Crete's most beautiful coves and beaches. The best sandy beaches of Crete: hotels, reviews, descriptions. Beaches on the south coast of Crete

If you have decided to spend your holidays in Greece and are looking for a suitable place for a carefree beach holiday, then it is better to go to Crete. On this large island, everyone will find a place to their liking. This article will describe the best beaches in Crete.

Rich choice

There are over forty different beaches on the coast of Crete. Depending on the location, they can be pebbly and sandy, wild and developed, remote and located in close proximity to noisy resort areas. In the southern part of the island there are mainly pebble beaches. They are surrounded by picturesque cliffs with stunning sea views. On the north coast are the sandy beaches of Crete. Rest in these places involves a series of clear sunny days spent by the calm and gentle sea, away from the hustle and bustle of people and everyday worries.

Frangokastello

The best beaches in Crete have a history of their own. For example, in the southwestern part of Crete, thirteen kilometers west of the city of Sfakia, is the Frangokastello beach. It got its name from a nearby Venetian castle. Naturally, a medieval building cannot do without ghosts. And the locals claim that every year, in the month of May, they see the ghosts of soldiers killed in the war high in the predawn sky above the castle "Drosulites".

In general, Frangokastello, despite the gloomy medieval legend, the place is very positive and sunny. This is a sandy beach that goes into the purest sea waters. There is a very smooth descent into the sea, so swimming with children is pleasant and safe. Frangokastello is equipped with everything you need: sun loungers and umbrellas, showers and more. There is a fish tavern next to the beach, which serves delicious local dishes: fish baked with zucchini and cheese cakes. There are a lot of hotels in the vicinity of the beach, ready to offer apartments for every budget and taste. Visitors speak of this place with great warmth. There is no large crowd of people here, the water is very warm and clear, and the places are very picturesque and memorable.

Elafonisi

The beaches of Crete, with their diversity, resemble the sea that washes them. Elafonisi Beach is an amazing place, famous primarily for its unusual sand. It is white with pink dots that give it the smallest shards of sea coral and seashells. Under different lighting conditions, the sand takes on the most incredible shades, which, combined with the glare of turquoise water, is an incredibly beautiful sight. Elafonisi is located on the island of the same name, separated from Crete by hundreds of meters of sea waves. This distance is easy to wade. The waters here are quite shallow, comfortable for swimming in any weather, even during a storm.

Vacationers refer to this place as unusually romantic and magnificently beautiful. However, they note that sun loungers are the most expensive in Crete and cost 7 euros. There is one more remark - on Elafonisi it is almost always windy. Some people are even happy with this fact, while others are annoyed. But the extraordinary picturesqueness of the local landscapes makes you forget about minor inconveniences.

Georgioupolis

Crete's beaches are often located near some iconic place. This is Georgioupolis. It is next to a small white church, which stands, surrounded by the sea, at the very end of the breakwater. This is one of the most visited attractions in Crete. A picturesque resort of Georgioupolis with a sandy beach with a length of two kilometers was built here. The large number of dunes and shallow waters make this part of the coast suitable for families with small children. The beach has everything you need: umbrellas, sun loungers, showers, bars and cafes. Here you can practice various water sports and learn horse riding skills.

Visitors refer to this beach as a place with a developed infrastructure, where you can spend your time comfortably.

Malia

The best beaches in Crete have their own unique atmosphere. Malia is a place where there is always fun. There is always groovy music playing here, because the beach has its own DJ. In the evenings, foam parties take place on the beach. And during the day, guests are offered everything they need for a good holiday on the seashore: umbrellas, beach towels, sun loungers. Visitors can take their leisure time playing sports: volleyball, beach tennis. Various water attractions are also offered here. There is also a stunning water park, so you should come to Malia with your children.

Those who have visited this beach speak of it as a paradise. No more and no less.

Wai

The sandy beaches of Crete are incredibly beautiful. Wai is an unusually picturesque place surrounded by a palm grove. It is recognized as one of the most delightful resorts in Europe. People come here to take a break from the annoying civilization, but this beach cannot be called "wild". Here you will find all the amenities you need - sun loungers, changing cabins, etc. The magnificent views and the warmest Mediterranean Sea attract thousands of travelers to Wai every year. A spectacular combination of slender green palms, white sand and azure sea made this beach an excellent backdrop for filming commercials about heavenly life. In addition, this place has been awarded a special distinction for cleanliness and environmental friendliness - the EEC Blue Flag.

Most of those who visited Wai Beach appreciated the magnificence of the local places. Not only the coast is beautiful, but also the mountain serpentine, along which you have to get to it. Sun loungers here are relatively cheap - 4 euros, but many people prefer to choose a suitable place under a palm tree and settle there for free. The entrance to the water is deep enough. The beach has an observation deck with stunning views.

Loutro

Not all of Crete's beaches are located in crowded resort areas. Loutro is a small fishing village hidden in a bowl of mountains. You can get to it on foot or by sea. Those who want to take a break from annoying civilization and spend time alone with nature strive here. The atmosphere of tranquility conquers from the first minutes of your stay in Loutro. The village is located in a bay, protected from the wind. The sea is surprisingly calm here. The waters of the Libyan Sea, washing the stone coast, are striking in their crystal transparency. The local pebble beach is equipped with all the necessary attributes of a seaside holiday: sun loungers, umbrellas, places to change clothes. There are taverns and cafes where you can eat freshly prepared fish and other Mediterranean cuisine.

According to the reviews of tourists, Loutro is just an oasis of peace and quiet. Many are amazed by the fact that there is absolutely no road transport here. Almost all travelers admit that the beach here is one of the cleanest in the world, and the people are very friendly and welcoming.

Plakias

In the words of one seasoned traveler, the entire northern coastline is one magnificent sandy beach on the island of Crete. The town of Plakias is a direct confirmation of this. Here is one of the longest beaches on the island. A feeling of extraordinary freedom and spaciousness that can satisfy absolutely any taste reigns on the coast of this resort. The eastern part of Plakias was chosen by nudists.

The island of Crete, the beaches of which are described in this article, can offer both active and relaxing holidays away from noisy entertainment. Plakias will appeal to those seeking solitude and harmonious fusion with nature.

Preveli

The southern beaches of Crete are greeted by a pebble cover and refreshing sea waters. On the map of the island, you can see that Preveli is located south of Rethymno. This beach is located at the edge of the Courtagliotiko gorge, among the picturesque cliffs. This is a fairly calm place, away from the noisy resort areas and entertainment centers.

All popular destinations on the coast have their own flavor - such is cloudless Greece. Crete, whose beaches are considered the best in the country, never ceases to amaze with the variety of its landscapes. Preveli features waterfalls that carry their foamy waters into the sea, and slender palm trees. You can get to this quiet beach by car, which you then have to leave in the parking lot near the local monastery. Then you will have to go down on your own. It's not even bad. To discover the true beauty of this region, it is best to hike or mountain bike. The beauty of Lake Preveli is one of the most attractive sights of Crete.

According to traveler reviews, this rocky beach is good for sunbathing and swimming. Not everyone likes a rather difficult descent on the coast, but this disadvantage is compensated by magnificent panoramic views of the sea. Many people advise to take a small supply of food with you to Preveli, as the assortment in the local cafe is rather monotonous.

Makrigialos

This is another sunny seaside destination that Crete has to offer to its visitors. The photos of the beaches presented in this article give an idea of how heavenly a pastime in these beautiful places can be. Makrigialos is located 30 kilometers east of the village of Ierapetra. It is a long sandy beach with a well-organized infrastructure. The water on the beach is quite clear and shallow, so it is perfect for a comfortable family vacation with young children. The local village of Makrigialos has cafes, taverns and hotels where you can have a good time.

Lagoon Balos

Famous Lagoon Balos located approximately 56 km north-west of Chania and 17 km north-west of Kissamos, between the island of Gramvousa and the small promontory of Tigani. Balos is considered the best beach in Greece and you can see it in almost all travel guides in Greece. It is no coincidence that Prince Charles and Princess Diana visited Balos on a private yacht many years ago. The beach is renowned for its vibrant turquoise waters, white sands, wild natural beauty and beautiful exotic landscapes. The sea here is very warm, shallow, ideal for young children, while the cliffs at the edge of the lagoon are deeper and colder, which is good for snorkeling. Opposite the beach there is the rocky island of Gramvousa, at its top there is a Venetian castle with a gorgeous view of the surrounding landscape. In summer Balos is visited by thousands of people who arrive mainly by boat and ferry from the port of Kissamos. If you don't like crowds, it is best to avoid visiting the beach in July and August, or arrive in Balos early in the morning.

Wai

Exotic beach Wai, known as the "Palm Forest", is located in the east of the island, 25 km from Sitia and 94 km from Agios Nikolaus. The wild date grove here is made up of 5,000 palms, making it the largest known palm forest in all of Europe. According to local legend, palm trees grew here from the seeds of dates washed ashore from the Saracens in the 9th century. The beach is lined with rows of blue sun loungers and thatched umbrellas, and tourists can find cafes and main water activities here. There is a cliff at the southern end of the beach, from the observation deck of which you can enjoy a beautiful view - from here you get perfect photos. The tropical landscape attracts thousands of visitors, making the beach very crowded during the high season. The main entrance is open from sunrise to sunset.

Elafonisi

Elafonisi(or "Elafonissos") is a small island connected to the rest by a shallow reef that can be crossed when the sea is calm. The island is located just 82 km northwest of Chania and can be reached by boat or car from the Paleochora area and then cross the reef. Elafonisi ("Deer Island") - like heaven on earth, there is a beautiful beach with pink coral sand, surrounded by a shallow lagoon with clear turquoise water. This magical place has been deserted for a long time, but now it has become a popular attraction and can get quite crowded during the high summer season. The lack of waves and depth is great for kids, while adults can swim in the open sea south of the spit that limits the lagoon. The beach has free parking and is equipped with sun loungers and umbrellas, showers and toilets. If you go to the island itself, you will find there a completely wild beach with crystal clear water, where every pebble is visible even at an impressive depth.

Falasarna

In the bay Falasarna is one of the best beaches, located in a picturesque area near the village of Platanos, 58 km west of Chania. In 2002, it was voted the best in Greece and is regularly ranked among the ten best beaches in Europe. Falasarna covers a huge area and consists of actually five beaches, with two of the central ones being the most popular. They all consist of fine golden sand with incredibly clear turquoise water. The main beach, Pahya Ammos, stretches for a kilometer, and its width ranges from 150 to 300 meters! There are umbrellas and sun loungers, as well as several taverns, water activities and a volleyball court. To the north of it there is another central Long Beach, and not far away there is the Agii Paraskeva chapel and a spring with fresh water. Also in the northern part of the bay are the ruins of an ancient Roman city. The only drawback of the beach is that it looks to the west and is often quite windy here and waves rise. However, this is the best time for local windsurfers.

Preveli

Beach Preveli located 40 km south of Rethymno and is the most idyllic beach in the area. Preveli resembles an exotic lagoon - it is an oasis of palm trees with crystal clear greenish water and fine soft sand. The Kurtaliotis River ends at this beautiful beach, creating a delta. In addition to superb palm trees, lush vegetation surrounds the beach and river, creating a stunning landscape. Due to its beauty, Preveli beach becomes very crowded during the high season. This wonderful place can be reached on foot from the parking near the Preveli Monastery or by fishing boats that regularly depart from Plakias and Agia Galini.

Matala

Matala- one of the most famous beaches in Greece, located 67 km south-west of the city of Heraklion in the village of the same name. The beach stretches for 300 meters, with light golden sand, bamboo umbrellas and sun loungers. The cliffs flanking the bay are famous for their majestic caves, which hippies used as hiding places in the 1960s. Equally important is the fact that this place was inhabited in antiquity, and it was then that these caves were created by the locals. Today, prehistoric dwellings are fenced off. Previously, Matala was a fishing village, but today its locals are mainly engaged in tourism. It offers numerous rooms equipped with modern amenities. There is also a camping site and many fish taverns.

Rodakino

Beach near a small village Rodakino located 43 km south of Rethymno and near the village of Plakias. This is the perfect place for relaxation. Everything here is quite organized, with amenities and other services. And at the same time, it is very isolated and offers a calm, secluded environment. The beach is located behind a hill that protects it from the winds, and once you climb up, you can take spectacular photos with unforgettable landscapes. Other small, quiet beaches can be found along the road connecting Rodakino and Plakias.

Myrtos

Myrtos- a charming village with a long sand and pebble beach 15 km west of Ierapetra. Along with the beaches of Vai and Matala, it was one of the original Cretan hippie mecca of the 1960s and 1970s, and despite the abundance of luxury housing in the area, it still retains some informality today. Even when the wind blows in the rest of the eastern part, it is always calm here, since the beach lies at the base of the Dikti mountain range and remains protected. In addition to swimming, you can rent a boat or enjoy fresh seafood at one of the coastal tavernas.

Timbaki

Timbaki- a small pebble beach located about 70 km south-west of Heraklion near the village of the same name. It is also known as Kokkinos Pyrgos. The beach has a small harbor where boats dock. Timbaki is not as popular for swimming as nearby Matala or Agia Galini. Usually strong winds blow here, creating big waves, so the beach is very good for those who practice water sports. Timbaki is not organized, but it is very quiet and clean here. Apartments, mini-hotels and several traditional taverns are nearby.

The island of Crete is surrounded by three purest seas: from the North - the Cretan Sea of the same name, in the west the island is washed by the Ionian Sea, and in the south by the Libyan Sea. There are a huge number of beaches for every taste and color. If you are flying to Crete for a vacation, you will certainly want to know what the best beaches in Crete are worth visiting. Clicking on the map will take you to the exact coordinates of the Google map.

The best beaches of Crete on the map

If you want privacy, then you need to go to Balos in the morning or vice versa, in the late afternoon. Well, if you came to Crete in the first half of May, then you don't have to worry, because the boats do not go yet, and quite a few tourists come by cars.

What is so good about this beach? Firstly, the water is simply amazing in the number of shades. Very beautiful views. Fine sand, pink in places, perfectly clear water and quite shallow.

There are sun loungers and umbrellas even on such a remote beach. There is also a toilet, but there are no shops on the beach itself, so you need to take a snack, water, sunscreens with you.

Located in the southwestern part of the island. It is easy to get there by car following the signs directly to the beach.

In the middle of the day and in high season, there are many people on the beach.

We got to the beach at sunset, and there was no one else here.

Here, just like in Balos, pink sand, crystal clear water, and shallow water.

The Elafonisi islands are wading.

Located in the south of the island, next to the Franokastello fortress. Quite quiet and cozy beach. Nearby there are shops and taverns, toilet and shower, sun loungers and umbrellas.

Fine white sand, clear water. There is also a smooth entry into the water. Children will definitely like it here.

This is a rather secluded corner, located at the end of the Agiofarango gorge.

The beach is wild, pebbly. Such a small bay surrounded by rocks. It is impossible to get to the beach by car. The car will have to be left in the parking lot, and walk along the gorge for about 2 km... But the gorge is wide, the path is surrounded by tall cliffs, and the path itself is straight, easy, I think even a child can handle it. There is a small church in the gorge. The water in the bay is clear and turquoise.

There are not many people on the beach (only 10 people were counted). But, however, because of such a seclusion of the beach, nudists chose it, so that half of the vacationers on the beach sunbathed naked. If this confuses you, then it is better not to waste time on Agiofarango.

It is located in the northeast of the island, just east of Agios Nikolaos, in the village of Istro. It is very easy to get here: you can get there by car or by bus.

The beach is organized, there are sun loungers with umbrellas, toilets, changing rooms, a shower, a cafe, a large parking lot. There is fine "golden" sand on the beach. The beach strip is rather narrow, but stretches for a great length along the coast. The entrance to the water is shallow. Of course, the water is perfectly clear. The bottom is sandy and even. Paradise for kids. In windy weather, you can ride good waves.

Of course, there are a lot of people on the beach during the day. But we got to the beach at about 5 pm, we were practically alone, apart from a couple of people.

The beach is annually awarded with a "blue flag" and is included in the prestigious list of beaches of the Costa Nostrum organization. In our opinion, this is the best beach in Crete and also easily accessible.

Ierapetra beach

Quite long, city beach, equipped with everything you need. The water is clean, like everywhere else in Crete.

The beach itself is sandy, but the sand is gray and there are pebbles. At the entrance to the sea there are stone slabs, so it will probably be more comfortable to enter the special. shoes.

There are tamarisk trees on the beach, and if you don't want to pay for an umbrella, you can hide in their shade.

It is located at the northeastern tip of Crete. But this beach disappointed me. It takes a long time to get there, parking is paid. If you leave the car along the road, then it's decent to go to the beach, and there are not so many places where you can squeeze the car, and everything else is fenced. There are many cafes, dear ones. Shower and toilet are paid, sun loungers and umbrellas of course are also paid. There is a palm grove, for which everyone comes here.

There are catastrophically many tourists (not visible in the photo, because it is day and they are all hiding in the shade of trees and cafes). We didn't swim. But we climbed the mountain to the right of the bay. A pretty decent staircase leads upstairs, from here, from above, a beautiful view of the entire bay opens (on the top photo).

For those who nevertheless came here and are in no hurry, you can go to the neighboring secluded beach (pictured below). You can get to it by going up the stairs from Vai beach, and going through the top of the mountain along the path, go down.

But apart from a beautiful panorama, there is nothing special about this beach. Is it worth going so far when there are many more interesting beaches much closer?

For us, the most comfortable, affordable and classy steel Vulism and . These beaches will suit perhaps all categories of tourists: young people, older ones and families with children.

Balos is very beautiful, but because of its inaccessibility it is difficult to visit it more than once. But at least once it is worth seeing.
