    Azores, Portugal

The most beautiful double lake Lagoa dash Sete Sidadesh. San Miguel Island

Azores (port. Açores [ɐˈsoɾɨʃ]) is an archipelago in the Atlantic Ocean, occupied by the autonomous region of the same name in Portugal. The name of the islands most likely comes from the outdated Portuguese word “azures” (consonant with the Russian “azure”), which literally means “blue”. The archipelago consists of islands of volcanic origin. The active volcano Pico (2351 m) is the largest peak in Portugal.

In 1995, the Azores received an EU prize for the preservation of pristine nature and the development of ecological tourism.

    Green volcanic mountains

The Azores is an archipelago of 9 islands in the Atlantic Ocean, surrounded by greenery and flowers. The Portuguese discovered this archipelago in the 15th century and the islands have always been the territory of Portugal, despite the ill-wishers who tried to seize them.
The Azores are perfection itself: intricate curves of transparent lakes, immersed in tropical flowers, breathtaking views of the islands and the sea from the mountains.
The craters of the volcanoes overgrown with tropical forests have preserved their primeval nature. The Azores has the purest atmosphere! Scuba diving is popular on the islands, where hundreds of species of fish, molluscs, cetaceans and dolphins live. Azores is chosen for seclusion from civilization, for a luxurious vacation in beautiful nature

The Azores are conventionally divided into three parts: Santa Maria and San Miguel - the east of the archipelago; Graciosa and Terceira, Pico, Sant Jorge, Faial - central part archipelago; Flores and Corvo - western part.
On the islands of the Azores archipelago, there are common features in nature, vegetation, and fauna. They differ in landscape, cuisine and local culture.

The second name of the island of São Miguel is "Green Island" because of the picturesque and green landscapes. San Miguel is home to Ponta Delgada, the main town of the island, with narrow, cobbled streets, well-preserved historic buildings from the 17th century and beautiful parks (Terra Nostra Garden).

And Flores is a biosphere reserve, a specially protected natural area that demonstrates the balanced interaction of nature and man. Flores has magnificent rocky cliffs, many lakes and craters, small pastures separated by hedges of hydrangeas and stunning waterfalls that fall into the ocean from the heights of the slopes.

    Walking road on the coast

The climate on the islands is subtropical marine. Average temperature in winter 18-19 ° C, in summer 24-25 ° C
Floriche receives more rainfall than San Miguel. From June to September, dry and slightly cloudy weather prevails. The water temperature throughout the year ranges from +17 to +23 ° C.

    Azores. The secret of harmony.

The Azores is a set of the most beautiful volcanic islands now in the possession of Portugal. Located in the Atlantic Ocean, beyond the Strait of Gibraltar, the so-called Pillars of Hercules.
It is believed that the Azores are the remnants of the legendary Atlantis, about which ancient Plato wrote, admiring the structure of their society. The ancient philosopher was amazed by the Atlantean engineering and construction ideas, embodied in the most magnificent buildings.

Some historians are inclined to assume that the message of the Old and New Worlds in antiquity was much more lively than in the Middle Ages, precisely because of the intermediate trading base, which was Atlantis. A thriving trade center where adventure seekers from all over the Native American-Egyptian-Greek world flocked.
The Azores were already known to the Carthaginians, which is confirmed by the finds of Punic coins in Corvo. Vikings and Arabs knew about them. The last and final discovery was made by two Portuguese nobles who landed on a wooded island, which is not wise and named Legname, which means forest in Portuguese. The islands were uninhabited at the time of the Portuguese colonization.
Upon learning of their discovery, Italian sailors sailed there and discovered another island and named Madera, which also means forest, only in Italian.
Severe medieval men did not know what ecology was and without further ado, they burned almost all the endemic vegetation and planted vineyards. However, Madera wine is known to everyone to this day.

The islands are volcanic and there are still places where the underground heat allows you to bake bird eggs, it is enough to bury them for a few minutes. And until now scuba divers have not explored the bottom of the archipelago, possibly hiding the secrets of the ancient island kingdom that went under the water.

    Angra do Heroísmo. Terceira. Azores.

National park with hydrogen sulfide springs.

The island of Horvo (Portugal) is the smallest of the 9 inhabited islands of the Azores archipelago, volcanic in origin, together with the island of Flor belongs to the Western group of the Azores. Located in the North Atlantic Ocean.

Impressive sulfur cave in the Azores

This unusual visitor center was designed by the architect Nuno Ribeiro Lopez, who actually recreated a similar old building that exists on the island of Graciosa in Portugal. Now, in a modern-looking building, travelers can get all the information about the sulfur cave of this area. Rising above the water and surrounded by natural craters, this glass structure is truly impressive. The Visitor Center has a total of two levels.
The lower one looks completely buried in the ground: it houses the bathrooms and exhibition spaces. While the second floor offers an excellent viewing platform. What attracts in the construction is that the structure looks quite modern, but not too flashy. Plus, it should be said that functionality was of paramount importance in the renovation of this center.

The best time for whale watching in the Azores is spring (March to early May) and autumn (second half of September).

    Beach vacation

The archipelago was created as a result of volcanic activity, so most local beaches hardened lava. Nevertheless, on the islands of Santa Maria, Faial and San Miguel there are beach areas with black and even light sand.

    Porto pim

Most of the beaches are concentrated on Faial Island, and almost all of them are covered with black sand. An exception is the picturesque Porto Pim, where the sand is light. To see all the most-the-most in the Azores, one trip will not be enough. In any case, you have to make a choice of what you must visit. So, TOP-10 of the most interesting sights of the archipelago, most of which are concentrated on the island of San Miguel.

    Extinct volcano Sete Cidades

On San Miguel, traces of volcanic activity are very clearly visible. For example, just 10 km from Ponta Delgada there is a unique local attraction: a huge crater of the inactive volcano Sete Cidades with the lake of the same name located in it. Lake Seti-Sidadish outwardly looks like two separate reservoirs with water of different shades (blue and green), and is popularly called the Blue and Green lakes.

The most stunning view of the crater and twin lake Sete Cidades, recognized as one of the most unusual sights in Portugal, opens from the Miradouro da Boca do Inferno observation deck. From it you can also see the cave, through which the entrance to the Boca do Inferno bay opens with waves beating against it. From the site, from different angles, you can take a lot of stunning photos of the unique sight of the Azores. The entrance to the site is free, there are no restrictions.

    Miradouro da Boca do Inferno

Behind the site there is a building of an abandoned hotel, many climb to its roof and inspect the territory from there. There are several restaurants nearby, small parking and a public toilet.

The second most beautiful attraction in the archipelago after Sete Cidades is recognized Fiery lake. It is located en route from Ponta Delgada to Seti Sidadish.

Lagoa do Fogo can be observed even from the road along which there are several small viewing platforms... Leaving the car by the road, you can go down to the water itself - trekking is simple and will take about 25 minutes.

The huge and amazingly beautiful park area Terra Nostra is another attraction of the Azores on the island of São Miguel.

The botanical garden, one of the largest in Portugal, has many unique plants. But perhaps the most amazing of them are giant tree ferns that look like small palms. The garden is inhabited by white and black swans, ducks - both common mallards and ogary, mandarin ducklings. There are many winding paths on the territory that lead to ancient bridges, mysterious grottoes, beautiful sculptures.

Therma is considered a local attraction, the water in which contains a large amount of iron and is warmed up to + 40 ° C. Scientists have proven that this brownish-sandy water has a rejuvenating effect. There are changing rooms and showers next to the outdoor pool, and towels can be rented at an additional cost.

The thermal pool is located very close to the entrance to the Terra Nostra park area.

The baths with a very pleasant name (“Poca Da Dona Beija” in Russian means “Kisses of the Little Lady”) is a great place to relax after exploring the local attractions. The water here, although it contains a large amount of iron, is much clearer than in Terra Nostra.

Exact coordinates: Lomba das Barracas, Furnas, Povoasan, San Miguel 9675-044, Portugal.

The work schedule is very convenient: daily from 7:00 to 23:00. There is a small free parking nearby.

The route to the beautiful, tall and rather strong Salto do Prego begins in the village of Sanguinho. The hiking trail runs along low hills, through a forest and several villages, along the way there are small waterfalls. The route, pleasant and uncomplicated, is suitable for people of all ages, but comfortable shoes are a must.

    Mount do Pico

Nature lovers should definitely visit the island of Pico, the main attraction of which is the active volcano of the same name. Montanha do Pico (2351 m) is not only a landmark of the archipelago, but also the highest point in Portugal.

Climbing Mount Pico on a tour of the Azores is one of the most exciting adventures.

Sturdy sports shoes are required for the ascent, otherwise they will not be allowed on the official trail. Since the mountain is windy and often foggy, warm clothes and a windproof jacket will come in handy. You need to take gloves and walking sticks with you to help yourself when moving. You also need to grab food and a few liters of water.

You can get to the starting point, from where the ascent begins, by taxi. A trip from the nearest cities will cost 40 € for a minivan for 6-7 passengers.

It's better to arrive early, if possible, then even before sunrise. Noon is the deadline. For people with poor physical fitness, the ascent to the top of the volcano and descent from it will take 7-8 hours, so it is better to devote the whole day to acquaintance with this landmark of Portugal.

Upon arrival, you must register at the Tourist Assistance Center, undergo safety instructions, get a GPS navigator and a phone "in one package", pay for the ascent. The payment for the ascent to the crater is 10 €, with the ascent to the very top - 12 €.

There are posts numbered from 1 to 45 along the entire trail, which should help you to navigate along the way. The distance between columns # 1 and # 2 is rather long, then the columns are found more and more often. The most difficult part of the path, where the mountain is the steepest, is between marks 7 and 25. After post # 34, the slope of the mountain is flatter, but at the same time, many pebbles and tuff appear on the path, on which you can stumble and slide down. At pillar 45, a view of the old crater and the top of the volcano opens. Further ascent to the top, to a height of 2351 m, continues without marks and pronounced paths. The view from the top is breathtaking: you can see the entire island of Pico, the ocean, and nearby islands. The main thing is to be lucky with the weather, as the top is often covered by clouds.

Descent from the top to the crater can take place on the other side of the mountain. On the way, there are fountains of steam, gushing directly from under the stones. Some stones are so warm that you can warm your hands. By the way, the descent is as difficult as the ascent.

To climb the highest point of the Azores, Pico volcano, it is advisable to take a guide, although the cost of travel in this case will be higher. Sometimes, even if there are marks, you may not notice the required turn, but the guide has detailed map terrain. Special relevant services the guide will be provided if the ascent is made at night or if the ascent is not in a group, but on an independent basis. It is also convenient that the guide can successfully replace the photographer by capturing a famous landmark of Portugal in the background.

Where the lighthouse stands, before the eruption of Capelinhos was the edge of the island. As a result of the action of the volcano, a new peninsula was formed, which increased the area of \u200b\u200bFaial by 2.5 km². "New land" - as it is called locals.

Monument to the Discoverer of Madeira

Madeira was discovered in 1419 by João Gonçalves Zarco, who explored the west coast of Africa and was caught in a storm. The island was named Madeira, which means "tree". This is due to the fact that it was covered with solid, impenetrable virgin forests. To make the island habitable, it was set on fire. The fires continued for seven whole years.

Today Funchal is a modern city with 104,000 inhabitants. It is the safest and cleanest city in Europe to be proud of.

    Winery on the island

The archipelago is believed to have been discovered in 1418. by the Portuguese navigator João Gonçalves Zarco, abandoned by the strongest storm to the shores of the island of Porto Santo. However, only two years later, the Portuguese returned to the archipelago and landed in Madeira, where they found impenetrable forests and fresh water. Gradually, the island was settled, and the inhabitants of Madeira began to cultivate the soil for the cultivation of sugar cane, which became the main income of local residents for many years.

Now sugar is not produced in Madeira, but once it was the production of sugar that made possible the appearance of the famous Madeira wine, which made the island famous throughout the world. The Grape Harvest Festival is held annually in September - an interesting and beautiful sight. The production of wine, bananas and exotic flowers is now the backbone of Madeira's economy.

Madeira is a strong wine produced on the island of Madeira. Wines of this type can be either dry or dessert. The unifying feature is the aging of the wine material during the preparation of wine at a sufficiently high temperature (60-80 ° C) for a considerable time. As a result, a sugaramine reaction occurs in wine (melanoidin formation, Maillard reaction), which determines the amber color of the wine and caramel-nutty nuances in taste and aroma.

According to legend, in the holds and on the deck of one of the Portuguese ships during the voyage to India, there were barrels of wine. Because of the calm, the ship was stuck in equatorial latitudes for a long time, and unsold wine had to be taken back to Europe, so it was exposed to high air temperatures and rolling for a long time. At the end of the journey, it significantly changed its initial taste and aroma, acquiring hints of roasted nut and caramel in the bouquet, thanks to which it became popular all over the world.

On the high altar of the church is a wooden statue of the Virgin Mary, found in the 15th century in the nearby town of Terreiro da Luta. People believe that the statue works miracles, so every year, on the Day of the Assumption (August 15), repentant sinners come to church to pray to the Virgin Mary and ask for absolution. In order for prayer to be heard and sins forgiven, you need to climb a long staircase of 74 steps on your knees.

In the chapel to the left of the central entrance is the tomb of Charles I. In 2004, Pope John Paul II canonized him. A path to the west of the church leads to the flower garden of the former home of Charles I.

In parallel with sautéing vegetables, it is necessary to start defrosting seafood - mussels, scallops, shrimps ... Mussels are added to the stewed vegetables first, then a cube of fish broth and three glasses of heated water. Of course, you can replace the bouillon cube with water with real fish broth - but you will have to cook it separately.

After the water boils, pour 1 cup of rice into the container and bring to a boil. After that, reduce the heat to a minimum, close the almost finished arroz de marisco and simmer for another five to ten minutes. The main criterion is to watch until the mussels open. And it all starts with putting onion chopped into rings on the bottom of the cataplana, then garlic, tomatoes, peppers, and then -
ham cut into "strips" with a total weight of no more than 100 grams.
