  • Last Minute Tours to Russia

Anyone who wants to know Russia should look at Moscow from here.

A. P. Chekhov

There are not many places in the city that participate in the life of almost every inhabitant. Wedding corteges come here, artists and writers admire the panorama of the city, schoolchildren celebrate graduation here, students rest here and skiers train here ... In a word, if the Kremlin is the heart of the capital, then Vorobyovy Gory is no less than its soul.

From the village to the cultural center

According to legend, Vorobyovy Gory got its name thanks to the name of the priest Vorobya, who owned these territories, who parted with them in favor of the Grand Duchess Sofia Vitovtovna. From that moment until the very 19th century, Vorobyovy Gory was a favorite resting place for Moscow princes and tsars. In Soviet times, Vorobyovy Gory was also not ignored: first, almost by accident, changing their name to Lenin, and then choosing them as the location of the country's first university.

During the existence of the USSR, Vorobyovy Gory has radically changed. At the time of the foundation of the university (1949), the wooded bank of the Moskva River was inhabited mainly by moose, wild boars and hares (which, by the way, were regularly seen by students back in the 80s). In 1953, when the university was completed, the design of the observation deck was completed. From that moment on, the edge of the Sparrow Hills became a traditional place of national festivities, and not only the residence of kings and princes.

What to see

It is better to start a walk in Vorobyovy Gory from the building of Moscow State University (10 minutes walk from the metro station "University" or 3 minutes by minibus). Walking along the Alley of Scientists, you will come to the observation deck, from which Karamzin, Lermontov, Dostoevsky, Tolstoy, Gorky, Blok, Bulgakov admired, and although the writers of the past saw a completely different city, you will get no less pleasure. As in the palm of your hand, you will see the domes and skyscrapers of the capital, the picturesque bend of the Moskva River and the Luzhniki Stadium, located on the opposite bank. Arriving at the site in the evening, you can easily feel like the heroes of Bulgakov's novel "The Master and Margarita" - it was from here that they set off on their mystical journey.

If the Kremlin is the heart of the capital, then the Vorobyovy Gory is no less than its soul.

Then you have a way to the Moscow River. Vorobyovy Gory is a nature conservation area where many rare plants for Moscow have survived. There are a lot of animals and birds; there are places in the park where you can feed them. An ecological path is organized on the territory, which is convenient for walking. It will also be interesting for children, in the middle of the walk they will find a playground.

There is a cable car all year round, which you can use if you decide to go back to the observation deck or shorten the forest walk in favor of a sports one.

There is a wonderful walking area along the banks of the Moskva River. Here you can rent skates or a bicycle and ride along the river on good asphalt. The Vorobyovy Gory metro station is located on a bridge thrown across the river. If you wish, you can continue moving up the river to Neskuchny Garden. In the summer, such a walk can be made on river tram, its station is also called "Vorobyovy Gory".

The park does not calm down even in winter time - there is a ski slope here. Sleigh rides are traditionally organized, and a cross-country ski trail is laid in the park.

Vorobyovy Gory is a forested area on the high right bank of the Moskva River and one of the favorite resting places of Muscovites. Vorobyovy Gory is considered one of the seven hills of Moscow; the largest observation deck of the capital is located here, from which a delightful view of the surroundings opens. You will see a beautiful bend of the Moskva River, the Kremlin towers and the Luzhniki Stadium, on the right - Neskuchny Sad, on the left - the Novodevichy Convent.

Traditionally, the newlyweds come here on the wedding day, and in the evenings friends of the same interests, including bikers and street racers, gather. The show of retro cars is periodically held here.

Those who prefer peace and solitude more can go deep into the green massif and take a walk in the forest, as well as along the ponds located closer to Neskuchny Garden. Vorobyovy Gory is located near the center of Moscow - 5.5 km from the Kremlin. At the same time, despite the global development, untouched areas of clean forest with old large trees that have survived for more than one century have been preserved here.

The pedestrian zone of the Moskva River with a length of about 10 km, including Krymskaya and Pushkinskaya, Andreevskaya and Vorobyevskaya embankments, passes through the forest park.

In the spring summer time on Vorobyovy Gory you can rent a bicycle or roller skates. The rental offices are located on the embankment near the funicular and next to the exit to Vorobyovskoe shosse.

How to get to Vorobyovy Gory, metro station

  • By metro - Vorobyovy Gory station, also nearby Frunzenskaya and University metro stations.

For those who arrived by car, there are parking spaces next to the observation deck on Kosygina Street, opposite the Moscow State University building and not far from the intersection of Kosygina Street with Vernadsky Avenue.

Vorobyovy Gory - observation deck

The observation deck is located at the very top of the Sparrow Hills, at the intersection of Kosygina Street with University Square. There are telescopes installed here, and their use is free. The opening panorama of Moscow fascinates with its severe beauty and a small haze over the city.

Near the observation deck, as well as on the waterfront, there are cafes where you can eat.

But in the next seven years, work was carried out sluggishly, and soon completely stopped. According to the official version, due to the unreliability of the soil, the construction of the temple was stopped. At the same time, it turned out that a million rubles from the money allocated for the construction of the cathedral had been embezzled. The construction managers were charged with embezzlement and embezzlement and brought to justice. The author of the project Vitberg was innocently convicted and sent into exile
  • Throughout its history, Vorobyovy Gory several times became a viewing platform for conquerors - from here the Crimean Khan Kazy-Girei and the Polish hetman Khotkevich looked at the capital.
