There are two active volcanoes on the island. The ash that is formed during their eruption ends up on the beaches. The eastern coast is closest to volcanoes, so the sand is black. In the north, it has a more gray tint. In general, in Bali, white sand beaches can be found only on the Bukit Peninsula and small islets located nearby (Nusa Penida, Lembongan, Gili). On the southern coast - in Kuta and Seminyak - the sand is yellow-gray. In Sanur and Nusa Dua it is white and golden, but it is not natural, but imported.
The structure of the sand is also different. Black volcanic - mostly small, sticks to a wet body and pukam. Waves
The island is not called a mecca for surfers for nothing. Due to the special structure of the bottom and coral reefs near the coast, quite high waves are formed on the local coasts.
They are divided into three types:

- Gentle waves (Spilling waves) - typical for the coast with a slight slope of the bottom, do not form pipes, suitable for beginner surfers

The height and type of wave depends on the ebb and flow, the direction of the wind. In the southwestern part of the island, the waves are higher in the dry season, since southeastern winds blow here at this time. On the opposite coast, the ocean is more turbulent during the rainy season, due to the south-westerly winds. High waves are more typical for the southern tip of the island. The best in this sense are the beaches of the Bukit, Kuta and Seminyak peninsulas.
However, you can also find calm places with small waves. Most of them are located in the north of the island, in the area of the Lovina resort. There are good places on the east and southeast coast - first of all, this is the Sanur resort. There are low waves on some beaches of the Bukit Peninsula - Padang Padang, Jimbar an, Nusa Dua.
Purity
Interestingly, you can find completely opposite reviews about the same beach. Some visitors write that it is almost perfectly clean, others talk about terrible dirt. In fact, it all depends on the location, infrastructure and season.
Conventionally, I would divide the beaches by cleanliness into several categories:
- The protected beaches near the hotels are the cleanest. Garbage from the coast is removed several times a day.
- Public beaches with well-developed infrastructure are fairly clean. Garbage is cleaned up in the morning and in the evening.
- Public beaches with poor infrastructure - cleanliness depends on the time of day and season. There is less garbage in the mornings than in the evening, it is very dirty during the rainy season.
- Wild secluded beaches - they can be either clean or dirty - it all depends on the location and the season. But on such coasts, garbage left by tourists is less common. Most often it is just algae.
It is important to note that during the peak of the rainy season (from late January to early March), almost all beaches are muddy. The sea brings a lot of garbage, and the coast does not have time to clean up even at prestigious resorts. Of course, tourists who have visited one of the beaches at this time will not leave the best reviews about it.
There is one more nuance - according to the local religion, the ocean is considered a sacred place. People come here to make offerings to the gods. Fishermen do not go to sea without this ceremony. On many beaches you can see small altars where the locals bring their ritual gifts in the form of wreaths of flowers, traces, twigs and fruits. Especially many offerings are brought on the Balinese New Year, when traditionally religious ceremonies are held by the sea. Over time, the wreaths dry up, are carried by the wind, float into the sea, but then come back.

But the remnants of the ritual offerings cannot be compared with what the vacationers leave on the shore. Bottles, bags, plastic dishes - all this at high tide again ends up on the coast. Some beaches have concrete piers. Garbage, adjoining these piers, lingers for a long time, interfering with swimming.

The infrastructure of the beaches on the island is very different. In the guarded areas near the hotels, the principle is "all inclusive", here you can find any services. There are many public beaches with fully or partially developed infrastructure. There are also completely wild places where there is nothing but sea and sand.

I advise you to choose the left side of the beach for swimming, in GoogleMaps it is Pantai muaya , we parked the car for free near the temple (-8.782889, 115.161914). By the way, drive in all coordinates with a minus sign, since Bali is located below the equator. Sun beds for money, but we did not take. Jimbaran Beach is also known for fish restaurants, they are located closer to its center, choose any one by looking into indoor aquariums with catch. People gather at 17 to take the trump seats and enjoy the sunset (in winter it is at 18:30). The shore there is rocky, I did not find a place for sunbathing and there were big waves, but the place is damn beautiful and wild. Maybe it's quieter at low tide 
Balangan beach
Balangan beach- one of the most photogenic beaches, so many wedding photographers hang out on the cape (-8.790441, 115.125056). The ceremonies are symbolic, with a wedding arch, a white dress - obviously just for the sake of a photo session. 
If you go down to the beach from the opposite end (-8.793569, 115.122900), then you will find yourself in a simple eatery, you can immediately rent a board. But the entrance to the sea here is unpleasant, let the photo with white sand fascinate you ... but there are many boulders in the water, and the waves knock you off your feet. This place is more for surfing. 
I have been here twice, and I cannot say that it is pleasant to swim. On the other side of the beach, we found a place where we could swim near the shore.
Canggu Beach
We lived in this town for 5 days, having booked a hotel room Sunset Villa Bali, which was deserted due to a recent volcanic eruption. For 800 rubles a day for 2 people we got complete privacy, comfort and a pool with a kitchen. In the morning we had breakfast at Hungry bird coffee, what a gorgeous cappuccino there! We lived 7 minutes walk from Finns Beach Club, the beach there is long, there are many small bars where you can lie in exchange for juice and beer. The sand here is no longer white, but gray, but pleasant for walking. And swimming in Canggu is difficult because of the big waves, but it is a great place for surfing.

Gala's Beach or Nikko Beach
These beaches are very close ( on the map), there are respectable hotels along the road. And it was the best beach in Bali, moreover, deserted, there were no waves near the ocean, white sand of coral origin under our feet 🏜 We parked our car at the temple (-8.833364, 115.213052) and went down the steep steps. 
We found a deserted cave to relax in the shade, where there were sun loungers from a luxury hotel 🏖 and we brazenly used them! We swam with a mask, picked up seashells, listened to the sound of the ocean waves 🌊🐚🐳 I never ceased to thank the Agung volcano for the deserted Bali in December 😘 If you compare my vacation in 2016 and in 2017, then the island then and now is heaven and earth! 👏 If you are afraid to drive a bike and a car on the island, I advise you to take an individual excursion. - Sanur beach! I didn't even take a photo, there is a swamp, not the sea, swimming in shallow water with algae is still a pleasure. Don't waste your vacation at a retirement resort ...
- Padang Padang Beach, where the film "Eat, Pray, Love" was filmed (report about it here). In the photo it seems that this is a heavenly place, but there were so many people that they did not get a buzz. Turbid water, although the entrance is pleasantly sloping. The entrance is paid - 10 thousand rupees (70 euro cents), parking is paid, the cafe on the beach is sloppy, dirty. We went to the north of Bali not for the beaches, but for the peace and low prices. It's funny, but this edge is underdeveloped, asphalt was laid only in the early 2000s. But we really liked the calm sea, however, it is slightly colder than the Indian Ocean (maybe +26). We booked a room in Bayu Cottages Hotel for 12 euros for two with breakfast, and were alone again! Of course, in season and not with an erupting volcano, it is more expensive 😜 The Bali Sea is ideal for swimming, fishing, snorkeling and diving. We rested on Lipakh Beach, a secluded cove with an incredible underwater world! The color of the sand is black, it is very fine, but at the entrance to the sea there is white sand, so the water is transparent.

From Ubud, we got here at least 2 hours along narrow roads and jungle, renting a car for 10 euros per day. I can also advise taking an excursion to the north of Bali to see Amed, swim on the beach, visit the water palaces and the Lempuyang temple overlooking. We saw him splashing around in the hotel pool. From there you can see the sea, and it takes 15 seconds to go down to it. 
The most interesting thing in Amed is snorkeling. We had our own snorkel mask, but here every little boy offers them for rent. So are the boats. Also, for 300 thousand rupees (18 euros), you can go fishing at dawn. Diving enthusiasts also come here to dive to sunken ships. 
The big plus of the north of Bali over the tourist south was the cheap fish. Once bought from a fisherman from a boat for 50 thousand 3 pieces (3 euros). And then all the days we ate in Amed restore, I ordered mackerel with rice and vegetables for only 2 euros 
Beach at Les Village
In the Tejakula area, we settled in an amazing hotel with a diving center Sea Communities - Segara Lestari Villas, we were brought in by accident thanks to Arnbnbi, after reading the reviews. Everything is fine in Less Village - the silence, the lack of tourists and the integrity of the locals, huge portions of food from the hostess for dinner, coconut, mango and rambutan plantations, the sound of the sea even in our room. But no beach although the black sand mixed with huge stones did not frighten the local children, they swam. We lived in the eco-village for 5 days, and still were satisfied with the "other Bali" 
Lovina beach in Bali
The beaches in the north of Bali are generally not encouraging, there are only a few civilized and suitable for swimming. We read about Lovina in the north of Bali, arrived, and there is a shallow, muddy and gray sea, the Sea of Azov ... On the map we found a civilized beach for swimming - Spice Beach Club Bali, having paid a fresh watermelon as much as 3 euros, the sea here was not happy either, but they used sun loungers and a toilet.
Locals pestered boat rentals to watch dolphins, but I see them in Montenegro in the Tivat Bay, where we have a yacht moored. We left Lovina to swim in the hot springs
