Our trip in Europe lasted 25 days. During this time, we drove out of the Czech Republic (Prague) through Austria and Germany to the south of Italy on the east coast, we wound about 1000 km along Sicily, and then returned to the west coast of Italy back to Prague. Total about 6,000 km.

The route and details of the trip will describe in another article, and here only a story about what everyone who will be known to travel in Italy on her or rented car.

Car rental and travel in Italy

 • Rent a car in Italy and other European countries on the website of Rentalcars.com
 • We traveled in Czech numbers. The traffic police stopped once at the entrance to Italy. Checked passports. Documents for the car, rights and insurance were not checked. More traffic police have not seen
 • Permitted speed on the motorway 130 km per hour, but the Italians go faster. Camera, fixing speed. The chamber will soon warn signs on the scoreboard. Also, the navigator rang, warning about speed control.
 • On the day of departure from the Czech Republic, the navigator broke out, so in Italy bought a new TomTom navigator with life update of Europe's lifetown. While we went without it according to applications on the iPhone, repeatedly climbed it was not where it is necessary because of the junction and turns of 180 degrees.
 • If your goal is only Sicily or only rest in the south of Italy, and not a journey as such, then cheaper and more logical will buy a plane ticket, fly to Sicily or south Italy and rent a car in place. On how to find air tickets, including Loucostov flights, spoke in the article :. Ryanair flies in Italy, Alitalia has normal prices for flights within the country.
 • Take full-coated insurance when renting a car. In 8 cases out of 10, you will tear an antenna, the doors scratch or the rear bumper.
 • Along the motorway there is a cafe, but the prices in them are pretty high (extra charge of 300% to prices in supermarkets), so if there is a goal to save, buy food and water on the road in advance in the cities
 • If you plan to catch a plane or somewhere else, let go on the way more time. For example, when we returned to the north, I drove in Calabria. The freeway suddenly ended. There were repair work, which was not warned in advance. There was no bypass road. Just blocked motorway and repair. I had to go through serpents to the coast, because of what was lost 4 hours. Everything happens in Italy.

Filling in Italy

In Italy, there is a concept as a tanker. What does it mean? On the same refueling there are two types of gas station:

Self.

 1. Refuel independently. The price of gasoline corresponds to the indicated on the plate at the entrance to the refueling.
 2. To refue, you need to insert a bill in the automatic payment of payment (it stands near one of the columns). For example, insert 20 euros. The inscription "Credito 20 Euro" will appear.
 3. After that, you need to choose a column from which you will refuel. Next, insert the hose in the benzobac. If 20 euros inserted, gasoline will fall into the tank 20€ .
 4. Filling machines take bills at 10, 20, 50 €. 100 and 500 euros are not taken, the delivery does not give.

Self written on the column. On the left, a little bit is worth the other column on which "SERV" is written - there prices are higher
The number of liters is shown, the price of fuel and the amount
Miracle of Nature - Terminal at the refueling that takes bank cards for payment Standard terminal that accepts only cash euros

SERVADO or SERVITO or SERV

If "SERVADO" or "SERVITO" is written on the column, it means that the refill will fill you. This person can take payment by cash, sometimes take cards, give surrender. The only negative is that gasoline with this option will cost 10-15 cents per liter more expensive than the price initially indicated on the plate at the entrance to the refueling. You do not need to give the tips of the tape refueling - they are already included in the price of gasoline.

If you want to save, drive up to the "Self" column and refuel yourself.

Refueling with the inscription "serv" and higher prices

Paid roads in Italy

All Italy from the north to the south can be driving along a paid freeway. To get from north to south on the east coast, you need to spend 70€ , on the west coast - 60€. Procedure on the freeway:

 • When you enter the freeway, you click on the red button in the machine, you get a ticket. Either the ticket is already in the machine, it only needs to pick up.
 • On the way out insert a ticket and pay the amount specified on the machine. If a man is sitting in the window, give him a ticket, money or a bank card.
 • Do not drive up to the exit, on which TELEPASS is written on a yellow background - this queue is only for those who have Telepass. If there is no telepass, choose the departure on which Biglietto is written, cards or a penny are drawn.
 • It is advisable to have small penny euros with you, since not all machines take bills, but there is not always a person in the window
 • Roads in the south of Italy (south of Naples) are free.
 • Sicily was transferred to ferry. There - 38€ back - 40€
 • Sicily has paid and free roads. The road leading along the north of the island through Palermo is paid and costs 10€

Parking in Italy

 • We shot apartments in Italy and hotels through Booking, putting in advance in the filters of extra amenities "Availability of free parking"
 • In the cities, parking behind the white line is free, behind blue, yellow and red - by tickets. Some parking lots are intended only for residents of a certain area or for people with disabilities.
 • At some parking resorts are free even behind the blue line in the low season, and since June is injected.
 • In the north of Italy, you can often find such a picture when you drive to free parking, and there is a certain face in a free place, waving your hands and trying to help you (and only interferes in fact). The aforementioned person after the "service" rendered for money and pretends to be a parking machine. Request may be 1 before 3€. This face can be understood - a person illegally arrived in Italy from Africa and tries to somehow survive. Give him money, the personal matter of everyone.
 • Price for a paid parking in Italy an average of 1-3 euros per hour or 15-25 euros per day. You need to pay in parking machines.
 • If you plan to stop in cities (for example, in Florence, Siena, Rome), rent in advance accommodation with parking in order to avoid headaches. For example, in the center of Florence, the entry of transport until 19.30 is prohibited. You can, not knowing this, rent housing in the center and not be able to drive up to it by car. Pluses of travel in Italy by car

 • Freedom of movement, independence from public transport schedules
 • You can rent housing on the track, stop in agrotourism or small towns, where rental prices of apartments and hotels below. All apartments rented by us during the journey cost 50-70 euros per day for three-room apartments.
 • The opportunity to move from the track, change the route, call the desert beach found on the map.
 • We saw the whole country. We drove by car along the eastern coast of Italy to the south, ride in Sicily (about 1000 km), returned back to the west coast. We also saw cliffs, volcanoes, and naked fields, cacti, tangerine plantations, vineyards and high mountains. In Italy, there are landscapes that are characteristic of Georgia, Armenia, Mexico, Austria, Croatia, Uzbekistan and even Belarus. All this can be seen on the scale of one country.

Cons travel to Italy by car

 • Expensive. Gasoline, parking, paid roads, ferry on Sicily. If we take into account that in Italy, about 4,700 km, the costs of fuel and paid roads were a weighty cost of costs. Read more
 • Problem with parking. If you plan to travel around the cities, take for rent the smallest car. Parking and riding a narrow streets on a jeep or a universal is almost unrealistic.
 • Our car scratched. If you look at, then in Italy, all the cars are scratched. The streets are narrow, parking spaces are not enough, so a typical car in Italy is often without a bumper with chatting mirrors and huge scratches on the sides.

Is it worth going to Italy by car?

A controversial question, the answer to which everyone is looking for for himself. On the one hand, expensive, tedious, there is a big risk to scratch the car, plus a constant headache with the search for parking. On the other hand, our trip was so rich and full of positive impressions, which unequivocally cost money spent on her.

If you are going to Italy for the sake of resting on the sea, but you want to save, it may make sense to go not in Italy, but in Croatia. Rest in Croatia is an order of magnitude cheaper than in Italy. You can read my article about Tom last year.

Have you traveled by car in Italy or other European countries? Liked? Or public transport taxis? If you have any questions regarding trips to Italy by car, ask them in the comments to this photo-post.

Why go to Apennins

The birthplace of stunning kitchens, perfumery and clothing is interesting even without unique resorts, world-famous museums, monuments of history and architecture, and after all, almost every stone here ─ UNESCO heritage. The auto-trip of Italy will allow you to see many of them.

 • In Venice, it is worth familiar with the Grand Canal, the Cathedral of the Holy Brand and do not forget about the Carnival and Gondolas famous for the whole world.
 • It is impossible to drive by the "falling" bell tower of the Cathedral of Santa Maria Assunta in Pisa or Vatican.
 • The height and length of the nefa of the Cathedral of St. Peter amazed imagination.
 • In the Papal Palace, you can admire the frescoes of the Great Rafael, and in the Sicastic chapel, bow the heads before the genius of Michelangelo.
 • In the Pantheon in Rome it is easy to feel the greatness of the empire, but it is difficult to believe that this magnificence from marble columns and dome with the heavenly all-seeing approach was created by people, and not the gods.
 • Be sure to see the forum, by whose black stone by legend the Romul himself is buried.
 • And, of course, the Colosseum ─ a grand amphitheater, personifying the power of the non-existent empire today.
 • The Milan Cathedral was built 427 years old and is considered the largest gothic temple. Here is the golden statue of Madonna ─ patroness of the city, and over the altar is stored a nail, which Christ nailed.
 • In Florence, you can call only because of the Uffiza Gallery ─ Mecca art connoisseurs.

Villa Adriana in Tivoli, Pompeii, Verona, a memorable in Romeo and Juliet, Rimini resorts ─ List of places for a compulsory visiting can be continued infinitely. You need to have time to visit everywhere, but how even better do it, how if you do not go on your own car?

What will be needed for trips

First of all, the preparation for the auto-job includes receiving documents:

 1. Fabric passport.
 2. Schengen visa.
 3. Documents on the car.
 4. Medical insurance.
 5. "Green Card" (International Insurance by Car).
 6. International driver's license (MWA), if there is no national certificate of a new sample.
 7. Power of attorney for the right to control if the car belongs to another person.
 8. Confirmation of hotel reservation along the path.

In addition, when leaving abroad, representatives of a foreign state have the right to ask to confirm the adequacy of finance. You will need to print an extract from the account or bank card.

Visa to Italy by car is also drawn up in the Italian visa center. The procedure is recommended for three months.

Shengen can be ordered in the diplomatic institution of Poland, if the transit visa is selected, since Poland is the first Schengen Country along the way to Italy.

Medical insurance can be bought by using one of the services, for example, and Green Card will arrange directly on the border with Poland - so even cheaper.

MWA can be obtained in the day in the MREA at the place of residence. Preliminary rental of hotel rooms is required for each night of staying in the Schengen zone.

It is desirable to make a detailed route by the cities of Italy and other countries along the path with the place of accommodation.

Italian customs

The procedure for passing the boundary, the necessary documents, the rules of intersection are identical to all Shengen countries. The queue on the border is always the same on weekdays, holidays and weekends, and the relevant services work around the clock. Signs and pointers make it easy to understand the sequence of the passage of corridors, the choice of which is determined by the contents of your wallets and trunk.

The customs rules of Italy do not differ from those adopted in the EU:

 • import / export of currency is not limited, but the amounts of more than 10 thousand euros must be declared;
 • persons over 17 years old are allowed to import up to 1 l of strong alcoholic beverages, up to 200 cigarettes, 50 cigars or 250 g of tobacco duty free;

There is no ban on baby food and special preparations for individuals with chronic diseases. Products and medications must be packed, and their mass should not exceed 2 kg. Our recommendation is not to go with animals because there will be a lot of papers.

In Italy or Zone Shengen do not miss foreign citizens:

 • declared non counting in one of the states of the zone;
 • recognized dangerous for public order and security;
 • convicted for the revolution of narcotic drugs, sexual violence, the implementation of illegal emigration, the introduction of minors to illegal activity.

After control, the employees of the border service make a mark in the passport with the date and place of the border crossing.

It is important not to forget to update the cards in the navigator. If it is not, it is worth installing an application on a smartphone (for example, Sygic Navigator or MapsMe). In this case, it is also necessary to take care of the mobile Internet.

Choosing a route

The route to the border with the EU is selected based on the location of the starting point. In most cases will have to go through Poland. From the northwestern part of Russia, it is possible to use ferry and start a trip to Europe already from Germany.

Let's leave Moscow

Most often, Russians begin their journey to Italy by car from Moscow or through Moscow. You can reach the border with Europe:

 1. Through the Baltic States, Kaliningrad region and Poland.
 2. Through Belarus and Poland.

The first route is long and is chosen only to kill two hares ─ to see at the same time Baltic States and Kaliningrad.

The second is optimal. From Moscow, you need to go to the M-1 track in the direction of Smolensk, and then move on E-30 to Minsk and Brest. This will take one day.

 1. Through Poland, Czech Republic and Austria ─ four days with three stops. Krakow from Moscow is 1500 km, to Vienna another 500 km, and from there to Venice and Milan only 5 hours drive.
 2. Through Warsaw with stops in Berlin and Munich ─ four days.
 3. Through Slovakia, Hungary and Slovenia with stops in Lublin, Krakow and Budapest ─ a little more than four days.

Travel from St. Petersburg

The trip to Italy by car from St. Petersburg can bring more fun if to go through Finland or Estonia, put the car on the ferry finnlines in Helsinki or Tallinn and about a day to be in Peremuelund (Germany), from which the Italian border is about 1,100 km.

Also from St. Petersburg it is possible to travel from Russia to ferry through Sweden or Denmark. In this case, it is worth considering that Storebaltsbroen and Oresundsbron bridges ─ paid (32 and 43 euro, respectively).

Popular Italian Automobiles

Car routes in Italy must be planned in advance, although complete freedom, which provides its car, allows you to change the direction of movement and stop points at any time. To inspect the country, and the month is not enough.

If you have only 10 days at your disposal, you will have to choose what I would like to see first. Check the guide if you do not know where to start.

Europeans who value the beauty of Italian landscapes, the route along northern Italy to choose from:

 1. Blue - paid. Payment method is indicated on the sign. Parking Disk for Standards With Time Limit (Disco ORARIO) is available to buy in tobacco kiosk (Tabbachi), at refueling, in a bank. Parking with free start time. This is usually written on parking signs. For example, 30 minutes for free. If you get up on this, you must specify the time when you got on the parking lot.

The country can travel from north to south by paid freeway:

 • on the east coast ─ for 70 euros;
 • in Western ─ for 60 euros.

A ferry on Sicily stands in the area of 40 euros. The road in the northern part of the island through Palermo is paid. Travel costs 10 euros.

Now about how to pay roads. This is done by a bank card or cash. At the entrance you need to select the appropriate strip, stop, press the red button in the machine and pick up the ticket.

Payment is carried out on the departure by the band marked by Biglietto. The ticket is inserted into the machine or is transmitted to the cashier, and calculates. Characteristic feature ─ Not all machines take bills.

Fuel cost and types of refueling

The price of gasoline in Italy ─ one of the highest in Europe:

 • gasoline liter costs 1.5-1.65 euros;
 • diesel is estimated at 1.47 per liter;
 • gas cost ─ 0.66 euros.

In cities, prices are lower than on highways, but only there are round-the-clock gas stations.

Our advice: refer to a string in Austria, where the cost of fuel is perhaps the lowest in Europe.

Refueling in Italy are two types of service:

 • automatic ─ reference will be refueling independently (label the inscription Self). At the entrance, it is necessary to insert a bill in the automatic machine (rates 10, 20 and 50 euros are accepted), after which it is possible to get fuel exactly to the amount made. After payment by the card can additionally block a significant amount to it - up to 100 euros. After one to three days it is unlocked, but still unpleasant.
 • with live refueling (SERVADO or SERVITO) ─ calculation is performed by fact at the checkout.

On gas station with self-service liter of fuel costs cheaper by about 10-20 cents.

Route optimization

Optimize the trip so as to get to Italy and in minimal costs in the shortest possible time will help multiple Lifehakov:

 1. Interactive map of the checkpoints of Belarus will allow you to determine where less than the queue here you can see queues. On the way back, the official website of the Polish border service will help to cope with this task.
 2. Studying and fixing among the notes of selected points of the location of power points, parking and hotels on Google maps will help plan the budget. Google account will be required. On the site points you can get acquainted with the prices, menu, user reviews are still at home. Coordinates can immediately score into the navigator.
 3. There and back it is worth building different routes to see not only Italy.

We will have to drive several thousand kilometers for limited time. Well, if there is a second driver. Otherwise, it is not worth planning stopping on vacation over a distance of more than 500 km, otherwise it will have to admire italian beauty from the car window.

Cheaper to eat and spend the night in small towns.

Go on a small car ─ so easier to park and ride a narrow streets.

If you have just a week without a road, go first in Venice, Rome and Milan.

Important phone numbers

If the car broke, you will have to go to the nearest service station or call the emergency service by number 116. For this, there are free telephones on the autobahn. Rooms of other emergency services:

 • ambulance - 118;
 • police - 112, 113;
 • firefighters - 115;
 • information on road movement - 1518.

 • remember the features of the Italian traffic rules;
 • stocking money taking into account local gasoline prices;
 • well, of course, do not forget to download the map of Italy to the navigator.

The cost of a trip by car to Italy: video

In February of this year, it was rolled in Italy for cars, and it helped to look at life in the country from the new angle. How to rent a car, learn to the local driving style, see an incredible nature reserve and spend the night on the street in one of the most criminal regions of the country - the word Anne.

Italy is not the most exotic direction to wait for some incredible adventures from him. Therefore, we decided to add difficulties and impressions themselves and went to the country as independently as possible: without pre-prepared armor, beaten routes and excursions by group. We wanted to drive through the wine-olive Tuscany, descend on the sunny Amalfi-coast in lemones, learn about the Neapolitan Mafia and take the roman outlet-village hitting.

We are Anya, a journalist and SMM manager, and Vanya - an IT developer, and together - two who have long dreamed of traveling by car. It always seemed to us and helpful - to see non-unistricted places, and in an adult, or something. And here is a brief summary of our journey: "Is it easy and cheaply to rent a car in Italy?" - No and no, "How to water in this country?" - Disgusting famously, "Will we still travel by car?" - Yes.

"We were helpful warned that in the campaign - the region of Italy, where the main trip was planned - insurance does not work. Such there, they say, mafia and robbery, that it is better not to surpass "

Rent a Car

Moscow - Pisa - Florence - so the route began to the cherished goal. At Florence Airport, on the way to which we saw the whole city, we were waiting for a cherished car. According to the first calculations, gasoline should be the main fees (about € 1.6 per liter) and the lease itself. In numerous services (Europcar, Herz, Goldcar), prices vary, there are last minute offers and many "conditions with an asterisk". We chose Goldcar, because here a dachshund ONE WAY - for the fact that you will leave the car in another city - was the lowest (€ 65). Rent as a whole also stands adequately - in 6 days we gave about € 40 + € 65.

For potentially spent gasoline on the map € 149 blocked. After returning the car, they are also returned. But in the very point of issue at Florence Airport, we learned that a credit card is needed for armor, not a debit card. After all, only with her rental can recover money if you are brought on some serpentine. And since we did not have banknotes, the rental of Full Cover is a pleasant insurance option from everything, but with biting costs in € 136. True, we were also helpfully warned that in the campaign - the region of Italy, where the main trip was planned - insurance is not valid. Such there, they say, mafia and robbery, which is better not to surpass. Or better without a car. Well, or permanently. "Grazie", "we missed and sat down in the car.

Tuscany and Umbria

We really wanted to see Chianti with his famous wine, foggy hills and olives and cypresses. Castellin-in-Chianti, Bastia-Umbria, Spello, Montefalko, Spoleto - these are towns on elevations with medieval walls and a paving, which we managed to turn around a couple of days. Everyone left for each hour and a half, but the main thing is not to get into the "dead" time from 14:30 to 18:00 - even local cats do not meow these watches, because Siesta. From food you can hope except for a cup of espresso. Shops, restaurants - categorically no.

The sun and in February was very bright, and it seemed that you could run out of the car and shoot the next cities turrets in one sweater. As we did, and Tuscany deceived our St. Petersburg naive souls. Outcome - I'm with a runny nose, and my satellite is preparing a plan-interception of colds: on arrival in the guest house in Bastia-Umbria, shower-boiling water went to move (not every B & B & B-hotel), rubbing, sleep under three blankets and hot tea . Medications on the forums were advised exclusively lemon-honey, about pharmacies - unanimously warned about prices and difficulties of buying something effective.

But the next day, Tuscan Siena rewarded us with free streets and historical painting. And more tea. We again seemed to float against the current and instead of coffee went to drink tea in an interesting place - Tearoom. By the way, this evening we first made a mistake, which stumbled on a couple more times: did not warn the object of posting about late arrival. And they did not buy a local SIM card (we wanted to travel offline), and then attached to all public places in search of Wi-Fi. The result - in one of the guest houses, we just woke up the owner, but in the campaign (this is the most with bad glory) at night remained at night on the street.

Mafia, Mandarins and Pasta God

Now the path lay from Tuscany to the campaign, the village of Gaeta, and this is about 300 kilometers of the road. It is not so interesting to go on this site: the campaign itself seems like a pretty poor region, but the garbage and bumps on the road there are default. We also decided to go around Rome on the ring and slept at once in two stories: the sudden paid track A1 (the main one, on it can always be focused on large cities) and traffic near the city.

In Gaita on the coast, where the whole color was replaced by palm-southern, we approached as much as 23 o'clock. Instead of the address Via Bologna, 22, where our stay was to be, the map showed an empty place near the road. Here we met with special numbering in Italy, when in one house there are several entrances, and they are all considered separate houses. Total: two hours were looking for our hotel without a single identification mark, half an hour wrote there, asking Wi-Fi from a neighboring hotel, and stayed in the car. But every one and a half hours wake up to warm it up (the temperature at night dropped to +4).

In fact, sleep in the car is quite convenient. But € 32 for the "Overnight" with us flies like a handbag with a navel tourist in Naples. In this city, by the way, we did not drive around, but immediately moved on the Amalfi coast. Here it was already possible to run out of the sake of the photo in one sweater, climb on the rocks and draw over the sea. The nature of the Mining and Sea Region presented to us just a children's delight, although we were squeezed on with-witty serpentines.

"In fact, sleep in the car is quite comfortable. But € 32 for the "Overnight" with us flies like a handbag with a dressed tourist in Naples "

With parking lots in the campaign there is still a big trouble than in Umbria and Tuscany, but everything saves the behavior of Italians. Yes, even if you are tupping and break into one-sided movement not in your traffic light, no one will sign and not material - they just smile. Moreover, the car, and pedestrians move as a macaronous god leads them.

On the Amalftinian coast, we slowed down in the unwasizing village of Chiet, and were so glad that they stayed there for two days. We were finally lucky with the hotel (all in ceramics, elegant furniture, 3 minutes to the sea and all this for € 38). We examined everything within a radius of 40 kilometers: in Praiano went on the liqueur shops on the tasting, in Amalfi admired boats and boats, and closer to their chutter in the evening they sat in a great fish restaurant. What should be done in this area? Try the local kitchen to buy ceramic dishes and steal lemon.

When the coast was rolling in all directions, we chose a hidden path called Pogerola - Noce Fica (Valle Delle Ferriere). There the way lies through lemon and tangerine plantations, where everything is already matured, but is actually very sour. The halt and homemade dinner of Mozarella, Tomatoes, Tuna and Chiabatta in Olive Oil, we arranged near the ruins of the 17th century abbey. Then the trail went to a dead end: water is noise ahead and a slightly visible waterfall, but everything is discouraged. "Attenzione!" On the signs at first stopped, but such a long way just had to compete with something impressive. We passed the fence and coomb. From the cliffs, from fern, with a moss strand flowed water with small crystals. Here we made a pair of 360 degrees Panoramas to carry with you at least some part of this beauty!

It can be said that the mafia campaign bowed us to violating the law and penetration into the reserve. But we are sure - it was a call of nature. And by the way, here we for the hundredth time thanked themselves for decided to take a car - without four wheels to see all this would not work.

All traffic jams lead in Rome

We left the capital for dessert, and it was true: even the Italians advise to do so, otherwise the Roman charm will not let all journey. Only here to get to Rome on the roads are not always the most convenient option: for the first time we are really stuck in traffic jams, and even jewelry driving masters had to stand. Very often the road narrows, moves from the motorway to settlements, everywhere there are many speed limitations. Motorcyclists are not embarrassing, but if you slept the outbreak behind your back - you probably captured a speed ride. This is another reason why auto-rent services are asking for a credit card: fines in Italy are large. But do you think about it when you rush in Valmonton to an outlet-village to buy Trussardi jacket for only € 69?

The end point of our trip by car was Fiumicino Airport - the largest in Rome. We decided to come to those mentioned 20.00 - and it was the right decision! The courtcar courtcar gives an hour from above, before chargeing you a fine for delay, but considering how the labyrinth was the main Roman hub, we were just in time. Do not forget about the fuel-to-fuel - the system in which the car is issued and is made fully refilled. Only it is not necessary to pay with the automaton at the refueling of large bills: the office did not work in the evening and no one did not give us the delivery of € 5.

"Fines in Italy are rather big. But do you think about it when you rush in Valmonton to an outlet-village to buy Trussardi jacket for just € 69? "

And now - on foot

Leaving the car, we even were delighted that they were not very thoroughly purchased in outlets, because everything was moving into the hands and back. The remaining three days in Rome itself did not need a car. But to see not one city and just see another Italy, Auto - Mast Hev, as the experts of English say. Even all the nerves with the navigator, addictive to Italian expressive ride and spending a car rental almost € 350 instead of the expected € 170 - everything was compensated by impressions.

Rome - Pisa - Moscow - So the journey under Hesteg # otheratelia ended. But not forever - it is necessary to please the Italians and note in a passport more days "in the territory of the country who issued a visa"!

Photo - Ivan Yakovlev

So I returned from the journey in Italy and now I will tell you how to organize my acquaintance with this country so that everything goes "like oil." My independent journey in Italy lasted 24 days. During this time I managed to visit so many attractions that on the last day I could already work the guide :). From the cities Most I remember Venice, Milan and Rome. They need to be visited in mandatory.

What to do in Italy? Yes, there is a huge space for recreation. Beach, Wines, Walking along the embankments, acquaintance with the local ardent population :), a huge number of attractions, but just enjoy life. I traveled on a bike along a cobbled streets of Florence, I crossed Italy from north to south by train, walked at night with Italian on the sparkling streets of Milan :). Moreover, as always, my knowledge of saving on travels helped cut costs several times. And now to specifics.

Travel route

My route

According to the already established tradition, I started my own travel in Italy from Novosibirsk. The flight was Morning - Novosibirsk - Milan, with a change in Moscow. 10 hours and I am in place (I slept in the plane, so time flew unnoticed :)). The plan that I had under the codename name :) "Traveling through the cities of Italy" was visited by the following cities: Milan -> Venice -> Bologna -> Florence -> Rome -> Naples -> Palermo. From the north to south for 24 days, and in such cities, like Bologna and Naples, I stayed for only 3 days, they just lay on my way, so I decided to visit them.

What I was guided by choosing exactly these places. I wanted to see the features of life in all parts of Italy, visit many attractions that belong to various cultures and epochs (on the site of modern Italy, many centuries existed independent states, such as the Venetian Republic, the Florentine Republic, the Sicilian kingdom and others, each with their own characteristics and history). Therefore, I compiled such a route that would include most of the most significant cities in the history of cities for cultural education, but would also allow me to swim, sunbathe on the beach, slowly enjoy the sea rest. Attractions + sea = perfect vacation in Italy;).

Because inexpensive flights from Russia to Italy imply landing in one of the largest cities, and most often, it is Rome (Capital), Milan, Venice (Northern Italy, one of the cheapest plane tickets for sale here), I decided that I will start a trip to Italy from the northern part of it, namely, from Milan, and I will gradually move to the south. Because My trip began in mid-June, I was not limited to weather conditions: the weather was good, it was very little rain, the sea was already well warmed, in general, the perfect time.

Additional routes

I made up for visitors Website Website Alternative routes in Italy so that everyone can choose the most suitable for him. Someone wants to focus on visiting attractions, someone loves to spend all his vacation on the beach under the rays of the sun, swimming and enjoying every moment of a seafood, and someone (including me) wants to combine beach holidays and visits to attractions. In addition, the number of days left under rest in Italy, everyone has its own.

Up to 5 days

There is no point in a 5-day journey to take a visit to 5-10 cities, you will only get tired of such a holiday and you will not really see anything, it is better to make stay in every city. Is there only 5 days to rest? Then it is better to visit 1, the maximum of 2 cities (for me, so it should be a city with a large number of attractions, and a beach resort's beach city, sometimes these concepts characterize the same city, for example, Naples, Genoa, but most often accounted for change the resting place to search for the best conditions and greater comfort). If you do not want to move somewhere, then it is better to choose a good beach resort, by type of Rimini or Bari, the sea rest gives the necessary majority of people to reload the vitality, so they should not be neglected.

6-10 days

If you have 6-10 days for rest in Italy, and you want to visit several places, choose the city by logic described above: the city attraction + sea resort, the only thing you can increase their quantity, because time becomes more. A good option for this type of rest will be Rome-> Florence-> Genoa (in the vicinity of the latter there are several good beaches, and the attractions are there enough).

11-15 days

With an independent journey to Italy, designed for 11-15 days, you can even more expand the studied region of Italy. Milan-> Venice-> Florence-> Rome-> Salerno (the last city - the sea resort is located near Naples) - this is a good route for those who want to see as much as possible, but it is important to understand that such a holiday will be saturated, but not so much relaxed, because There will be many places in the route, you will have to move frequently, such a route is justified if you are traveling in Italy by car, because In this case, the time costs for the road are reduced, and comfort more, especially, you will always be free to stay in the place you like as much as you want, not even completing your route. I like it more, when the extreme place of rest is the sea resort, because Well swim before returning home favorably affects the general impression of rest.

From 15 days

If you want to familiarize yourself with the Italian culture, see as many places as possible, while not being in a state of the horses, then highlight more than 15 days on an independent trip in Italy. During this time, you can drive this route: Genoa-> Milan -> Venice -> Florence -> Rome -> Naples -> Palermo. This is a kind of alternative to my route, it begins and ends in marine resort cities. So you look at the sights and swim away.

When you plan your trip in Italy, then adhere to the following:

 • Meet the new city carefully. You do not need to visit 10 cities in 2 weeks, such a hurry is very tired. It is better to be in the new city at least 3 days, then you will learn a lot about this place, and you will enjoy the rest, and you will not compete with time.
 • Do not plan a trip in detail. It is better to designate the main items of the trip (for example, cities or beaches), and already "on the spot" orient to go where you want to go and what to visit. With such a form of travel there will be more freedom of action, which will give you more impressions, more positive emotions.
 • Decide how to move in Italy. Different types of transport have different advantages and disadvantages. On the plane, you can quickly move from place to place, on traveling by train you can see amazing landscapes, traveling huge freedom of action on the rented car. If you buy tickets in advance (at least 2 months), you can save up to 70% of their cost.
 • Attend the "non-revocual" places. Tourists show only certain places, and to learn interesting details about the country, then you need to get acquainted with the daily life of the local population. So you will get much more pleasure from travel.

Cheap tickets

A ticket to Moscow from Novosibirsk cost me 4500 rubles, and from Moscow to Milan - 5000 rubles, booked in advance what I advise you, so cheaper. Of course, you can still wait for the sale of bus tickets to airlines, but they, unfortunately, are very rare, and the tickets are limited, disassemble in a few minutes, so you can wait for the sale to miss low prices for tickets just on early booking (it is better to buy Flights for 3-4 months before travel), because the closer the departure date, the higher the price.

Tickets for the route Moscow-> Rome-> Moscow in the summer will cost 10,500-14,000 rubles. Who lives in Moscow, this is much cheaper to fly to Europe.

Hotels

I lived in comfortable hotels, which I got enough cheaply (for example, in Rome, the capital of Italy, I paid for 7 days of staying at the hotel with 3 * almost in the center of the city only 17,000 rubles, and the same hotel could book 2-seater The room for 19,500 rubles, I will clarify what I booked in advance). Naturally, I used my knowledge about. If briefly, I used the site that myself finds the best options regarding the price / quality, so you recommend it. On this site you can find excellent hotels, and in any country. It is convenient that each hotel has been added photos, descriptions, as well as the hotels, leaving reviews tourists who have already visited it, which greatly facilitates the choice of housing in the journey.

Some tourists are looking for hotels only on, and this is not entirely true from the point of view of effective waste of money, because You can often find exactly the same room at the hotel as on Bucking, but much cheaper on another site, the same safe and verified. After all, there are many other sites for booking hotels on which sales are made, and simply sometimes there is a decline in prices, therefore it turns out that there is often the price on Booking. In order not to check all the sites individually, while spending several hours, or even days for the search for a suitable hotel at the lowest price, and the RoomGuru service was invented - it compares the prices of several dozen sites on hotels, including Booking, and invites you to book Hotel room at the lowest price. Service is free, very comfortable and reliable, I recommend using them, save a lot of money and time.

Here is a visual example, hotel 3 *, 2 adults, 7 nights. Note that the lowest price is not on Bucking (315 €), but on Amoma (273 €).

But another example for two in the hotel 4 *.

In addition to the fact that the price itself is low (252 €), specifically in this case, you can still save 122 € (price on Bukin 374 €, the price of Agoda 252 €). As you can see, the price of the same room at the hotel can vary significantly on different sites, so it is very profitable to use the RoomGuru service that everything compares you and suggests the lowest price for the number (just this is displayed in the screenshot).

There is an alternative service, but it is still better to use RoomGuru- it is reliable, more convenient and more efficient. What about the search itself, if you want to save most, then choose housing away from the famous attractions and the city center, of course, you will lose a little in comfort, because It will be necessary to get to the right places in public transport longer, but the savings can be essential, here you can decide that priority is comfort or savings. I try to choose housing or in the center, or close to him, if there are good hotels at low prices (they are always with early booking), transport costs sometimes "eat" most of the saplea money in the depth of the center, so, Ultimately, you are also preferable to those accommodation options with which it is convenient to get to the main attractions.

The most expensive to live in Venice. I would even say no more expensive, but very expensive. Here I had to pay 90 euros per night at the hotel. In Venice I was 5 days, in the amount paid 450 euros, for comparison, I could live for this money to live a month and a half !!! In Thailand. But it must be said that it was not the cheapest hotel, there were options cheaper, I just liked the view from the window of this hotel, so booked it :).
It is important for me that when booking was a 100% guarantee that I will come to a comfortable hotel that corresponds to photos, the building was located in a convenient area of the city, and so that there were no problems when setting up by the type "Wait with a watch, we Forgot to get in the room. "Or" the error came out, in this number 5 minutes ago we settled another person, look for another hotel. " Is it important for you too? Then use.

I selected Italy hotels with the best price / quality ratio (in my opinion), based on your travel experience, tourist reviews, convenience of location, verification (reliability and security), and, of course, attractive prices (hotels are in order to increase comfort, from Hotels with the lowest price to hotels are more expensive). If you want to find a comfortable hotel, accommodation in which you will not force you to drag through the entire city to sights in crowded public transport or for a long time look for a parking place for car parking, with good service (clean bed linen, convenience and trouble-free settling, good Wi-Fi, Allowing to use social. Networks and immediately publish stunning photos from rest, communicate with relatives, look for needed information), with a small cost of living, then choose a hotel from this list and book as early as possible (these hotels are in great demand, numbers Often it is not enough for everyone, and with advance booking you will certainly provide yourself with a stay in one and best hotels, and the price will be even lower).

Rental of property

As a certain alternative to accommodation in hotels, there is an opportunity to rent a housing at the Italians themselves. Of the advantages of such a way of finding a place to stay, it is possible to note except for the reasonable cost for a large company or for a large family (if 6 people go to rest or more), because In a large apartment, a large number of people can fit (but a large apartment at a good price must still be as a rule, as a rule, such options are already booked for 6-8 months to summer months), and in recalculation for one person the cost of staying in Italy is somewhat lower. But this plus, in my opinion, becomes insignificant when making a lot of minuses of housing rental, such as unsafe, the risk of being deceived by the owner of the housing, the lack of even basic tourist services, additional inconvenience when settling and departing.

Because For rent housing abroad, some difficulties are inherent, then you have to use the services of intermediaries who take a decent commission and, in some cases, include additional payments in the price, which makes the rent not very profitable.

One of the most famous rental services - Airbnb. If you decide to rent housing, and do not book rooms in hotels, you can use for a discount for saving money.

It is important to note that rental housing for owners is a fairly risky business. Increasingly, there are cases when housing does not correspond to the photographs presented on the service (especially relevant for cheap options with a small number of reviews). It is also possible that noisy neighbors live in the next apartment, which will deliver a lot of inconvenience (if at the hotel, for the most part, you are protected from poor behavior of the neighboring concierge, guard, then in the rented apartment you will need to call the owner of housing or to the police, What will require additional time and nerves). Several of my acquaintances got into a very unpleasant situation, when the landlords simply canceled a few days before arrival (relatives can come to him, or he will be offered a higher price, or he himself will change plans - anything), and the travelers were urgently accounted for Search for another accommodation, and after all, the time of early booking has already passed, which means that the new housing was much more expensive than the previous version, additional costs appeared, which spoiled the planned rest. Therefore, I recommend not to rent housing, and book rooms in hotels, so safer, reliable and, in the overwhelming majority, cheaper.

Documents

The required documents, as well as in all of Europe, are as follows: passport, visa and insurance. I have long been a passport, and someone has it, I recommend applying for its receipt as soon as possible, make it 1-4 months (through the website of the State Service, you can get a passport about a month if you live at the place of registration). About I wrote a whole article, so I recommend to get acquainted with it, if short, then the best insurance at low prices can be bought on the site.

Italy enters the Schengen zone, so I received. Here is a list of necessary documents for obtaining it:

 1. Flights Round and back (you can reservation, you can already purchased)
 2. Confirmation of accommodation (confirmation from the hotel, as a rule, it will automatically be sent to your mail when booking the hotel)
 3. Medical insurance (coating amount of more than 30,000 euros)
 4. Compiled questionnaire (can be downloaded on the website of the Italian visa center)
 5. Photo (1 piece, without frames, color)
 6. Passport, valid for more than 3 months at return date from a trip
 7. Copy of the main page of the passport (where photos and personal data)
 8. Financial guarantee (extract from the account with a sufficient amount of money (the amount depends on the number of days to travel and the number of days in Italy)
 9. Employment confirmation (certificate from work, or a copy of the certificate of entering into Eagle (for IP), or a certificate from the place of study, or pension certificate)
 10. Receipt of payment of the consular fee (it needs to be paid after the conclusion of the contract, if you submit documents through the visa center))
 11. Russian passport (original and copy of pages with photography and registration)
 12. Consent to the processing of personal data (you can download on the website of the visa center)

Schengen visa to Italy will cost 35 euros (consular fee) + 2,200 rubles service collection of the visa center. If you live in Moscow, you can save on a visa collection, submitting documents directly to the Italian Embassy. It is important to note that if you are refused in a visa, consular and service fees are not returned.

In Italy by car

An independent trip to Italy on a car has its pros and cons. Whether you can choose this type of travel depends on several answers to the questions you need to ask yourself: I really want to be free in the choice of the route, I really want to see the usual life of Italians, I can pay for 20-40% more money ( In comparison with the travel using public transport) for the opportunity to travel in Italy, I am ready to solve parking problems, I do not want to use public transport? If you answered all these questions "Yes" - then really, a trip to the car can turn your vacation into something completely different, very saturated with pleasant events, diverse, unusual.

If short, then the trip to Italy on the car is superintess, but expensive, as well as, in some cases, is problematic.

Comfortable and cheaper will not go from Russia to your car, but fly on an airplane to some large Italian city, pick up a rented car (need to rent in advance, on special, proven sites) and choose the wheel in Italy.

Some moments on the car travel:

 • Cheaper and safer Turn the car on the site. Book cars in advance for several months, so the price will be much lower
 • Be sure to take full insurance for the car. In Italy, narrow streets are very great to scratch or damage the car.
 • At the time of travel, you will need a navigator with current maps (if you travel for cars often, you can buy a navigator yourself, and not pay extra for it every time leases)
 • In some major cities there are special rules of entry into the central part, sometimes you need to buy additional permission to enter, sometimes entry is prohibited in some hours.
 • In roadside cafes and shops prices are significantly higher, for savings you can be caught in advance in urban supermarkets
 • Refuel cheaper in cities, not on the autobahn. Gasoline on paid roads is more expensive.
 • In Italy, there are two types of attachment: SELF (refueling and paying gasoline yourself) and SERV (accepts payment and fills the refill, the price for each liter of gasoline here is higher by 10-20 euro scents).
 • Most of the good roads of North Naples are paid. For travel from north to south by a paid road, 70-90 euros will have to give.
 • In order not to suffer from Parking, book a hotel with your parking lot.
 • Crossing on Sicily will cost 50 euros.
 • 1 liter 95 gasoline costs 1.6-2.1 €.

Popular resorts and cities in Italy

Where exactly go to Italy - depends on your preferences. I have already given some recommendations in the "Routes" section of this article. If briefly, with a highly limited budget, choose a seaside resort, in which there are also attractions, for example, Rimini, Genoa, Naples (with the last - be careful, thefts there very often happen, but the attractions and the sea are, which is a big plus). If you want to see the life of Italians, then make a route from the north to south. Behind the branded shopping should go to Milan, Rome, Florence. If you need only a beach holiday, and the best in Italy, then better choose the islands - Sicily, Ischia, Elba. Well, the sights go to Rome, Venice, Florence. The choice is huge, every city has its own advantages, be determined based on the goals of the rest and budget.

I will give a list of the most popular places where you can relax in Italy. For convenience, I pointed out the main distinguishing features of the rest for each resort (in one or another sights there are in every one, just somewhere else, and they have worldwide fame):

 • Turin - attractions
 • Genoa - Attractions, Sea
 • Milan - Attractions, Shopping
 • Venice - Attractions, Sea (in the vicinity)
 • Bologna - sights
 • Pisa - sights
 • Florence - Attractions, Shopping
 • Rimini - Attractions (Little), Sea
 • Rome - Attractions, Shopping
 • Naples - Attractions, Sea (in the vicinity)
 • Salerno - Sea
 • Bari - Attractions (Little), Sea
 • Palermo (Sicily) - Sea (in the vicinity)
 • Syracuse (Sicily) - Attractions (Little), Sea
 • Albia (Sardinia) - Sea

Money

What money to take on a journey in Italy? Take euros. And do not wear all your savings with cash, put the main part of the money on the card, ruble or in euros - it does not play a special role when paying (payment will pass and in that case), because If you even have a ruble card, then when paying for the purchase in Italy, there will be automatic conversion of rubles in the euro and there will be no problems.

If you are often traveling to Europe (several times a year), in some cases it is advantageous to issue a bank card with a score in euros, to replenish the bill, and pay for purchases in Italy on it, so will not be charged for converting rubles to euros. Only choose to really everything is fine.

sights

What, and the sights in Italy grabs more than. The plan to visit attractions, museums and exhibitions was not. I simply bought guidebooks by cities from my route, and when it was already on the spot, then in 5 minutes I was oriented, where I should go today and what to visit. Without a plan, you can act from your momentary desire that the travels gives the freedom of action, "the flight of imagination" and more positive emotions, you don't need to hurry anywhere, you are not late for anywhere, but just enjoy your holiday.

The only thing I did immediately, as I arrived in the new city, I bought a discount tourist map, which gave me a discount to 50% for sightseeing, public transport, as well as a passage without a queue in some museums. Traveling in Italy Alone, visiting many attractions, actively using public transport - such cards for tourists will help to save.

For Rome, this is a map of Roma Pass, 3 days costs 36 € for 2 days - 28 euros, allows you to visit 2 (for a 3 day card) or 1 attraction (for a card for 2 days) for free and without a queue, free use of public Transport and receive discounts on visiting other attractions. It is best to use it for visiting the Colosseum and the Borghese Gallery, because There are the biggest queues, and with the tourist map they can be mounted, passing through a special entrance.

Using these card data, you can not stand in long queues of museums and exhibitions and pass as a VIP visitor. These cards are inexpensive, you can buy them on the official sites of cities, at airports, train stations, in tourist centers. I wrote on how to save on the journey.

Most of all I remember such places as Duomo (Cathedral) in Milan, the Colosseum in Rome, La Scala (Opera House) in Milan, Palazzo Pitty in Florence, Pompeii not far from Naples. I recommend to get acquainted with the list.

If you want to see attractions in the organized excursion group, learn much more interesting facts about Italy commemorative places from an individual guide, order unusual excursions from local residents, then use the site. Choose a few visiting excursions, read the reviews about them and you can safely book them to diversify your own holiday in Italy.

Transport in Italy

Between the cities of Italy is more convenient and, most often, cheaper to move on trains. The developed railway network and the presence of high-speed trains (except for the southern part of the country) allow you to quickly reach the right city. You can buy tickets on the desired route on the official website of Italian railways TRENITALIA.COM (the earlier buy tickets, the lower the price).

In Italy, several types of trains:

 • "Arrows" (high-speed) - Frecciarossa (the fastest and relatively high ticket price), Frecciargento (medium price and speed), Frecciabianca (the most slow from the "arrows", but also with the lowest price). Choose these trains to distances to save time, for example, Rome Milan, or for better comfort.
 • Conventional intercity - InterCity (ride slower "arrows", but connect more cities, and the prices are lower). There is a lot of time, but you want to save - choose them, but it's more convenient to use "arrows" over long distances.
 • Long-distance night-intercitynotte (as previous, only created conditions for a convenient night trip). A good option for a trip to Sicily, because Riding long, and "arrows" do not go there.
 • Electrics - Regionale. A good, completely inexpensive option for a trip to the suburbs and neighboring cities. There are many stops, so be patient.

Internal air communication in Italy is also developed and inexpensive, but, for me, this type of transport is not always convenient. It is worth flying on the plane if you are going to get to another part of Italy, for example, you can fly to Sicily with Rome or Milan. At least prices and low air travels due to the availability of Loorksosters (Ryanair, Vueling, EasyJet; More Loocosters arrange sales several times a year for which you can buy tickets for 10-15 euros one way without luggage, for baggage usually need to pay 15- 30 EURO, but such sales are rare while waiting for them, you can miss low prices for regular tickets), but time to register for flight, road to / from the airport, frequent delays in domestic flights make airplanes not strongly tempting transport.

You can also use long-distance buses, but it is not very convenient, albeit the cheapest option in most cases. In the hot, summer months in buses stuffy, air conditioners do not always save, and conveniently in buses at a minimum level. Better use trains.

Buy a tour or go to Italy yourself

I decided to travel in Italy myself, without the help of travel agencies, and I will do so further. But some tourists still choose the tour. The fact is that in rare cases on special offers of tour operators, you can relax in the most popular resorts at relatively low prices, such last-minute tours need to be carefully monitored and immediately acquire (if you have such a type of rest and completely satisfying), because The most attractive options in terms of cost are versed literally in 5-10 minutes. Such a specificity of cheap tours makes them difficult, because It is necessary to constantly track the proposals of the tour operators, most often, for several months in a row, and, most often, such proposals are becoming accessible during working hours, which means that it is not always possible even if you have a cheap tour to purchase it, because It takes time to it, you need to interrupt the work (which is not always possible), you need to have access to the Internet and a bank card at hand.

Those who are still solved to choose from offers from tour operators, do it on or on. Services are tested by time, there are convenient filters for searching, many options are available at various resorts. Just do not forget that only accommodation in the hotel is included in the price of most cheap tours (and not always good, only with breakfast or without meals) and the airfare, and spent spending on food / cafes / restaurants, insurance, moving through Italy itself ( Between cities and in the cities themselves), buying souvenirs and other standard spending on vacation, so if the cost of the tour arrive and these costs (to see the real necessary budget), then the proposals from tour operators are often unableless.

The main reason why I do not buy tours, and traveling in Italy on my own, lies in stiffness of choosing an interesting route, restricting yourself with a hard framework for specific dates of arrival and departure (last minute tours with low prices are often not convenient to the dates, the departure can be "tomorrow "Or vice versa, after a few months (which is less common), you have to change your plans, adjust to the tour operator, and most give leave only with a preliminary warning in a few weeks or the annual leave is appointed only for specific dates defined by the authorities, which creates difficulties for There is a small number of days for rest (in a few days you will not be able to fully get acquainted with different parts of Italy, you will have to limit ourselves to one or two cities, which will not provide such many positive emotions in comparison with a flexible independent travel), not very comfortable hotels (most often in cheap tours included accommodation in low farms Wooden, with poor nutrition or without him, in the area removed from the city center).

If you want to see a few cities, visit the best beaches, see the real Italy (and not just that part that closes along and across tourists), enjoy the rest at a convenient thing for you, to experience as many positive emotions and get a large number of pleasant Impressions (much more than a standard tour of the tour gives), then choose the independent trip to Italy.

How much will it take to fly to Italy yourself - you decide only yourself, it is a huge plus of independent travel. Different travelers have a different travel style. Someone loves to spend the money right and left, lives in 5 star hotels and rents Cadillac to move around the city. The price of such a holiday will be several tens of thousands of euros. And someone uses advice, and. Such a journey can cost about 30,000 rubles per month of rest. My independent trip to Italy, which lasted 24 days and included many cities in different parts of the country, it cost 125,000 rubles (if I lived in the European part of the Russian Federation, then this figure decreased by 10,000), I will immediately say that it was not super economical Travel, I just sometimes bought what I wanted, before I traveled in Europe for 25,000 rubles a month (an interesting adventure was interesting :)). First you need to decide how you want to travel and then calculate the approximate budget. An independent trip to Italy for 10 days for two requires an average of 95,000-125,000 rubles, but consider the information specified in this section.
