a centuries-old history and retains its special flavor.

Sardinia is paradise on earth, this is how most travelers speak of the island. Turquoise sea, golden sand and breathtaking landscapes will not leave anyone indifferent. I want to return to the island again and again. Because it is difficult to find anywhere else a tropical exotic, ideally combined with European service.

Many Italian islands are located in the warm waters of the Mediterranean, but why exactly does Sardinia attract tourists from all over the world? This is due to its unique uniqueness. The island is isolated from the whole world, it has its own special flavor. The tourist will discover a fabulous place with a unique history and culture, bays that fascinate at first sight.

It has everything for a comfortable stay - great hotels, restaurants, nightclubs and the courage of entertainment for travelers of all ages.

History

The first archaeological finds date back to the Neolithic era. On the island there are "tombs of the giants" (300 in total) - stone slabs installed on the graves and dating back to the II-I centuries. BC. These are the most ancient artifacts that speak of the first settlements on the island.

In addition to the tombs of antiquity, other early buildings have survived on the island - nuraghe or dry-masonry stone towers in the form of cones 10-20 meters high, as well as round huts made according to the same principle (II-VIII centuries BC).

The history of Sardinia is varied and includes many wars. Sardinia was conquered by Phoenicians, Romans, Vandals, Spaniards, Moors. In 1720, Sardinia became part of Italy.

If you look closely at the map, it seems that the island resembles a huge sandal. Therefore, it is believed that the name of the town was given by the ancient Greeks, since "sandaliotis" means sandal.

Best holiday season

Sardinia is centrally located between Corsica and Sicily, right in the middle of the Mediterranean. The unique landscape of the island creates different climatic zones. A few decades ago, there was not a single tourist in Sardinia. But thanks to the entrepreneurship of local residents, the tourism business has become the main source of income for the island.

The special climate makes Sardinia accessible for recreation all year round. However, the year is divided into seasons of high and low tourist activity.

High season

These are the summer months when beach holidays are most active. The water is warm, the sea breeze brings coolness. Lovers of solitude can merge with nature on unspoiled "wild" beaches.

Low season

Starts in mid-November. The island is noticeably emptying, as lovers of a quiet beach holiday are leaving. Now you can enjoy the sights and unique places of the island in tranquility and without fuss. It is from December to April that you can travel the whole island far and wide without haste and visit the most interesting February festivals.

The Velvet season

Falls in late September and early November. At this time, the island is very warm, the water temperature is not lower than 18 degrees. This allows you to soak up the beach under the gentle autumn sun.

Transport

The island has a well-developed transport network. Trains and buses run to many cities. For example, the cost of a train ride from Cagliari Central Station to Olbia is 18 euros.

Bus services are plentiful, but there can be only one or two trips per day in one direction. The cost of an intercity flight is about 6 euros. But you should be prepared for the fact that on the way transport will call in even the smallest villages, so a path of 30 kilometers can stretch for 2 hours or more.

For speed and ease of movement, you should use a taxi. The driver will take the price strictly according to the counter. One kilometer costs from 1 to 2 euros, plus a landing of about 4 euros.

If a tourist plans to travel a lot around the region, then it is better to rent a car.

Security

The island is not at all dangerous from a seismological point of view. You can learn about volcanoes, earthquakes and tsunamis here only on TV.

There is no crime rampant on the island. Everything is quiet, calm and happy.

Language

The main language of the island is Sardinian. Almost all regions speak this particular dialect, therefore the language received the status of a regional one. The main population - Sardis do not consider themselves Italians, therefore they constantly protest against the abolition of their national dialect.

Visa

Sardinia belongs to Italy, so to visit the island you need a visa that is acceptable for the country. Italy belongs to the Schengen area, therefore, you must have a Schengen visa.

How to get there?

The fastest way to get there is by air. The island has three modern airports serving flights from all over the world. Air ports are located in different parts of the island, so when ordering a ticket, you need to choose the airport that is closest to your holiday destination:

The most convenient flights are offered by Al Italia. There is one transfer for passengers in Rome, which will not take much time.

You can fly to any European capital, such as Berlin, London or Paris. These flights are very convenient because they leave daily.

If the traveler is already in Italy or on neighboring islands, then the most convenient way to get to Sardinia is by ferry. Such transport links are organized just fine. Ferries have extra comfort cabins. The largest receiving port is Olbia. This trip will take 5 to 8 hours depending on the time of day. Ferries run at night. For 8 hours of sea voyage, you can relax in cabins equipped with reclining chairs.

The cost of the cruise varies between 40-60 euros.

Where to stay?

Despite the fact that there are many interesting historical sights on the island, tourists prefer to concentrate on their beach holidays. In Sardinia, for tourists who like to relax with special comfort, villas or beach houses are offered.

Their price is very diverse and depends on the location, the service offered and the availability of the pool. A good option for a family of 5-6 can be found for 600 euros per week. Of course, there are more expensive offers. Most of the houses are located away from bus routes, so you need to get to them by taxi or rented car.

There are many hotels in tourist destinations, designed to suit different budgets. The cheapest accommodation will cost around 200 euros for 7 nights. In central cities such as Cagliari or Olbia, it is impossible to find an apartment for less than 500 euros per week, for which the tourist will be guaranteed an amazing view from the window.

More interesting things about Sradinia - in one of the episodes of the program "Heads and Tails":

With the island of Sardinia, Russia does not have a regular air service, but during the tourist season they organize charter from major cities - such as Moscow, St. Petersburg and Yekaterinburg. Planes arrive to Sardinia in airport of the capital of the island - Cagliari... However, it is not easy to buy a ticket for such a charter flight, because they are mainly bought by travel companies.

Into the city from Cagliari airport can be reached on a special bus- these are sent every thirty minutes. They reach the bus station, which is located on pl. Matteotti. The road takes approximately ten minest, travel costs four euros... Or use a taxi service.

Due to the difficulty of purchasing a ticket for a charter flight, independent travelers will most likely have to get to Sardinia with transfers. For residents of the capital, as well as St. Petersburg and Yekaterinburg, the most suitable option is to purchase a ticket for flight from the company Al italia with a change in Rome... It will be best in terms of saving timeandbecause this airline, being the national carrier, has the most convenient connections. In addition, most of the flights from Rome to the island of Sardinia are operated by Al Italia.

And the last option is to fly from Moscow or any other city of any of the European airlines, which ... read completely

HOLIDAY PRICES:

The cost of a holiday in Sardinia. June 2014.

tour cost

Visas + insurance for two cost 120 euros. Ryanair bought tickets for the Vilnius-Rome-Vilnius flight through the network for 250 euros. From St. Petersburg to Vilnius by car and back 100 euros. They left the car with friends for free. From Rome, that is, from Civitavecchia, to Sardinia, they traveled by ferry from the Saremar company. Tickets for it cost 150 euros. Apartments for 10 days - 360 euros, in an area called Isola Rossa, for 36 euros per day. It is more convenient to get around Sardinia by car. Car rental + gasoline - 250 +150 euros. The car was booked through the well-known Hertz. She was waiting for us at the Olbia airport.

All excursions were conducted independently, in a rented car. There are not many attractions in the classical sense. But there are a lot of beautiful places, beaches, etc. We went to a picturesque town called Castelcado. So you can see the ruins of an ancient castle and wander along the medieval streets of the center. Santa Teresa has a wonderful beach overlooking Corsica. A liter of gasoline costs 1.4 euros. We spent about 150 euros on gasoline in 10 days.

Food and products

Prices depend on distance to beaches and main tourist routes. There are many chain stores, where they are two or even three times lower. To dine in our understanding, that is, with a hot dish, in a bar or a restaurant on the beach, no frills, cost about 20-25 euros per person. Have breakfast from 5 to 10 euros. In supermarkets, prices are about the same as ours, or even higher, for example, wine from 10 euros. In a cafe: Pizza - 10-12 euros. Beer - 3-4.5 euros. A cup of coffee - 1 euro. Sandwich - 3-5 euros. Sometimes we cooked ourselves, sometimes we went to a cafe. About 50 euros per day was spent on food.

Cost of services and entertainment

Umbrella on the beach - 8 euros for the whole day. Chaise lounge - 10 euros. Snorkeling mask - 10 euros. Broken quickly, apparently Chinese. Catamaran on the beach - 10 euros per hour.

Useful information?

June holiday experience

In June it was quite hot, the sea was warm enough, there are noticeably fewer people on the beaches than in August. Roads are not congested, prices are lower than at the end of summer. In my opinion, this is a good time to relax.

Why is it better to have a rest in September?

It seems to me that September is the perfect time for a vacation in Sardinia, if you don't depend on school holidays. Very warm, few tourists, housing prices are falling noticeably, lots of local fruits and excellent wine.

Vacation with children

Sardinia has excellent beaches - clean, with good entry into the water and without much excitement near the coast. In terms of the number of children's entertainment, the island is noticeably inferior to Spanish resorts, but there are many interesting museums and historical sites that are worth seeing at school age.

What to take with you on vacation?

A good guide will not hurt, the island is worth taking a close look at not the most popular sights. Good sunscreen and comfortable shoes. Warm clothing if visiting the caves.

Where is the best place to stay?

We have been on the island several times and visited most of the resorts, I like Costa Smeralda in the north and the Maddalena archipelago the most. We went many times and with different budgets, of the hotels we liked the Colonna Resort Hotel in the town of Porto Cervo the most - they have wonderful clean pools and a good beach. There is a large selection of houses, villas, apartments in Sardinia at quite affordable prices, but it makes sense to rent a car - there are a lot of beaches, and it will definitely be interesting to drive along the coast. The Emerald Coast is located next to the airport in Olbia, it is easy and quick to get there, in my opinion this part of the island is more interesting than the south.

How to entertain yourself at the resort?

First of all, of course, it is worth visiting different beaches - in Sardinia they are amazingly beautiful, clean and quite different.

We liked the caves of Iz Zuddas - they lose in serving to the caves in Mallorca, but still very impressive.

It makes sense to travel around small picturesque towns, go to restaurants. If you are interested in nuragami, then in both parts of the island there are interesting ones, we were in Prisgiona - it's hard with children, but still interesting. Almost every city has interesting ruins, churches, basilicas and fortresses. Olbia has a good archaeological museum. If there is time and opportunity, then it is worth getting to the Maddalena archipelago - it is very beautiful there, on one of the islands there is the Garibaldi house-museum.

The beaches on the island (especially on the Costa Smeralda) are wonderful, it is very difficult to single out the best one; among the not most popular, but very beautiful, I want to mention the beaches near the village of La Conia (Barca Bruchata and Mannena) - there are several more of them, you can walk along small paths.

On the Spiaggia Bianca beach near Golfo Aranci we saw a flock of dolphins several times.

The general impression of the beaches is very good, the sea is clean, there were almost no sea urchins, and no jellyfish at all. The bottom is very interesting, you can see octopuses and large fish close to the shore, the sand is fine and very pleasant. The sea is calm, entry into the water is convenient.

There are sun loungers and umbrellas for rent almost everywhere, often not very new. There is often no shower on the beaches, lifeguards, in my opinion, are not enough.

Notable disadvantages include obsessive African traders who are difficult to drive away.

Despite the fact that Sardinia is not a cheap resort, the prices did not strike me as wildly high. I liked the small shops in Porto Cervo, a good selection of women's clothing made of cotton, not trivial styles. There are many quality handbags from brands that have not yet made their eyes dirty. An interesting selection of shoes. Great products can be bought.

Where can I eat?

In Porto Cervo, I liked Trattoria da Patrizia - there are many locals here, the interior is simple, but really very tasty.

In the same city, I liked the Accueil restaurant - it was delicious, good dishes and interior.

About the quality of food and service

Most of the restaurants were delicious, only one was shockingly bad. It was the only one where in the evening almost all the seats were free - apparently, the notoriety is spreading quickly. The staff is friendly, they don't cheat, they serve quickly.

How much does it cost to eat? About food prices.

At the Accueil restaurant, dinner for two with wine cost about 140 euros, you can eat for 50-60 euros for two. You can take pizza with you almost everywhere.

Entertainment

The entertainment intended for children was not particularly impressive. We were in the dinosaur park - it seemed rather boring, I liked the Dinosaur Museum in Switzerland in the canton of Zurich much more.

Useful information?

After driving through panoramic locations along the coast, you can enjoy magnificent landscapes with emerald-colored sea and quaint granite rocks. The number of yachts of various models and sizes is also striking. And in the greenery of the Mediterranean vegetation, here and there are the villas of the richest people, such as Silvio Berlusconi, Roman Abramovich, Alisher Usmanov and many others.

The heart of the Costa Smeralda is Porto Cervo.

In an absolutely amazing way, the incompatible is combined here: seemingly completely simple huts in the Mediterranean style have sheltered boutiques of famous expensive brands such as Gucci, Valentino, Versace, Dolce & Gabbana and many others. In the port of Porto Cervo, there is a luxurious yacht club where oligarchs moor their "ship masterpieces" today. Well, in September ...

Sardinia is rugged mountains, vineyard slopes, fishing villages, numerous groves of cork, oak, olive, marvelous meadows. Sardinia is an island of 100 colors and 100 scents, an island of sea, mountains, sun and silence.

The history of Sardinia is incredibly rich and interesting: great peoples have left their memory here: Phoenicians, Romans, Byzantines, and later Spaniards. Numerous thermal baths and amphitheatres, the fortified cities of Palmavera and Tiscali, Barumini, Santa Caterina and Santa Antine, watchtowers, of which there are more than 7,000, magnificent cathedrals in Romanesque and Gothic style, all this awaits guests of Italy on this extraordinary, mysterious island. Its virgin, half-empty beaches, isolated from the curious gaze of the lagoon and islets (which are so easy to reach by yacht) with fine white sand, emerald-colored water, clean air - are truly unique.

The ancient Greeks called this island "Sandaliotis" which meant "sandal". Since then, local residents have a legend that the Creator, having first set foot on earth, left a footprint on it in the form of a sandal, which has been preserved in the sea to this day in the form of an island and reminds of divine providence. Around 2000 BC Sardinia was inhabited by the powerful Nuragic civilization, it is assumed that the name of the ancient buildings "Nugari" originated from them - a historical feature of this magnificent island. These fortresses and watchtowers, built of giant stones in the form of truncated cones, have stood here for more than 25 centuries. The mystery of the origin of the Nuragas has not yet been solved. In addition to the Nuragas, guests of the island can visit: Costa Smeralda - the kingdom of granite rocks, green juniper bushes, virgin beaches and small islets. Sassari is the capital of the island of Sardinia during the reign of the Genoese and Spaniards, 15 kilometers from which the church of the XXII century Santa Maria di Sacardgia has been preserved, as well as it is curious to visit the Museum of Sanaa with archaeological finds and the Cathedral of the XIV century in the Baroque style. The city of Olbia, founded in the 6th - 4th centuries. BC.

The Roman port of Olbia connected Sardinia and Ostia. Not far from the modern airport is the medieval fortress of Pedreso Castele. In the old center of Olbia there are several churches from the 8th century. The city of Cagliari is the capital of Sardinia since the time of Rome. The most interesting in Cagliari will be a visit to the cathedral of the XII-XIV centuries. with the grave of Martin II of Aragon, the city walls with the Torre del'Elefante tower of the XIV century, the ancient Roman amphitheater of the II century. BC. and the early Christian church of San Saturino of the 5th century Arborea. Located west of the Canale delle Acque Medie. The city was founded in 1930. The houses are built in art nouveau and neo gothic style. The municipal building houses a collection of archaeological finds.

A short personal travel guide to Sardinia and everything you need to know for a budget trip to the island. Transport, lodging and attractions.

With this guide, I will summarize our trip to Sardinia, which lasted 10 days. During the trip, 6 cities were visited, several small treks into the mountains were made and kilograms of sun rays were absorbed on 12 beaches.

Sardinia travel guide

Although I spent only 10 days on the island, this was preceded by weeks of preparation. And now I think that I have something to say for those who are coming here for the first time and with a small budget.

How to get to Sardinia

There are three main airports in Sardinia, which are located near the three most visited cities by tourists - the Airports of Cagliari, Olbia and Alghero. Low-cost airlines Ryanair, easyJet, Vueling and others fly to these airports.

Ryanair flights are worth considering if you are flying from Eastern Europe, while easyJet and Vueling are from Western Europe and England. Budget tourists will be closer to Ryanair with a flight from Poland or Lithuania. There is also an airline, but it mainly operates flights to the island from mainland Italy.

I will repeat my advice given a little earlier in another story about Sardinia. In order not to waste time traveling around the island, it is advisable to fly to Cagliari airport and fly from Alghero airport or vice versa. In this case, there is no need to waste time returning back and you may get approximately the following route around the island, capturing almost all the most interesting places.

Short information about transfers from all three airports. If you need more information, then follow the links, each airport has a separate more detailed instruction.

  1. : the choice of options is not large - the ALFA city bus for 1 €, the Sassari-Alghero-Bosa intercity bus for 1.3 €. It is better not to use the latter - there is a risk of going in the wrong direction, it is more expensive and runs less frequently. will cost 50 €.
  2. : budget option - train for 1.3 €, tickets are sold on and in vending machines, to search enter stops Cagliari Elmas and Cagliari. Option for a large company with luggage for 35 €.
  3. : the easiest and cheapest way is city buses 2 and 10 for 1 €, which will take you just 5-10 minutes. A taxi costs a fixed 15 €, but it is also possible with a meeting at the airport for 30-40 €.

Transport in Sardinia

It is easy to get around the island by public transport without renting a car. More details about this in a separate instruction, and below is a short information on transport.

Long distance carriers Trenitalia and ARST travel around the island, and local transport companies operate in cities. Intercity buses and trains with air conditioning and comfortable seats, and since the ride usually takes no more than 3 hours, you won't get tired.

Trenitalia trains:

Unlike the mainland of Italy, trains are rarely late here, as the transport network is much smaller. Trenitalia trains connect almost all major cities on the island with the exception of Alghero and Nuoro.

Trenitalia train ticketsit is better to buy in Russian without any extra charges, since the official site is very confusing. Tickets purchased online are valid for 4 hours from the date of departure for any train and you do not have to worry about being late.

ARST buses and trains:

The company represents almost all intercity transport on the island, and sometimes urban transport. These are mainly buses, but there are also short-distance trains. The company's website has a timetable for all buses. See the page for the fares for buses and trains.

Finding accommodation in Sardinia

About finding accommodation, I repeat the same advice that I give in my travel stories. I will give them here, because they really help to find a suitable option and at the same time not overpay.

Hotels in Sardinia:

If you prefer hotels, then in order not to overpay, use this site, this site does not book rooms, but indicates where to book them without overpaying. When booking hotels, be sure to use it, it will save 10-20%.

Apartments in Sardinia:

Apartments are often cheaper than hotels and this option is for those who want to feel like a local. There is an opportunity to cook in the apartments, which means you will reduce the cost of food. The largest number of offers of apartments and even rooms for a day on a site tested over the years.

In order to have only positive impressions from living on vacation, follow one very important advice - book accommodation with a lot of good reviews and avoid trouble.

Sardinia landmarks

The main attraction of the island of Sardinia is the ancient Nuraghe from the civilization that lived here in 2000 BC. and disappeared like Atlantis. But if there are no traces of Atlantis at all, then at least something remains here, and while historians and scientists argue about the origin and purpose of these structures, we, as tourists, will appreciate the mystery even more.

Su Nuraxi di Barumini

The largest Nuraghe complex is located near the town of Barumini. The easiest way is to get here on your own from Cagliari by ARST bus or for 4.9 €. Nuraghe di Barumini is located outside the city, 1.5 km from its center.

Another solution to how to get to Nuraghe is to order an excursion in Russian, the price of which includes a transfer from Cagliari.

Cagliari is the capital of the island and the largest city on the island. It is a good place to start your immersion in Sardinia with it, as all the following cities on the island will be getting smaller, and the feeling of the real spirit of Sardinia is getting closer.

I will name the TOP that you need to visit to put a tick - I was here. If you need more than just a tick about visiting the city, then it is worth making two small tracks, which will take a maximum of 1 day - this is
