The Livigno ski resort is located on the border of the Italian administrative region of Lombardy and the Swiss Confederation.

It opened in 1958 in the Alta Valtellina recreation area, based on 3 small villages.
The resort is surrounded by mountain slopes that divide it into 2 parts.

Climate

The popularity of Livigno is due to the fact that it is rarely cloudy in these places.
The sun shines all year round: 200 days out of 365. Snow usually falls in mid-autumn and remains until early May.
Blue trails for beginners lead towards Carosello, and more difficult ones in Mottolino.

The depth of the snow cover can be up to 2 meters. Mountain ranges protect the area from the winds. The daytime temperature in winter is +5 on average, and at night it reaches -8.

The local routes rise from 1816 to 2800 m above sea level. Their length is 115 km. The longest stretches for 8900 m.

There are 2 types of slopes in Livigno.

The Monte della Neve trail is located at an altitude of 2785 m. From this mark, difficult red and black trails go down.

On the opposite slope is Trepalla with easier tracks for intermediate riders. The longest slope leads directly to Livigno.

The distribution of tracks by difficulty level is as follows:

  • blue tracks (for beginners) - 35 km;
  • red (middle level) - 57 km;
  • black (hard) - 23 km;
  • cross-country skiing trails - 40 km.

The simplest trails go in the direction of Carosello, they have their own names: Passo d'Era Tiola, Costacchia and Monte della Neve Sponda and are equipped with drag lifts. Chairlifts operate on more difficult trails towards Mottolino.

If you buy a special Alta Valtellina pass, you can ski on the Santa Catarina and Bormio slopes. A free shuttle bus runs to them regularly.

Skiers are delivered to the slopes by 33 ski lifts, of which 3 are cable cars, 15 are chairlifts, and 14 are drag devices (the skier is lifted with a cable).


There is a ski rental shop near Carosello. There you can take skis for children and adults, snowboards, snowshoes.

Resort equipment

In addition to downhill skiing, skiing and snowboarding on prepared tracks, you can try yourself in freeriding in Livigno, that is, skiing on the same equipment, but on virgin snow.

In December, a 42 km ski marathon starts in Livigno. Any skier from the age of 18 can take part in it. The application must be submitted in advance.

Price: 40-60 euros. The first 12 people receive prizes from the organizers, all other small souvenirs.

For those who come with a family and do not really like the descent, there are other entertainments: figure skating, dog sledding.

There are halls with tennis courts, bowling, you can swim in the indoor pools.

Schools

A horse riding school for children and adults has been opened in Lavigno. It has accumulated a lot of experience in teaching children various sports, including the smallest tourists (from the age of three).

Classes are conducted by specially trained instructors, including Russian-speaking ones.

The resort is annually replenished with new slopes and lifts, new hotels are being built. Now there are more than 70 of them.

Parks and museums

Connoisseurs of natural landscapes and lovers of animals will certainly visit the parks-reserves.

In Stelvio Park there are observation towers from where you can admire the pets, many of which are rare species.

And in the botanical park, unique alpine flora is preserved, for example, old rare larch trees.

There are museums of medieval weapons and archeology in the park. The latter was created in the Abbey of Saint Maria di Monte, built back in 1150.

The park often becomes a concert venue where folklore groups from Europe perform, concerts and festivals are held. There are also places for mountaineering.

How to Get to Livigno

The nearest airports are Milan (230 km) and Innsbruck (185 km), Zurich (206 km). The road from Milan airport (Malpensa) takes about 4 hours, from Zurich can be reached in about 3 hours.
From Milan and Bergamo airports - via Sondrio, Bormio, Foscano Pass (the pass is open around the clock all year round). From Verona airport - via Trento, Passo Tonale, Ponte di Legno (Val di Sole), Aprica, Bormio. From Switzerland - through the toll tunnel "Munt La Schera". The nearest railway station is Tirano (70 km south-west of the resort). In winter, the Stelvio passes (near Bormio, in Italy) and the Passo Forcola in Switzerland are closed.

At the beginning and end of the season, for reservations of 4 nights or more in hotels or 7 nights or more in apartments (participating in the promotion), the ski pass is free of charge. The promotion is valid until December 22 and from 7.04 to 1.05.

Alpine skiing in Livigno

Above the resort there are more than 100 km of trails, mostly blue and red. The best opportunities for expert skiing are in the Val Federa, with spacious snow fields and freeride routes. The resort is also popular with snobordists, primarily due to the abundance of snow and the opportunities for freeriding.

The funicular rises to a height of 2797 m, from here start blue and red tracks, with enough relief, but not particularly difficult. In another ski area, Motolino (2349 m), you can choose one of two routes: first, climb above Monte della Neve (2785 m), from the top of which rather difficult black and red trails begin, and then master the opposite slope and go down to Trepalla. Here the slopes are simpler, especially attractive for those who skate on the middle level is the long, uncomplicated descent back to Livigno. There are two ski areas for beginners in Livigno. In the direction of Carozello (3000 m), many drag lifts depart from Livigno, serving short blue trails at the foot of the mountain. The second training sector is located closer to the lifts at Costaccia (2328 m). A snow park with a 100-meter half-pipe was built on Motolino, there is a border cross track.

Entertainment and attractions

The fact that Livigno is located on the border of two countries - Italy and Switzerland, leaves an imprint on its atmosphere - there are interesting cultural, architectural and historical monuments here.

The main architectural attraction - St. Mary's Church was built at the end of the 19th century on the site of the previous one that has not survived. The current building completely copies it. The price of ski passes depends on when they are purchased. If you buy a week before the planned date, then the price is lower, if on the same day or shortly before, the price is already higher.

  • Much also depends on age. For those who are under 18 years old, there is tariff "Junior"... On it, the ski pass costs 27 euros per day.
  • And there is also tariff "Senior"... This is already for people who were born before 1950. For them, the cost will be equal to 31 euro per day.
  • Children under 9 years old - free.

Trails, slopes, lifts

Livigno consists of three small villages located in a valley for 8 km. Therefore, the ski area is divided into Carozello and Motolino. The height above sea level of these areas is practically the same - 2800 m, however, the tracks in Motolino are more difficult.

In general, both areas are great for beginner or intermediate skiers, as the bulk of the slopes are blue and red. The tracks are well-groomed and wide. The sun illuminates Carosello until noon, and then Motolino, so, depending on the time of day, you can see a small queue for one or the other lift.

In the event that you do not yet master the skill of skiing, ski schools are located right next to the ski lifts.

The total length of the ski slopes in Livigno is 100 kilometers. The most represented are tracks of average difficulty level. There are 28 ski lifts on the territory of the ski resort. The difference in elevation on the slopes ranges from 1816 to 2800 meters. The longest slope is 7 kilometers. The flat tracks have a total length of 40 kilometers.

Livigno provides ample opportunities for outdoor activities for snowboarders. There is also a bordecross track, half-pipe.
