According to legend, some Atlanteans escaped and fled to Tibet, where they built giant pyramids topped with large crystals, which supposedly served as antennas for receiving large amounts of energy from space.
In 1970, diving enthusiast Dr. Ray Brown discovered an unusual find near the island of Baria, in the Bahamas. During his immersion under water, he saw a pyramid. There was a crystal in the middle of an unknown structure. When Brown decided to take the crystal in his hands, he heard a voice inside himself, warning of danger. After that, all members of the team miraculously aged in a matter of seconds. The most mysterious thing in this story is the fact that they surfaced in the Indian Ocean at a distance of 10 thousand miles from Bermuda!
At the bottom of the Bermuda Triangle, in the summer of 1991, a sensational find was made. Namely, a giant pyramid was discovered. Its size was 3 times the size of the Cheops pyramid. And the walls were absolutely clean and smooth, made of a material that resembled glass. It seemed that it was not made of blocks (there were no traces of them), but was a single whole.

Introduction.
There are so many interesting things in the world! In the world around us, we had the topic “Be able to see”, and the teacher told us that sometimes amazing things are under our noses, but we do not notice them. For example, crystals. I was surprised, because in my opinion crystals are diamonds, diamonds. I was even more surprised when I learned that the usual salt and sugar are crystals, and that they can be grown at home. And I decided to test the possibility of growing crystals from table salt and sugar.
Relevance research is that growing crystals is an exciting activity and, perhaps, the simplest, most accessible and inexpensive for young researchers.
Hypothesis research: we suggest that salt and sugar crystals can indeed be grown at home.
Target work: learn and tell classmates interesting information about crystals, about their shape, about how crystals appear.
In accordance with the objectives, the following were set tasks :

- Learn how to grow crystals.
- Grow salt and sugar crystals.
Object research are crystals.

- Study of theory on a given topic, analysis of literature and other sources of information;
- Systematization of the obtained theoretical and practical knowledge.
Practical valueresearch is that it can be used in the lessons of the surrounding world, in extracurricular activities, it can motivate other students in the class to engage in scientific activities.
Chapter 1. Theory
What are crystals?According to the encyclopedia, a crystal is a solid in which atoms are arranged regularly, forming a crystal lattice. The word comes fromκρύσταλλος, which originally meant ice, later - rock crystal, crystal.
There are different crystals in nature. For example, snowflakes, frosty patterns on glass windows and frost that decorates tree branches in winter. Many crystals are products of living organisms. Some types of molluscs have the ability to build up mother-of-pearl on grains of sand caught in the shell. After 5-10 years, pearls are formed. Crystals are diamonds, rubies, sapphires and other precious stones. People use them in jewelry. Table salt and sugar are also crystals.
Crystals are of natural origin and artificial, grown in specially created conditions. And each person, if desired, can grow crystals at home.
Salt. It is a food product that occurs naturally in the form of a mineral called "rock salt". There is especially a lot of salt in sea water. Without salt, animals experience salt starvation. Predators provide their body with salt from the prey coming from meat, herbivores look for salt protrusions, salty soils, lick them. For humans, the most useful salt is obtained from sea water. This salt increases the body's resistance to disease. According to research by scientists, a person can eat 10-15 grams (tablespoon) of salt per day. Salt is an important seasoning, without which food is bland. Vegetables are harvested with it for the winter (cucumbers, tomatoes, cabbage are salted). There is enough salt in dairy products, vegetables and meat for a person so that he does not lack it. Salt is found in vegetables and some fruits. Salt has been known to mankind since ancient times and was literally worth its weight in gold. It was kept in special caskets, exchanged not only for goods, but even for land. Hence the popular omen - sprinkled salt, to a quarrel, failure. Salt has always been treated with respect and economy. Salt was brought to Kievan Rus from salt lakes in the Black and Azov seas. Here it was bought and taken to the North. Salt was so expensive that at solemn feasts it was served on the tables of noble guests, while others dispersed “without salt”. Salt is also a symbol of hospitality and friendship. The Russian people have put together many proverbs about salt:
It's not satisfying without bread, and it's not tasty without salt.
No bread, no salt, a thin conversation.
Among the Tatars: If you are bitter, be like salt, if you are sweet, be like honey.
The expression "Eat a pood of salt" means that people have known each other for a long time and well.
Whatever salt is, it is necessarily crystalline.
Sugar. Sugar - this is the common name for sucrose. The homeland of sugar is India. Sugar is made from sugar cane or sugar beet. In Europe, sugar was already known to the Romans. Brown sugar grains were made from sugarcane juice and imported into Europe from India. When sugar was first brought to Russia, only the prince and his entourage could taste it. The first "sugar chamber" in Russia was opened by Peter I in the early 18th century, and raw materials for sugar were imported from abroad. Since the 19th century, the production of sugar from domestic raw materials began to be established - sugar beets, first near Tula, and then in many regions of the country.
The common sugar, called sucrose, refers to carbohydrates that are considered valuable nutrients to provide the body with the energy it needs. Extremists were ready to declare sugar altogether"Sweet poison" ... In recent years, views regarding the effect of sugar on some physiological functions of the body have undergone marked changes. Basically, the opinions of researchers were inclined to the need to limit the consumption of this product with age, which is quite logical, since centuries of experience draws the attention of descendants to the benefits of moderation. You just need to remember the old saying: "Too much food is a disease and trouble."
Chapter 2. Practical part
Getting a crystal at home.Having studied the literature, I found out that at home, crystals can be obtained from various substances that can be bought: table salt, sea salt, soda, copper sulfate, sugar, alum.
I learned about ways to grow crystals from these substances. Copper sulfate is poisonous, so I ruled it out. We could not buy alum in the pharmacy, so the choice fell on table salt and sugar, which are in every home.
How are crystals formed?The formation of a crystal is a gradual "sticking" of molecules of a substance onto a small crystal. First, a small crystal is formed - a seed. As the molecules stick to the seed, the crystal grows.
I learned that there isthree types of crystal formation: from melts, from solutions and from saturated vapors.
1. An example of crystallization from a melt is the formation of ice from water (after all, water is molten ice), as well as the formation of volcanic rocks.
2. An example of crystallization from solution in nature is the precipitation of hundreds of millions of tons of salt from sea water.
3. Saturated vapors form snowflakes, patterns on glass, frost on tree branches.
Experience 1.
To grow salt crystals, we poured into a glass of not very hot water and began to pour salt into the water 1 teaspoon at a time, stirring so that the salt dissolves faster. Salt was added to the water until it stopped dissolving. When they noticed that the salt did not dissolve anymore, they added the last spoonful. The solution was filtered through a cloth. (It is imperative to filter the solution, since there may be specks or dust particles in the salt, which can adversely affect the growth of the crystal.)
We prepared 2 cups of saturated salt solution, then put the string in them. One glass was left warm, the other was taken out to the balcony, where it was cool. A lot of crystals formed on the thread, it looked beautiful. Those crystals that grew in warmth were more beautiful and grew faster. (Appendix Fig. 3,4,5,6)
Crystals have also grown on a thread above the solution. Apparently, the solution was very saturated, and upon evaporation, the crystals were first adhered to the thread, and then to the pencil to which this thread was tied. It should be noted that above, above the water, the crystals were white, completely opaque, inconspicuous. (Appendix Fig. 1, 2, 7)
Conclusions: 1) crystals can grow by adding new layers, if there is the necessary substance (that is, in order for the crystal to "grow" beautiful, you need to take care of it: remove specks, add a new solution, clean off ugly growths);
2) crystals grow from solutions when water evaporates;
3) the shape of the salt crystals is influenced by temperature.
Experience 2.
Growing sugar crystals. In the Internet ( ) we found a recipe: “Take a quarter of a glass of drinking water and a couple of tablespoons of granulated sugar. On the fire, sugar is brought to dissolve and obtain syrup. Then a little sugar is scattered on a piece of paper, the stick is dipped in syrup and rolled in sugar. It is necessary to make sure that its cubes adhere evenly on all sides of the stick, which will make the crystal even. Therefore, it is better to prepare the sticks ahead of time, for example, in the evening, and leave them to dry throughout the night. Then a saucepan is taken, water is poured into it - two glasses, and sugar is poured out - two and a half glasses. The syrup is put on a small fire and, with constant stirring, all the sugar is dissolved. The remaining sugar is poured into the resulting syrup - two and a half glasses, and cooked until it is completely dissolved. After turning off the heat, the syrup is left on the stove for another 20 minutes. While it cools, sticks are being prepared. Then hot syrup is poured into glasses. It is necessary that it is the hot syrup that is poured, because otherwise the crystals will not grow. The same procedure is done with all the remaining blanks: they are placed in glasses and left to grow for about 7 days. Then the seed is dipped into a solution poured separately, and you should be patient. " The pictures of sugar crystals impressed, we decided to grow the same ones.
Mom and I did everything as described, only instead of sticks we took a thread with a button. For several days we rejoiced at the growing crystals, but after a week everything crumbled. The experience has failed. (Appendix Fig. 8, 9)
Output: Crystals are capricious, they require careful treatment, strict adherence to the recipe and the temperature of the solution when the crystal is immersed for further growth. Apparently, we did not take into account something. We will return to this experience later, in consultation with a chemistry teacher.
Conclusion.
Our hypothesis was confirmed - at home it is really possible to grow crystals of salt and sugar.
Based on the results obtained, the following were made. conclusions .
- Crystals can be obtained from some substances at home, you just need to know how to grow them and you must follow safety precautions when working with substances.
- Crystals are capricious and short-lived. To make the salt crystal look more beautiful, durable and not dry out, it can be covered with colorless varnish
Research results:
We learned to work with books and Internet resources, to learn from them what other people already knew before us;
We mastered some methods of growing crystals in an aqueous solution (I myself managed to grow a crystal of table salt!)
The crystal growth was observed under different conditions.
In the course of the work done, I learnedthat crystals are very beneficial to humans. In some cases, you cannot do without them. For example, if you need to cut a stone, you cannot do without a diamond, and if you need to make a watch, then you cannot do without a ruby.
The topic of growing crystals is very interesting and extensive. I plan to grow crystals from other substances as well. This will be the subject of my next research.

The American weekly "News" reported on the astonishing incident with an American submarine sailing in the "triangle" at a depth of 200 feet (70 m). The sailors heard a strange noise overboard and felt a vibration that lasted for about a minute. And then the whole team ... instantly aged. But the most surprising thing was revealed after surfacing: it turned out that the submarine is located in ... the Indian Ocean, 300 miles from the east coast of Africa and 10 thousand miles from Bermuda!
It is possible that the strange phenomenon occurred under the influence of Atlantean energy crystals, hidden, according to Cayce, at the bottom of the sea east of the island of Andros at a depth of 1,500 meters.
An American hydrological vessel discovered a huge pyramid at the bottom of the Bermuda Triangle - three times the size of the famous Cheops pyramid! Judging by the echoes reflected from its surface, the edges are composed of a material similar to glass or polished ceramics. Surprisingly, they turned out to be absolutely clean and smooth, which is not at all typical for an object located at the bottom of the ocean.
In 1995, University of Minnesota researcher Mark Hammons and his colleague Jeffrey Keith claimed that the Atlanteans were ... aliens that invaded human bodies! The ancient, in many respects mysterious civilization of the Atlanteans left us a huge legacy, and in fact many have not even heard of the once existing and prosperous continent. They don't talk about it either in history lessons in schools or in universities. Meanwhile, in Atlantis, the foundations were created for everything that our civilization is so proud of, that is its essence.

From the messages of those people who are often contemptuously called "contactees". Emeralds and diamonds are crystals. But not all crystals are rare and beautiful. Every single particle of salt or sugar is also a crystal! Many of the most common substances around us are crystals.
People say that the crystal is growing. Why can it grow? After all, this is not a plant. I wondered why a crystal grows, how a person uses it, whether it is possible to grow a crystal and how to do it.
People use crystals in construction, in the production of jewelry, watches, electronic devices, and computer technology. But where to get so many crystals? Is it possible to grow them artificially? I decided to try growing a crystal at home.
Purpose of work: find out what a crystal is and get it at home.

A crystal is usually a solid, but there are also liquid crystals. Every substance is made up of small particles (molecules or atoms). You can call them bricks. Usually in a substance, the bricks are different and are connected to each other in different ways, that is, strange patterns are obtained. And in a crystal, the bricks are the same, they are equally connected to each other, repeated in exactly the same sequence throughout the substance, that is, patterns of the correct shape are obtained. Thanks to this repeating structure, crystals themselves can take on strange and interesting shapes.
Crystals of many minerals and precious stones were known and described several millennia ago. At first, the word "crystal" meant only "ice" in Greek. Then they began to call so transparent crystals of quartz, which is also called rock crystal. People thought that rock crystal is ice that does not melt in the heat. An amazing feature of rock crystal is its smooth, flat edges. There was a hunch that the shape might be related to the internal structure. And then scientists proved that the structure of the crystal has a repeating pattern.
A crystal is a solid state of matter. It has a certain shape and a certain number of faces due to the arrangement of its atoms. All crystals of one substance have the same shape, although they may differ in size.

There are hundreds of substances in nature that form crystals. Water is one of the most common of these. Freezing water turns into ice crystals or snowflakes. Mineral crystals are also formed during certain rock-forming processes. The vast amounts of hot and molten rocks deep underground are actually solutions of minerals. When the masses of these liquid or molten rocks are pushed to the surface of the earth, they begin to cool. They cool very slowly. Some minerals form crystals that can only be seen with a microscope. Others form crystals weighing several kilograms.

The process of formation of minerals in the earth's crust with the participation of hot water and high pressure is called “hydrothermal”, and the solution of minerals, from which they crystallize again upon gradual cooling, is called colloidal.
If the magma is thick enough and the bubble with the solution has not exploded, conditions are created for the gradual cooling and crystallization of minerals. As soon as the magma cools down a little, the colloidal solution solidifies layer by layer. First, minerals with a higher melting point are deposited on the walls of the cavity. In our geode, this is a yellow-gray opaque or translucent silicon, a kind of quartz with a cryptocrystalline structure. Then chalcedony is deposited in the form of a white opaque "crust", behind which crystallizes agate, a translucent variety of quartz. Agate is now often called not the mineral itself, but a striped concentric pattern formed by layers of different minerals. If the temperature is changed several times, chalcedony and agate form several layers, the sequence of which depends on whose “turn” to crystallize at the given temperature
The growth of the geode is completed by crystals of pure quartz: transparent rock crystal, smoky topaz, purple amethyst. It all depends on the content and variety of acidic residues of metals and the concentration of minerals in the solution.
Over time, the upper layer of rocks is destroyed, dense and weathering-resistant secretions are crumbled into open deposits.
Growing artificial crystals interested people back in the 9th century. And above all, precious minerals were of interest: ruby and sapphire. These minerals are now produced in millions of carats every year!
They are produced from melts, from solutions, from gas, but of course, each mineral has its own method of production, its own technological feature. (This feature is associated with such a variety of minerals in nature!)

If we briefly describe the process of artificially growing stone crystals, then the initial raw material (for example, ugly, destroyed quartz) is destroyed in alkali to a molecular state and then a perfectly regular transparent crystal is created from silica molecules. This is done using special seeds. Seeds for growing artificial minerals are transparent thin, elongated plates made from the same synthetic crystals. In this case, the appropriate temperature, pressure, and concentration of the solution are necessarily controlled. The slightest deviation from the specified parameters - and the crystal will be hopelessly damaged! Another important condition for growing artificial stones is the temperature difference between the bottom and top of the container where they grow. In this case, there is a transfer of molecules in solution and their entry to the seeds.
Artificial precious and semi-precious stones, for example, amethysts, grown at the factory, are no different from their famous Ural and Brazilian counterparts: neither in appearance nor in structure.
Crystal Geode Egg
I was very interested in the crystals that grow in a geode, and I decided to grow crystals in an eggshell. This will be my Easter craft.
I needed:
shell from an empty egg, burnt alum, white glue, brush, glass dish, paint for Easter eggs, hot water, stick and spoon, sheet of paper.
How did:
1. Blown a large white chicken egg. Split it lengthwise into two halves. She carried out this "jewelry" action by cutting it with small scissors. I made sure the inside of the shell is dry and clean. Prepared everything you need (photo 1 of the application)
2. Using a brush, I applied white glue to the inner surface of both egg halves and edges, and sprinkled alum on the entire inner surface covered with glue. Dried the shells (photo 2)
3. The next day I prepared a solution for growing crystals in a glass jar: I stirred a full package of dye with a stick in 2 glasses of very hot (almost boiling water) water. Add ¾ cup alum powder to the hot dye solution and stir until completely dissolved. When the alum was completely dissolved, I allowed the solution to cool (about 30 minutes), and then I dipped one half of the dried egg, covered with glue and alum, into the bottom of the dish, with the inside facing up. 4. Put the dish in a safe place overnight. Crystals love to grow alone. The longer the shell is in water, the larger the crystals in the geode will be.
5. A day later, I carefully took the geode out of the solution, the wet crystals are quite fragile. If I wanted to grow large crystals, I would leave the geode in solution for a few more days. (Photo 6)
6. I put the geode on a piece of paper and waited until it was completely dry. (photo 7)

Conclusion
Crystals have a clear, repeating structure, they are solid and liquid. They occur naturally and can be grown by humans. Beautiful crystals are formed when the crystallization of atoms and molecules of a substance into patterns of regular shape occurs very slowly. The crystal grows because water from a saturated solution gradually evaporates, and the crystalline substance passes from a liquid state to a solid state, since the "bricks" (atoms and molecules) are attracted to each other and independently take their place in the repeating structure.
Crystals are very beneficial to humans. In some cases, you cannot do without them. For example, if you need to cut a stone, you cannot do without a diamond, and if you need to make a watch, then you cannot do without a ruby. Microprocessors in computers are made of silicon, and without liquid crystal displays, we can no longer imagine any electronic device. It is very difficult to find the required crystal in nature. It is much easier and cheaper to grow it artificially. This is done industrially. But you can also grow a crystal at home.
Conclusions:
1. My experiment showed that the crystal can be grown at home.
2. It is necessary to use gloves, as the dye is very difficult to wash off the hands
3. As a result of the experiment, I was convinced that the crystals are very fragile and must be varnished to protect them from destruction.

Crystals are capricious, require careful attitude to them, adherence to the recipe and the temperature of the solution when the crystal is immersed for further growth. Otherwise, a crystal that has been patiently and for a long time can disappear before our eyes in a few minutes! But, on the other hand, if everything is done correctly, patiently and carefully, the grown crystal will delight you with its beauty, unusual shape, color, size!
The study of crystals cannot be accommodated in this work, it deserves more attention! This is what I plan to do in the future.
