The famous flower park in Holland. Keukenhof flower park in Holland. Shopping and souvenirs

In the small Dutch town of Lisse, which is located between Amsterdam and The Hague, there is one of the most famous and amazing sights of the Netherlands - the Keukenhof Royal Tulip Park. Our correspondent Grigory Bedenko shares his impressions and very beautiful pictures of spring flowers that have become a symbol of the country.

Flowers are very fond of flowers in the Netherlands. Especially tulips, which have become a kind of national symbol. Today, the bulbs of these plants are supplied for cultivation in almost all countries of the world where landscape design is developed. And in Holland itself there are dozens of agricultural firms that earn hundreds of millions of euros on the tulip business.

But why exactly here these flowers began to be cultivated so actively? The history of Dutch tulips is absolutely amazing. They were brought here from Turkey by the sailors of the East India Company in the middle of the 16th century. In those days, the Dutch economy was on the rise, and tulips of various shades became collectibles for the local aristocracy.

However, after a few decades, something unimaginable began to happen to the flowers that local peasants grew for the rich - the plants were cultivated from the same bulbs from year to year, but they began to change color. One of the most common transformations was the appearance of stripes of various shades on the petals. Only in the XX century, scientists found out that this was the result of a viral disease of flowers, which were relocated to an unusual climatic zone for them.

The owner of a single tulip bulb could become the owner of a new, unique variety, which cost a lot of money on the tulip market. In 1612 (!), The Florilegium catalog was published in Amsterdam with drawings of 100 varieties of tulips. The rare Semper Augustus bulb cost up to 4,600 florins in 1634-1636. For comparison: for a pig they gave 30 florins, for a cow - 100. Tulips in Holland, without exaggeration, became gold.

It got to the point that a kind of stock market appeared in the tulip business. And this is in the 17th century! Special illustrated catalogs were published with detailed description flower and the starting price for it.

Merchants could buy these virtual flowers and resell them without even holding them in their hands. Tulip exchanges, called colleges, operated in many cities in Holland, where, in fact, gold was exchanged for flowers that exist only on paper and in the imagination of brokers. Such collegiums were very merry - local taverns were used as premises, where booze flowed like a river.

Interestingly, tulip prices did not drop even during the plague that hit Europe in 1636, when many peasants were left without a livelihood.

But, as one would expect, the tough laws of the market worked in the case of the main symbol of Holland - the tulip bubble eventually burst. By the middle of the 17th century, that is, 100 years after the appearance of tulips in Europe, the most active speculators of the tulip market felt that demand for them was beginning to fall, and provoked panic.

Those who did not react to this in time were forced to subsequently buy bulbs for a lot of money. And, as a rule, having paid in gold, they could no longer resell them. The bursting financial bubble made some poor and others very rich.

Everything that happened in the 16th-17th centuries with tulips in Holland had such a strong influence on the culture and economy of this country that it changed it forever. And today the tulip remains not only a symbol, but also one of the main components of the agricultural economy and exports.

Interestingly, tulips bloom in Holland for a very short period of the year, from about the 20th of March to the 20th of May. During the same period, the Keukenhof Park was in operation. It is closed for the rest of the year. Therefore, if you go to Holland for tulips, it is best in spring, somewhere in the middle of April.

Keukenhof translates from Dutch as "kitchen park". It is also known as the Garden of Europe. In addition to tulips, you can find other garden flowers here, for example, daffodils of various types. The park is located on 32 hectares of land and is surrounded by tulip fields.

In total, about 7 million tulips of a hundred (!) Different species have been planted in the park. In the center of the park there is a large pond where swans and other water birds live.

Here you can find tulips of completely unimaginable shapes and colors. Sometimes flowers need to be looked at for a long time to understand that it is a tulip, and not some other flower. What the virus did to Dutch tulips in the 16th century has become fertile ground for the delights of modern breeders.

In addition to landscape meadows, the park also has three large greenhouses where daffodils, crocuses, lilacs, roses and even orchids are grown. There are many trees in the park, the air here is clean and filled with the aromas of flowers.

Keukenhof appeared in 1840. It was designed by the Dutch architect David Jan Zocher. Even earlier, in the pre-Tulip era, in the 15th century, a wealthy Countess Jacobe van Bayeren lived in these places, who issued an order to build a small town, whose inhabitants were to engage in agriculture, in particular, growing greenery. According to Zocher's project, the park was planned and created in the English style - with ponds, fountains and large meadows where one could play golf.

Today, hundreds of landscape designers are closely monitoring to ensure that everything is as Zocher intended. Tulips - flowers are quite delicate and require constant attention. Every morning in the park, lawns are carefully mowed, flower meadows are watered and leaves fallen from trees are removed.

Keukenhof has been awarded a huge number of all kinds of prizes and awards. Today it is the largest park of bulbous plants in the world; it has no analogues anywhere. There is even a kind of Walk of Fame in the park. Tulips grow here, named after famous personalities, including fairytale characters... For example, you can see the varieties "Vladimir Putin", "Aishwarya Rai", "Little Red Riding Hood", "Mickey Mouse".

The culmination tourist season in the Keukenhof park, there is a flower parade (Bloemencorso Bollenstreek), where figures of various fairy-tale characters are decorated with them. Keukenhof is visited annually by up to 800 thousand tourists from different countries the world. The park has its own website. It is best to come here for the opening - at 8:00 in the morning.

There are few people here in the morning, and besides, light is best for photographing flowers. You can get to the park from Schiphol Airport using a special shuttle bus route 858. A round trip ticket costs 9 euros. Buses run every 15 minutes. The road from the airport to the park takes about 40 minutes. An entrance ticket to the park for an adult will cost 15 euros. For this money, you can walk all day if you have enough strength!

Dutch park Keukenhof is called the most beautiful spring park in the world. For his sake, 1.5 million tourists come to the Netherlands and all, without exception, remain in full of delight. History of the Keukenhof park

In the 15th century, the Keukenhof was a small garden around the castle of the Countess of the Alleged Bavarian (Jacoba van Beieren), where herbs and vegetables were grown for the kitchen. Hence the name "Keukenhof" - a kitchen garden. In 1865, landscape architect Jan Zocher and his son Louis, commissioned by the successive owners of the estate, Baron and Baroness Van Pallandt, created a new design in the English style. This layout is the basis modern park Keukenhof, which opened to the public in 1950.

The main mission of Keukenhof then and now is to present the possibilities of the Dutch flower sector - one of the leading sectors of the country's economy. Buyers can appreciate the whole variety of flower bulbs from leading suppliers, and ordinary visitors can plunge into the world of flowers and beauty.

The theme of each Keukenhof season is different. In 2018 it was called Romance in flowers. 7 themed gardens are designed to inspire visitors to create their own garden and home design. This year's column will consist of 20 flower platforms and about 40 various vehicles decorated with flowers. The movement of the procession is accompanied by the play of orchestras and groups. In terms of scope, the Flower Parade in the Netherlands can be compared, perhaps, to the equally famous Lemon Festival in French Menton, where citrus structures are transported through the city streets. However, the first is undoubtedly more ambitious. Compositions of tulips, hyacinths, daffodils and other spring flowers amaze the imagination and evoke one thought - "How can this be created in the shortest possible time?" Since every year the parade is dedicated to a new theme, the decorations are not repeated, but become a surprise for the audience. It is worth remembering that on the day of the passage through the Keukenhof flower parade, there is a real pandemonium here, so all entrance tickets (to the park) should be purchased in advance, and also come early in the morning to take strategically comfortable seats to observe these bright and cheerful processions. The spectacle itself is free, although the organizers offer to buy seats in the stands, but usually it is not necessary to see everything.

Lisse is located in the southern part of Holland. Most visitors come here in the spring to admire the blooming fields at the Keukenhof amusement park. This park is visited by over 800,000 visitors over 2 months and is open every year and is one of the top tourist attractions in the Netherlands.
The city of Liss and the Keukenhof park are located in South Holland close to Hillegom and south of Haarlem, southwest of Amsterdam. Keukenhof Park is huge, located on 32 hectares, it contains not only tulips, but also hyacinths, daffodils and other spring flowers.
Story:
The Lisse village was first mentioned in 1198. In the Middle Ages, there were many warriors here, because the area was rather poor. Peat mining and agricultural activities were the main source of income in the region. That all changed when the production of flower bulbs became popular. The local soil proved to be very suitable for the growth of tulips and other flowers, which brought wealth to the city of Lisse and the surrounding regions. At the end of the Middle Ages, the Lisse area belonged to the gardens and hunting grounds of Slot Teylingen, a castle in the nearby town of Teylingen, of which only ruins now remain. Among the most famous inhabitants of the castle were Jacqueline, Countess of Hainaut, who lived there in the 15th century.

Legend has it that herbs were harvested for her kitchen (in Dutch "keuken") from the place where the Keukenhof Park is now, hence its name for the park.
Keukenhof Castle, opposite Keukenhof Park, was built around 1642. In 1840, the park was rebuilt by the son and father of the Zocher family, who also designed the famous Vondelpark (Vondelpare) in Amsterdam. This project laid the foundation for the Keukenhof park. The castle was enlarged in 1865 and completely renovated. The tulip gardens were only created in 1949 as a floral exhibition initiated by the Mayor of Lisse and some prominent local growers. Since its opening in 1950, the number of visitors to the park has increased dramatically.
