Is it possible to check a criminal record using a passport?

Having a criminal record is not a particularly pleasant fact. This “stain” can sometimes prevent you from obtaining a visa or finding a job. After all, everyone knows that many employers are very careful about screening their potential employees. To avoid any misunderstandings, you need to know how a criminal record check is carried out using a passport.

Why check

Typically, the need to establish the fact of a violation of the law arises from employers during the process of applying for a job to a citizen. The law stipulates that company managers cannot refuse to provide a position to a citizen because he has a criminal record. Also, the company cannot verify this fact independently. The HR department can only ask for an answer regarding the “black spots” in the completed questionnaire or provide a certificate confirming the absence of this “dark spot”.

It is important to know that not every employer may require a certificate. This can only be done by enterprises that are prohibited from hiring a convicted person, for example, schools.

Recently, the presence of a criminal record could be established using a criminal record mark in the passport. This procedure has been canceled for today. The only document that has such information is a military ID.

What does a criminal record hinder?

The presence of violations of the law in the life of a Russian makes it unrealistic:

  • leaving Russia;
  • receiving weapons and storing them;
  • training at designated universities in the country;
  • work in government bodies and departments that are responsible for security - FSB, courts, Ministry of Internal Affairs;
  • Military service;
  • free movement within the Russian Federation.

In addition to working in government agencies, a criminal record limits the ability to work in educational institutions.

Examination

Information about people, including those included in the database of the main information and analytical agency of the Ministry of Internal Affairs of the Russian Federation. Because the importance of knowing such data is in great demand today, many are interested in how to check a person’s criminal record using a passport. Let us note that an ordinary citizen cannot perform this action. A request for information about the relationship a Russian citizen has with the law can be either the citizen himself or a body authorized to do so. The organization itself or the person concerned cannot do this.

The request can be made at the department of the Ministry of Internal Affairs at the place of registration. The applicant must submit the application in person. Also, the certificate can only be issued to the person who made the request; he must provide a passport and personally sign. Such a document is reviewed within a two-week period.

Considering that this information is confidential, it is impossible to check your criminal record online using your passport. This can only be done in the order described above.

When expunging or expunging a criminal record

The law states that the expungement of a criminal record or expungement reduces to him all the consequences of this fact in a person’s life. If he was convicted of a crime of particular gravity, then he can not only find employment in his specialty, but even have the right to purchase and store weapons.

There is no need to report this fact when filling out an employment application. In reality, this right is exercised only in ordinary positions in small organizations. Large companies arrange a thorough check for their employees; in most cases, they have personal access (unofficial) to the Ministry of Internal Affairs database, so they can easily identify this fact, so don’t try to hide it any further.

A criminal record is expunged after 2-10 years, depending on the term that the convicted person served.
