History

Base

Back in the 1950s, the issue of active development arose in the Jewish Agency. At the junction of the Upper and Lower Galilee, the Land Department of the Jewish Agency decided to establish new town... The idea was supported by the Jewish Agency's Settlement Department, as well as its head -.

In 1960, the planning, design and construction of a new city began. The purpose of its founding was to increase the Jewish population in the area of the predominant Arab population. Also strategic was the location of the city in the middle of the Akko-highway.

After the appointment of Levi Eshkol as prime minister in 1963, it was decided to prioritize the development of Galilee. This also applied to the founding of Karmiel. The new city was supposed to become an industrial, financial and social center for those around settlements, with a population of up to 50 thousand people.

On October 29, 1964, in the presence of distinguished guests, Karmiel was founded. The ceremony was widely covered by the press. The industrial zone of the city was opened by the Minister of Industry and Trade Pinchas Sapir. The city development plan envisaged the gradual development of a business and shopping center near residential areas. The implementation of the plan began in 1969, led by Adam Tal.

The first groups of the population were both natives of the country and new immigrants.

1960-90

Later, the city administration was headed by Avraham Argov. After Argov's resignation in 1968, Baruch Wenger became the head of the local council.

On November 20, 1986, the local council was transformed into a municipality, and Baruch Wenger became the first mayor. After the death of Baruch Wenger on November 22, 1988 and subsequent elections, Adi Eldar was elected mayor, who has held this position to this day.

In 1981, the building of the Absorption Center was built to receive repatriates from different countries- participants in the programs of the Jewish Agency. In the early 1990s, there was an explosive growth in the population due to a wave of repatriation from the USSR, and later from the CIS and Baltic countries. Also, the natives of the country and old-timers from other regions of Israel moved to the Karmiel.

Our city is quite young - it was founded in 1964 in the Western Galilee. The name Karmiel ("Vineyard of the Lord") comes from the Hebrew name for the valley of Beit ha-Kerem, in which it is located. Wonderful parks and gardens of Karmiel

I especially want to mention the pride of Karmiel - wonderful and such diverse city parks. There are six of them in our small town. Park "a-Galil" - one of the largest and most beautiful city parks in Israel. Picturesque landscapes, places for romantic walks, an amphitheater, flower beds, on which in the evening they turn on beautiful lighting. The enchanting, serene atmosphere can be felt by the ornamental lake in which lilies grow. Think about the eternal to the sound of falling water near artificial waterfalls.

In the park "Mishpaha" (family) it is really pleasant to have a rest with the whole family. Children can have fun in interesting playgrounds, play big chess, travel in a maze of bushes. Well, parents will not be bored either - there are mini-golf and bowling grounds, a cafe.

A park in the Ramat Rabin area is associated with the history of Israel. On its territory are the ruins of a Byzantine church, on the floor of which the remains of an ancient mosaic have been preserved. And you can also see the building of the ancient monastery, built during the period of the Crusaders. There is also Ophira Park in the city center, Alon and Makosh parks.

We have no problems at all with the purchase of groceries and all sorts of different things. The prices are quite affordable, there is a large selection of goods. Big shopping center"Big" is located in the industrial zone, there are more than 50 stores of Israeli and international chains. "Kikar Air" ("City Square") is also a multi-storey shopping center with a large assortment of all sorts of things.

Repatriates from former countries The CIS likes to use non-kosher stores of the Raduga, Tiv-Tam, and other private stores. In addition to Israeli, you can buy native products from Russia, Ukraine, Georgia and other former republics and Europe there. Supermarkets have clean and tidy shelves, there is a variety of varieties of products, a lot of discount promotions.

In grocery stores at the end of the week, after 1 pm, prices are reduced to a minimum. This is not even in Haifa :)
