The first Airbus A320neo in Russia. Airbus A320neo: best-selling and most competitive

The Airbus A320neo is one of the newest airliners of our time. It is an improved copy of its predecessor of the same name. They are distinguished by the prefix neo in the name, which stands for New Engine Option - "new improved engine".

The A320neo is a narrow-body aircraft. It can accommodate more seats or increase the width of the aisle. Airbus has a whole family of such liners that are in great demand among airlines.

Interior layout

As is usually the case, the layout of the economy and business class aircraft varies. They may differ noticeably among different airlines, so it is best to consider the standard one offered by the manufacturer Airbus.

Compared to its predecessor, Airbus A320, the interior of the new airliner has been significantly improved. It has an advanced filtration system to prevent unpleasant odors. The air in the cabin is completely renewed every 2 minutes. For lighting, modern energy-saving diodes are used.

Business Class

As standard, the airliner has 164 passenger seats, 8 of which are in business class. All chairs are double, leather and soft. Each is equipped with a reclining backrest, but there is no footrest or reclining head cushion. Each armrest has a USB port and even a full power socket.

Economy class

Compared to the previous version of the aircraft, the economy class has been significantly updated for the neo model. There are even more different innovations here than in business class. Separately, it is worth highlighting the stand for tablets and smartphones, which slides out of the back of the chair in front and is fixed with a rubber fixer on top. Thanks to this innovation, passengers can watch a movie on their gadget, which will allow them to pass the flight much faster.

Also, sockets and USB ports have been added here, similar to the business class, but with a slight difference: they are located on the back of the previous chair. This is very convenient, because in the old Airbus A320 the socket was under the seat. Because of this, many passengers did not even know what they could use.

Updated personal control panels for passengers on the ceiling. Reading light is now more comfortable for the human eye and easier to get used to than it used to be. Lamps installed in luminaires can last much longer and use energy-saving technology.

The best places

As for the comfortable seats on the plane of this model, the seats in the 6th row (1st in economy) will be more or less acceptable. There is a partition between economy and business class, so the likelihood of someone throwing the back of their seat on you is reduced to zero. Also, this row is the first to receive power when the flight attendant begins to carry it around the cabin.

And now about the negative aspects of these places. Firstly, even though you have enough room for your knees, you will not be able to stretch your legs to full length, again because of the partition. Also, several seats in the 10th row, located in the middle and near the aisle, can be attributed to luxury chairs.

Seats in rows 24 and 25 are considered the worst. This is especially true of the latter. The backs of the seats will not recline because of the wall behind, and for most passengers, the close proximity to the toilet causes considerable discomfort.

Other modifications of NEO aircraft

The A320 isn't the only improved model. The manufacturer has improved almost the entire family of aircraft:

  • Airbus A319neo. An airliner used to carry small passenger traffic over long distances. On average, 150 passengers can be accommodated on board, and the flight distance is 7500 km;
  • Airbus A321neo. The aircraft is equipped with the longest fuselage in the entire family. The board can accommodate 220 people. Maximum flight range - 6800 km;
  • A330neo. The newest model, which is just being developed, but already several airlines from different countries have pre-ordered it. Designed for 287 seats. Has a wide fuselage. The main competitor is the Boeing 787 Dreamliner. The delivery of aircraft according to the orders made has been carried out since the beginning of 2018.

Specifications

As noted earlier, the Airbus A320 neo is equipped with new modern engines that have reduced fuel consumption and reduced emissions of harmful substances into the atmosphere. The indicator is 50% lower than that allowed by international standards, which is good news.

Capacity, dimensions, weight

The aircraft has the following data:

  • Length - 37.6 m;
  • Height - 11.8 m;
  • Wing area - 122.4 square meters;
  • Span - 35.8 m;
  • Maximum takeoff weight - 73.5-78 thousand kg;
  • Maximum weight without fuel - 62.8-64.3 thousand kg;
  • Maximum landing weight - 64.5-66 thousand kg;
  • Fuel tank capacity - 23.7-26.5 thousand liters;
  • Number of seats - 180;
  • The number of seats (economy and business class) - 150;
  • Cabin length - 27.5 m;
  • The width of the cabin is 3.7 m.

Flight characteristics:

  • Flight distance with maximum load - 6850 m;
  • Maximum speed - 890 km / h;
  • Maximum cruising speed - 830 km / h;
  • Maximum flight altitude - 12 thousand m;
  • Engines: CFMI Leap-1A, PW1100G-JM.

History of creation

As early as December 1, 2010, the Airbus manufacturer made an official statement that work had begun on the creation of a modernized A320neo aircraft. 4 years later, on July 1, the first rollout of the aircraft took place

During the design, it was thought that the Airbus would significantly outperform its main competitor Boeing with its line of narrow-body Boeing 737MAX aircraft. Composite materials and various aluminum alloys were used in the design, which made it possible to maintain fuel consumption and weight, as in the predecessor A320.

The first flight of the airliner with improved engines also took place in 2014, on September 25, from the Blagnac airport in Toulouse (France). It also houses one of the Airbus factories and a test base for checking airliners. The very first Airbus A320neo was purchased and used by the famous German airline Lufthansa. The event took place on January 21, 2016.

Where is it produced

The aircraft is produced directly by the Airbus S.A.S. plant located in Toulouse. The activity of the enterprise is dispersed in several countries at once: Germany, Spain, Great Britain and France. Airbus President Fabrice Bergier has been in office since 2012. The headquarters and registered office are also located in Toulouse.

Most of Airbus' needs for titanium are provided by Russian manufacturers. Since 2016, after the conclusion of the relevant agreement, the company has been assembling Helicopters H135 helicopters on the territory of our country.

News, prospects, interesting facts

Personal orders for the plane began to be carried out even before it made its first flight. The very first customer was an American airline called Virgin Airlines. In Russia, the first was S7, which took possession of 10 modified aircraft at once. For passengers, it looks almost indistinguishable from the A320. The new owner painted all the liners in his “corporate” green color.

In total, more than 13,000 narrow-body a320neo aircraft have been sold worldwide. There are slightly more than 400 customers among them. These numbers speak volumes and the modified Airbus family is currently the most popular of all the aircraft produced by Airbus S.A.S. The production is scheduled for 7 years ahead and the number of orders is constantly growing.

There is also a lot of excitement around the A330neo, which will be delivered at the end of 2017. The aircraft is designed for both medium and long distances. It has more capacity than its counterparts in the family: 287 seats for fully economy class cabins and 257 seats for those equipped with business class. This will reduce fuel consumption by 14% and operating costs by 8%.

Airbus A320neo- deep modernization of the family of narrow-body medium-range airliners Airbus A320. NEO stands for New Engine Option. The modernization program was launched by Airbus in 2010 and involved replacing the outdated power plant with new engines of the Pratt & Whitney PW1000G and CFM International LEAP-1A families. Non-re-engined aircraft of the A320 family continue to be produced under the A320ceo (Current Engine Option) designation.

Story

By the end of the first decade of the 21st century, Airbus had completed work on its flagship A380 airliner and continued work on the newest A350. However, in order to improve its position in competition with Boeing, as well as with liners that in the future were to be created in Russia () and China (), Airbus decided to modernize its most massive aircraft - the family.

Back in 2006, Airbus deployed the A320E (Enhanced) program. The program involved making improvements to the design and systems of the aircraft in order to achieve a 4-5% increase in economic performance. It was planned to achieve this by installing new winglets (2%), improving the airframe aerodynamics (1%), as well as reducing the total weight of the aircraft and installing a new passenger compartment. It was also possible to reduce fuel consumption by modifying the classic CFM56 and V2500 engines.

However, over time, it became clear that this was not enough and it was necessary to carry out more radical work on the liners. The creation of new aircraft was not considered, the A320s were created in the late 1980s and are considered quite young aircraft. Therefore, it was decided to modernize a number of systems and install completely new engines (hence the name NEO - New Engine Option - New engine option. At this time, Pratt & Whitney, as well as its competitor, CFM International concern, created new generation engines for medium-haul liners.

At this time, it was believed that Airbus would be able to sell about 4,000 new-generation aircraft within 15 years, and the cost of the program would cost approximately one billion euros. At the same time, the cost of the updated aircraft will exceed the cost of its predecessor (CEO model) by $ 6 million. In addition to more expensive engines, this cost includes an increase in the cost of the airframe ($ 3.5 million) and the installation of sharklets (about $ 0.9 million).

Work on the new model was carried out at a fairly high rate. The first airliner A320neo took off in 2014 - 4 years after the initiation of the NEO program. The certification was carried out using several aircraft equipped with both Pratt & Whitney PW1100G and CFM International LEAP-1A engines. During testing, aircraft with these engines flew about 4000 hours.

A320neo aircraft entered regular flights in the spring of 2016, the enlarged A321neo model arrived to customers after half a year, and half a year later, the aircraft of the younger A319neo model began to be delivered.

Construction and improvements

The general design of the A320neo is similar to the base A320 - it is a low-wing jet with a low sweep wing and two engines suspended on pylons. Aircraft of different generations are 95% similar. However, the modernization program has made many changes.

Sharklets

Airbus launched the new wingtips project in 2009. These large tips are structurally similar to the new CFRP tips from the one created at the time. Due to their external resemblance to shark fins, they became known as Sharklet - a compilation of the word Shark (Shark) and Winglet (the common name for wingtips).

Sharklets are manufactured by KAAD (Korean Air Aerospace Division). They have a height of 2.5 meters and a total weight of 200 kg. On a standard flight over a distance of 2,800 km, they reduce fuel consumption by 3.5%. At the same time, over the entire period of aircraft operation, they reduce carbon dioxide emissions into the atmosphere by 700 tons.

Salon

The liners' salons have also undergone major modernization. In addition to purely design changes, the efficiency of the use of internal space was increased (first of all, the luggage racks were increased). The new cabin is equipped with more efficient air filters and catalytic converters to neutralize any unpleasant odors that may enter the aircraft. All lighting is made using energy efficient diodes. The cabin is controlled by the crew using touch panels.

In addition, an optional Cabin-Flex configuration has been developed for the liners. It involves the installation of modified doors and allows more flexible changes to the layout of the rear galley and toilets, as well as accommodate 20 more passengers on the A321 and 9 more passengers on the A320 without sealing the seating. The installation of new doors increases the dry weight of the liners by 100 kg.

At the same time, the fuel efficiency per passenger seat increases by 6%, and in the full configuration of the NEO family, the efficiency increase reaches 20%.

Engines

The main difference between the NEO family and the previous generation is the completely new engines. They are also the main visual difference - the LEAP-1A and PW1100G models are much larger than their predecessors: the old engines had a fan diameter of 68 inches (about 173 cm), while the diameter of the new ones reaches 81 inches (more than 205 cm).

In 2010, at an air show in Singapore, Airbus announced the start of a tender for the selection of new engines for the NEO family. The choice, in the end, fell on the two most advanced new engines at that time, CFM LEAP-1A and P&W PW1100G. New power plants burn 16% less fuel, however, their efficiency has decreased by 1-2% due to the fact that they are installed not on a completely new airliner, but on modernized, but, nevertheless, old aircraft. At the same time, Airbus, thanks to the new engines, also managed to reduce the maintenance costs of the power plant by 20% in comparison with the old models.

The amount of fuel in the aircraft has practically not changed and, thanks to the lower consumption in flight, the A320neo can carry 2 tons more cargo or fly 950 km further.

Engine models are selected by the customer. The first flying A320neo was powered by PW1100G-JM engines. He received FAA certification in 2014.

Both new A320neo power plants are much quieter than their predecessors (the takeoff noise level does not exceed 83 - 85 dB - for older engines this figure exceeds 100 dB).

Modifications

Airbus serially produces 3 modifications of the NEO family. These are the A319neo, A320neo and A321neo models. Due to low demand for the youngest A318 model, it was decided not to produce it (at least until potential customers appeared).

A319 neo

The Airbus A319neo is the youngest model in the family with a short fuselage and a capacity of up to 160 passengers. Qatar Airways was supposed to be the starting customer, however, in the contract it replaced the A319 order with an A320 order. Not operated on regular flights (for 2017).

A320neo is the basic and most popular model. The aircraft made its maiden flight in September 2014. Has a capacity of up to 195 passengers.

The liner was handed over to the launch customer - Lufthansa airline in 2016. After six months of operation, it was announced that the airline had achieved a 20% reduction in passenger costs and 99.7% operational reliability for 8 aircraft.

As of March 2017, there were 88 airliners in the fleets of 20 airlines: 49 with PW1000G engines and 39 with CFM LEAP-1A engines. The planes made more than 37 thousand flights and spent more than 57 thousand hours in the air (on average, about 1.5 hours per flight).

The A321neo is the oldest and most spacious model in the family. In a 1-class layout, it can accommodate up to 240 passengers. With an increased mass, the aircraft has a reinforced landing gear and an increased wing area.

The plane made its first flight in February 2016. Until 2017, the aircraft received EASA and FAA certificates with both powerplant options.

The first operator of this model was Virgin America (184 seats in two classes with LEAP engines).

A321 LR

In addition to the A321neo, Airbus is developing an extended range version. The plane is designed for landing 164 passengers. The decrease in capacity is compensated by the installation of additional fuel tanks. In this configuration, the aircraft has a range of 7,400 km - more than at lower operating costs (by 27%). The aircraft is scheduled to enter the market in 2018.

Orders and deliveries

The A320neo family was announced in 2010. By 2012, Airbus had orders for 2,000 aircraft - a record contracting rate in the history of commercial aviation. For 2017, the order book exceeds 5000 units from 72 operators around the world, of which more than a hundred have already been delivered to the fleets of 24 airlines.

In 2010, the European aircraft manufacturer Airbus announced the start of design work on the A320neo. This narrow-body jet is the result of a deep redesign of the basic version of the A320.

At the presentation of the A320neo in 2011 in Paris, Airbus struck deals totaling more than sixty billion dollars.

In 2014, the first specimen soared into the skies of France. Two years later, the German carrier Lufthansa received this new product. The cost of the liner is up to $ 110 million.

The A320neo family also includes the A319neo (short) and A321neo (long).

Airbus A320neo is an improved model with a fundamentally new category of engines. The installation of large (over 2 meters in diameter) LEAP-1A or PW1100G motors on the aircraft contributes to the following changes:

  • reduction of kerosene consumption by 15 - 17%
  • reduction of operating costs by 8 - 10%
  • reduction of harmful emissions into the natural atmosphere by more than 10%
  • noise reduction
  • increase in flight range by 960 kilometers
  • increase in carrying capacity by 2000 kilograms

The glider itself was also modernized: sharklets (shark fin) were installed at the tip of the wings, the air conditioning system was reworked, and the luggage compartment was made larger.

According to manufacturers, thanks to the latest engines and unique wing tips (2.4 meters), maintenance and operating costs will be reduced by almost a quarter compared to the base model. The Airbus A320neo has the lowest noise level among the aircraft in its class.

Externally, the A320neo almost completely repeats the appearance of the A320 model. The difference was the widespread use of composites (fiberglass and carbon fiber reinforced plastic) and aluminum alloys. This made the design more durable, lightweight and ergonomic.

The aircraft has modern cockpit equipment. Thomson - CSF supplied a unique software package. "Intelligent filling" displays data on LCD monitors, warns of abnormal situations. All equipment is certified and meets the requirements of the ARINC 700 standard.

Changes in the interior of the salon

Improvements have also been made to the passenger compartment. The backlighting is done using the current LEDs. The interior decoration will satisfy the most demanding taste.

The row spacing has increased, creating more space for the passenger. There are now stands for gadgets (tablets, smartphones, laptops), sockets and USB connectors: two for three row chairs. These changes affected both the business class and the economic salon. Press, booklets are placed in the pockets at the top of the chair. The kitchen areas have also become much larger, which is beneficial for flight attendants.

A distinctive feature and advantage of the new liner is the absence of toilets directly behind the last row. Now two bathrooms are equipped in the rear of the aircraft.

Overview of places (diagram)

In the Airbus A320neo, the first two rows (8 seats) are reserved for business class. Location - two chairs in two rows.

Economy class can accommodate 156 people. 3/3 single pass seating system. Compared to the A320, there are six more seats.

The best rows are 3 (no seats in front), 10, 11 (emergency exit seats). In the twenty-eighth row, the backs of the seats do not have the ability to recline.

Flight parameters of the A320neo model:

  • Wingspan - 35.8 meters
  • Machine length - 37.57 meters
  • Aircraft height - 11.76 meters
  • Takeoff weight - 73900 kilograms
  • Motor type (2 pieces) - LEAP-1A
  • Maximum thrust - 2 * 120.6 kgf
  • Maximum speed - 876 km / h
  • Hover speed (cruising) - 833 km / h
  • Flight range - 6500 kilometers
  • Flight altitude (maximum ceiling) - 12,000 kilometers
  • Crew - 2 pilots
  • Useful load (passenger capacity) - 189 people in economy class or up to 150 people in a two-class layout.

Last news:

In 2017, S7 Airlines (a brand of the Russian air carrier Siberia) acquired the first A320neo. It is planned to buy 16 copies in total. The car is painted in the traditional, bright green color of the company. Passengers have already appreciated the offered level of comfort. It is noted that these airbuses will form the basis of the S7 fleet in the future. In the spring of 2018, S7 Airlines will begin direct flights between Moscow and the Spanish resort island of Tenerife. There will be flights from Domodedovo airport twice a week.

The Russian holding "Engineering" has modernized the paint hangar, it is here that the liners for the S7 fleet are painted. On the basis of the S7 Engineering Aviation Training Center, technical specialists are being trained who will be able to service the A320neo airbuses. Contractual relations have been concluded for the performance of heavy repairs at the sites of this technical holding.

The aviation conglomerate Airbus at its plant in China plans to bring the monthly number of A320 aircraft produced to five copies. At the beginning of 2020, this figure will increase to six. A corresponding bilateral agreement has already been signed.

Prospects and competition in the sky

Airbus plans to manufacture and sell more than 4,700 of its A320 aircraft to commercial customers over the next fifteen years. Back in 2011, it signed an unprecedented contract with the Malaysian carrier AirAsia for the supply of two hundred vehicles.

The growing demand in the world for conquering regional distances laid the foundation for new developments of the world's leading aircraft manufacturers. Many commercial carriers are starting to phase out wide-body airliners. The most popular are twin-engine airliners with a narrow fuselage. There is a widespread replacement of heavy, high-budget cars with more economical models.

The main competitors of the A320neo are the newest small and medium-sized airliners Boeing 737MAX, Bombardier CSeries, Comac C919 and MC - 21. All models are extremely promising and comfortable.

The aircraft manufacturer Airbus has a huge number of orders for the A320neo, as well as other aircraft in the family: A319, A320 and A321.

Analyzing the first years of operation of this machine and the rate of receipt of applications, we can call this liner the leader in continental transportation.

Alexcheban (popular travel blogger): On July 21, 2017, the first Airbus A320neo was handed over to the airline at the Delivery Center of the Airbus plant in Toulouse in France. This is the first Airbus in the new livery and became.

At first I was a little upset about the lack of silhouettes of people in the new livery, but how perfect it looks now! Couldn't stop looking :)

Search for cheap tickets on all airlines:

Mansur Badrakov, flight director of S7 Airlines in the cockpit:

The first Airbus A320neo in Russia is already on regular flights of S7 Airlines between Moscow and Novosibirsk!

Quicker:)

5 Reasons to Fly a Modern Airplane in Russia

Convenient schedule, comfortable seat on the plane with adequate legroom, bright and quiet cabin and… low ticket price! All of this can be purchased in a single flexible tariff with various options and from one airline. Isn't that what the passenger appreciates when he makes his choice ?!

The usual cabin of the plane, where I did not expect to see anything special, but I confess that these FIVE reasons do not leave a choice, a meek one and a half hour flight will fly on board this plane in an instant, and you will not have time to get tired here in 4-5 hours above the clouds. The first Airbus A320neo in Russia, an example of future technologies that make it possible to fly more comfortably and cheaper today.

Welcome aboard?!

And the luggage racks have a very stylish green illumination in the color of the livery.

2. Rest in flight

Only modern technologies allow us to make things we are used to lighter, more elegant, thinner and lighter. And, therefore, reduce costs.
The cabin of the A320 family aircraft is 18 cm wider than that of the Boeing 737 and 737 MAX, which allows for wider seats or a wider aisle for quick turnaround of the aircraft at the airport and for more convenient transportation of passengers and flight attendants with trolleys during the flight.

The seats in the salon of the first A320neo S7 are leather, black and very stylish. I like the new brand and the livery so much, the color combination here is successful and practical. The leather interior is worse on long flights, but on the A320 / B737 it is quite logical, because it is more prone to wear with frequent maintenance than fabric upholstery.

And also - pockets for magazines and safety instructions here upstairs, I'm tall and really hate it when valuable useful centimeters at the knee level are hidden by the logbooks. After all, I put my things in a special bag on the floor.

Pay attention to the space under the chairs. In modern aircraft, there are thin partitions, there are no blocks of the onboard entertainment system, even the life jacket is “recessed” into the depth of the seat. You can place carry-on luggage under the seat; the new aircraft has 20% more space below for it!

The A320neo of S7 Airlines has 156 economy class seats and 8 business class seats.

The business salon has also been updated! Fewer airlines are ordering a configuration with real business class seats, preferring flexible reconfiguration of the economy class cabin. Everything here is gorgeous! The backrest and footrest are reclining, there are USB outputs and sockets.

The business class salon is separated by a curtain from the economy class, and not by a blank wall. Therefore, I advise you to choose an economy seat in the third row, these are “extra-space” seats.

I don't like the first row, my legs rest against the wall.

A few words about the microclimate - Airbus engineers have developed a special catalytic converter for unpleasant odors, which guarantees fresh air in the cabin. The air in the A320neo is completely replaced every 2 minutes!

4. Fly quieter

Do you know how to distinguish the new Airbus A320neo from the rest? The size of the engines - they are huge! Look at the ratio of human height to engine size in the photographs. The Airbus A320neo is available with Pratt & Whitney or CFM LEAP-X engines. S7 Airlines A320neo is powered by Pratt & Whitney Pure Power PW1100G-JM engines. These engines are quieter, so the noise level in the cabin is up to 20% lower!

This is especially felt during takeoff, the noise of the A320neo is more muffled and quieter in contrast to the “growling” A320ceo on takeoff.

And these are the Airbus A320 sharklets:

Airbus began installing new Sharklets on A319, A320 and A321 aircraft from the end of 2012. They are standard on all A320neo aircraft and can also be installed on A320 aircraft already in service.

The height of the sharklets is 2.4 meters, they are made of composite materials. Sharklets improve the aerodynamic characteristics of the aircraft and reduce drag by reducing the “stall” from the wing edge.

Sharklets cut fuel consumption by 4% on long routes, equivalent to 1,000 tonnes of CO2 emissions per plane per year. Sharklets increase the flight range by about 185 km or payload by 450 kg.

What does the first Airbus A320neo of S7 Airlines look like in a real flight, and not in pictures from presentations? Let's get a look.

↓ 2. A colleague got on one of the first Airbus A320neo (VQ-BCF) flights of S7 Airlines from Novosibirsk to Moscow. At my request, I shared photos - I will show you and save them here for history. I beg your pardon for the quality of the pictures (filmed on the phone), it's just interesting to look at this plane, which is significant for S7 Airlines, in real flight, and not only on beautiful cards from official presentations in Toulouse and Moscow. Externally, the A320neo differs from the usual A320s in larger engines (in the case of the S7, there is also a livery - neo is already in the new one, and all 320 S7s are in the old one). New engines seem to be less noisy, more environmentally friendly and economical. However, at launch and during takeoff it did not seem to us that the engines were less noisy than usual (we filmed takeoff at a distance of about 150 meters), on the contrary, the sound was more reminiscent of mighty wide-body airliners of the A330 type. However, it is said that inside the aircraft during flight, the noise is actually less than usual.

↓ 3. Safety card. There is slightly more legroom than the previous version.

↓ 4. Cups and napkins have not changed :) But in the chairs themselves there are sockets with a USB connector (there is no photo with them, unfortunately), you can recharge the gadget.

↓ 5. On the back of the chair at eye level there is a mount for a tablet or a phone - if anyone wants to watch a movie, it will come in handy. Although it is more convenient to put the laptop on the table and look at it, but suddenly you don't want to hang around with it and decide not to take it on a trip?

↓ 6. A320neo salon and spacious overhead bins.

↓ 7. The portholes are new and clean, great looking.

↓ 8. All A320neos are equipped with updated wingtips, which allow to reduce the cost of aircraft maintenance, as well as slightly increase the flight range (+150 km) or maximum load (+500 kg). Of course, they came up with a great idea to place the S7 logo on the sharklets - soon there will be a lot of such photos on Instagram.

Thank you for your attention.
