Flight to San Francisco

Flight OZ-214 departed Seoul for San Francisco at 05:04 KST (08:04 UTC) with a flight time of approximately 11 hours. The flight was Boeing 777-28EER on board HL7742, there were 16 crew members and 291 passengers on board. Before landing, the flight was in normal mode.

The plane was flown by two crews: the main crew and the shift crew. At the time of the crash, the plane was flown by the prime crew. Direct control of the landing was carried out by the co-pilot, who was sitting in the PIC's seat, and the commander occupied the co-pilot's seat, performing the functions of the PIC instructor. Landing

According to the NTSB, there were no signs of malfunction of the aircraft. Both engines worked properly before hitting the ground. According to the results of the investigation, the crash occurred as a result of a series of incorrect actions committed by the pilots.

At a distance of about 24 kilometers from the end of runway No. 28L, the airliner was slightly above the glide path. The crew had to adjust the flight configuration in order to reach the desired altitude. However, when the plane approached 10 kilometers from the runway, it was still well above the glide path. The pilots began to change configuration in order to descend quickly. As a result, the settings they applied led to the transition of the engine thrust control levers to the idle mode, and the autothrottle switched to the “ HOLD", In which the airspeed is not controlled by the on-board computer. At the same time, none of those in the cockpit noticed what had happened. As a result, the liner began to lose speed faster than prescribed during landing.

The pilots did not notice the development of a catastrophic situation, in negotiations with the air traffic controller they worked out standard landing procedures and did not report an emergency. Meanwhile, Flight 214 was rapidly losing airspeed and altitude - instead of 253 km / h, it had a speed of 218 km / h and only 190 km / h a few seconds before the crash. The descent rate was almost 2 times higher than the required one: 6 m / s instead of 3.5 m / s.

Catastrophe

The pilots noticed that the descent rate and airspeed were inadequate when the aircraft was 60 meters from the ground, but did not take any go-around action. It was only when Flight 214 dropped below 30 meters that the crew realized the criticality of the situation and tried to rectify the situation, but to no avail. At this time (4 seconds before the disaster), the GPWS alarm went off about the danger of a stall. Usually, after receiving this signal, the pilots increase the thrust of the engines and lower the nose of the aircraft to gain speed, but in this situation the ground was too close.

1.5 seconds before the collision, the crew decided to go around, but there was no opportunity for this (the airliner was no more than 10-15 meters from the ground), and at 11:28 PDT (18:28 UTC) flight OZ -214 crashed into a stone embankment in front of the end runway No. 28L. The tail section and engine # 1 (left) came off the blow from the plane. Thus, 3 people died in the crash. 187 people were hospitalized, including one pilot and several flight attendants. 7 people were in critical condition, including 2 were paralyzed due to spinal injuries.

Investigation

The National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB) has officially investigated the causes of the crash of flight OZ-214.

However, the Pilots' Association criticized the NTSB for publishing “ incomplete information out of context". According to the association, this caused “ violent theorizing [in society] about the causes of the disaster, which can lead to erroneous judgments about the intentions and actions of the crew". An NTSB spokeswoman disagreed with the criticism, saying that publishing factual information is extremely important as it prevents false rumors from spreading.
