Foreign passports and documents

And what sea is Marmaris. Which sea in Marmaris is the Mediterranean or the Aegean? Marmaris is the confluence of two seas. Rest in Marmaris. Beaches. Which is better

Once they gave me good advice: if you are going on vacation, take twice as much money and half as much things as originally planned. I try to follow this rule, but it does not always work out - although I know for sure that out of five pairs of shoes I will wear only two, as a rule, I do not have free space in my suitcase. But one piece of advice I always follow - before the trip, you should thoroughly rummage on the Internet, because the best vacation is just a vacation that meets expectations.

This time I chose Marmaris. But even after reading the reviews and buying a ticket, I still could not understand why many people love Marmaris so much and return there again and again?

I realized this when our plane landed at Dalaman airport. It's all about the special energy of this place, which is difficult to describe, but very easy to feel.

First, Dalaman, an airport city (90% of residents work there), is very small, but quite beautiful. Then the transfer was not boring at all, because the nature in this region is simply wonderful. After Bodrum, which is poor in vegetation (and I really love this city), the surroundings of Marmaris seem to be just paradise bushes, and very much like our Black Sea coast. However, in Turkey I am constantly visited by "deja vu", so I like to relax there, as in a well-known place.

Marmaris is considered by many to be one of the most beautiful cities on the coast. Probably, this more refers not to the city itself, but to the territory around it. Mountains, lush greenery, generous tropical vegetation, stunning scent of pine trees and flowers - this is really very beautiful.

And Marmaris itself is very simple, comfortable and carefree. Of course, there were other times in its history, one name "mimar as - to hang an architect" is worth what, but when was it? Today everything here is arranged so as to rest and not think about anything. Twelve-kilometer embankment, and 3-4 blocks from it. Hotels, hostels, apartments ... Residential areas - the population of Marmaris is about 27 thousand people. Orange dolmush goes to Icmeler, blue and green ones run along Marmaris to Siteler and Armutalan. That's all.

From the mandatory resort schedule, I immediately crossed out the purchase of souvenirs, and spent this time studying city hotels. Honestly, I didn't like any of them enough to want to look at it from the inside. But I realized that it is also very easy to decide on hotels in Marmaris. Closer to the city center there are hotels with a small territory, the beaches are small, the noise and dirt from the small shops and the sea is not so clean, but Barov Street is close. In Siteler, the territory near the hotels is a little larger, the sea is cleaner and quieter at night. Between Marmaris and Icmeler are well-kept five-star hotels. And Icmeler himself, for some reason, strongly reminded me of the spirit and level of Bodrum and pleased me with more spacious beaches.

Most of the hotels in Marmaris are urban type and do not have a large territory. In truth, the entire area of the hotel is often limited by the width of the building, which houses a small pool and a few tables. The beach area owned by the hotel is almost the same size. Some hotels, for example, the Royal Mares, have a rooftop swimming pool, the Villa Sol pool, which we are actively promoting as one of the most inexpensive hotels, is approximately 3 * 3 in size and is sandwiched between two buildings. Or there is a busy road right by the hotel fence, from the pool you can watch the passing cars. In general, the buildings are very dense, the hotels are very close to each other, and this, in my opinion, is one of the disadvantages. More or less decent territory at "Lydia", "Grand Azura" (5 stars after all), "Tropical", a fairly large pool at the "Flamingo", and perhaps that's all.
A few words about the hotel in which we lived - "Tropical". There was not a single openly negative review about this hotel, which is why we chose it. I liked the hotel so much that we will probably stay there again on our next visit. The rest turned out to be so serene and hassle-free - the rooms are good, the food is wonderful, the staff is polite, the territory is very beautiful, even on the beach there is room to turn around. And we were lucky with the number - initially they took a room with a view of the city, but it was the first from the corner and therefore the view from our balcony opened directly onto the bay of Marmaris. I also liked the location - "Tropical" is located at the end of Marmaris, in Siteler. Of course, people come to Marmaris not to stay in a hotel, but it is so good when minor hotel problems do not interfere with your rest.

Here the Aegean and Mediterranean seas merge, mountain rivers flow into the sea nearby, so the water is quite cool. But in the closed bay of Marmaris, there are almost no waves. The farther from the Old Town and the port, the better the sea, and overall very good. But if you want the sea, as in the picture, you can go on a yacht tour around the Aegean Islands or visit the bays closest to Marmaris. These tours are offered daily by all agencies, ranging from $ 35 at the Riviera to $ 17 at street agencies. The excursion is not historical, a guide is not needed there, so we bought it from the “No name” agency and did not regret it.

A yacht tour is five or six stops on small uninhabited islands in the Aegean Sea. The sea in this area shimmers with all shades of blue, turquoise, azure; in some bays, the water has a unique emerald hue and it is a real pleasure to swim there.

The most interesting is Kozlov Island. The goats are really there - well-groomed, long-haired and arrogant. Demandingly looking into the eyes of visiting tourists, the goats gallop at the pier and, apparently, do not experience problems with food - two or three yachts dock on the island a day, which means that there is always food. The donkey, on the other hand, looks very dry and sad. Probably, they do not share with him ... Goats. At the top of the island is a dilapidated church said to belong to the Byzantine period. It is unlikely that these ruins are of great historical value, but, my God, what a delightful view of the sea and neighboring islands opens up from there ... I even dreamed a little how it would be nice to settle in such a place. In general, on this walk there are many places where you want to stay longer - a sandy beach under the pine trees, the whitest pebbles in a secluded corner among the rocks, and everywhere there is an unrealistically beautiful and stunningly clear sea.
“Everything has changed in Marmaris, both the weather and business,” the team complains. “We used to take 70 people on board, but now we are barely 40”. I sympathize, of course, but from my point of view, 40 is better than 70. At least, you can safely move around the boat without being afraid to step on someone.

In addition to this excursion (I would go on it at least every day, honestly), buses leave from Marmaris to Ephesus and Pamukkale (only 3 hours away), a fun tour of Dalyan-Kaunos (if you are lucky, you will see a turtle), rafting and a country tour, safari in jeeps .. True, I did not manage to go to Olya Deniz and Fethiye - an excursion only once a week from the Riviera, so next time I will probably go straight there. NB: gorgeous photos of Pamukkale - snow-white travertine baths with blue water, which we are tempted by advertising brochures - were made 15 years ago. According to reviews and in the photo today, this miracle of nature does not look so luxurious at all, although it is impressive. It looks like I was hopelessly late in Pamukkale.

And what pleases me: Marmaris is almost ours. There are very few English and Dutch, except perhaps in Icmeler, almost no Germans. The Turks somehow confusedly explained that it became not so profitable for the Europeans to travel to Turkey, there was something with the exchange rate. So what, our life is not the easiest either, but it was the inhabitants of Russia and the former CIS who filled Marmaris this year. The staff is hastily learning Russian, Russian is spoken everywhere - on the beach, in a restaurant, in a supermarket. After Bodrum, Marmaris pleasantly surprised me with its democratic prices. So if you want to please yourself with unpretentious shopping - there is a shopping center "Gima", as well as supermarkets "Tanzash" and "Migros" - prices for things of similar brands are much cheaper than ours.

As usual, all the counters in the shops are littered with Turkish "big-eyed" souvenirs, and I have long given up the idea of finding something unusual there. I bring home a pasta of olives and olives and sweet chestnuts (no one can look at them anymore, but I love). Sold in any supermarket. By the way, it is also better to buy Turkish delight by weight there, it is much tastier and fresher than the one that is sold in shops along the embankment and stands in boxes for a long time under the scorching sun. I wanted to bring a jersey of some club from Marmaris. I saw only orange and green in the Green House, but for a minute I imagined myself in it, I got scared and I didn't buy it.

Good among my own, but .. I needed a sunbed. The beach-boy (although it is strange to call a man well over 40 "a fight") went to a lady of about fifty, who immediately grabbed a couple. "She is Russian, now we will ask her."
--Are you alone?
The lady looked at him without expression
- Are you alone? - I immediately translated.
“Not rosumia,” she said affectionately.

I was so stunned that I forgot what I came for. The phrase “Madame, when you were my age, Russian was the state language in our country” was spinning in my head, as well as barbaric plans to get up early tomorrow and book a dozen sun loungers at once. I thought a lot, including thoughts that were completely unnecessary on vacation about the country we had lost.
However, Marmaris is not a place where you can bother for a long time. Here you have to bask in the sun, jump from a yacht into the emerald sea, run after turtles, light up the disco until the morning and much more. And no regrets.
By the way, two days later they brought new sunbeds and placed metal ones by the pool. Well done - you can't just lie down in the heat, you definitely need a mattress, and we have to pay for them. We multiply 2 lira by the number of guests and the number of days in the season, such is the business ... All ingenious is simple.

“Marmaris was a fishing village, and then all of a sudden the fish for some reason left,” the guide said seriously and sadly. For some reason ... If I were a fish, I would have rushed en masse along the western coast somewhere in the Kusadas region, it is calmer there. Be that as it may, in noisy Marmaris, you can still try fresh sea fish, however, there is not much choice - sea bass or sea bass, and I generally saw stuffed mussels only on Barov Street at night and in my opinion they were somewhat small. They don't bother with cooking either - they just fried on a wire rack or frying pan. The fish is served with the freshest pita bread with sesame seeds and oil with garlic and herbs, or toast with olive oil with spices and always lemon. As I say, all ingenious is simple. Somehow it so happened that it was in Marmaris that I managed to taste Turkish fruits and regret that we don't have such - fragrant peaches, no, it's not even peaches, it's just "cheftali", magnificent strawberries, even banal oranges, lopsided and ugly, tasted delicious.

But I was not lucky with wine. After reading on the Internet about the volcanic soil of Cappadocia, which gives rise to amazing grape varieties, from which wonderful wine is later made, I was very disappointed. Wine and Wine. In addition, the last glass of ruby "Antika" tipped over on my white dress (and no need to drink when the thermometer is about 40). I rejected attempts to shower me with salt, the offer to change into the clothes I immediately found and successfully, as it seemed to me, disguised all this disgrace of the pareo. But the owner of the restaurant was so kind that he didn't even include wine in the bill - "well, as if nothing happened, because you didn't drink anything." The blackberry wine I wanted so badly tasted like Forest Berry shampoo. I was not impressed by Villa Doluja, and simply Doluja, and the Tellibag, bought out of desperation - I did not notice much difference between them. In general, I won't be a sommelier, that's for sure.

But be that as it may, Marmaris is a delight for the eyes and taste. As for the rest .. Welcome to the famous Barov street. Small digression: I love going to football. And not because I like to watch 22 guys chase one ball. There, you know, such emotions - frantic energy, adrenaline, the real taste of victory, the sincere bitterness of defeat ... This is the same adrenaline - on Barov Street. Everyone is wildly having fun, from one in the morning people get excited, two dance floors are already small and people dance at the tables, at three - on the tables, and so on. Particularly amusing are the attempts to get to know each other in the roar and smoke (and what, some succeed)). The clubs themselves (the most famous of them are BackStreet, Green House, Areena, CrazyDazy) are nothing special. Well, the music is different, well, somewhere it is more convenient or the air conditioner works better ... Everything is very democratic, including prices, a couple of transvestites, show girls, smoke, fire and sparkles ... but the energy is real! And what a! The roar of music drowns out the rustle of the sea, the night sky is colored with laser advertising of clubs, the embankment is filled with people - someone is returning to the hotel, someone's nightlife is just beginning. I don't know how I suddenly got so much energy in Marmaris, probably this is the place. Maybe it is for this - to feel the rhythm of life - that they come back here again and again?
In general, if you just want to relax - in the place where the Aegean Sea merges with the Mediterranean, among the mountains and pine forests, there is a wonderful town of Marmaris ...

Very good review. This year we are going to Turkey for the first time. I choose between Marmaris and Ichmer, it seems to be close, but judging by the reviews, there is a difference. Probably, it will still be Marmaris.

I myself am a Russian and have been living in Ukraine for 11 years. I will say that there is western and eastern Ukraine, and so the West hates Russians and the East, and the East loves Russia and secretly dreams of reuniting and treats Ukrainians from the West exactly. This is how Ukraine lives - the west and the east endure each other! And the fact that the West does not understand the Russian language is a feigned show! And the story is good in Marmaris we will definitely visit as a family, I wonder if there is something there for children?

Great review, thank you very much for the details! Regarding the insurance from the travel agency, I was in Egypt, took a diving excursion, so before entering the sea, I signed that the agency was not responsible for much that could happen to me there. "street distributor", on the Dead Sea, where the parking was supposed to be 30 minutes. We stood for more than an hour because waited for one woman who probably admired the beauty .... so the whole bus offered to leave her and pick her up on the way back, so the guide replied: - "For me, every tourist is like a child, you leave your child in a foreign place ??? ??? " and went to look for her, and connected everyone he could to the search!

Marmaris is recognized as the most environmentally friendly resort in the Mediterranean. Numerous beaches, picturesque lagoons and mountain ranges covered with pine forests have made it one of the most popular holiday destinations in Turkey.

Rest in Marmaris will pleasantly surprise you with the opportunity provided by nature to swim in two seas - the Mediterranean and the Aegean, because it is here that the border between them passes. The countless colorful restaurants, discos and cafes located along the embankment will impress gourmets, and connoisseurs of the elegant will find an endless series of shops and shops selling carpets and products of local artisans.

Marmaris is also famous for its twelve-kilometer promenade that stretches along the entire resort and the famous By the street of bars... Here you can find entertainment for every taste. Unlimited possibilities for practicing all kinds of sports, two water parks.

Marmaris is not suitable for a relaxing holiday, and those who want peace are better off looking at Icmeler, which is a 5-minute drive away. Previously, Icmeler was considered part of Marmaris, but today it is an independent popular resort. Translated from Turkish, Icmeler means “lost paradise”. There is a 13 km promenade from Marmaris to Icmeler. All beaches are located behind this promenade, even if the hotel is on the beach and the beach belongs to it. But you can take a leisurely stroll along the sea from the city center to any hotel within this zone. During the season, minibuses from the center to Icmelar run almost until 4 am - there is no problem to get to the hotel if you had enough entertainment before that time.

How to get there

In summer, direct charters fly from Moscow to Dalaman Airport (from May to September). The road from Dalaman airport to Marmaris will take about 1.5 hours. The only airline operating regular flights to Dalaman, Turkish Airlines, flies from all Russian airports only from Moscow Domodedovo; a flight from Moscow to Dalaman with a transfer in Istanbul will cost from $ 299 plus airport taxes. From other cities of Russia you will have to fly through Moscow and Istanbul or, during the tourist season, use charters - not to Dalaman itself or not very distant Bodrum, but to Antalya, where, by the way, there are not only charter, but also regular flights: Pulkovo Airlines ”From St. Petersburg (from $ 340 plus taxes), Aeroflot from Moscow (from $ 260 plus taxes). From Antalya to Marmaris - more than 300 kilometers. The path is not short, but the mountain road is beautiful: rocks, gorges, valleys and fat white sheep on green slopes. If you book a yacht from a charter company, they will provide a transfer of $ 30 per person.

Population

The population of Marmaris grows from 15,000 in winter to 75,000 in summer, thanks to the availability of hotels and tourism.

Location

Marmaris is the pearl of the Aegean coast, located on the southwestern coast of Turkey, in the area where the Mediterranean and Aegean seas join.

Climate

The climate in Marmaris is typical Mediterranean. The average January temperature is about 7.5 degrees with rain and sleet. The absolute minimum is only -4. In the spring, it is already +15 +25, but the water only warms up to +20 in May, which is still quite cold for swimming. In summer, the temperature hovers around +40. The maximum temperature was fixed at +48. In autumn in September and October it is no longer so hot - on average +30 and water +25 +28.

City `s history

Marmaris was founded in the 6th century BC and was named Fiskos. Already in those years, it was famous for its trading traditions. In 334 BC. NS. Fiskos was conquered by the army of Alexander the Great. It then became part of the Byzantine Empire. Then the city was captured by the Seljuks, and later by the Ottomans. In the 16th century, Sultan Suleiman restored the already destroyed walls of the city, built in ancient times, and gave the city the name Mimaris, which later turned into Marmaris.

The only reminder of the city's past is the Fortress, erected during the Ottoman rule. This is the business card of Marmaris. The fortress "Marmara Kalesi", around which the old town with its colorful oriental bazaar and large harbor is located, is very impressive for visiting tourists.

sights

Marmaris stands still the ancient city of Fiskos... Today Fiskos occupies only the top of a hill in the northern part of Marmaris and bears the name Ashartepe... Archaeological excavations are still being carried out on its territory, revealing more and more ancient monuments to the world.

The main attraction of Marmaris is ancient fortress, built during the heyday of the Ottoman Empire by Sultan Suleiman the Magnificent. According to Herodotus, the fortress was built by the Ionians in 3000 BC. The Ministry of Culture turned the fortress into a museum. In the very center of the peninsula, a stone tower rises, surrounded by strong battlements.

In Marmaris, as in many Turkish cities, it has been preserved Old city... One of the oldest monuments in Marmaris is Bedestin, or "covered market", which testifies to the ancient and rather rich history of the city. Also in the old town you can see Caravanserai, built in 1545 and intended for the Ottoman warriors. The caravanserai consists of one large and seven small rooms, which now house souvenir shops.

Another attraction of Marmaris - Ibrahim Mosque... Built in 1789, the mosque is a traditional example of Ottoman architecture.

The sights of the city also include Tashkhan, which in translation means "Stone Inn", as well as an aqueduct. Both structures were built in 1522.

On the northeastern hill of Marmaris - Tomb of Sariana- a wise righteous woman who lived in the 16th century and became widely known for her prophecies. Even today, you can see local women coming to the tomb for advice.

Not far from Marmaris is Cleopatra Island... If you believe the legends, then it was here, by order of Mark Antony, that white sand was specially delivered.

At the hotels of Marmaris, you will also be offered excursions to Pammukale - "Cotton Castle", where the waters of thermal springs, rich in mineral salts, have formed snow-white limestone terraces over the millennia of their existence; Ephesus - one of the most ancient Hellenic colonial cities in Asia Minor, founded in the 11th century BC, where the Blessed Virgin Mary the Mother of God spent the last days of her life; to the Greek island of Rhodes; in Dalyan, Ituzu Beach is the second largest breeding ground for Mediterranean sea turtles of the endangered Caretta species; rafting on a mountain river and many others.

Marmaris is one of the largest natural bays in the world. Modern seaport "Marina" has 3414 registered yachts, 640 of them are foreign. Marmaris is often called "Yacht Paradise". An international regatta is held in Marmaris once a year.

  • Last Minute Tours to Turkey

Marmaris is one of the best resorts in Turkey, it is considered the most "European" in the country. The fact is that not so long ago the main contingent of vacationers here consisted of the British and the Dutch, who, as you know, know a lot about quality rest. Several unconditional advantages of this resort helped them to make a choice in favor of Marmaris.

Connectivity and Wi-Fi

All is well with mobile communication in Marmaris. There are several mobile operators, each of which offers a choice of tariffs for tourists. A minute of conversation with Russia and other European countries will cost approximately 3 to 6 TRY. The function of sending SMS abroad is not provided for by all tariffs, you need to clarify separately.

Tourists are offered prepaid tariffs with the possibility of replenishment. SIM cards and payment cards are sold at the offices of mobile operators, supermarkets, newsstands and at Dalaman Airport.

Since July 12, 2005, the use of non-Turkish mobile phones with Turkish SIM cards has been restricted. The phone must be registered at the entrance to the country at the customs service within 30 days, or the term of using the SIM card will be no more than 2 weeks. After this time, the phone for Turkish SIM cards will be blocked.

Wi-Fi is available in almost all hotels. In the lobby it is usually free, in the rooms it is paid - 17-35 TRY per day, but the speed, especially in budget hotels, leaves much to be desired. In cafes and restaurants, Wi-Fi is usually free and at a decent speed, here and there you need to enter a password, which will be provided with any order.

Mobile Internet can be connected when buying a SIM card, 4 GB of traffic at a good speed will cost about 100 TRY. There are Internet cafes in Marmaris, but there are not many of them, and they usually serve as a hobby club for local teenagers who play shooting games. It can be uncomfortable and smoky there, but it is quite suitable for urgent access. The cost of an hour is 3.5-7 TRY.

Marmaris beaches

The beaches in Marmaris occupy the entire coastline from the center of the resort to Icmeler. The coastal strip is not wide and is separated by a road from the street with cafes, restaurants and hotels. All beaches are sandy with a gentle entrance to the sea, equipped with changing cabins and toilets.

The municipal city beach is not clean and is quite crowded. But the beaches of Icmeler (7 km west of Marmaris) and the beaches of the northern side of the Jennet Peninsula and Kumlubuk Bay are cleaner. Turunca Bay has been awarded the Blue Flag. The Uzunyali area between Marmaris and Icmeler is also popular for its beach and long promenade. Another beach worth visiting is Orhaniye village. It is notable for the 600 m long Kizkumu spit, which divides the bay into two parts. Even if you go far, the depth will be very shallow.

Many beaches in Marmaris are owned by hotels, entrance and sun loungers with umbrellas for guests are free. On municipal beaches, sun loungers and umbrellas are conditionally free: you will have to buy a drink at the beach bar. The same scheme works if you want to visit the hotel's private beach without being a guest. As for the wild beaches, the most famous is the Uzunyali beach, located between Marmaris and Icmeler. It is very beautiful there, and there are practically no people.

Diving

There are about 50 dive sites in and around Marmaris, teeming with ancient ruins. The main places for diving are: Cape Kutyuk, Jennet Island, Kadirga lighthouse and Kargy island, Sary-Mehmet cape, lighthouse on Kechi island, Inje Burun lighthouse on Ildyz island, Khaitly cape, Abdi Reis bay, Yazikh rock, Aksu bay. The marine life is represented here by sardines, tuna, octopus, crayfish, moray eels, and cardinal fish. Some dive sites contain amphora fragments.

One of the most popular diving spots is Basa Cave. Experienced divers may find it bored here, but fans of underwater photography will love it: it is very beautiful here.

Diving centers offer both individual and group dives. The cost of two dives for 20-30 minutes is on average from 100 TRY per person. This amount includes instruction, instructor support, diving itself, insurance and rental of a complete set of equipment. Those who wish can take a diving course and receive a PADI certificate - such an opportunity is available in most dive centers (you need to check in advance).

Hotels in Marmaris

Marmaris is considered a youth resort where life is in full swing day and night. Hotels designed for "party-goers" are located directly at the resort, from where you can easily and quickly get to bars and discos. Club hotels with a vast territory are located either beyond Marmaris in the nearest villages of Hisaronu or Turunc, or in the park area between Marmaris and Icmeler. They have both buildings and bungalows. Hotels located outside the city are more family-friendly. There, as a rule, there is a large area with various entertainment infrastructure, including playgrounds, swimming pools, etc.

Most of the hotels in Marmaris are urban-type: four- and six-storey buildings. Many city hotels operate on a half-board basis, in family and club hotels the all-inclusive system is more common. A night in a five-star hotel in Marmaris will cost from 80 USD for a double room, in a four-star hotel - 50-100 USD, and a budget "three-ruble note" can be charged from 20 USD per day for a double room.

Shopping

Going to Marmaris for branded clothing and shoes is not a good idea. The choice is not great even in shopping centers, prices are high, and there are many fakes.

It makes sense to bring local leather and suede products (jackets, belts, bags and wallets), ceramics, gold and silver jewelry, hookahs, figurines, wooden souvenirs from Marmaris. Keep in mind that you are unlikely to buy any rare antiques in Marmaris. And if the seller claims the opposite and demands suspiciously big money for his goods, ask for a certificate confirming the authenticity of the product.

Shopping centers

In the very historical center of the city, next to the fortress, there is the Charshi shopping center - one of the largest in the city. Here you can buy clothes, shoes, fabrics, handmade lace, silk products, bath accessories, cosmetics, sweets, souvenirs and much more at low prices. Another large shopping center is located in Netsel Marina (city yacht port). There are international and local brands of clothing and footwear, souvenirs and jewelry, as well as all kinds of maritime-themed goods.

In addition to Turkish sweets, Marmaris is famous for its many varieties of honey: from banal floral to thyme "virgin honey" - all this is sold in grocery supermarkets. The largest of them - Tansas - is located in front of the marina at the end of the main street of the city. Not far from Armutalan there is another excellent supermarket - Kipa. There you can buy local products as well as “sanctioned” cheeses from Italy.

Markets

The central covered market of Marmaris is a very colorful place. It sells leather, suede products, jewelry made of copper, bronze, onyx products, distinctive Turkish carpets, fabrics, embroidery, paintings, colorful souvenirs, local kambali honey with a pine scent, fresh vegetables and fruits, all kinds of products of Turkish artisans and much other. The bazaar occupies an entirely two-level building, is open on Thursdays and Sundays, traditionally by the evening prices are significantly reduced.

In all eastern countries, it is customary to bargain on the market. This is not only an opportunity to save money, but also a ritual of courtesy: refusing to bargain, you risk offending the seller. So feel free to ask for a price that is half the offered price.

Marmaris cuisine and restaurants

Marmaris is a city of international gastronomy. The most diverse cuisines of the world are presented here: traditional Turkish, Italian, German, Chinese, etc. The proximity to the sea provides an abundance of fish restaurants, as a rule, all of them are concentrated in the area of the pier, and are also often open at hotels. The most authentic and non-touristy Turkish restaurants can be found in the shopping arcade. Well, the historic center has it all: Italian pizzerias, Chinese noodle shops and much more.

Turkish restaurants serve beef and lamb with spices, especially iskender kebab - lamb in tomato sauce according to a special recipe, as well as lentil soup “merjimek chorbasy”. In almost all eateries you can find “meze” - many small portions of various cold snacks. As for desserts, traditional baklava and Turkish delight are served almost everywhere. Marmaris is famous for its honey, so you should definitely try all the sweets with honey.

Lunch at an inexpensive kebab or other eatery will cost approximately TRY 20 per person, and dinner at a restaurant starts from TRY 85 for two, including local wine.

Entertainment, excursions and attractions

The sights of Marmaris are, first of all, ancient ruins and historical monuments, as well as numerous natural beauties.

One of the main places of interest in the city is the fortress. Marmaris is located very well, so it is not surprising that from time to time someone aggressively claimed it. In 1522, by the decree of Suleiman the Magnificent, a fortress was erected around the city, which protected it from enemies and has been well preserved to this day.

The Kale Castle houses the Marmaris City Museum. The castle itself is supposedly built by the Ionians in 1044 BC. uh, and he's curious in and of itself. The exposition of the museum tells about the history of these places; here are collected ancient documents and ancient household items and art of people who have inhabited Marmaris since ancient times.

A famous monument of the Ottoman era is the caravanserai of the Sultan of Hafsa, built in 1545 on a narrow street leading to the castle. Previously, this place served as a roadside hotel for travelers and soldiers, but today these painted arches house souvenir shops and cafes of national cuisine.

Surroundings of Marmaris

Many excursions are organized from Marmaris: to the so-called Cleopatra Island (Sedir Island), the ruins of the ancient city of Kedrai and the famous Cleopatra beach; to Pamukkale with its 17 geothermal springs inscribed on the UNESCO World Heritage List; the ancient city of Ephesus and the turtle island of Dalyan.

Sedir Island is located 16 km north of Marmaris and is notable for its beach, where, according to locals, Cleopatra herself bathed. According to legend, the sand was brought to the beach by ships from North Africa. From the ancient city of Kedrai on the island of Sedir, the ruins of the city walls and a theater have been preserved.

Dalyan Island is located 80 km southeast of Marmaris and is famous for its largest turtle rookery and medicinal mud baths and beaches. There are also the ruins of the ancient city of Kaunos. It was founded in the 4th century BC. e., and today the terraces of the temple, the theater, the seaport of Agora and the Roman baths have been preserved.

The picturesque Gokova Bay is 30 km north of Marmaris, the town of Datca is to the west, and Lake Keicheiz is located in the east. Gokova Bay is famous for its landscapes - hills overgrown with pine trees and numerous bays with crystal clear turquoise water. At the very coastline at the foot of the hills is the village of Akyaka.

Not far from Marmaris, in the small village of Orhaniye, there is another very beautiful place - the Kyz-Kumu spit. Many sad legends are associated with it, but in fact it is a very picturesque sandy coast.

6 things to do in Marmaris

Marmaris for children

In general, Marmaris is more suitable for youth parties. However, there are many hotels for family holidays - with playgrounds and animation, sandy beaches with a gentle entrance to the sea. In general, the resort is not rich with children's entertainment, but there are two water parks and attractions in shopping centers.

The largest water park in Marmaris - Aqua Dream - is located behind the Migros supermarket and occupies an area of 44 thousand square meters. m (office site). There are a lot of various slides, including those for extreme sports, so that adults will not be bored either. There are several pools, cafes and a bowling alley. Entrance - 14 TRY. The second water park - Atlantis - is a little smaller, stands right on the seashore (office site). You can reach it on a turquoise dolmush towards Icmeler. If you buy a tour, it usually includes a pick-up from your hotel. The water park has 9 slides, a swimming pool with an artificial wave, a "paddling pool" for the little ones and several cafes. Entrance fee is TRY 12.50.

There are many playgrounds in the resort, but one of the best is the one behind the Ataturk monument. The shopping centers have children's entertainment areas with attractions, and in the summer a small amusement park opens in the city center.

Compared to humid Antalya, the climate in Marmaris is drier, so it is quite comfortable here for those who suffer from pulmonary diseases. Even the July and August heat is easily tolerated here. In winter, sometimes there is a subzero temperature, but frosts are rare, sometimes it rains with sleet. The season starts here in May and lasts until the end of October. Water for a good beach holiday warms up by June and remains warm until early November.

In the place where the Mediterranean merges with the Aegean, in a cozy bay surrounded by sandy beaches, there is a Turkish city, which today is very popular with tourists -. The first mentions of him in written historical sources date back to the 6th century BC. BC: at that time the city was called Fiskos. In ancient times, a trade route passed through it, connecting Egypt, Rhodes and Anatolia. At different times, Fiskos was ruled by Alexander the Great, the Seljuks, the Ottomans. It received its modern name in the years when it was ruled by Sultan Suleiman the Magnificent.

The 70s of the XX century were marked by the development of a full-fledged resort area in Marmaris. The intention of the Turkish authorities to make the city attractive to tourists was well founded. Marmaris is located on the shores of a warm, calm sea, the air is fresh and clean, the sandy beaches are truly magnificent. A significant part of the territory of the city, which has become a resort, received the status of a protected area, which made it possible to preserve the pristine nature of these places.

The natural and climatic attractiveness of Marmaris was supplemented by a modern tourist infrastructure, which very quickly gave a result: for several decades, vacation in Marmaris has remained a favorite pastime of travelers from various countries. Russians are no exception to this rule: tours to Marmaris are in high demand among our compatriots. There are no prerequisites for a decrease in this demand: experts predict that holidays in Marmaris in 2014 will be just as popular. The city of Marmaris is located in a picturesque bay, at the confluence of two seas: the Mediterranean and the Aegean, surrounded on all sides by hills and mountains with lush vegetation.

Marmaris - Turkish pearl
View of Mrmaris at the entrance to the city

The exact date of the founding of Marmaris is not known, mentions of the city of Fiskos, which was on the site of Marmaris and was part of Caria, date back to the 11th century BC. During its many centuries of history, the city belonged to the Persians, the Romans, and Byzantium, and in 1424 it was annexed to the Ottoman Empire.

Until the 80s of the last century, Marmaris remained just a small fishing village, until French tourists came here from the neighboring island of Rhodes, who were delighted with the nature, sea and climate in this wonderful place and considered Marmaris an ideal destination for tourism. Soon the first 4-star hotel in Marmaris "Lydia" was built. Since then, Marmaris began to develop rapidly and now it is a mecca for fun lovers and young people from different countries, a kind of Turkish Ibiza 😎

About the name itself Marmaris city there are several versions. The first version says that the name of the city comes from the phrase "Marmara as", which translates as "Hang an architect", and this phrase was uttered by the Sultan the Magnificent, who arrived in the city and saw a poorly built fortress. According to the second version, the name of the city comes from the ancient Greek word "Shining, shiny" or "Sea Pearl"... I prefer the second version of the origin of the name of the city of Marmaris, do you? Indeed, in fact, Marmaris is a real pearl of Turkey.

Marmaris is still the most European of the major resorts in Turkey. Although every year more and more Russian tourists visit Marmaris, there are still a lot more foreigners here than in other resorts in Turkey. Especially the British and the Dutch have chosen Marmaris. Foreigners also like to buy real estate here (a nice apartment with two bedrooms and a sea view can be bought for 70 thousand euros) and park their yachts and boats in the marina - the port of Marmaris.

Beaches and sea in Marmaris

Marmaris is located in a bay and you will not see the open sea here! Consider this when choosing Marmaris for relaxation, I love open space for a beach vacation! For me, the sea is not the sea if I see the opposite shore.

The beach in Marmaris is located in an almost closed bay
Marmaris bay

Because of this feature of Marmaris (a beach in an almost closed bay), boat and yacht excursions along the bays and into the open sea are very common here. The cost of the excursion is not big at all - 10-15 dollars per person with lunch.

Excursions on yachts and boats are very popular in Marmaris
Here is one suggestion for a boat trip
Excursions by boat along the bays in Marmaris

Due to the fact that Marmaris is located in a bay, the sea water is very calm, there are never strong waves here.

The coastline in Marmaris is narrow, the beaches are small, the sun loungers are close to each other. The sand on the beach in Marmaris is gray. In expensive hotels there may be imported soft sand, in some hotels the beach is a platform.

The sea in Marmaris is colder than near Antalya and Kemer, and even in the hottest months (July - August) it does not taste like fresh milk.

In addition to the long promenade (the longest in Turkey, the length of which is 13 km), where there are many bars and restaurants, in Marmaris in the center of the old city is the famous bar street - Bar Street. This street is home to popular nightclubs, where the fun starts at midnight and lasts until the morning. The entrance to the nightclubs is free, the atmosphere is very democratic, and you can visit more than one club per night.

Shopping in Marmaris

Shopping in Turkey this is a separate topic altogether! If I say a few words about shopping in Marmaris, here everything is fine with him. There are many small chain stores in the city center, of course with fixed prices. And for those who like to bargain (not for me 😎) there is a covered bazaar with everything you need. They even sell ugg boots!

Currency exchange - even rubles are changed!

We spent only a day, but I managed to fall in love with this truly resort town! This is how, in my understanding, a seaside resort should look like: with a long embankment, cute cafes, palm trees, ships in the sea.

In the evening, when we were walking along the embankment, we saw an interesting sight - the locals kindled huge bonfires and jumped over them, like we have at the celebration of Ivan Kupala. It was May 5 - maybe someone knows what kind of holiday the Turks had on that day?

This is the place that I can safely recommend to my family and friends if they are going to go to Turkey on a voucher. And it doesn't matter if they are interested in youth rest or rest with children. You can find both here!
