And Costa Rica is the current leader among many countries for attractive immigration. Both countries are located in Central America, and are adjacent.

In fact, the countries have a lot in common, for example, access to the Pacific Ocean and the Caribbean coast. Also, these countries have recently become especially popular, as tourist destinations... Both countries have cool territories in mountainous regions and places on the coast with a tropical climate, where various diasporas of emigrants have concentrated and have already settled.

How to choose and figure out where it is better to live, and which of these countries to choose?

These countries are similar in many respects, and recently ranked among the first places in the ranking of "Best Places to Retire" among the countries of Central America. I would also like to say that Panama and Costa Rica have the same - a temperate tropical climate, modern living conditions at a low cost, good health care and a number of all kinds of leisure activities. But even with this similarity, you can see the individual advantages of one country over another. In this article, we will look at and compare the basic factors for successful living in each of these countries.

Providing home services

Both countries offer a variety of services to facilitate home life. These include: a caregiver for your children, a personal driver, a gardener, a caretaker, and a maid who will do the housework and run errands for grocery shopping, dry cleaning, or laundry. In Panama, you get all these services for only $ 15 per day with a six-day work week. But despite the fact that in Costa Rica the payment for such services may be higher, Costa Rica is still more attractive in this indicator. The fact is that in Costa Rica, despite slightly higher costs, the level of service is much higher than in Panama, so you do not need to spare a few dollars for the quality provided.

Communication

In terms of the provision of communication services, of course, Panama has the advantage. IN Latin America in this direction Panama takes one of the leading places. Especially noteworthy is the quality and prevalence of broadband Internet access. There are also many points throughout the country that provide free wireless Wi-Fi service. Panama was recently ranked second in Latin America for Internet technology provided and first in wireless access Wi-Fi. Therefore, such well-known multinational companies as Philips, Dell and 3M decided to establish their headquarters in Panama.

In turn, Costa Rica will improve its Internet capabilities and last years increased Internet speed by 43% from the previous level. Today the traffic speed is close to 2.1 Mbit / s, given that video viewing requires at least 1.5 Mbit / s, and in high quality HD, 4 Mbit / s is required.

Accommodation options

The advantages of a particular country depend on the area that a person chooses to live in, as well as other factors influencing the choice. In order not to list them all point by point, we will analyze the preferences of emigrants by criteria such as climate, infrastructure and proximity to attractions. So most popular mountain town in Costa Rica, among the emigrants from North America is Atenas, which is located in the Central Valley, surrounded by beautiful mountains... Here, the weather is mild throughout the year; the city is located near the capital of San Jose, where the largest concentration of emigrants is. In turn, the city of Boquet in Panama offers conditions no worse than Atenas, one could even say better. The same coolness, only with better roads and infrastructure that allow you to easily and quickly get to various areas, from the foot of the volcano to the azure coast.

City to live, again you can give preference to Panama. The capital Panama City is a large cosmopolitan center that provides everything its residents need, is interesting for tourists and attracts international business and investment. Modern city offers a host of world class shops, hotels, clubs and restaurants, and 650 acres (263.045 ha) of rainforest within the city. The opposite of this is San Jose, Costa Rica, which is smaller in size and less attractive in terms of tourist attractions.

Public beaches

In this subheading, the preponderance is on the side of Costa Rica, it lies in the correct approach of the governing bodies to the organization of services and the availability of the necessary infrastructure for the beaches. For decades, expats and travelers have been coming to the Costa Rican coast to bask in the sun, have fun and appreciate the level of service they provide. In Panama, you can also find such places for recreation, especially Coronado, near the capital of Panama City, can be highlighted, but I would like to note that the level of services and the arrangement of beaches leaves much to be desired, and is also clearly inferior to many cities on the Costa Rica coast.

Holidays on the islands

Comparing the two countries in the "Islands" section is inappropriate. The fact is that Costa Rica does not own a large number of islands. There is the island of Kano, which offers an exceptionally tranquil environment among coral reefs and nothing more. Panama, on the other hand, gives the opportunity not only to relax on their untouched islands, but also allows you to choose many of them for acquisition of private property. For example, the Boca Chica archipelago provides a 400-acre private island where you can buy a piece of paradise, with plots ranging from five to fifty acres of island land on display. The objects on display are located in close proximity to the coast of the mainland of the country and next to others attractive places Chiriki area.

Green Zone

For Panama and Costa Rica, nature has given every chance that people can live in harmony with the environment. But on this moment these chances are better used by Costa Rica, while Panama is clearly lagging behind. More than 25% of its territory Costa Rica has declared National parks and fights against deforestation and pollution environment... There is an understanding of the local population to protect the ecology of the country. Electricity generation in Costa Rica is based on environmentally friendly technologies, accounting for 90% of all electricity production in the state.

Panama also has a lot of forests, but the difficulty is that these are sometimes hard-to-reach and remote areas. In terms of cleanliness of cities, Panama also has more disadvantages. Both countries have the opportunity to introduce their tourists to their rain jungle and mangroves, as well as offer their the best places for scuba diving.

Living wage

Here I would like to highlight a small advantage of Panama. Compared to the cost of living in the United States and Canada, Panama and Costa Rica look more rosy than their northern friends. By comparing them, one can see the definite advantages of Panama in terms of consumer prices for many products and services. Of course, in the two states there are quite developed cities and regions, where the prices for rent, services and products are within the countries of North America, but still the costs are lower. It is known that in Costa Rica there is a very high import tax, it is very difficult to acquire many household goods and electronics. Car prices are also more expensive than in Panama, here is a list of some of the price points in Panama and Costa Rica:

  • Panama's core consumer prices are 10.35% lower than Costa Rica.
  • The rental price is 71.24% higher than in Costa Rica.
  • Restaurant prices in Panama are 19.73% lower.
  • Prices in Panama for a group of food products are 5.54% lower.
  • Purchase prices for food are 17.60% lower than in Costa Rica.

One of the many factors that attracts many expats to Panama is its Pensionado pension scheme. With certain guarantees of pension financing, the state provides discounts to pensioners - emigrants living in its territory. These are discounts from 10 to 50% on various types of services and entertainment, such as: healthcare, visits to cinemas, restaurants, hotel accommodation.

Transport connection

In order to get to one of these countries, you will need to decide on the destination and purchase a plane ticket. Transport links in Panama and Costa Rica are quite good. Panama stands out for the quality of reception and departure of international flights at Tokumen Airport. There are also a number of flights to various cities in Northern and South Americawhich allow Panama to provide access to hard-to-reach areas. Costa Rica has more developed flights to various areas of Central America, which creates many simplified options for getting to the nearest popular tourist places region.

Business environment

The World Bank's international ratings for the ease of doing business ranked Panama 55th out of 189 countries in 2014. In 2015, the country's rating improved by 3 points to 52nd place. Costa Rica ranked 78th in 2014 and, according to the World Bank, has worsened its position, moving to 82nd place. Fitch Agency (New York) also in 2015 lowered the level of long-term foreign investments of Costa Rica to BB + and short-term to B. interest rates. Already by these indicators one can judge the business activity of these two countries. The government of Panama, especially in recent years, has adopted many different laws regulating relations between the state and foreign investors. To the international community, Panama is demonstrating real action in the reforms of its legislation that bring the country closer to compliance with international business standards. Costa Rica is a more bureaucratic country, where reform processes are lagging behind modern realitiestherefore the country has higher taxes and fees.

Banking services

Fluctuations in the provision of banking services will continue for a long time, this is due to various changes in regulations, both in the USA and in Panama and Costa Rica. But according to North Americans, in recent years, the banking services provided in Costa Rica have been better compared to Panama. Attention was focused on the procedure for opening a bank account and its maintenance. While both countries are careful in verifying a prospect's personal details, income statements and residence, Costa Rica has much more attractive requirements for opening an account than Panama. So, to open an account in Costa Rica, the minimum deposit requirement is 25 USD, and in Panama the minimum is 1000 USD. In addition, Panama banks may require a number of additional documents confirming the employment of the future client, as well as one or more letters of recommendation from banks that previously served the client. Here you need to understand the pros and cons of the differences. The currency of Costa Rica is the "colon", the rate of which for today against the US dollar is: 1 USD \u003d 535.70 CRC. In the event of a financial crisis in the country, there are large inflationary risks, and the Costa Rican Colon could depreciate sharply, which will directly affect the financial system of Costa Rica. Panama uses "balboa", which is equal to the US dollar and does not print money, perhaps that is why Panamanian banks require additional documents when opening an account in order to avoid risks and weed out financially unreliable applicants in time.

Investment incentive

To more realistically assess the advantages of one country over another, you can turn to the history of twenty years ago and analyze the events. More than twenty years ago, flows of emigrants from North America poured into Costa Rica, mostly American retirees. Costa Rica at that time attracted foreign retirees to live in the country, guaranteeing certain incentives that are no longer valid. Dozens of years later, many pensioners who moved to Costa Rica became uncomfortable living in the crowded society of their compatriots and other emigrants, and they began to turn their attention to neighboring country with the same climate - Panama. Also for similar reasons, emigrants began to leave Mexico. Panama, in turn, did not lose its chance to attract foreign capital and has created various laws to promote the development of the economy through foreign investment. Emphasis was placed on attracting investments related to the development of tourism in the country, for which the state provides tax incentives and certain privileges. Panama is currently inviting retirees from America and Europe.

There are various types of visas for obtaining a residence permit and obtaining citizenship, which are accompanied by benefits, determine the minimum size of investment deposits in the country and the conditions for registration. After going through the paperwork, immigrants in Panama have the opportunity to receive funding from a Panamanian bank, which they could not receive in Costa Rica.

Health care

Health care levels in Costa Rica and Panama are quite high and inexpensive. At one time, Costa Rican health was advertised internationally as “ best country with an inexpensive medical program. " The quality of Costa Rica's health care system is ranked 36th in the International Health Organization rankings, with the United States ranking 37th. Both countries have a sufficient number of modern hospitals and clinics employing qualified doctors with knowledge in Englishwho received their medical education in the USA and Europe. Many medical institutions in Panama bear world famous names, such as the Johns Hopkins Clinic, which is also in the United States. The disadvantage of Panama in this industry is that the location of medical facilities is mainly located in large cities such as Panama City and David, it is difficult to obtain full medical care in rural areas and more remote areas of the country.

Common consumption goods

As mentioned above, the cost of living in Costa Rica is higher than that of Panama. This is especially evident when buying consumer goods, products of such a group as groceries are 15-20% more expensive than in Panama. The level of tax on export goods is so high that it is sometimes impossible to find some of them in the store. The value added tax in Costa Rica is 14%, while in Panama it is only 7%. Panama also has several duty-free zones, which translates into lower taxes. Panama can be called the center of trade in Latin America, where many people come to buy cheaper equipment and electronics than in their own country.

Property right

Panama at this point is regarded as an impeccable leader, because the state does not impose serious restrictions on property purchased by foreigners on its territory. Foreign corporations or individuals cannot buy real estate that is 10 kilometers from the border, and there are also some restrictions regarding coastal zones Panama, where the construction of facilities closer than 20 meters to the end of the tide is prohibited, or a special building permit from local authorities is possible. In all other respects, the rights of foreigners regarding the acquisition of property are no different from the rights local residents... Costa Rica's laws can be called the opposite. Foreigners do not have the right to purchase land, and 95% of all the country's beaches are publicly owned, which cannot be owned by foreign citizens if they have lived in Costa Rica for less than five years. There is an option to use the property if 49% of the property is owned by a Costa Rican corporation, which is owned by a Costa Rican citizen by birth. So you see that the process of buying a property is much easier in Panama and if you turn to a qualified real estate lawyer, you can simplify the buying process and avoid possible oversights.

Hello everyone! When I was in Central America, I wrote a number of informative posts, but did not manage to publish them on the blog. Then she began to actively ride around Europe, and it was more interesting to talk about the countries of the European Union. But lately, people have increasingly come to me with questions about traveling to Nicaragua, Panama and other Honduras, so I decided that there should be posts, then I will answer the questions of traveling citizens with a link to the corresponding blog article. Anything is more convenient than writing the same thing every time. Useful practical information There are not so many in Latin America in Runet, maybe that's why few people go there for a long time, so I will increase the literacy of the population. : D
p.s. Please do not say that people do not go to Latina because they have no money for it. The overcrowding of Asian beaches testifies to the opposite, and the difference in price is not so significant, and no one has canceled ticket sales;)

Today I'll tell you about moving Panama Costa Rica by land... There are several options for crossing the border of these countries, we crossed from the Caribbean coast, as we were traveling from in Panama. I must say right away that I am not a fan of buying some transfers, shuttles and other things from travel agencies, but in this case the shuttle was worth its 25$ more than ever. So, what is the transfer.

First of all, from Bocas del Toro you can sail by boat until (20-30 minutes). There you change into a minibus (about 40 minutes to the border). At the border, you unload from the minibus with things, go into a small room, buy a Bocas del Toro sticker for 3$ ... This is a must, they cannot be released without it.

Then you come to the window, where the grandfather manually !! rewrites your data in a magazine, at the same time pawing your passport with dirty hands and chewing a bun. That's it, the exit stamp has been received, and now the bridge of death over the green river awaits you. It is better to hide your passport somewhere, otherwise it will fall out into the river with crocodiles. There are such holes in the bridge that you yourself can dive with all the good if you step inaccurately. This photo was taken from Costa Rica, here the bridge is better patched up than from Panama. It is immediately evident that Costa Rica loves and expects its tourists:

Next is the window with the guys from Costa Rica, in which they issue an immigration card. You fill it out quickly, give your passport out the window, get a stamp. They don't ask for money. I had a one-year Polish Schengen visa valid for another 7 months from the date of entry into the country. They slapped me a stamp for 30 days, although Timatik writes that belarusians and russians from schengen visa to Costa Rica is not required, and you can stay in the country until 90 days... Such an injustice, well, figs with them. All other guys from the bus were stamped for 90 days.

After that we loaded into another minibus and cheerfully drove to Puerto Viejo past plantations with banana palms in blue bags. 40 kilometers, an hour on the way, and we are already splashing in the waters of the Caribbean Sea !!! In total, the entire journey from Bocas del Toro to Puerto Viejo (Panama Costa Rica, respectively) took about 3 hours to cross the border.

IMPORTANT!There is often information on the network that when crossing the border between Panama and Costa Rica on the ground, they are required to show a bus or plane ticket as proof that you plan to leave the country (in this case, Costa Rica), so many people buy fake bus tickets , which are then not used. We were not asked for any tickets or proof of solvency, only a passport.

All goods and services, including shipping and airport tax, must be paid in convertible pesos. CUC $ also indicates most prices in tourist areas and resort areas, while change is often given with both types of local currency.
