Australia cities

Before the colonization of the continent by Europeans, the bulk of the population was made up of indigenous people. They settled in the southeastern part of the continent. This is due to the fact that there are the most suitable climatic conditions for human life.

The arrival of Europeans in Australia was marked by the beginning of the process of forced relocation of the original inhabitants to desert, unsuitable for life territories.

The bulk of the aborigines still live in unity with nature and obtain food through hunting and gathering.

In the 18th century, the colonialists began to actively develop new lands. The center of colonization was the southeastern tip of the mainland. In 1788, the exiled English settled here. They founded Port Jackson, which later became Sydney.

Since ancient times, Sydney and Melbourne have been competing cities. Each of them at one time claimed the title of the capital. The choice was not easy and therefore the decision was made to build a new city - Canberra - located between Sydney and Melbourne. It was this city that became the official capital of Australia.

Sydney and Melbourne are considered major cities in Australia.

Town Brisbane is an attractive tropical city with a million population. It ranks third on the list after Sydney and Melbourne. The city is named after the Brisbane River, at the mouth of which it is located. Today the metropolis is an interweaving of modern and colonial styles of architecture. Church spiers of Victorian buildings are organically combined with palm trees.

It is the main city on the west coast of the continent. It is also the capital of the state of Western Australia. It is called “the pearl of Australia”. There is a mint in Perth. It is also a kind of historical monument that tells about the gold mining industry in Western Australia. Like any modern city, Perth is built up with new buildings. But there are also buildings with a rich history. One of such monuments of architecture and history is the most beautiful theater building of the 19th century, referred to as the Theater of His Majesty.

A small opinion poll proved that Russians, recalling the cities of Australia, will name only two giants, Melbourne and Sydney, the capital of Canberra, and some others Darwin. Darwin entered this list only because he is consonant with the name of the great biologist.

There is no need to be upset that Russians are not aware of the geography of Australia. The Australians will probably not name anything except Moscow and St. Petersburg. Despite the fact that in our country there are more cities, in average, and the history is richer. There is no need to be offended by anyone, you just need to expand your horizons. This is what we will do now. Friends, here is a small overview of Australian cities that may be of interest to a migrant from Russia.

Canberra - named capital

Canberra is the Australian capital. Translated from the local dialect, Canberra means "meeting place". The capital, unlike most large cities on the green continent, is located far from the sea, at the foot of the mountains. It is very calm here, despite the concentration of power. Australian politicians differ from Russian politicians mainly in that they do not attract any attention to themselves. No flashing lights on the roofs of cars, escort corteges and other attributes. Canberra itself was founded as a compromise option in the dispute between Melbourne and Sydney. These two large cities at one time claimed the title of the capital of the country. No one wanted to compromise, and neither side had a big advantage. Then the authorities decided, so as not to offend anyone, to build the capital from scratch. According to the project of the American architect Griffin, the beautiful Canberra appeared at the foot of the mountains in the twenties of the twentieth century.

Canberra is now an elegant, beautiful, green city all year round. Since the Australian capital was designed in the twentieth century, and not in the Middle Ages, not by illiterate settlers, but by professional architects, the residents of Canberra are not familiar with the problems of modern large cities. The streets here are wide, the transport interchanges are modern, and the city breathes with novelty and thoughtfulness.

Despite the status of the capital, Canberra is closely adjacent to tropical forests. An hour's drive from the city begins the magnificent Thredbo ski resort, and two hours from the wonderful beaches. Contrary to the opinion that Canberra is just the capital, there are over thirty factories in the city.

The population of Canberra is educated people. The number of people with higher education is the highest in the country. There are not many migrants in this city, since it is not large. There are very few Russians. If you want to get a job in the civil service and quickly assimilate, then this is a definite plus.

Melbourne - the city of a thousand lights

In fact, you can talk about Melbourne for hours. Real Australian New York. A fairytale city, a dream city, falling into its net, you disappear forever. Geographically, Melbourne is located in the southeast of Australia, in Port Philip Bay. It is home to about four million people of all nations, beliefs and ages. Melbourne, according to Australians, is the cultural capital of the country. There are more than fifty museums, dozens of theaters, hundreds of restaurants and magnificent beaches.

The city was founded at the height of the Australian gold rush and was the capital of the state from 1901 to 1927. Only the houses of the Victorian era, standing in the very center of Melbourne, remind of that dashing time now. In an amicable way, they should be demolished, since such anachronisms hardly fit into the modern look of the city, but buildings, nevertheless, are cherished as historical monuments.

In some places, Melbourne resembles not noisy New York, but a cheerful Rio de Janeiro. Firstly, the climate is more similar, and secondly, carnivals, festivals, and some kind of competitions are constantly held. Of course, comparing Melbourne with other cities is incorrect. He himself long ago proved his right to independence. That only is the status of the best city in the world.

It is no exaggeration to say that Melbourne has it all: work, residential areas, leisure facilities, sports centers, beaches, even national parks and waterfalls.

“You know, probably, if I sinned less in my past life, then in this one I would not have been born in Omsk, but immediately in Australia,” complains Maxim Kostyuchenko, who works as a programmer in Melbourne.

Russians have long chosen Melbourne. There are more of them here than anywhere else. Russians are not even scared by the highest prices in the country, not real estate. They would rather buy cheap things, but rent a house in Melbourne, since it is prestigious to live here, and just give our compatriots a reason - they will immediately let the force go. Russians live in the city both as families, singles and diasporas. There are so-called Russian quarters. Our compatriots here, with rare exceptions, are quite pleasant people. You can not be afraid that having moved to Melbourne, you will fall under the wing of the Russian mafia, which will demand money from you. Everything is very good and decent. Due to the abundance of tourists, however, it can be noisy at night on the central streets, but the sleeping areas do not know this problem. If you love an active life and have money or a good specialty, then move to Melbourne without hesitation. In addition, this city is ideal for Muscovites. In terms of the rhythm of life, our capital and the largest city in Australia are approximately equal.

Sydney - the financial pulse of the state

Just as all Russians are divided into those who love Moscow more and those who love St. Petersburg more, and Australians. Some support Sydney, others love Melbourne. Sydney is one of the most beautiful cities in the world, the financial capital of the green continent. Moreover, the fact that the continent is exactly green is felt here like in no other corner of Australia. Sydney is simply showered with green oases with beautiful palm trees and lush grass. Downtown Sydney has 34 hectares of greenery. No other metropolis in the world can boast of a similar one. Here, right on the street, there are advertisements calling to walk on the grass, hug trees and smell roses. This is a pure truth. Compare with our signs “do not walk on the lawns!”, Remember the grandmothers who scold people who turn off the path onto the grass. And we ourselves, to be honest, reproachfully look at the person who stomps straight on the grass in the park. In Sydney, all this can and should be done. The lawn does not look withered at all because people walk on it. And joy to people. Could there be something more precious and more important than simple human joy?

With an abundance of gardens, Sydney is twice the size of American New York. True, all the symbols of the city are located quite compactly, next to the city harbor: the building of the Sydney Opera House and the Harbor Bridge. According to tourists and Sydney residents, this bridge offers the most beautiful sunset in the world.

Sydney is famous not only for its palm trees, but also for its beaches. There are more than twenty of them in the city. The most popular is Bondai. This is where Australian surfers hone their skills. Films about sharks that hunt surfers are also filmed here. In fact, there are no sharks. Along the coast, in case of their visit, there is a special net. The predator simply will not be able to swim through it, which means it will not threaten vacationers. If you don't see sharks in the city, then whales and dolphins are easy. They swim to Port Stefers, causing a stir among tourists every time. Local residents are much more relaxed about marine life.

There are many migrants in Sydney. These are mainly young people who come here to study. There are also enough Russian-speaking people, although there are not as many of them as in Melbourne. The city is suitable for those who make good money and, accordingly, like to spend money. There is nothing to do in Sydney without money. Among the Russians in this city, there are mainly children of wealthy parents.

Brisbane is the real Australia

Brisbane, unlike Melbourne and Sydney, is no longer "Australia from postcards and movie tapes", it is a real city. Real life is felt here. The city was founded in the 19th century by settlers for settlers. Even now, you can find buildings of that Victorian era here. Brisbane is home to just under two million people. There is a river here, but no beaches. The ocean is about a hundred kilometers away. The city is a large industrial center. Russian engineers often move here. Here they can easily find a good job. Brisbane's business center is small. It cannot be compared with Sydney or Melbourne. Nevertheless, the city has all the infrastructure for a comfortable and quiet life.

There are also plenty of tourists in Brisbane, but unlike Sydney and Melbourne, they do not make so much noise, and they scurry non-stop within the boundaries of Queen and Mall streets. There are many nightclubs and restaurants in the city that overlook the river bank with their terraces. Thus, the entire nightlife of Brisbane runs along the river of the same name. In addition to domestic engineers, there are still many of our compatriots engaged in unskilled labor. Fortunately, enterprises require hard workers, and the service sector requires waiters, cleaners and bartenders. Brisbane has to fit people who don't like Moscow. Here time passes slowly, and various shocks are rare.

Adelaide - a metropolis with sea lions

Adelaide is the capital of the state of South Australia. The city stands directly on the ocean. This is how it attracts thousands of tourists every year. Adelaide has a population of one million. The city has a large business center built up with skyscrapers. The rest of the city is dominated by small houses, two to three stories high.

Here is the best fishing in the country. Within the city there is a nature reserve with sea lions and real kangaroos.

In terms of the richness of the cultural life, Adelaide is ahead of Brisbane, but lags behind Sydney and Melbourne. Russians began to settle here relatively recently. In Soviet times, Russian-speaking people favored only Melbourne and Sydney. Now, every year, there are more and more Russians in Adelaide. There is where to work and where to relax, but you don't get tired of the lights and city events as much as in the two main cities of the country. Adelaide resembles Yekaterinburg in its atmosphere. But here the climate is more gentle and the conditions for life are better.

Alice Springs - the heart of the continent

Alice Springs is a city located in the heart of Australia. The nearest large settlement is 1,500 kilometers from here, and 1,200 to the sea. Alice Springs, or simply Alice as the locals call it, was founded as the center of the caravan routes. Years have passed, caravans have sunk into oblivion, and now road and railways connecting the whole country pass through Alice. Despite the importance of Alice as a logistics center, his main income is tourism. Not far from the city are the famous mountains Uluru and Kata Tjuta, which annually attract hundreds of thousands of climbers and travelers. Now, near Mount Uluru, a tourist village Yularu has been built, and an airport is attached to it, so that some of the tourists who had arrived earlier in Alice now go directly to the miracle mountain.

Alice Springs is popular with desert lovers. Here, the tourism business is on a grand scale. You can drive through the desert in jeeps, participate in camel races, eat cactus dishes and much more. The settlers in Alice Springs have nothing to do. They are reluctant to hire them here, and you can work informally or do unskilled labor on the coast.

Cairns - a city surrounded by the tropics

For lovers of romance, the city of Cairns is suitable. It is also suitable for those people who like to post photos in classmates to spite old acquaintances. Cairns seems to be sketched from books about distant tropical islands. The lush forests here come close to the city limits, so to go on a picnic, you need to drive some ten to fifteen minutes by car. And here it is, virgin nature, all in front of you. Unlike Russian trips to "barbecue", picnics in Australia are more civilized. If you haven't cleaned up the trash after you, then a fine of several thousand dollars awaits you. Although people here earn good money, there are no people willing to part with their money. Therefore, it is clean everywhere, both in the city and beyond. Trash comes only from tourists.

There are many tourists in Cairns. Basically, these are Canadians and Americans, Europeans for some reason do not come here, but in vain. The climate is very mild, the average annual air temperature is 26 degrees above zero. Add to this white beaches, coral islands and luscious tropics. Isn't it a heavenly place?

Tourists in Cairns are engaged in diving, kayaking, snorkeling, horse riding. From here the road to the Australian Barrier Reef begins.

Tour guides take tourists to the virgin jungle, admire the handsome crocodiles and extinct volcanoes. Once upon a time in these places began the Australian gold rush. Australians also make money on this. You can take a ride on the old railway, go down to the mine, try to pan for gold in the river.

For life, Kearns is poorly suited. Firstly, the city lives off tourism alone. Secondly, migrants are not particularly favored here. Thirdly, living in a resort is a dubious pleasure; it is necessary to rest at a resort. It is difficult for immigrants to find official work in Cairns. Australians work as tourism managers and there is no shortage of them. In the future, when Russians will more often choose Australia for recreation, the city will need Russian-speaking guides. Then move, and now you won't find decent work there.

Perth - industrial capital

Perth is a large industrial city, the capital of the state of Western Australia. The city is home to more than a million people, which is three quarters of the population of the entire state.

The lion's share of the city's residents work in the mining industry. Now gold, nickel and diamonds are mined here. Our Yakut diamonds are a direct competitor to those mined in Australia, near Perth in the Kalgoorlie region, at the Kimberley deposit.

The city regularly hosts various conferences and symposia. Specialists from all over the world come here. There is no better place to exchange opinions and establish business contacts. Although Perth is a serious city, it has snow-white beaches, bars, restaurants and nightclubs nearby. In recent years, this city has become increasingly popular among Russians. People come here to work and study. In fact, if your profession is somehow connected with the extractive industry and you can prove it to Australian employers, then you are guaranteed a comfortable old age.

Darwin is the gateway to the world

Surely, no one needs to explain that the city is named after the great scientist, the author of the theory of evolution. The Australian Darwin does not have as much scientific meaning as we would like. The city is not a university or research center, it is a port city, an outpost of the Australian state in the north. All roads lead to Darwin, from the south, east and west of the continent. Everything that Australia sells for export is shipped through the port of Darwin. In addition, cruise and passenger ships go to Southeast Asia. From Asia, in turn, electronics, cheap clothes and other things get to Australia.

Darwin's population is barely one hundred thousand. By Russian standards, this is a baby city that does not even deserve the title of a regional center. However, in the north of Australia you will not find a more populated city than Darwin. Although here and, in comparison with Russia, and a good climate, people choose the East coast for life. Darwin's climate is comparable to our summer Sochi. It's very humid and hot here. It is in this part of the continent that acclimatization is most difficult. All year round, except for the tropical winter, the thermometer does not drop below thirty degrees Celsius. The monsoon season begins in November and it can rain for weeks.

The beaches in Darwin are bad, so you can't find vacationers here. The sea, although it resembles fresh milk in temperature, does not attract local residents. Migrants do not really like Darwin, but people with a specialty related to navigation or the sea can easily find work here. After all, you can hire a sailor on the ship. True, you will have to work with Filipinos or other Asians, but this is better than sitting around, besides, learn some native language.

The Gold Coast is simply the Gold Coast

No wonder the Gold Coast concludes our review. He's like a highlight on a pie. If you visit there at least once, but you understand that such a comparison is not superfluous. The Gold Coast is "Australian everything." The country has no Red Square, no pyramids, no Statue of Liberty - it boasts of the Gold Coast. Millions of tourists from Europe and America come here every year. The best sea and beaches are not found in the whole world.

The Gold Coast is the sixth most populous city in the country. It stretches along the coastline for sixty kilometers. For comparison, it's like from Samara to Togliatti.

The Gold Coast is bordered to the west by the Dividing Ridge and rainforests, which are protected by UNESCO. The western part of the city borders on the Dividing Range. Nearby is Lamington Park, part of the World Heritage Sites of Eastern Australia's rainforest.

Previously, rather aggressive aborigines lived in these places, which caused a lot of trouble for sailors, but now the population of the Gold Costa is purely peaceful. There are no natives among them at all. In the 80s, the Japanese began to build their skyscrapers and open branches of companies on the Gold Coast. This allowed the city to acquire the form that it has now - a synthesis of business and tourist centers. There are many jobs for migrants here. Someone works as a hotel guide, someone as a doorman, someone as an administrator. It is enough to know English above the intermediate level and there will be a job. Usually inexpensive, by local standards, hotels have a high turnover. In addition, the Gold Coast may be of interest to remote specialists, brokers and those who do not need money. If you want to live a luxurious life in Australia's most exclusive location - welcome to the Gold Coast.

In conclusion about cities in Australia

As you can see for yourself, the cities of Australia do not end with Melbourne, Sydney and Canberra. On the far southern continent, there is a place for miners, railroad workers and sailors alike. The raw materials tilt of the Australian economy allows our compatriots to easily adapt to the green continent. This is not high-tech Japan. Australia is essentially doing the same things as Russia, only with more modern equipment. What follows from this? A Russian person in Australia may have a culture shock, but there will be no technological shock for sure. Feel free to look for work across the continent, choose a place to live to your liking and you will surely be lucky.

The only one in the world the country, occupying from edge to edge an entire continent (7 692 000 sq. km), is one of the few states that do not have land borders with neighboring countries.

Indigenous people living in isolation since unimaginable Neolithic times strange animals and endemic plants - all this bizarrely coexists in Australia with the global civilization of the XXI century.

And how many of them are there - a detailed map in Russian

Country national flag was created at the beginning of the last century. True to tradition, it depicts the Union Jack of the British Empire, the star of the Imperial Commonwealth of the seven rays and the brightest constellation in this part of the world - the Southern Cross. The red-white-blue color scheme went to the Australian standard also from the British.

National emblem decorated with mimosa. On the branches are an ostrich and a kangaroo, which hold a shield with the heraldry of six regions (states) of the country.

Official language in the country - English.

The Australian dollar (AUD) is a freely convertible currency. These bills are not paper. The Australians have sealed money on plastic for the first time in the world.

Australian cities consistently rank among most comfortable for living... And recently (2011), Melbourne even headed the prestigious top ten of such "cities for people." Three more Australian megacities are in the top ten - Sydney, Perth and Adelaide.

In Australia total 89 cities, and by European standards, they are quite young. The first was founded Sydney (1788), now the largest ocean port on the east coast of the country.

But the capital of the country, Canberra, is barely a hundred years old. It was founded in 1913.

The most important is the capital Canberra

Capital Canberra cannot be called a metropolis - its population slightly over 358,000 citizens, but by Australian standards, this is a large city.

The concept of the architects during the construction of the capital was to create a garden city, which was successfully implemented.

It was decided to build the capital in the center of the country, right next to Namaji National Park... The city has become one of the greenest in the country; Australians call Canberra the Forest Capital.

In the political center of the state there are embassies and trade missions, editorial offices of newspapers, news agencies and television companies.

Here is the seat of the government and parliament of the country, the largest museums and cultural centers, several universities and military academies.

TO the most visited and popular sites relate:

  • Canberra Theater Center;
  • National Museum of Australia;
  • The National Dinosaur Museum;
  • James Cook Memorial;
  • excursions to the nearby Namadzhi National Park;
  • Tidbinbilla Wildlife Park.
