Foreign passports and documents

When do you need to change your passport after marriage?

In modern society, almost every second person has experience of traveling abroad, which means that they also have a passport. On this basis, questions often arise: “Do I need to change my passport after marriage?” and “how long is the passport valid after changing the surname?”. For many, this topic causes panic fear, because no one likes to “collect pieces of paper”. But let's see if it's so scary.

So, when and who needs to change the current document, and when it is not necessary to do this at all. At the moment, there are three situations regarding the replacement of documents
after the wedding:

  1. The surname of both spouses remains unchanged;
  2. A girl marries and takes her husband's surname;
  3. The husband takes the wife's surname.

In the first option: everything is simple, nothing has changed in your documents, therefore, the passport remains the same. Accordingly, you can plan a honeymoon trip to any corner of our planet, whether it be the cleanest ocean, a beautiful historical heritage, or possibly striking wildlife.

But what if one of the spouses borrows the name of the other?

“I got married, I had to take my husband’s surname, what should I do now with my documents and a passport that I received recently? Do I need to change my passport when changing my last name after marriage?

» We got married and I changed my last name to my wife's last name. My passport is valid, should I replace it?

These questions are often heard from happy newly married couples.

We answer: first you will need to upgrade your Russian passport. By the way, this action is regulated for 30 days, followed by fines: 2000-5000 depending on the place of residence.

Again, if the trip is already planned immediately after the wedding, then feel free to go on it, as the old documents will be valid for another month.

I would also like to note that if in the near future, or even 1-2 years, you do not plan to visit the Schengen countries, other countries requiring visas for entry, then feel free to postpone.

Today, many countries have allowed citizens of the Russian Federation visa-free entry into their territory. On such a trip, you only need an unmodified passport, in rare cases a marriage certificate and a Russian passport.

By the way, earlier it was quite possible to fly with a passport with old data even to visa countries. No one would turn you around at the border and even make a remark, but, alas, this is impossible now. At the moment, the system for registering citizens is unified, therefore, when a surname is changed upon marriage, all changes go to the emigration and border authorities.

What is the system for replacing a foreign passport?

When changing a surname after marriage, this is absolutely the same as the initial application for a document. Everything will have to be collected from the very beginning. But, it’s not scary if you are consistent and study the necessary information in advance.

First you need to replace the passport of the Russian Federation. To do this, you will need to contact the territorial body of the Ministry of Internal Affairs (at the place of residence, stay, appeal), you can also contact the MFC and the Unified State Portal. services.

Required documents:

  1. the passport of the Russian Federation;
  2. 4 photos;
  3. marriage certificate;
  4. payment of state duty - 300 rubles;
  5. replacement request.

When your new passport is ready, you need to replace the SNILS. Here we go either to the place of work or to the pension fund, while you will need a new passport of the Russian Federation, an application and an old pension certificate. And when all the new documents are collected, we go for a new passport.

Obtaining a foreign passport

Now in the age of online technology, everything is becoming easier, because many questions can be
decide remotely. For example, applying for a passport is possible
in two versions:

  1. Personally, by coming to the Federal Migration Service (FMS) and other departments dealing with this issue;
  2. Online by going to the website of the same service.

The second option, of course, greatly simplifies everything and partially saves time.

We will analyze our two options for applying for a passport when changing a surname. If you decide to go to the FMS (or other relevant departments) in person, then you will need the following documents:

  1. Old passport to be replaced;
  2. Application for replacement on the occasion of a change of surname and marriage;
  3. Photo;
  4. Receipt of payment of the state duty (1500/3500 depending on the type of foreign document);
  5. Employment history.

We also note that you can ask for your old passport to be returned if, for example, there are visas, and even more so if these are valid visas received 2-3 years ago, because you may need them to process new trips. By the way, many experienced travelers ask to leave their old passport as a souvenir.

If you decide to issue a document directly on the website of the department you need, then everything is extremely simple here. Go to the site, it can be the site of the FMS, FMS, or everyone's favorite State. services. Choose the subsection you need and register yourself online. This procedure simplifies, but does not speed up, obtaining a new passport. Since the average time for making and receiving a new passport is about 30 days.

Types of passports

An important point in changing the document is the choice of the type of foreign passport.
There are currently two types of passports.

  1. New generation passport - biometric.
    Valid for 10 years, it contains a chip that contains all your information, as well as fingerprints. This type of passport is convenient in that if your appearance changes, then with the help of fingerprints you can always be identified.
    The downside is that children cannot be included in this document.
    The cost of the document is 3500 rubles.
  2. Old-style passport: regular passport, without chips and prints
    fingers.
    The cost of the document is 1500 rubles.
    In such a passport, you can make children.

As you can see, there is nothing terrible and difficult in changing a passport after marriage. All you have to do is figure it out, collect the necessary documents and act.
