The town of alberobello province of bari region of apulia italy. Alberobello. Apulia. Alberobello - Italy

Alberobello is the town of the "gnomes". Incredible, unusual, bewitching, fabulous ... He earned a special "nickname" thanks to the houses of the trulls, which are practically one on one located on the city hills. They are cylindrical structures with roofs in the form of a cone, which depicts the signs of the zodiac, religious symbols, etc. And Alberobello is the only city where the quarter of such houses is almost completely preserved. For this, Alberobello is considered the cultural capital of the Yttria Valley. Having visited this town only once, you will definitely want to come back here again. People come here to relieve stress, enjoy real organic products, appreciate the hospitality of the locals and the uniqueness of the trull houses.

Geography

Alberobello is located in the southern part of Italy - near Bari, Puglia region. The city is located on the coast of the Adriatic Sea on two hills between which the river flows. The eastern part is modern Alberobello, the western part is a historical heritage, it is here that the trulli are located. From year to year, many pilgrims come here, visiting the basilica (in honor of the martyrs Damian and Cosmas). Trulli is the "highlight" of this city, which forms the texture of the old districts of Ayia Piccola and Monti. They are the national monuments of Alberobello. Once upon a time, oak groves grew on this place, which were actively used to create various military mechanisms. Hence the name of the city of Alberobello, which comes from the Latin words "arbor" and "bellum" (translated as "tree", "war"). The area of the city is 40 km², according to the 2004 data, the population is 10 930 people (with a population density of 271 people / sq. Km.). Geographic coordinates of the town: 40 ° 47'00 ″ s. sh. 17 ° 14'00 "in. e. Alberobello time zone: UTC + 1, in summer the transition to UTC + 2 is carried out.

Climate

Alberobello has a moderately warm climate, which is characterized by a large amount of precipitation (646 mm per year, in November, on average, 77 mm). Even in the hottest month, there can be quite a lot of rainfall. The average annual temperature is 13.7 degrees. The warmest month is August (the average temperature is 22.4 C, the maximum is 28.1 C), the coldest month is January (the average temperature is 6 C, the maximum is 9.6 C). Fluctuations of 16.4 C are observed between the dry and rainy months. The active season is from May to October. In summer, it is best to come in the evening, when the heat subsides a little. In winter, the rest is also quite comfortable, because the temperature practically does not drop below 5-6 degrees (the minimum temperature was recorded in January - 2.5 C). And in winter, on the eve of Christmas, festivals are held here, accompanied by light shows. Although there is no sub-zero temperature here, as well as snow, due to the constantly high humidity, the cold feels different - it penetrates "to the bone." When it is sunny and no wind in winter, it can seem like spring is outside.

History

The Yttria Valley was first mentioned in the 16th century. During this period, for the purpose of cultivating the land, peasants were brought (led by Andrea Matteo III, the Aquaviva dynasty). Due to the reluctance to pay tax to the king of Naples, people had to build housing from limestone they collected with their own hands, without using a connecting solution. There was a stone at the base of the house - as soon as it was removed, the structure turned into a pile of stones. As a result, the tax did not have to be paid - after all, in fact, the Inquisition did not find any housing. The dukes eventually prospered without spending a penny, but the peasants constantly had to rebuild. But this "technique" was used only once, when in 1644 the whole settlement turned into ruins overnight. In 1797, King Ferdinand exempted Alberobello from taxes - this allowed residents to build more reliable houses, using anchorage. But such "daredevils" were few, since at any moment everything could change again. Trulli were actively erected until 1925 (it was then that a decree was issued banning the construction of such structures), although these were no longer limestone buildings, but more durable - mortar was used. Today these houses are for sale, there are also museums, souvenir shops, and a wine collection in such buildings. The very name of the houses comes from the Greek "τρούλος", which means "dome". The oldest trulli buildings of the 16th century are located in the Murja area. For almost the entire 20th century, this town was in decline; 50 years ago, a trulli house could be purchased for about 2,000 euros. Since 1996, the trulli in Alberobello is part of the UNESCO World Heritage Site, then the situation changed dramatically. Tourists flooded here, and the price of interesting houses is sometimes equal to 1 million euros.

Alberobello landmarks

 • The city of Alberobello is known as the "capital of the trullo". Trullo is a whimsical architecture unique to the Italian region of Apulia. Trullo - houses with conical roofs in the shape of a cone. There are about a thousand trullo buildings in the Alberobello Monti area. They are located on seven streets leading to the top of the hill. The panorama is crowned with tsurkovi-trullo Sant'Antonio. In the area of Ayia Piccola there are about 400 tons of trullos, this part of the city is almost untouched.
 • The first evidence of the cult of Saints Cosmas and Damian (in the Russian tradition - Kuzma and Demyan) among the inhabitants of the city of Alberobello appeared already in the 16th century. Probably, the inhabitants of this small town began to venerate these saints after the Counts of Aquavivo and Skoneversano brought a small image of the Madonna and two twin brothers to Alberobello. The Basilica of Saints Cosmas and Damian was built in the neoclassical style. The facade of the building was built in 1885. It is decorated with long pilasters, fluted columns with Carimbe capitals and two Roman columns with composite-style capitals.
 • The Church of Sant'Antonio is an austere structure in the Trullo style. The church is located on a steep hill in the Monti area. Erected in a few months, the church opened its doors to visitors in 1927. It rises above the city, symbolizing the struggle with other religions. At least that was the intention of the customer Antonio Dibrevis. The church is distinguished by an imposing main entrance and a staircase above a round window that leads to a small room in the dome of the church, topped with a Greek cross. There is a bell tower next to the trullo dome.

Alberobello is a city in the heart of the Valle dell Itria, home to 11,000 people. The unusual Trulli houses that built up the center of Alberobello were recognized as a National Monument of Italy in 1930 and included in the UNESCO World Heritage List since 1996. The international organization noted the originality of the Trulli, the homogeneous nature of the settlement's development and how they preserved the building culture of prehistoric origin.

The old town is located in the southern part of Alberobello and consists of two quarters - Monti and Ayia Piccola; in total there are about 1,400 trulli here. The northern part of the city is more modern; small streets, crossing, form a whole labyrinth here.

As soon as you get to Alberobello, it seems to you that you are in the middle of a huge rainbow, from which your head is slightly dizzy: the blinding whiteness of the "trulli", the azure of the transparent sky, the red color of the fields, pink - wild orchids, purple - grapevine, pinkish pearl - pomegranate, chestnut - medlar and ruby-scarlet - fresh tomatoes. Whatever you look at in Alberobello, everything gives the local landscape a fabulous and fantastic view. The colors are mixed with equally rich and heady aromas, which, once experienced, are difficult to forget later.

What to see

Trulli

The history of these very unusual houses dates back to the decree of the Neapolitan king, who established a special tax for each new settlement. Then the owners of the land on which Alberobello stands today ordered the local residents to build their houses without using mortar, so that they could be easily disassembled so as not to pay tax. The peasants, who had only stones left for construction, found a way out of the situation: they began to build round houses with a domed roof from stone rings laid one on top of the other. This structure turned out to be the most durable and took the least time to build. This is how the first trulli appeared.

Later, tents decorated with mystical and religious symbols began to be built over the roofs. Associated with local beliefs, church holidays, or zodiac signs, these symbols helped find the right home.

"Trullo Lies"

The "Chief", or, if you like, "Tsar Trullo" is located in Piazza Sacramento, behind the Basilica of Saints Cosmas and Damian. This impressive building is the largest trullo structure ever built, and also the first to be constructed using mortar. An unknown architect placed the main entrance to Trullo Sovrano on the south side and decorated it with an arch, in which the lunette is decorated with paintings from the first half of the 19th century. depicting one of the scenes of the Way of the Cross.

Once inside and passing a small bedroom on the left, you will find yourself in a spacious hallway with a cruciform vault. Further - a spacious kitchen with access to the garden. The door on the left leads into the rooms that form the original core of the living quarters around which all other building elements were erected. Above the vault of the entrance hall rises the traditional trullo roof, under which the second floor is located; in the old days there was a room for guests or for weaving. The staircase leading upward is carved right into the thickness of the wall.

Over the years, the Trullo Sovrano building was used as housing, grocery and chapel. In 1785, the relics of Saints Cosmas and Damian were placed here. And from 1823 to 1837. it housed the oratorio of the brotherhood of Santissimo-Sacramento. Now this building, restored in 1993, is a private property and is used as an exhibition area and space for cultural events.

"Siamese Trulli"

Walking down the street-stairs via Monte Nero, pay attention to this old house, erected on a limestone rock. It is built on several levels, without windows, and large blocks of rock serve as a foundation.

In fact, there are two whole trullo houses, which are why they are called “Siamese”. They have two cone-shaped roofs (the space between them is hidden from the outside under a single ceiling) and two entrances facing different streets. Initially, the two houses were connected by a small door.

In "trulli", built not so long ago as "Siamese", the double structure is not found, therefore "twins" are considered a model of the archaic type of such buildings. And, of course, there are many legends about their shape.

Monti Quarter

In 1996, UNESCO recognized the neighborhoods (here they are called "rione") Monti and Ayia Piccola as a World Heritage of Humanity. Monti, home to more than a thousand Trulli, stands on a hillside in the southern part of the city, beyond Via Largo Martellotta.

Eight parallel streets running from north to south cut the block along. The most ancient houses are in the streets of Monte Nero, Monte Pasubio, Monte San Michele and Monte Sabotino; many of them have now been converted into small souvenir shops.

In 1843, the City and Countryside Police Regulations were issued, which prohibited the residents of Alberobello from using traditional construction techniques. This ban was observed on all city streets, except for the Monti quarter, where the poorest people lived. It was this factor that ensured the preservation of an impressive part of the old buildings (while the traditional technique was still in use, there were at least two thousand “trulli” in the city). In 1910, the quarter as a whole received the status of a national monument: the state recognized that its original appearance was of interest to the entire country, and it was forbidden to build here using new technologies so as not to spoil the landscape, the stylistic dominant of which is precisely the "trulli".

Ayia Piccola quarter

At the beginning of the XIX century. this quarter consisted of 400 trulli. Its name (lit. "small barn" - approx. Per.), According to the historian Notarnikola, is associated with the fact that in the eastern part of the city, where it is located, there was once a small barn. It was built when the harvest began so much that a large threshing floor was not enough.

Trulli in Ayia Piccola © Alison Waller / Flickr.com

Today this quarter, designated a National Monument in 1930, is the only part of the city not affected by commerce. Walking through its streets - Duca degli Abruzzi, Verdi, Colombo, Galilee and La Marmora, you will see that each trullo differs from its neighbors in structure and material. In addition, it is here that you can get at least a fragmentary, but still an idea of how Alberobello looked a few decades ago. Tiny squares, numerous lanes, some of which are inaccessible to cars - all this is like footage from a distant and alluring past.

Church of Sant'Antonio

The church, whose bulk dominates the landscape of the Monti quarter, was built in just 14 months on the initiative of the historian Martino De Leonardis. The original project was only partially implemented: a number of changes were made by engineer Bianchi di Bari. Construction was completed in 1927, and a few years later the temple was donated to the Congregation of Servants of Charity, who made it their new parish church.

The facade of the building is divided into three volumes. The central part consists of a large arch in which the main portal opens. In the plan, the building is an equilateral cross, and the roof is made in the traditional "trullo" technique and is crowned with a lantern with a square base. Four central pilasters support semicircular arches, which in turn support the side arches.

After some time, a building for the seminary was attached to the church building, which blocked the flow of light into the temple from the side of the bell tower.

The interior initially had only one altar and a large crucifix by Adolfo Rollo. In 1954-1960. the temple was significantly rebuilt. The central altar was redesigned according to the needs of the clergy, and the two side altars - the one on the right, dedicated to the Virgin Mary, and the one on the left, dedicated to Saint Anthony - were raised.

What to try

The cuisine in Trulli City is simple: it concerns both the ingredients and the technological side of cooking. Local dishes preserve the gastronomic traditions of medieval peasants: a short thermal treatment, the use of fresh vegetables, olive oil, seasonal products and legumes. Fresh tomatoes and other vegetables are dominant in this cuisine, so it could be called "sunny".

Peeled beans

Peeled bean soup is one of many traditional Alberobello recipes. It takes very little time to prepare it, and few ingredients are required. After soaking the beans for about twelve hours, they add hake, a marine fish that is easy to find in the Mediterranean. Once the fish is ready, add white onions and bay leaves to the soup. It is often served with wild chicory or boiled turnip tops with olive oil.

"Cr'shaul" with dried cod stew

"Cr'shaul" is a type of lasagna made from wheat flour. Since Alberobello is close to the sea (about 20 km), the local cuisine is heavily fish-based. Therefore, such lasagna is often accompanied by a cod sauce, although the option with tomato and basil can also be used - it is not only vegetarian, but also takes much less time.

Alberobello

The 3-star Cuor Di Puglia is located 5 minutes' walk from Alberobello's historic center. It features an outdoor pool. We chose this hotel because I wanted to see the trullas and relax by the pool (stayed for 2 nights). And they were not disappointed. Although in early October the water was already cool (for me personally), but it was pleasant to sunbathe in the morning. And in the evening it is very cozy to sit in the garden. The pool has brown wicker sun loungers (and in sufficient quantity). All around is cleanliness and silence. There is a small supermarket next to the hotel in an adjacent building. The choice is certainly not fancy, but better than nothing :-) Not far from a specialized shop with cheeses and wine. The hotel is located a little away from the trulli, 5-10 minutes walk. By the way, buses with sightseers are brought to the bus stop opposite the hotel. And from this site everyone goes on foot to the city. The staff are very friendly. Although they speak English poorly, we agreed very well ;-) By the way, the rooms are very clean. For example, on this trip to Italy, we stayed in 5 hotels. So I give this hotel 1st place for cleanliness. The breakfasts are also good (for Italy). Yoghurts, cheese, sausage, eggs, tomatoes, various pies, juice and coffee ... We came to Alberobello from Bari by train. From the railway station walk about 15 minutes. And we were leaving by bus to Monopoli. So the bus stop (exactly what the stop, not the station) is on the same road. If you need a stop, ask the hotel and you will be marked on the map. The bus to Monopoli travels 40-50min. And it goes about every 2 hours.

Alberobello

This sophisticated 4-star hotel is in the historic center of Alberobello, in the beautiful Puglia countryside. Excellent location just a short walk to Trulli areas. Breakfast was very good - loved the fresh fruit and home made yogurt. Easy parking at property on close by on street.

This unusual town, protected by UNESCO, on the map of Italy should be looked for in the very "heel", above the heel of the "Italian boot".

Location of Alberobello on the map of Italy

The city of Alberobello in Italy is primarily known for its dwellings unlike any other in the world.

Low buildings of a rounded shape, built of stone, with a round stone roof, these are Trulli houses, known to tourists all over the world.

The beautiful Alberobello (Italian: Alberobello) looks like a city of a lost civilization. Snow-white, with rounded houses everywhere, all in greenery and flowers ... Alberobello - translated from Italian means: "albero" - "tree" and "bello" - "beautiful".
The city was founded between 1400 and 1500 on an area covered with forests. Alberobello occupies land subject to high erosive effects of rainwater, both on the surface and in the depths of bedded limestone. It is for this reason that the buildings were made not of wood, but of stone.

Since in those days the legislation acted in such a way that the tax was charged on a building with a roof, residents went for a trick.

The houses were built in a circular pattern with a roof of rough, flat stones. With this construction method, no mortar was used. When they noticed approaching tax collectors, they quickly dismantled the roof. So they avoided paying an unbearable tax.

You will learn more about these amazing buildings in the video:

Various symbols depicted on the conical roofs of the trulli, using lime, are still adorned with houses. Some of them mean the protection of the family living in this house, others against the evil eye, the next were used to worship the deity in order to get a good harvest.

What to see

Moving around Alberobello exclusively without a car. Upon arrival in the city, you can park your car at one of the many parking lots. Usually at the reception of the selected hotel, they will prompt and guide you to the parking lot.

Walking around the city of Alberobello in Italy, exploring its streets, round trulli, shops and craft shops is already a pleasant excursion, albeit without a guide.

The differences from the generally accepted tourist destinations in Italy are very great.
