Long Beach has absorbed the mix different areas... Huge industrial plants are combined with tranquil and prestigious locations, so you can hear both wonderful and opposite things about the city.

The value of cargo valuables transported through the port city is about one hundred million US dollars. The city district also has enterprises for the production of spare parts and aircraft construction.

The main problem in Long Beach is polluted air. The negative environmental factor is explained by westerly winds, which carry air masses from one area of \u200b\u200bthe city to another. Additional sources of pollution are exhaust from railroad and road transport. Another negative factor is the poor water in the region, but this is due to the presence of a port. The local population practically does not swim in the beach areas in Long Beach. For swimming, they use the Alamitos Bay.

Fascinating places of the city

If we compare the nearby districts of the "city of angels", then Long Beach definitely loses in tourism. But interesting placesthat are worth visiting for travelers, there are.

  • "Queen Mary". A very famous cruise ship that docked at the port of Long Beach in the 67th year of the twentieth century. Currently, the ship is used as a history museum. The ship includes a hotel and large restaurants. In addition to the Queen Mary, you can visit a Soviet-era submarine.
  • Oceanarium. The largest aquatic universe in the States, which houses many exhibits and inhabitants.

  • Long Beach Sea Festival.
  • Belmont car show.

Long Beach is a large port city located in the state of California south of Los Angeles. Long Beach is part of Los Angeles County and is actually one of the boroughs of "Greater Los Angeles". Locality was originally named Willmore City, but due to its long, wide beaches in 1888 it was renamed Long beach.

According to statistics for 2013, over 469 thousand people live in the city. Moreover, the population density is higher than in the surrounding areas of Los Angeles. Downtown Long Beach is located 40 km south of downtown Los Angeles.

Long Beach is a mixture of a wide variety of neighborhoods. Large industrial zones are combined with middle-class, prestigious and marginal areas. Unsurprisingly, you can hear diametrically opposite things about Long Beach: both wonderful and terrible.

Long Beach is the second largest container port in the United States. It has a profound impact on the local economy, employing 30,000 people in the region. The value of cargo transported annually through the port is estimated at $ 100 million. In addition, Boeing's enterprises are located in the city, the production of auto parts and other industries have been established.

Parts of Long Beach suffer from severe air pollution. It is believed to be one of the worst in Southern California. The prevailing westerly and southwesterly winds blow air from the industrial port areas directly into the city. The main source of pollution is exhaust from ships, railways and trucks. In addition, the wind brings air flows from nearby refineries. In addition to the air, the quality of water in many places is poor, which is natural for a larger port city. Dirty water and the absence of waves (due to the presence of a breakwater) explain the typical absence of more people on wide sandy the beaches of Long Beach... For swimming, Alamitos Bay is usually chosen.

Long Beach Port

The racial makeup of Long Beach population in 2013:

  • hispanic (any race) 42.1%
  • white - 28.7%
  • african American - 12.9%
  • asians - 12.4%
  • mixed race - 2.6%
  • pacific origin - 0.8%
  • indians - 0.2%

Since the 50s of the 20th century, the racial composition of the population has changed significantly. Until then, most of them were white. Because of this, Long Beach was ironically called "Iowa by the sea" or "Iowa under the palm trees." But even now, by racial makeup, Long Beach is a bit more like a Midwest or East Coast city than a typical coastal California city.

Socio-economic indicators for 2013:

  • median income per person - $ 25,993
  • population living below the poverty line - 20.5%
  • unemployment in the region (as of June 2014) - 9.0% (above average)
  • cost of living index - 134.3 (high, 34% higher than the US average)
  • 42% of the population live in their own homes, 56% rent.

In general, Long Beach is considered a little less expensive placethan other coastal cities in Southern California.

Interesting places and sights

Compared to other areas of Los Angeles (such as Hollywood, Santa Monica, West Los Angeles), Long Beach loses out in terms of tourist attraction, but it also has interesting attractions.

  • Queen Mary is a famous ocean liner, moored since 1967 in the port of Long Beach. Today this historic ship is used as a surface museum with a hotel and several restaurants. In addition to the Queen Mary, you can get on a Soviet submarine;
  • Aquarium of the Pacific - one of the largest oceanariums in the United States with 3 dozen exhibitions and 1000 species of inhabitants;
  • Naples Island is an interesting area in the southeastern part of Long Beach with canals and expensive houses.
  • Belmont Shores - Popular coastal area.

On April 11, 1990, the city of Long Beach, USA became Sochi's sister city. The agreement was signed in the sister city, which is located 30 km from downtown Los Angeles.

The certificate of economic cooperation between the twin cities of Sochi and Long Beach (Southern California), is kept in the Museum of the history of the resort city of Sochi.

In addition, the company is located in the city Boeing, production of auto parts, other industries, including aerospace and high technologies, has been established.

The presence of industry and a major port has a negative impact on the Long Beach resort, some areas of which suffer from severe air pollution. The prevailing westerly and southwesterly winds blow air from the industrial port areas directly into the city. The main source of pollution is exhaust from ships, railways and trucks. In addition, the wind brings air flows from nearby refineries. In addition to the air, the quality of water in many places leaves much to be desired, which, however, is natural for a large port city. In terms of tourist attraction, Long Beach loses to other cities in the Los Angeles County, but the Pacific sister city of Sochi has a lot to see and learn.

based on materials: wikipedia.org

At first glance, Long Beach seems like a suburb of the huge Los Angeles, but if you read the numbers, it turns out that the city has the 34th largest population in the United States, is one of the largest ports in the world, and is also known for the oil industry, manufacturing plants aircraft, auto parts and electronics. At the same time, for the average tourist, Long Beach is still the ocean and the sun. The temperature here rarely drops below 20 degrees Celsius.

However, the average tourist was overjoyed early. Indeed, Long Beach was once a resort (with a small share of agricultural production). There were many amusement parks in the city, but with the discovery of oil, industry became a priority, and the pollution of water and air did not allow the city to continue to enjoy the status of a resort. Oil rigs and port buildings are now visible from the shore in the ocean, and the public ridiculed those crazy people trying to swim. Why, if many have their own pools?

So a tourist in Long Beach will not have to entertain himself with the ocean, and this post is just about alternatives. First of all, the map of attractions can be downloaded, but here is another map (click to enlarge):

A free red bus runs through the main attractions, if you google Long Beach Transit, you can find a map of its movement.

The main attractions are, of course, concentrated by the ocean. This is primarily Shoreline Village, offering everything from shopping, restaurants, cruises (from $ 15 - sightseeing tour, from $ 30 - dolphins and whales in the open ocean) to an ocean funeral.

Nearby, at the eternal mooring, there is a retired liner Queen Mary, which also offers excursions, restaurants, and accommodation. For three years in the 1930s, the liner was the largest in the world, with such stars as Bob Hope, Clark Gable and Winston Churchill floating on it. However, with the outbreak of World War II, the luxury liner was converted into a warship, even repainted in camouflage colors. After the end of the war, the ship was again converted into a tourist liner within 10 months. Last cruise the liner made in 1967.

Another vessel nearby is the Iowa Warship, on which any tourist can view an exhibition about the Second World War, the Korean War, the Cold War, as well as learn more about the life of a sailor on a military ship.
Shoreline village also houses an aquarium. We recommend visiting it, but it is better on weekdays, as on weekends there are a lot of people with children. The aquarium compares favorably with the others in the presence of an exposition outside, the scale of the exhibition and interactivity. Many sea creatures can be touched or watched as they are fed.

And this is not grass, but a sea dragon.

Not far from the aquarium and Shoreline village is the Naples area - one of the most expensive not only in Long Beach, but throughout California. The area can be explored on a gondola tour or simply for a walk. In fact, the houses are practically built on top of each other, no privacy, so property prices seem overpriced.

Traveling from the ocean inland, there is a lot more to explore beyond the graffiti from the standard arts district.

Firstly, there is a Museum of Latin American Art - small, but just great, and even free on Sundays.

An exhibition dedicated to the Day of All Saints in the Latin American region was held here. To honor the memory of their ancestors, their relatives build peculiar altars from photographs, favorite items of grandparents and offerings.

Secondly, there is a Cambodian region here. True, it does not stand out at all against the background of other American streets, and you better find on the Internet in advance what you want here: they say that many good shops and restaurants are hidden in it.

Thirdly, everyone advises to visit Earl Burns Miller Japanese Garden, but not far from the city (though you can only get there by car) there is a much larger botanical garden. The Huntington Library, Art Collections and Botanical Gardens includes over 20 different gardens, including Australian, Japanese, Chinese, Camellia, Rose, Desert, Lily, Jungle ... Recommended to get there around lunchtime: the garden closes at 5 hour, and there is a lot to see.

Besides bonsai, there is a dry Japanese garden and a model of a Japanese house.

There are many places to eat in Long Beach, the cuisine is very diverse. Among others, we recommend the Peruvian restaurant Aji Peruvian Fusion (2310 E. 4th St., try ceviche), Pier 76 Fish Grill (95 N. Pine Ave.), ABC Seafood Restaurant with dim sum:

And you also need to travel around the neighborhood: here is Disneyland, Los Angeles itself, and Santa Barbara. We will tell you about the last two.

Few of the Los Angeles neighborhoods (LA, Los Angeles) that we visited this January. Winter is exactly what you want in the hot Australian summer.

Long Beach

Embankment

Another opportunity to visit Anaheim and correspondingly . The theme of the first Disneyland (Disneyland) was fully disclosed on the first trip, so we will not repeat it here. Centered and its iconic places we walked the same way last time -.

This time, tickets for the flight were bought almost at the last moment, so they tried to somehow reduce the cost of them, choosing days with a lower price. As a result, it turned out a little more than a day of free time, which they decided to spend in the area Long Beach... A simple tourist visit to the area, without getting up early for dawn and waiting for sunset. Although, the sunset was still.

- Bicycle rental downtown, Long Beach - Recommended to ride along the beach - bike path runs from Alamitos Avenue to the end of Belmont Shore. The location is also convenient for walking or jogging.

- Park area near the embankment

- View of the center of Long Beach from Rainbow Harbor,

We were interested in the embankment or the area - Waterfront, where almost all the sights, cafes, restaurants are located and, most importantly, beautiful views for us.

Judging by the latest articles in Lonely planetThe City of Angels is gaining traction as a cultural destination and is becoming more accessible (but apparently not from Australia judging by airfare) than ever. In 2016, the metro network was expanded there, so mastering Los Angeles (LA, Los Angeles) can be on public transport... City Initiative "Los Angeles without cars" helps tourists to move without wheels, although on the first visit I was confused by the state of the metro and the contingent who use it.

As brochures and guides say about Long Beach“It's not just a beach town - it's a commercial capital where film producers and financiers mingled like cabbage in a salad.”

And so, the word "beach" sounded, so we decided to stop near the very famous beach, take a walk, relax, even though it's winter time. The area, or rather once a town, was originally named Willmore city, but because of its long, wide beaches in 1888 it was renamed to Long beach... Although the area is called "Long Beach", but the best beaches in California they are not here, but the most pleasant place here is the embankment.

- The International Tower and Villa Riviera (with a turret)

The tallest building in the city, the 32-story The International Tower, built in 1966 as a hotel and rebuilt later in 1987 into an essentially apartment building. Villa Riviera (with a turret) is a luxury residential building, built in 1929 for $ 2.75 million (in 1929 prices, a colossal amount of money at that time!), 136 meters high. For a long time, Villa Riviera remained one of the tallest buildings on the west coast of the United States.

Long Beach Is a fairly large suburb, which is a mixture of a wide variety of areas. Its center is located about less than 40 km south of the center Los Angeles (LA, Los Angeles)... Large industrial zones are combined here with areas where the middle class lives, prestigious, as well as frankly marginal. Opinions about the area are diametrically opposed - wonderful and terrible. They say Long Beach much more like cities east coast or the Midwest than any other city in California.

Long Beach famous for his street art. Its most famous object is the "Ocean Planet" mural, which covers the entire surface of the facade. entertainment center... The painting is included in the Guinness Book of Records as the largest street painting in the world. The image is 11,000 square meters. m was created in 1992 by famed eco-street artist Richard Wyland (better known simply as Wyland) as part of the Whale Walls series, in which the author depicts life-size whales, dolphins and other inhabitants of the sea.

- Rainbow Lagoon Park.

- Shopping and entertainment complex "Shoreline Village" - Here, judging by the booklets, there is everything for entertainment with children. Shops, thematic exhibitions, attractions.

Once the "founding fathers" made a bet at the end of the 19th century on the magnificent coast of the area and the wonderful climate. Then Long beach gained insane popularity. Hotels were built, restaurants, bars, places of rest and so on were opened. All this former luxury can still be seen.

The city's population also grew rapidly. And when, in the twenties, oil fields were discovered in the vicinity, there was no end to the optimism of the townspeople. But the “Great Depression” came, seriously undermining the city's economy. Finally, the strongest earthquake of 1933 finally destroyed the streets and entire quarters of the city, and with them the hopes of the townspeople. And the fairytale city, the dream city, began to empty before our eyes.

- Bubba Gump Shrimp Co - 87 Aquarium Way - Long Beach, CA 90802 - We visited this place as a tribute to Forrest Gump

A little bit about …

Bubba Gump Shrimp Co. Is a chain of American restaurants entirely dedicated to the famous film by Robert Zemeckis "Forrest Gump". Everyone who has seen this film will surely remember the character named Bubba, a friend of the protagonist who is irrevocably obsessed with shrimp. “Bubba was from Bayou la Batre, and his mother used to cook shrimp. And his mother's mother cooked shrimp. And his mother's mother also cooked shrimp. All his life, Bubba dreamed of opening a restaurant and calling it Bubba Gump Shrimp Co. “I know everything there is to know about shrimp,” he said. However, Babba failed to bring his idea to life, so fans of the film did it for him, creating a chain of shrimp restaurants in the United States with his invented name.

The interiors of the Bubba Gump Shrimp Co. filled with many items associated with both the film itself and America of the 70s-90s. There is a TV hanging from the ceiling, on which fragments from Forrest Gump are constantly spinning. The menu includes a huge number of shrimp dishes, many local dishes, as well as various cocktails. Average bill: 10-30 $

Each restaurant has a shop with themed souvenirs - T-shirts, baseball caps, socks with quotes from the movie, a cookbook with recipes for shrimp from the restaurant and other interesting things.

For decades, the city was in decline. The army came to the aid of tourism and oil fields. In the 60s, the McDonnell Douglas aircraft plant and the US Navy base were opened here. The 60s in America are also known for other trends, such as the hippie movement, and other outcasts, marijuana lovers and free lifestyles who, for unknown reasons, loved the long beaches around Long Beach. Maybe that's why by the beginning of the 70s the city again fell into desolation.

Nowadays, there are a lot of different enterprises, a number of factories for the production of car parts, aircraft, home accessories and electronics. It is in the business center Long Beach the headquarters of such giants as Molina Healthcare and the North American division of Epson were equipped. The development of the aerospace industry and high technology contributed greatly to the formation of the city.

The most important operation of the ship, called the Diaper, was carried out at the end of the war, when more than 22,000 wives and children of military personnel arrived on the Queen Mary in the United States.
