Geothermal Resort Blue Lagoon - fabulous, incredible beautiful place on the map of Iceland. This amazing lake with water, the shade of which combines a mixture of milk and incredible blue, attracts a large number of tourists to its expanses. Many guests of this Icelandic resort come here more than once.

Iceland's most famous spa resort

The healing properties of water were discovered by accident. Employees of a thermal power plant located near the lake, after bathing in it, began to notice that their health improves, hair and nails grow faster, excess weight goes away, and the skin is cleared of various rashes.

The observations confirmed their guesses. According to eyewitnesses, one patient with psoriasis, walking next to a hot one, slipped and fell into the water. The healing water worked wonders - the disease receded after a while. Then the city authorities called in scientists to study the properties of this reservoir.

The healing water of the Blue Lagoon

Studies have shown that milk-blue water contains various salts, minerals, clay, algae, and quartz. The temperature in the lake is kept at +37 degrees. The hydrogen content is 7.5%. And the content of mineral salts is almost 2.5%.

Under such conditions, with a large tourist flow (up to 300 thousand per year), a huge number of various bacteria should appear in the lake. But the Blue Lagoon keeps another secret - there are no bacteria here! This is another confirmation that the wonders of nature keep many puzzles and riddles.

Geothermal water helps to get rid of extra pounds, defeat cellulite, heals skin diseases. Various mineral salts have a beneficial effect on the entire body. Blue and greener algae, quartz has wonderful properties. The white clay that covers the bottom of the lake helps to get rid of skin and body problems.

Relax in one of the best spa resorts in Europe

The complex, located next to a geothermal lake, includes a clinic, a spa center, a restaurant, a shop selling excellent Blue Lagoon cosmetics, developed on the basis of local water, clay and mineral salts.

Guests of the "Blue Lagoon" can take a course of SPA procedures, which includes: body wraps based on algae, salt peeling, lymphatic drainage, various types of massage, mud baths. The Blue Lagoon line of cosmetics works wonders, making the skin smooth and velvety, smoothing wrinkles and clearing the surface of the body from scales and growths.

Patients of the dermatological clinic can stay in a room that meets all the requirements. The conclusion of the attending physician is obligatory, who recommends to undergo treatment in this particular sanatorium complex. Already after a week of taking the first procedures, there is a significant improvement in the patient with skin diseases.

The nature around this wonderful corner of nature also aids healing. Rocky coast, amazing, fumaroles, hot springs, fields covered with volcanic lava. And also - a noisy, colorful bird market, where many species of birds can be found.

The Blue Lagoon is a magnificent spa resort that has won the Blue Flag honorary award many times. This sign means the recognition of this complex as one of the most ecologically clean places on Earth. And in 2005 the magnificent Blue Lagoon was awarded the title of the Best Thermal Spa Resort and Medical Complex in the World! Pride - a wonderful SPA complex is always glad to see guests.

What could be more beautiful - to bask in a warm lake with azure water and admire the northern lights sparkling in the sky above the huge rocks ...

Blue Lagoon in Iceland photo

The Blue Lagoon, aka Blue Lagoon, was included this year in the list of 25 unique spa-complexes that are worth visiting not only for those who know how the abbreviation spa stands, but for everyone, everyone, everyone. I visited the Blue Lagoon in January of this year and am ready to honestly talk about the pros and cons of Iceland's most famous spa complex.

To begin with, the custom of spending evenings (and sometimes days) in thermal pools is instilled in Icelanders from infancy. In Reykjavik, thermal pools can be found at every turn, a visit (provided that you buy a subscription) costs around 1.5 euros, and all Icelanders consider it their duty to lie down in hot thermal water at least a couple of times a week under open air.

Photo: outdoor pool at Blue Lagoon

In the hot springs one can meet people of any age: from gray-haired old men to babies who cannot even sit; the rules for visiting the pools are standard: come, undress, take a shower, dry off, run out into the street and dive into the water. The only fundamental difference. In Iceland, before taking thermal baths, it is necessary not only to rinse in the shower, but also to wash our hair, and since our mother taught all of us in childhood that only suicides who decided to earn meningitis go out into the street with a wet head, the rule of washing their hair is very embarrassing for novice bathers. Oddly enough, you should not be afraid, the danger of catching a cold, and even more getting sinusitis or meningitis, is greatly exaggerated, at least from my own experience I was convinced that a wet head is not a hindrance to hot baths in the fresh air.

Photo: Thermal complex Blue Lagoon

Thermal complex Blue Lagoon It differs from all other pools not only in its surroundings, but also in that the water of the Blue Lagoon is rich in clay, algae and all kinds of microorganisms useful for health and, as a consequence, beauty. Due to clay and algae, the water in the lagoon has a characteristic blue hue, hence the name of the complex. The Blue Lagoon was discovered, one might say, by accident. The fact is that in Iceland, renewable natural energy sources are used to generate electricity, mainly volcanic water.

Near the place where the Blue Lagoon spa-complex is now open, a power plant was also built, by the way, it functions to this day. Soon, water of an unusual blue color began to beat near the power plant. Scientists became interested in a curious natural phenomenon, after a short research they found out that local water, as well as clay, algae and microorganisms, can improve the condition of the skin, hair and nails. Since the principle of "everything in business" is close to the Icelanders, a spa-complex was erected at the place of the fault, and after a while production was also established.

In the photo: the famous photo of Bjork with his son in the Blue Lagoon

To visit the Blue Lagoon, it is better to set aside a whole day. Firstly, there is a thermal bath outside Reykjavik, about 30 minutes away by car. If you have not rented a car, then bus tickets to the Blue Lagoon can be bought at one of the tourist offices in Reykjavik, however, consider the fact that the tour. buses are often late, if you are not at all lucky, you can wait for the vehicle for thirty minutes. Second point. It is better to buy tickets to visit the Blue Lagoon in advance on the website. Bathing only is included in the basic ticket price. Want a bathrobe, slippers, masks and drinks at a local bar right in the middle of the pool? Then order a premium ticket.

Another funny moment. After buying a ticket, a confirmation comes to the email, in order to avoid unpleasant situations, it is better to print it and bring it with you in paper form. The entrance to the Blue Lagoon is a trail between solidified pieces of black lava. The edges of the pool are also decorated with the same massive pieces of lava, for this reason, near the sides, you should be careful not to accidentally scratch the lava.

Before diving into the healing waters of the Blue Lagoon, shower and shampooing are mandatory. A small bonus for those who are afraid to go out with damp hair - there are Blue Lagoon gel and shampoo dispensers in the spa cabins, so you will wash your hair with nothing but the most expensive Icelandic shampoo.

Inside, the spa complex fully reflects the Icelanders' idea of \u200b\u200bwhat luxury is, namely a stylish interior, which, unfortunately, is not well thought out in terms of elementary comfort. For example, for some reason there are only two benches in the locker room, as a result, guests of the Blue Lagoon have to change while standing, touching their neighbor's tights with a shoulder. Or there are only three hair dryers in the break room, as a result, at the "rush hours" at the tables there are queues of people who want to dry their hair. The thing is that the Icelanders themselves do not pay attention to such nuances at all, judge for yourself, if all life passes in harsh weather conditions, little things like an uncomfortable bench in the locker room cannot be bothered.

However, as soon as you find yourself in the thermal pool of the Blue Lagoon, any thoughts (especially about the lack of seats in the locker room) evaporate by themselves, and you understand, here it is, that same unearthly pleasure, for which it was worth flying to Iceland in the middle of winter! Dense steam rises from the water, guests ply along the lagoon (in order to swim, the depth is insufficient), trying to find areas where the water is not just warm, but hot. The fact is that the pool is not additionally heated, as a result, all the guests of Blue Lagoon, whether they like it or not, join the game "cold-hot", stepped step - cool, walked a couple of meters - got into a stream of hot water.

In the photo: on the shore of the Blue Lagoon basin

There is a bar in the center of the pool. The assortment of the bar allows you to either additionally heal by drinking vitamin cocktails, or to increase the degree - in addition to healthy drinks, there are alcoholic drinks on sale, by the way, guests of the Blue Lagoon order drinks of the second type with great enthusiasm.

Every now and then a young man appears on the side of the pool, his face and stately figure resembling a Viking from the Scandinavian epic. Only a modern Viking is armed not with a battle ax, but with an iPad, and his job is peaceful - to photograph guests of the Blue Lagoon and immediately send pictures to them by email in real time.

In the photo: a photo taken by a young Viking

In addition to drinks, the local bar sells scrubs and masks made of blue clay (if you ordered a premium ticket, then the scrub and mask are your default). They give out beauty products in plastic cups, these are usually used for draft beer on all kinds of music festivals... By the way, the Icelanders themselves do not buy masks and scrub in the bar on the water, they say, why spend money on something that is free of charge under your feet? Indeed, blue clay accumulates at the sides at the bottom of the pool, Icelanders collect clay from the bottom and apply it to the face. Remember what I said about the attitude of the inhabitants of the country to comfort? Here is a visual confirmation of my words.

In addition to the outdoor pool in the Blue Lagoon, there are saunas that are mandatory for all thermal complexes, a waterfall, as well as a grotto, in which, at nightfall, lights simulating candles are lit, plus you can turn on music in the grotto, or listen to information about Blue Lagoon. Perhaps, artificial grotto - the most romantic part of the thermal complex, one involuntarily arises associations with the very cave where Jon Snow and Ygritte indulged in love in Game of Thrones (by the way, this scene was filmed in Iceland). It is a pity, however, in the grotto of the Blue Lagoon is always full of people, so do not play pranks like the heroes of the series. By the way, one more important point. The water in Blue Lagoon is not only not additionally heated, but also not purified with any kind of chemistry, it is completely renewed on its own within a day, so there is no need to add bleach and other disinfectants.

And finally, about the Lava restaurant, which is open directly to the Blue Lagoon thermal complex. His visit caused mixed feelings. On the one hand, the cuisine run by the chefs Þráinn Freyr Vigfússon (voted the best chef in Iceland in 2013) and Viktor Örn Andrésson is beyond praise. Local smoked salmon and rack of lamb are some of the best I've had on the island.

Pictured: rack of lamb at Lava restaurant

But the service, unfortunately, is peculiar in Icelandic, firstly, the restaurant manager, regardless of whether you have a table reserved or not, you have to wait for 15-20 minutes (you are not allowed to sit down at the table on your own), and secondly, waitresses ply the hall very sporadically. In a word, not that the appetite disappears, but the desire to leave a tip does not arise.

However, in order for the impression of the dubious service of the Lava restaurant to evaporate, after lunch you just need to dive into the waters of the Blue Lagoon again. They are magical, not only rejuvenate skin and hair, but also instantly wash away irritation and discontent.

Iceland is famous for glaciers, geysers, waterfalls and volcanoes. It's harsh and wild land, with incredible landscapes. But there is one place in the southwest of the land of the elves that is truly magical.

The geothermal resort on the Reykjanes peninsula has become business card Iceland and a favorite tourist destination. The Blue Lagoon is visited by 300 thousand people annually. The waters of the lake change their color from sky blue to milky white. Neither snow, nor rain, nor a relatively shallow depth (from one meter to three) do not affect their temperature. Steam rising from the water is visible 5 kilometers away.

The hot spring is always a comfortable 38-40 degrees... Silicon, quartz, white clay, mineral salts and blue-green algae make the composition of the water curative. Any bacteria, including fungi, die in it. The exception is silicon bacteria, which exist only in the Blue Lagoon and strengthen human immunity.

Man-made miracle of nature

Interestingly, the Blue Lagoon did not appear due to Mother Nature, but due to the work of the geothermal power plant, which is still located here. Locals These waters have been used for a long time for heating houses and hot water supply, but relatively recently they became interested in their unusual color.

  • Do not miss:

So, in 1999, at the site of development, among the rocky shores of lava, a spa complex and a medical laboratory grew, in which unique cosmetics for skin care are developed.

Now the area around the hot spring is fully equipped for treatment and recreation. There is a dermatological clinic with a small hotel, a relaxation area, a shop with Blue Lagoon cosmetics, a restaurant and a cafe.

Huge crowds of tourists visit the lake just to gaze at the unprecedented beauty. The entrance ticket costs 10 euros. If you are planning a trip to Iceland and are just going to visit the resort, then it is worth contacting local tour operators. They regularly organize excursion tours, the price of which is approximately 22 euros.

Prices for rest and services

Few will resist the temptation to visit the world famous spa resort and, at least, not plunge into the famous waters. In the summer, a simple bathing will cost 50 euros for an adult, 25 euros for a teenager (14-15 years old), children under 13 years old are free.

Babies under 2 years old are not allowed to bathe in the hot spring, and each child or teenager must have an accompanying person (one adult for two children). In winter, prices for adults are 10 € lower.

Above are the standard minimum prices for day trips. For relaxation in the Blue Lagoon there are also comfort, premium and luxury class tickets. Their cost is from 55 to 195 euros. The "comfort" includes 1 cocktail of your choice, towel and care products.

Slippers with a bathrobe will be added to the "premium" set, a table in the restaurant will be reserved for you and a free drink will be served there, so that it is not so boring to wait for your order. You can take the opportunity to try some of the national dishes of Iceland.

On this luxury tour, visitors receive a wide range of beauty products and access to an exclusive lounge - a living area where they can relax while gazing out over the stunning landscapes of the Blue Lagoon.

You can order separately additional services... Unprepared tourists will be given a bathrobe and slippers - 10 € each, a towel and a swimsuit - 5 €. Massages and other treatments start at € 15, but set yourself up for one standard procedure to cost € 60-190.

There are plenty to choose from. For the face - these are masks, peeling, combined with the application of warm stones and rubbing in oils. For the body - scrub from pure geothermal sea salt, peeling with a mixture of oil and silicon dioxide, massages, seaweed wraps.

There is even a special waterfall massage, massages for children and pregnant women. Current prices for all services are indicated on the official website of the Blue Lagoon - bluelagoon.com. The cost of treatment in the clinic

We should also pay special attention to the Blue Lagoon Dermatology Clinic. Her main focus is psoriasis treatment. For starters, you can visit here for informational purposes. The nurse will tell you about the process and the means of treatment, will give you a try of special cosmetics developed in Iceland for patients with psoriasis.

A single visit to the clinic costs 130 € and is available for no more than three days. A voucher with intensive treatment and full board for one costs 329 euros / day, in summer - 386 euros. Duration - 1-2 weeks, with the possibility of paying for additional days of stay. A doctor's referral is required to start the procedure. In fact, it is translated into english language extract from medical card, where it must be indicated how you were treated before.

In the clinic, the patients are monitored by a dermatologist who describes the treatment process. Nurses monitor adherence to recommendations. A patient with psoriasis will have to take mandatory individual bathing in water from a geothermal spring 2 times a day, ultraviolet radiation therapy, body wraps 5 times a week, aquamassage once a week, procedures using special cosmetics.

A fitness room, mountain biking and Nordic walking poles are available to keep fit. Before leaving, the doctor will give advice on further treatment and give out a set of home care products for 4 weeks.

How to get to the Blue Lagoon

Unfortunately, or fortunately, Iceland is not one of the popular tourist destinationswhere all-inclusive lovers go. For all the uniqueness of the thermal resort, no tour operator sells vouchers to the Blue Lagoon.

Blue lagoon on Iceland map

Travel agencies usually call such destinations "individual tour" and sell them at exorbitant prices to all naive comers. In fact, their function is reduced to booking a hotel and an air ticket for regular flight... So why overpay an unnecessary intermediary if it's easy to do it yourself in a few simple steps.

Flights

Closest to Blue Lagoon international Airport, Keflavik, is only 15 km. If you can find a convenient flight at a good price, this will be the ideal option. However, it is usually more profitable to fly to the Icelandic capital,. From it to the resort a little further, about 40 km. The cheapest tickets are easy to find using a search engine Aviasales:

Transfer

The cheapest option is regular buses that run between the airports and the Blue Lagoon during the day. If you want faster and more comfortable - you can order private transfer via or, it will be cheaper than taking a taxi on the spot.

Hotel

The most comfortable option is to stay in a clinic hotel, which is located directly on the territory of the Blue Lagoon. You can book a room on the above-mentioned official website of the resort. However, due to the great popularity of the hot spring, free places there is not always. In addition, the prices are a little "bite".
