1 piece of luggage. Basic rules for carrying baggage on board. Utair and S7: consider the changes

How much baggage can I take with me on the plane? Can I carry alcohol, perfume, aerosols, medicines, cigarettes in my baggage? What about food? Let's consider these issues in detail.

There are no international rules for baggage transportation, each air carrier regulates this issue independently. The airline can choose local or weight transportation of baggage.

Allowable weight of baggage per person on the plane

The weighing system allows you to carry free of charge:

  • in economy class no more than 20 kilograms of luggage with its total linear size of 203 centimeters;
  • in business class, with the same size, it is allowed to take 30 kilograms with you.

If at least one parameter of your baggage does not fit into the established norms, the air carrier has the right to demand additional payment. Children under ten years old under such a system have the right to transport ten kilograms of things, and from the age of twelve they are already entitled to an adult rate of cargo transportation.

The weight system is convenient in that when traveling together, the weight of all things is summed up, and the number of bags is not counted.

The local system replaces the weighing system, despite its obvious convenience. Aeroflot recently switched to it. Here the rules of carriage are as follows:

  • economy class allows you to take only one piece of luggage with a bag no heavier than 23 kilograms;
  • in business class conditions are milder: two pieces of baggage weighing no more than 32 kilograms each.

The main difference between the luggage system is that the weight of the luggage is not summed up. For example, on a flight for two in economy class, passengers carry two things weighing 15 and 25 kilograms. The extra two kilos will be counted as the third piece of baggage and paid in full. When planning your luggage before traveling, keep in mind that such overload is charged at a high rate, comparable to the price of the ticket. Therefore, you should carefully calculate the weight of things.

The requirements for the maximum allowable baggage size in the local system are even stricter: the total linear size of the item is no more than 158 centimeters.

Rules for the carriage of food, alcohol and cigarettes on the plane

Alcohol is not included in the list of goods prohibited on the plane, but there are still certain rules for it. So, in hand luggage, each adult passenger has the right to carry one liter of alcoholic beverages, regardless of their strength. The whole amount is divided into several containers of no more than 100 milliliters each. All bottles are packed in a plastic bag with a clasp. It is forbidden to use them on board: the packaging must not be broken until the end of the flight. Breaking the rules can get you in trouble.

Alcohol in baggage is subject to the following rules:

  • liquids not stronger than 24% are transported without restrictions, but without going beyond the general weight restrictions;
  • alcohol with a strength of 24 to 70% no more than five liters per passenger;
  • alcohol stronger than 70% is prohibited for carriage.

Alcoholic drinks purchased before the flight in duty-free shops are allowed to be transported in carry-on luggage, but in a whole package with a saved receipt. In low-cost companies, you will most likely have to pay for transporting a package of alcohol from a duty-free shop.

In different countries, the norms for the transport of strong drinks can vary greatly, so before an international flight, inquire about this issue separately.

The same recommendations apply to the question of the rules for the carriage of cigarettes. However, each country sets its own standards, which should be guided by before flying. For example, when flying on the territory of the Russian Federation, only one cigarette block (10 packs of 20 cigarettes), up to 250 grams of tobacco or no more than 50 pieces of cigars can be transported in hand luggage. In this case, the passenger must be 18 years old. Other countries have different age restrictions. For example, in Egypt, a 15-year-old passenger may well carry tobacco products with him, but only those who are already 20 years old can fly to Japan with cigarettes.

As for medicines, it is allowed to carry solid preparations (capsules, powders, tablets) in hand luggage. Liquid medicines, as well as ointments, creams and gels must be in a factory container up to 100 ml, and then be packed in a bag (necessarily transparent) measuring 20x20 centimeters.

When transporting prescription drugs or drugs containing psychotropic / narcotic substances, you will need to present a doctor's prescription, and for an international flight, you also need to declare such drugs. An exception is made for passengers with insulin-dependent diabetes: insulin vials, syringes and blood glucose meters are allowed in carry-on baggage.

By the way, there is a list of prohibited drugs for international flights, and you should familiarize yourself with it before departure. For example, when flying to the USA, you will not be able to take on board the usual Russian Corvalol.

On domestic flights, you can take solid food into the cabin if it fits in your carry-on baggage and does not exceed its weight. On international routes, follow the rules of the countries you are traveling to. Usually, eggs, fish, meat and dairy products are not allowed in them. The ban is connected with the fact that these products are perishable and can cause an infectious disease and even an epidemic.

The carriage of liquid products is regulated separately. These include, in addition to water and juices, canned food, jam, jelly, honey, sour cream, cottage cheese, sauces.

Most air carriers regulate the carriage of liquids and limit one liter per passenger, bottled in hermetically sealed bottles with a capacity of no more than one hundred milliliters. All other liquids, including cosmetics, deodorants, colognes, perfumes, mosquito sprays and shampoos, are checked in under the new rules.

What is forbidden to carry on the plane in baggage in 2020

There are dangerous items that are prohibited in carry-on baggage and in the hold. These include:

  • weapons: cold, firearms, gas, stun guns;
  • explosives: dynamite, cartridges, pyrotechnics;
  • gases: liquefied, compressed in cylinders, aerosols;
  • flammable liquids: petroleum products, acetone, solvents;
  • fast-flammable solid substances: matches, metal potassium, calcium, sodium;
  • poisonous and toxic: nicotine, arsenic, mercury;
  • caustic and rapidly corrosive: salts, acids, lime.

The same list includes magnetized and radioactive substances.

The list of prohibited substances and items under the new rules is extensive. If you are going to carry an unusual item on the plane, check this list in advance or consult with an airline representative. Compliance with such simple rules guarantees the safety of all passengers and the absence of problems during baggage inspection.

What to do if prohibited items are found in your luggage or luggage

Passengers often carry the "prohibited", doing it not intentionally, but simply, not knowing thoroughly the rules of the flight. If the airport security personnel find prohibited items in hand luggage or baggage, and you do not want to lose them, the situation should be resolved in the following ways.

  1. If prohibited things are found before registration: give them to the accompanying persons, hand them over to the storage room, or send them by mail (there is a branch at each airport) to the desired place.
  2. If the prohibited items are found after the registration procedure, the airline employees will offer a couple of options for resolving the misunderstanding: a complete confiscation of the "prohibited item" or a temporary seizure with the ability to pick up things after returning. Make sure that an act will be drawn up for things that are valuable to you, but which are prohibited from being transported, according to which you can get them back.

In any case, try to prove to the security service that this item is dear to you - there is always a chance that the security officers will meet halfway.

How much baggage can I take on the plane? The free and paid baggage allowance on the plane is determined by:

Worldwide There are two systems for determining the amount of free baggage allowance.
  • weight concept
  • quantitative (piece concept).

Weight system for determining the amount of free baggage allowance

In Russia, the minimum baggage allowance for a ticket with baggage is 10 kg. This rate can be increased by the carrier. In general, all airlines in the world try to adhere to the following free baggage allowance for adults and children over two years old:
  • First class - 40 kg
  • Business class - 30 kg
  • Economy class - 20 kg

The free baggage allowance includes the total weight of the baggage and the weight of the carry-on baggage.

Dimensional parameters also have limitations - for the sum of three dimensions, the size of a piece of baggage should not exceed:

  • in the first and business classes - 203 cm
  • in economy class - 158 cm

In the cabin of the aircraft, it is allowed to carry free cargo up to 10 kg with overall dimensions not exceeding 115 cm.

For each child under 2 years old who does not have a separate seat, the free baggage allowance is 10 kg.

If the airline makes changes to these standards, then information about this can always be obtained when buying a ticket.

In the cabin of the aircraft in excess of the minimum weight allowance for hand luggage, you can take:

  • binoculars
  • camcorder
  • handbag (including laptop bag)
  • men's briefcase
  • backpack
  • baby carrycot / seat up to 10 kg
  • magazine or book
  • umbrella
  • notebook
  • the tablet
  • hygiene products
  • warm clothes: coat, shawl, plaid, socks, sweater, etc.
  • holdall
  • camera
  • small bag with food, including baby food
  • medications
  • bouquet of flowers
You can also take the following items *:
  • crutches, walking sticks, or other necessary orthopedic devices
  • walkers,
  • folding wheelchairs
* These items can be placed on a shelf above the seat or under the seat of the seat in front. In the event that there is no room for them there, they can be checked in as baggage, and no additional fee will be charged.

To ensure the safety of passengers on board the aircraft, the weight and dimensions of the backpack, which is carried into the cabin in excess of the hand luggage limit of 5 kg, are set by the air carrier independently.

Seat number system

Typically this system is used on transatlantic flights. It determines the norms for the number of pieces of baggage.

Passengers of all service classes are allowed free transportation of two pieces of baggage weighing up to 32 kg each.

Please note that seat weights are not cumulative!
This means that if a single piece weighs more than 32 kg, an additional surcharge will be charged for exceeding the norm, even if the second piece weighs less than 32 kg.

In the sum of the three dimensions, the seat size must not exceed 158 cm for Economy Class and 203 cm for First and Business Class.

Excess baggage

If the weight and dimensions of your luggage exceed the established norms, then it is better to solve all the problems associated with its registration in advance. Payment for excess baggage is made in accordance with baggage rates in effect on the day the paid baggage receipt is issued, which is issued to the passenger upon receipt of payment from him at the airline's ticket office.

According to the current rules, credit payment for the carriage of excess baggage is not allowed.

Unaccompanied baggage

In this case, baggage is accepted for carriage separately from the passenger and is registered in advance as cargo under a separate air waybill.

Oversized, oversized and non-standard baggage

If you have oversized baggage, then its transportation must be coordinated directly with the airline.

Musical instruments and animals are not subject to free transportation. Payment for their transportation is carried out in accordance with the tariffs in force at the time of payment for this transportation service. Musical instruments, fragile or valuable luggage are transported in the aircraft cabin on a separate ticket.

  • With a total weight of up to 75 kg, this baggage is carried in a separate seat
  • If the total weight exceeds 75 kg, such baggage is carried on two or more seats, in accordance with this, the required number of air tickets is purchased. In this case, for each individual seat, the passenger is charged a fee corresponding to the fare of the passenger who carries this baggage. No discounts are available for this rate.
  • The established free baggage allowance does not apply to the air ticket used for the carriage of baggage in the cabin of the aircraft on a separate seat.
Oversized or non-standard baggage is baggage that, in terms of its size and weight (taking into account the type of aircraft on which the carriage is carried out), differs from the usual baggage carried. This baggage includes:
  • wheelchair
  • non-folding stroller
  • large musical instruments
  • bicycle, etc.
Such baggage is carried in the hold of the aircraft.

Usually, each airline has its own bonus programs and discount systems, so the baggage allowance for airlines may differ from the standard norms. In addition, it should be noted that these rules and regulations apply only to regular air carriers. Baggage allowances for low-cost airlines (low-cost airlines) differ from the generally accepted ones, as a rule, in a smaller direction. And some low-cost airlines do not carry baggage for free at all.

If you buy a low-cost airline ticket from a low-cost airline, then the ticket price usually includes only hand luggage, and you need to pay extra for the luggage separately. At the same time, the surcharge for the carriage of one of your luggage can be twice the price of the ticket itself. But it is better to pay for excess baggage in advance when buying an air ticket, because, most likely, it will be much cheaper than paying for excess baggage at the check-in counter.

The issue of baggage allowance in air transport worries a lot of tourists, because the norms are constantly changing. What dimensions of suitcases are allowed on board, how much one free piece can weigh, what are the rules for carrying hand luggage - all these issues should be worked out in advance so that there are no problems with baggage check-in during boarding.

What is the maximum size of a suitcase?

Today, airlines transport cargo using two systems of measures:

In the weight concept, the general cargo is taken as a basis, regardless of the number of seats, and in the peace concept, the carriage of 1 free seat for each passenger is determined (hand luggage is not taken into account in this case). The system of the number of seats limits the standard dimensions of the suitcase to 158 cm, and in the weight system this figure rises to 203 cm.

What is the weight of one suitcase in luggage can I take for free?

The weight concept determines a flight with baggage no heavier than 23 kg in economy class, a business class passenger can take 32 kg on board, up to 40 kg can be carried in the first. And the system of the number of seats determines the baggage allowance at no additional charge for the economy 23 kg.

If you have a family trip, then it is quite convenient - take with you a suitcase for each and, in total, carry a larger amount of cargo without payment than in the weight concept. However, the weight of the suitcases is not summed up, that is, from the underweight in one suitcase and the overweight in another, airport employees will not deduce the arithmetic mean.

Exceeding the weight norm will entail additional expenses, often considerable. Additionally, a child under 2 years old can carry 10 kg of cargo.

Attention! Many carriers have Economy Basic, Promo or Light fares, which include a fee for any baggage.

Allowable dimensions of a suitcase for carry-on luggage

It is very convenient to carry a small suitcase, which will be considered as hand luggage, along with you in the aircraft cabin. This is beneficial for several reasons:

One economy class passenger can take one piece of hand luggage with him for free into the aircraft cabin, two are allowed in the first and business class. The dimensions of a suitcase, which can be taken into the passenger compartment, should not exceed 115 cm in total. S-size (cabin size) suitcases are ideal for this.

Standard dimensions of hand luggage are no more than 55 × 40 × 25 cm. Weight should not exceed 10 kg... These are generally accepted rules. However, each carrier has its own norms, which may differ from the standard by 3-5 cm in one direction. Exceeding the standards will entail a surcharge, which differs from one airline to another.

Important! Before the flight, check the carrier's website for the allowed dimensions of free carry-on baggage and its maximum weight.

What if the size and weight are overweight?

It is not always possible to fill a suitcase so that the weight does not exceed the prescribed weight. If the baggage is heavier than the cherished 23 kg (the norm for business class passengers), then it will not get on board the plane without additional payment for a few kg from above. The tariff is set by each carrier separately and can range from 10 to 100 euros in different cases.

According to existing standards, the passenger has the right to carry a suitcase with dimensions of 158 cm (203 according to the weight system) for free, luggage of an infant up to 2 years old with the sum of sides 115 cm or sports equipment no more than 210 cm. at her rates.

Transporting suitcases with fragile and heavy things

If the baggage weighs in excess of the norm or the dimensions do not meet the requirements stipulated by the rules, then such cargo is defined as heavy. It can be carried only by prior agreement with the air carrier.

Important! On the day of departure, you will have to arrive at the airport in advance so that you have free time for baggage registration.

Luggage with oversized items is transported according to the same principle:

Suitcases with fragile things are marked with special marks, registration will also require a margin of time... If the breakable cargo fits the dimensions of hand luggage, you can take it with you to the cabin and not worry about the conditions of its transportation.

Rates of different airlines

Air carriers on their websites post information about the rules for the carriage of baggage, the maximum permissible dimensions, including for carry-on baggage... We have collected information about these standards for you from the airlines that are most relevant for Russian tourists. The following are the dimensions of your free baggage in Economy Class.

Aeroflot will take on board checked baggage with dimensions not exceeding 158 cm, hand baggage 55 × 40 × 25 cm, 1 piece up to 10 kg.

Checked free baggage 1 piece with dimensions not exceeding 158 cm and 23 kg from Aegean Airlines, Air Astana (20 kg), Air Berlin, Air France, Alitalia, American Airlines, Austrian Airlines, Finnair, Iberia, Lufthansa.

The largest number of centimeters limiting baggage - 203 - at S7 Airlines, Utair, Czech Airlines. Ural Airlines indicate specific allowable dimensions - 50 × 50 × 100 cm, and British Airways - 90 × 75 × 43. Qatar Airways has increased cargo dimensions to 300 centimeters.

Hand luggage standard 55 × 40 × 25 is negotiated when flying by S7 Airlines, Ural Airlines, Utair. The 55 × 40 × 23 option is indicated by Turkish Airlines, Lufthansa, Austrian Airlines. In Aegean Airlines, Iberia, Finnair, Air Astana maximum dimensions are 56 × 45 × 25, Qatar Airways indicates dimensions up to 50 × 37 × 25, Emirates up to 55 × 38 × 20 cm.

The desire to pack in a travel suitcase "a picture, a basket, a cardboard box" and many more seemingly necessary things will be suppressed by the rules of airlines, which establish the allowed baggage limit. To avoid an unpleasant situation when a passenger has to leave some of his belongings at the airport, you need to find out how much luggage is allowed on the plane. The weight requirements of well-known airlines are different, but the rule regarding hand luggage is the same for everyone: the safety of hand luggage is under the responsibility of the passenger. Such a nuance causes a lot of trouble for passengers on transfers, in waiting rooms, when going to the toilet or cafe. Therefore, airlines recommend:

Attach the owner's contact information tag to hand luggage. This will increase the chances of getting things back if lost.
If there is any trouble with your luggage (loss, theft), you should report it while on the territory of the airport.
Things offered by strangers should not be taken to the cabin of the liner. Any suspicious people making such requests should be notified to airport security or the police.
You should not leave your luggage under the supervision of random people.
Use a special baggage scale before traveling to the airport to know exactly how much your belongings weigh.

Permitted baggage weight on airplanes

Travel suitcases for carry-on luggage are subject to the following size and weight requirements: up to 115 cm (55/40/20) and 10-15 kg in total.

What else can you take on board the airliner:

Cellular telephone;
reticule / purse;
folder with documents;
bouquet of flowers;
photo camera, camcorder, laptop;
food for the baby during the flight;
baby carrier in the form of a cradle;
garment bag with a dress or suit;
an umbrella (but not a beach umbrella).

It is allowed to take with you as hand luggage such accessories: tanometers, thermometers, a bottle of peroxide. You can also take a disposable lighter for one person, no more than two kilograms of ice, various liquid substances with a total volume of no more than 100 ml.

What determines the free baggage allowance:

How long is the flight;
the route of the airliner;
what class of service.

In Aeroflot, the baggage allowance by weight is as follows:

Business class passengers for two seats can carry 32 kg of luggage + 15 kg of hand luggage.
Premium class visitors will carry 2 baggage 23 kg each and hand luggage up to 10 kg.
Economy, budget class - for 1 piece up to 23 kg of luggage and 10 kg of hand luggage.

The permissible weight of baggage on airplanes is carefully controlled using special scales and frames.

Free baggage weight on other airlines:

"S7" baggage weighing up to 23 kg for those traveling with an economy offer will be transported free of charge; for business class, this rate is up to 32 kg;
"Yuteyr" - weight of economy class baggage up to 23 kg, more expensive class - 2 pieces of 32 kg each;
Ural Airlines Luggage weighing up to 23 kg in economy class is free of charge, for business class - up to 32 kg.

Rossiya Airlines will accept baggage weighing up to 20 kg from economy class travelers for free and up to 30 kg from business class travelers.

Non-standard baggage for the cargo hold

Sports equipment (skis, snowboards, hockey gear, golf equipment) will be placed as one free place. But the parameters of the item must not exceed the allowable weight of baggage on the plane of a certain airline company, otherwise you will have to pay the excess.

A passenger with a weapon must first of all have a permit for it. When booking a flight, he is obliged to notify airport employees about the presence of weapons. The gross weight of baggage with ammunition may not exceed 5 kg.

Baby strollers and wheelchairs, if used directly, are considered basic necessities, so transportation will be free of charge. If the wheelchair is battery-powered and weighs more than 32 kg, then the intention to transport it should be reported to the airline one and a half days before departure.

For children under 2 years old, it is possible to transport things without payment up to 10 kg with a size not exceeding 115 cm.
People traveling in organized groups can use a permit, according to which the baggage allowances are summed up.

Rules for the carriage of products in hand luggage:

It is not allowed to transport liquid, creamy and gel-like products with a capacity of more than 100 ml;
All products must be transported in a plastic container with a total volume of no more than 1 liter. One such package per passenger.

Liquid and creamy foods include: preserves, jams, pates, yoghurts, peanut butter, and cottage cheese.

Unusual requirements for passengers from world airlines:

Low-cost airline "Jet Blue" USA will not accept baggage from a passenger in a box. The company does not give explanations on this, but this fact should be known. The American airline "Delta" prohibits the transportation of a computer in the luggage. It is allowed to take only a laptop or tablet as hand luggage. Most airlines do not allow unkempt or barefoot passengers to enter. The only exception for footwear is children under 5 years of age. Air Line requires that the passenger does not smell unpleasant.

How not to exceed the allowed weight on an airplane

The best advice is not to take a lot of things on the road. But this is not always the case. As a result, you have to pay extra for luggage - and this is an additional expense.

1. Do not pack your luggage in a plastic bag without first weighing it. This will save time for repackaging in case of overweight.
2. You can put heavy but small things in your pockets (just not liquid).
3. Small items can be stored in the tablet / netbook bag.
4. If you find an overweight, you can put on yourself and your companions some clothes from the suitcase.
5. You should inquire about the baggage allowance of the selected airline before packing.
6. It is better to buy such things as shampoos, gels, creams, toothpastes on the spot than to pay significant amounts for them at the airport as a result of overweight detection.
7. A small travel suitcase, which falls under the category of "carry-on luggage", will avoid the procedure of check-in and waiting for luggage, and will also make it possible to travel light.

Experienced tourists claim that 50% of all items do not come out of a travel suitcase at all. In order not to exceed the allowed weight of luggage on airplanes, you should simply not take a lot of things. Anything that can be purchased locally should be purchased locally. Otherwise, an overpayment for excess weight at the established rate is inevitable, and an unpleasant trip with heavy trunks.

Liquids in carry-on baggage

Currently, at the airports located in the territory of the Russian Federation, there are restrictions on the carriage of liquids, gels and aerosols in the carry-on baggage of passengers.

This restriction applies to: water and other drinks, soups, syrups; creams, lotions and oils; perfume; sprays; gels, including hair and shower gels; contents of cartridges, including shaving foam, other foams and deodorants; pastes, including toothpastes; mixtures of liquid and solid substances; ink; any other similar substances.

Passengers are allowed to carry with them on board the aircraft only a small amount of the above substances, but only on condition that they are packed in containers, the volume of which does not exceed 100 ml. In this case, these containers must be placed in a transparent plastic bag with a volume of not more than 1 liter, and each passenger is allowed to have only one such bag with him as carry-on baggage. These bags can be brought with you from home, but they must be equipped with a special “zipper” (see attached poster below).

In volumes larger than indicated, it is allowed to carry in hand luggage only:

  • baby food necessary for a child during the flight;
  • medications necessary during the flight (however, when passing through security, be prepared for the fact that you will be asked to prove the need for these items and substances in flight);
  • items that do not meet these requirements must be left at the airport in the luggage room.
