Round bay is located in Sevastopol, five kilometers southwest of the entrance to the Sevastopol Bay.

Features:

The bay got its name from its shape, which is close to a circle. The round bay is shallow, has a sandy bottom, which is why earlier, at the beginning of the 20th century, it had a different name - Peschanaya. At the end of the 19th - beginning of the 20th centuries, there were summer cottages and resort villages... According to the name of one of them - Omega - the bay received its second unofficial name. Despite the fact that this is a common name, it very accurately characterizes the geometry of its banks, which is close in plan to the shape of the Greek capital letter "omega" (Ω). Omega beach is located on the coast of the bay.
On the southern and southwestern shores of the bay, up to the middle of the 20th century, healing mud was mined for the treatment of the human musculoskeletal system. In the 1980s, the deposits of healing mud were destroyed by the authorities for some unknown reason and covered with earth. There is a beach on the coast of the bay with many bars, restaurants and entertainment venues. In Soviet times, the all-Union sanatorium-preventorium "Omega" was located in the bay, but with the formation of the state of Ukraine, it was transformed into a Ukrainian military hospital. Nowadays it is a hospital of the Russian Black Sea Fleet. Near the hospital there is a monument to the Bulgarian communists, who in August 1941 were transported to Bulgaria by submarines.
An emergency sewage runoff is discharged into the bay, and therefore the beach is often closed for sanitary and epidemiological reasons. East coast and the adjacent water area of the bay in the 1940s were used as a hydro aerodrome, which had the name "Sevastopol-V" (see which was later eliminated (according to unofficial data - due to unexplained interference to radio communications in this area). At the same time there is a helicopter plant, a yacht club and a wild beach on this coast.

Round Bay (Omega)- located in the Gagarin district of Sevastopol at 5 km southwest of the entrance to the Sevastopol Bay at the end of the October Revolution Avenue. The city beach "Omega" is located on its western shore. Very shallow and completely unsuitable for navigation.

The bay has a rounded shape for which it was named. At the end of the 19th - beginning of the 20th centuries, summer cottages and resort villages were built on the shores of the bay. According to one of them - Omega - the bay received the household name of the same name. The round bay has a sandy bottom, which is why earlier, at the beginning of the 20th century, it had another name - Sandy.

The recreational use of Kruglaya Bay was associated with the healing mud, which was mined on the southern and southwestern shores of the bay until the middle of the 20th century. In the 80s of the last century, the deposits of healing mud were destroyed by the authorities for some unknown reason and covered with earth.

In Soviet times, the all-Union sanatorium-preventorium "Omega" was located here. With the formation of the state "Independent Ukraine", the sanatorium was transformed into a Ukrainian military hospital.

The eastern coast and the adjacent water area of the Round Bay in the 40s of the twentieth century were used as a hydro-aerodrome, which had the name "Sevastopol-V". Later, the hydro aerodrome was liquidated (according to unofficial data, due to unexplained interference with radio communications in the area). At present, on this shore there is a military repair helicopter plant, a yacht club and the city beach "Omega", with a length of 700 m... The coast is dotted with cafes, bars and discos.

Due to the shallow depth and the particular direction of the winds in the bay, the water here quickly warms up and becomes suitable for swimming earlier than on other beaches of the city. The main disadvantage of the beaches of Kruglaya Bay is not very clear water, especially by the middle of the day, from suspended particles of sand, fine debris and algae, which cover the sandy bottom of the bay.

An emergency sewage runoff is discharged into the bay, as a result of which the beach is often closed for sanitary and epidemiological reasons.

Bay in poetry

I live in Sevastopol. In Omega Bay
Where the waves are fun like dolphins
At dawn, tired of playing and running,
Slightly swaying, backs warm in the sun ...

The sky was opened with a pink-blue umbrella,
Seagulls, screaming violently, scurry over the water,
And in the distance, moored to the horizon
Three destroyers and a cruiser are on patrol.

The Kruglaya Bay, in the popular way - Omega, was practically not used for a long time due to the shallow depths and the weak development of the city in the western direction. Today it is well known to all Ukrainian yachtsmen, helicopter pilots and visiting holiday-makers.

The first is on the basis of Olympic training - the yacht club "Yug", where most of the sailing competitions in Ukraine are held, and in sports camps, when, training at sea, athletes live at the very base.

The second - at the aircraft plant, where helicopters are repaired, especially in recent times - for Ukrainian pilots who fulfill some requests from the UN.

The third - to the cheerful bars-restaurants on the western coast of the bay, working here around the clock to the delight of summer vacationers, leaving their worries at home and gaining strength with us.

On the western coast of the bay there was once a wonderful children's summer camp "Omega", in the 70s of the last century it was difficult to get there. There is a beautiful sandy beach here, and most importantly, children were taught to swim.

Now on this territory on the western bank "shalmans" have spread their tents, and I cannot say anything good about them.

In the south, the bays are shallow, and here it smells so unpleasantly of rotting algae, like in no other bay of Sevastopol.

But there is a plus in shallow water: there is simply freedom for those who are just learning to sail on sailboards. At the beginning of the bay, with east side near the helicopter plant, there was once the base of the vocational school "Yunost". Under the director Arkady Solomonovich Sivaks, she truly took off to a height. On 8 yalov went out with the children to the sea, rowing and sailing. Now in this place - the base of anchorage of small vessels.

Kruglaya bay, shallow and beautiful story cannot boast. And yet ... In 1912 it was used as a testing ground for bombing and designing new aircraft bombs, more precisely, their plumage. The bay was also partially used by hydroaviation.

Iosif Yemelyanovich Bezrodny, in whose memory sailing competitions for a 30-mile distance are held in Sevastopol, wrote in his memoirs in 1964 that the gunboat Uralets ran aground near the left bank of the Kruglaya Bay. "Uralets" was a ship of the Black Sea series, it was built at the Sevastopol transport plant of the ROPiT company. It happened on 11/12/1913. On December 1, 1913, the boat sailed to Greece and brought the Greek Queen on board to Yalta to visit the Russian Tsar Nicholas II. The princess thanked the crew with money and the Greek "Metaxa", the crew already got drunk in Yalta and began to behave defiantly. Because of this, the team was quickly sent to Sevastopol, but the "Uralets" fell into a heavy fog and instead of Sevastopol went to Kacha, and then safely sat on the coastal stones of the Krugla Bay.

Then it was even more fun. In the morning the Romanov family with the Greek guests on the royal yacht "Standart" was to visit Sevastopol, sailing by sea. And in order for the royal people to be unable to contemplate the unpleasant incident that happened - a ship stranded by a drunken misunderstanding, they did not think of anything better how to drag it deeper into the bay and blow it up. So a 67-meter ship - a three-masted gunboat - took off into the sky.

Joseph Yemelyanovich then worked as a boatswain on a collector ship, and, as he writes, they had to collect for three weeks all that was left of the boat for metal throughout the bay. Such is the sad and slightly funny story.

During the war, on the site of the helicopter plant there were aircraft repair shops - the only military facility on the coast of the bay in those years. April 24, 1942 is a sad date in the history of Sevastopol and the Round Bay. In the morning, six Junkers-88 bombed the workshops, and together with numerous workshop workers, 34-year-old Commander of the Black Sea Fleet Air Force Major General of Aviation Nikolai Ostryakov and his Deputy Major General of Aviation Fyodor Korobkov were killed ... Both were buried in the Kommunarov cemetery.

Before the appearance of Russian sailors on the shores of the Sevastopol bays, on the western side of the coast to the very Heracles peninsula, there were Kherson choirs - agricultural lands of the ancient Chersonesites. They can be clearly seen on aerial photography of 1942-1944, taken during the siege of Sevastopol by German pilots. All farmlands had low, 1.5 meters, walls along which grapes were grown.

During the construction of the so-called. Of "presidential" houses near Kruglaya Bay, almost all antique rarities were buried under the wheels of powerful dump trucks, as well as ancient roadleading to Balaklava. And about Ivan, who does not remember kinship, by the way, was written in "Glory of Sevastopol" at that time.

Under the USSR, there were mud lakes with healing mud, but the city did not find its enthusiasts in order to preserve them, and the mud lakes, which the ancient geographer Strabo wrote about, also turned out to be rolled under the asphalt.

... A small cozy Kruglaya bay with a romantic folk name Omega, with great opportunities for health improvement and sports, one of the first bays towards the Chersonesos lighthouse deservedly enjoys special love among the Sevastopol residents. And therefore, each of the townspeople, I suppose, would be interesting to know some historical details of what happened here in recent and ancient times. However, the deeds of representatives of many generations of people, simply indifferent or from among those who are inclined to use a telescope as a bat, alas, have caused great irreparable damage to this bay.
