How to get to Tulum from Playa del Carmen and Cancun

To get from Playa del Carmen to Tulum, you can use second class bus by Mayab. We just went on this. All buses leave from ADO Bus Station on Fifth Avenue (Terminal del Centro). A 2nd class bus ticket costs 38 pesos and takes one hour. The first leaves at 7:20.

Ticket for first class bus ADO costs 76 pesos. The first leaves at 8:00. Only this price is indicated above the cashier, so you need to ask the operator about the 2nd class buses.

Do not forget that you should always ask about second-class buses at the ticket office, since there is no information about them on the website, not all flights may be displayed on the board (or not at all).

To move Playa del Carmen-Tulum, you can use collectively for 40 pesos, the only problem is that passengers with luggage are not taken on the minibus. The option is more suitable for those who just want to go to Tulum from Playa for a day.

Discounts! Don't forget about coupons for a 10% discounton your next trip if you are using ADO buses. Coupons are printed directly on the boarding pass, so do not throw them away after your trip.

First class bus timetables and prices can be viewed.

Attention! A reminder to bring warm clothes on the bus, especially if a night move is expected. The air conditioner works constantly, so it is very cold (+ 16-18 degrees, plus the icy air is constantly blowing). Locals, who are in the know, generally travel with blankets.

How to get to the Tulum pyramids from the city and back

There are several options for how to get from the city to the Tulum archaeological site:

  • By minibus. Collectiveo (minibuses) can be found almost opposite the bus station (if you stand with your back to the station, they will be slightly to the right across the road). The fare is 20 pesos. Drive from the city to the turn in less than ten minutes. The minibus is passing (goes to Playa del Carmen), therefore it takes you only to the turn, from which you have to walk about 800 meters to the ruins or take a tourist train.
  • By bike. As for me, this is the ideal option (only about four kilometers to go). Bicycles are rented in a lot of places - in rental offices, in hotels and hostels. For a day of rent, you will have to pay from 80 to 100 pesos, for a day about 130 pesos.
  • By taxi. To be honest, the cost was not even recognized, but I think that the initially announced price will be very, very high, so bargain!

Prices and useful information

How much is the entrance ticket to the Tulum complex:59 pesos

Opening hours of the archaeological zone:daily from 8:00 to 17:00

How long does it take to inspect:i think an hour will be enough to see everything, since the complex is quite small. The rest is at your discretion, if you wish, you can sit down and admire the view Caribbean in combination with antiquities for at least several hours in a row. We spent about 1.5 hours on the ruins of Tulum, during which time we managed to go around some places twice, stand to admire the sea and take a bunch of photos.

How much money did we spend visiting the ruins in Tulum:278 pesos for two (entrance fees and two bike rental).

Excursions: at the turn to the ruins from the Tulum-Cancun highway, there are several tents offering tours. For example, we were offered for $ 33 (and this is at a discount if we use the offer here and now) entrance tickets to the complex + a boat trip, from which you can see the ruins of Tulum from the water and watch turtles in the water.

Recommendations:if you want to see the complex without crowds of tourists and in beautiful morning lighting, come to the opening, you will have about an hour, when there are not so many people, although you will not find complete loneliness even at eight in the morning.

Don't forget to bring your Panama hat and more watersunscreen wouldn't hurt either. Very hot!

Our accommodation in Tulum

Housing in Tulum had to be found on the spot. We did not manage to find anything suitable for booking in advance. All the options I found online were either expensive or just tents in some wild places.

Arriving in the city, things were left at the bus station in the storage room (guarda equipaje). Things can be left in an iron locker, which is locked; the key remains with the saleswoman of the station shop. Two of our large backpacks fit into the cell. We paid 20 pesos for an hour.

In an hour they found a place to live. Mostly we went to hotels near the station (on the central street of Cancun-Chetumal and parallel streets).

The first hotel we visited was Hotel Maya. A room with a large bed, private bathroom and wardrobe-table-alcove with a chair costs 300 pesos. Internet only in the hallway.

Then they went around a lot of hotels: the average price per room was 400-450 pesos, rarely 350 pesos, but the options were so-so. I don’t know, but in my opinion, for a village like Tulum it’s a little expensive.

As a result, we found a number in Hostel Rivera Maya (if you stand facing the bus station, it will be on the same side on the left, in front of the intersection). There iron door, which is almost permanently closed, although it bears the "Vacancy" sign. You just have to pull the string, the bell will ring upstairs and the door will open, or rather, someone will come out.

The owner offered us two options: a room with a fan for 300 pesos and an air-conditioned room for 350 pesos. We were so worn out in Playa that we really wanted an air-conditioned room. They said that we would stay for three days, but for 300)) The peasant thought and thought and gave us a room for 950 pesos in three days, and we agreed on that.

Our room is number 3. Large bed + small, mini-table and three plastic chairs. Sink directly in the room, bathroom with toilet and shower - separate (own). Theoretically, there is no Internet in the rooms, only at the reception, but the reception is through the wall, so we got a Wi-Fi in our room.

The street is full of cafes, retoranos, including almost opposite the hotel (across the road) - a komida bullfight for 55 pesos (very tasty). There are Extra, OXXO shops and grocery stores.

What we got: a fairly spacious bright room with a large bed. There is another small bed (we used it for folding things, since there were no shelves). If you are going to live in a room with three, then you will have to pay an additional 150 pesos for using the small bed.

In addition to the beds, the room has a small table and three chairs. The sink is taken out into the room, there is a bathroom with a shower. Hot water is available.

For three days, no one has cleaned or changed our linen, perhaps for more long term cleaning is implied (to be specified).

Theoretically, there is no Internet in the rooms, but our room number 3 was located across the wall from the reception, where the presence of the Internet is supposed to be, so the connection, although not good enough, was there. There are tables at the reception, you can sit to work, but only until 11 pm, then the owner comes and just silently turns off the light))

The location of the hotel is very convenient: in two steps the bus station, collectively to the ruins, opposite there is a cafe with a comida-corrida (ask menu del dia - menu del dia) for 55 pesos (they cook quite tasty), and there are plenty of other cafes nearby. restaurants. Many shops, including Express, where you can buy edible change.

Address: exact address don't know, see the location on the map below.

As an alternative option for finding accommodation in mexican cities I recommend paying attention to the Airbnb website. This is a resource where the owners offer their housing (rooms, apartments, houses) for rent. We have found excellent accommodation there in terms of value for money. Below are the most relevant sections of the site:

By clicking on the last link, you will be taken to a section where all the accommodation options in Mexico offered on Airbnb will be collected. There you can enter in the upper left corner the name of the city you are interested in and get a selection of housing for it, plus there is an opportunity to play with other parameters in order to choose the most suitable options for personal requests (the picture is enlarged):

For details on how the Airbnb service works and how to make a reservation, as well as a $ 20 bonus on first booking (for unregistered users), see my instructions article. There are also reviews and links to specific rooms and apartments that we rented with Andryusiks.

If you are used to booking hotel roomssites such as HotelLook.ru will help (this link will directly find options for hotels in Tulum, you just need to substitute your dates) and, of course, Booking.com (by the way, HotelLook searches for Booking as well). Also on Booking now you can book not only a single room, but entire apartments.

In addition, there is a general article - How to find accommodation while traveling, which can also come in handy.

The ruins are the third most visited tourist destination in the country. This pre-Colombian old City is located on a high 12-meter cliff on the shore of the Caribbean Sea, besides it is surrounded by thick fortress walls, at each corner of the wall there was watch tower... It was the most protected city at the time.
The uniqueness of the ancient city Tulum is that it is located near the sea, while all the other Mayan cities were built inland. Another exception is the defensive wall. As a rule, the Maya were not worth the defenses around the cities. But this is what allowed the city to exist longer.
At the time of the arrival of the conquistadors, old city was badly destroyed. At the end of the 16th century, it was completely abandoned.

13 survived to this day architectural structures: Temple of Frescoes, Temple of the Descending God, Temple of the Sea, Temple of the Wind God, Senote House, Chultun Well and several residential buildings.
Not far from the cliff is the El Castillo pyramid, which served as a beacon for ships. There are three entrances to the pyramid. The feathered serpent Kukulkan is depicted above each entrance.
Stone stairs lead to all buildings. Each house had columns and a small altar. All this testifies to the fact that in the past Tulum was a very prosperous city, and occupied an important place in the Mayan civilization.
The archaeological site can be visited from 8 am to 5 pm. It is best to go on an excursion in the early morning, when there are still no big clashes of tourists. Entrance ticket costs 60 pesos ($ 4). Guide services and filming permits are charged separately. Visits to most of the buildings are prohibited, as they are in a very ruined state.
Also inside the fortress you can visit several cafes, a restaurant and souvenir shops.

In a modern city, apart from residential buildings, there are government agencies, banks, a theater, a car rental office, shops, restaurants, and budget hotels.
In the central part of Tulum is the Zocalo Square. It is surrounded by a cafe, restaurant, city hall and a small park. This part of the city is much quieter and quieter compared to other areas, where the influx of tourists significantly exceeds the number local residents... It looks more like a provincial town than a popular resort.

In addition to ancient monuments, tourists are attracted local beaches... This resort area of \u200b\u200bTulum is often called the Riviera Maya. The tourist and entertainment zone of the resort stretches for several kilometers along the coast of the Caribbean Sea.
are considered one of best beaches Mexico. Turquoise clear water, fine white sand, well developed tourist infrastructure - all this characterizes the local resort perfectly. Another advantage is the excellent weather throughout the year in this part of the island.

Almost all of Tulum's beaches are public. However, most of them can only be accessed through a hotel or beach club.
The most popular beaches are: Playa Santa Fe, Playa Esperanza, Playa Condesa, Playa Pescadito, Playa Las Palmas.

Entertainment

In addition to lazy lying on the beach, you can go diving or snorkeling. Numerous caves with stalactites and stalagmites, rich water world will turn scuba diving into an exciting activity.
You can go on a short excursion into the jungle on motorcycles or ATVs. And for more extreme tourists, local tour operators offer a zip line through the jungle.

Tulum is the perfect place to combine total relaxation and endless adventure. This tranquil town on the Caribbean coast of Quintana Roo in Mexico is home to one of the best preserved Mayan sites and best hotelslocated on the Caribbean coast, which are business card of this town. The coast of Tulum is located in the east of the Yucatan Peninsula and is very small with a population of 15 thousand.

The city can be conditionally divided into three parts: ruin Mayan times, which are the main attraction, Indian village Pueblo and tourist entertainment partthat extends along beach strip and roads for several kilometers.

Beaches

Tulum beaches are extraordinary, known for their amazing tropical nature, sheer cliffs surrounding the coast, white sand, clear turquoise water, stunning underwater world, which attracts all divers the most.

Shopping

the main street Avenida tulum crowded with many shops with various souvenirs, as well as supermarkets and department stores where you can always bargain, especially if you purchase several items at once. In this case, it is possible to bring down the price by 2, or even 2.5 times, however, Indians are more generous with discounts, who give up in a couple of minutes, but Mexicans are very persistent and with an insulted look can throw off quite a bit.

Hotels

Hotels in Tulum are famous for their luxury and homeliness, which are small in themselves, with 5-20 rooms. Almost all hotels are located on coastline and have a gorgeous view of the ocean, but there are hotels located a little further from the coast, in the city center, in close proximity to all the entertainment infrastructure. Prices range from $ 20 per night per room - if you rent a private villa or bungalow, up to $ 100 for double occupancy.

Restaurants and cuisine

Tulum restaurants treat both local Mexican cuisine and the most diverse and delicious European cuisine. Most hotels include food, but you can also have a snack in restaurants located nearby. By the way, the further from resort area you stop to eat, the cheaper it will cost you. On average, you can eat well for 100 pesos (250 rubles).

With the onset of darkness, the city opens its doors to numerous bars and restaurants with entertainment program, dance and music. You can also visit the cinema located right on the roof.

Excursions

The name of the city "Tulum" is translated from Yucatec as "wall" or "fence" and this is not surprising and understandable, because the city is completely surrounded by a fortress wall up to 5 meters high with a thickness of 8 meters, including sheer cliffs... Some buildings of the local ancient Mayan civilizations have been perfectly preserved to this day, and the giant slab structures do not fit into any framework of generally accepted history at all, it is completely unclear how they could have been built in ancient times!

The excursion program should definitely include an interesting Temple with galleries of frescoes and sculptures, and archaeological complex, whose doors are open from 8 am to 4:30 pm, where the entrance fee will be 57 pesos. It is recommended to visit this place either in the morning or closer to closing, because there are always a lot of tourists here during the day.

Tulum also boasts beautiful caves and cenoteswhich is a true paradise for diving enthusiasts.

Playing an important role for the Maya in this dry land, the cenotes were also a place of worship. The Maya used these wells as a means of communicating with the gods. They were used as fresh water supplies, but also as a place of worship. Tulum has a lot of such cenotes that deserve attention and admiration.

Transport

You can get around Tulum by either a rented car or a local minibus, but the small size of the city is quite conducive to cycling, which can be rented for 80 pesos per day - this is the most common form of transport here among tourists and locals.

Climate

May is the hottest month in Tulum with an average temperature of 28 ° C and the coldest January at 24 ° C. The wettest month is September with an average of 220 mm of rain. Best monthto swim in the sea - August, when the average sea temperature is +29 ° C.

How to get there

You can get to Tulum either from Cancun or from Playa del Carmen. Buses from Cancun leave every hour, the journey time is 2 hours, and the cost will be 80-100 pesos. It is also possible to travel for 50 pesos in a local minibus (collectivo), which during the trip makes stops near the archaeological sites.

If you want to explore the Mayan ruins, you can ask the driver to stop at the first stop, namely at the intersection, from where the road stretches 1.5 km to the ruins. There is always an opportunity to take a taxi at a cost of $ 40 -50 $ or rent a car.

Beach video

The city of Tulum in Mexico offers best views rest for the modern tourist who wants to relax in a comfortable hotel and fill his weekend with vivid impressions. Lovers of archeology and history can plunge into the world of the mysterious Mayan tribes, and those eager to visit rare and untouched places can dive into caves and cenotes.

The nature and beauty of places in Tulum itself and its surroundings confirms the fact that our land is alive and amazing. All processes occurring in its depths and on the surface are the result of amazing mechanisms. The landscape of Tutum and its secret places hidden from the first glance amazes the imagination with its prehistoric beauty.

History of Tulum

Before Columbus visited these lands, Tulum could be called a real center of Mayan culture. The indigenous people of these places erected magnificent buildings, the architecture of which is striking in its complexity and raises many questions about how this ancient civilization could build such gigantic structures. The pyramids have columns inside, several small windows, an altar and narrow doors. The houses are built on low pedestals. Tribal life revolved around deity worship and many of the attractions and natural wonders then also used in rituals of worship.

Today modern Tulum is conventionally divided into three parts: modern city, resort areas and ruins of ancient settlements.

Why Tulum has such a name

The city itself is located on the seashore on 12-meter cliffs. El Castillo's pyramid rises above the popular sandy beachwhere in ancient times the Indians brought food and jewelry.

Previously, the city had a different name known as Zama. This word means dawn. IN modern history the city bears the name Tulum, which was rather assigned to it because of its characteristic landscape. The fact is that the city is surrounded by rocks, the height of which varies from 3 to 5 meters, and since the word tulum is translated as a wall or a fence, this name aptly described the entire city, protected from all sides by a naturally formed fence.

The ancient Mexican settlement is fraught with many interesting and unusual phenomenarelated to the position of the city, its history and the influence of the elements. TO interesting facts about Tulum the following can be attributed:

  • all year round on the territory of the Riviera a comfortable temperature from 26ᵒ in winter to 31ᵒ in summer;
  • it is here and elsewhere in the Caribbean that there is the largest number of caves - Cenote;
  • the Yucatan Peninsula has the second largest cave system, with a total length of about 318 km;
  • the outskirts of the city offer their guests a closer look at the Sak-Aktun underground river;
  • Tulum was a seaport providing trade links;
  • tulum caves are replete with stalactites, stalagnets, stalagnates, and in one of them the remains of a mastodon were found - an extinct member of the proboscis family.

Tulum landmarks

The ruins of Tulum are 13 well-preserved structures located inside the fortress wall.

Tulum pyramids

If tourists want to see the most popular ancient city Maya tribes, you should go to Chichen Itza, 205 km from Cancun. This city was founded by 500 BC. The majestic pyramids were built so that the priests could watch the sun, moon and stars. Other famous pyramids can be seen in Guatemala.

The highest pyramid is the Kulkan Palace, its height is 25 meters. This pyramid, like others, is distinguished by its stepped design, the sum of the steps of this pyramid is 364. This number is not something arbitrary, it corresponds to the number of days in a light year. Since the tribe's calendar was 18 months, 18 pyramid spans correspond to each of them. In addition, the pyramids themselves, which have four sides, are located in a strict position in relation to the cardinal points. Since the ancient inhabitants of Mexico worshiped the feathered serpent, the reptiles depicted in the statues represent the importance of worship cults for the tribes.

Another mysterious structure is the Karakol Observatory, which has a spiral structure inside the building, a peak that rises directly to the top of the pyramid itself.

An unusual pyramid with a well nearby is a Temple of the Warriors. The priestesses sacrificed, and bodies were thrown into the well to appease the gods.

Archaeological sites of Tulum

The El Castillo pyramid in Tulum served as a landmark and beacon for the ancient inhabitants. The fact is that coastal zone surrounded by a coral reef, due to which many ships were shipwrecked. It is this pyramid that is built opposite the only safe passage past the reefs. Torches burned here at night, making it a permanent landmark.

Tulum underground river

The famous underground river Tulum is fraught with many mysteries that have been discovered by curious explorers for tens and even hundreds of years. One of these discoveries was the Sak-Aktun underground river, the discovery of which led to the exploration of a huge system of caves.

The name of the river comes from the name of the cave, which translates as the White Cave. It is named White because of the fact that the main rock is limestone. Its depth is almost 128 meters. The cave has a karst appearance and the entire territory of the peninsula abounds in such caves. Such unique formations are called cenotes, they were obtained as a result of the fact that the vaulted ceiling of the caves collapsed due to the influence of groundwater. The word cenote took its name from the language of the local tribe and comes from the word tsonot or well, because the caves really resemble huge wells.

Most of the caves are filled with water, and only about 6 km away are non-flooded galleries full of stalactites and stalagnites. The first discoveries were made in 1987, and by 2012 all connections between cenotes had been found, making the cave system the second largest in the world. At a depth of 57 meters of one of the cenotes, underwater researchers discovered the skeleton of a mastodon. Now in the waters of the river there are no living creatures due to the composition of the water, since here it is mineral and unsuitable for the life of underwater inhabitants

Tulum hotels and shopping

The Riviera offers cozy and comfortable hotels with breathtaking ocean views. There are a lot of such hotels, but they are all small, on average 10-15 rooms, which fits very well into local flavor... The average daily rate is $ 10, while a room in a luxury bungalow will cost $ 80.

You can entertain and pamper yourself with new purchases and gifts for loved ones on the main street of the city - Avenida Tulum. Although the purchase price is high, the price can be nearly doubled, especially if the seller is an Indian. Good advice for tourists: it is best to find a store with a rich assortment and make a lot of purchases there at once, in which case you can definitely count on a big discount.

Jewelry stores are especially popular, where products with precious stones by reasonable price and good quality.

How to get there

Akumal town is perfect for those who love small towns, preferring a quiet vacation and ecological tourism. Akumal provides an excellent opportunity to relax in silence, swim in the sea, while having the opportunity to easily get to historical sites.

At the entrance to Akumal, you will be greeted by a statue of Gonzalo Guerrero, the last person in the history of the city. In 1513 a Spanish ship was shipwrecked off the coast. The 20 surviving sailors were taken prisoner by the Mayan people. Many trials fell to their lot, and only two of the prisoners survived. One of them took a liking to a local princess and married her. The offspring of the princess and Gonzalo became the first mestizo in the land of Mexico.

On the beaches of Akumal, you can have a great time basking in the hot rays of the sun, and diving in the water to explore the rich fauna of these places. Eels, barracudas and even green turtles are found here. By the way, the name of the city from the Mayan language is translated as “place of turtles”. Moving away from the coast literally three hundred meters, you can see how turtles "graze" on the reefs, peacefully nibbling algae. Visibility in the lagoon is good, but you should equip yourself with a mask and fins to go in search of turtles and rays.

Temple of winds

Among the ruins of the ancient mayan city Tulum is a unique structure, whose purpose is striking even today, after thousands of years. This building is called the Temple of the Winds. It is located on a cliff, practically on the seashore. The mysterious Mayan tribe built it as a warning for an impending hurricane. As soon as the wind intensified, the temple began to "whistle" - the wind passed through specially designed holes in the upper part of the temple. The stronger the wind, the louder the whistle. It was thanks to the Temple of the Wind that the residents of the city of Tulum learned about the imminent hurricane and hid behind the outer city wall in time.

The Mayan civilization has long taken its place on the pages of history, and their creation - the Temple of the Winds - continues to work to this day. It is said that his whistle was clearly audible in 1995, when Hurricane Roxanne hit the coast.

Diving takes place in small groups. One Cenote Dos Ojos instructor-guide usually has no more than four people. Maximum depth diving into underwater caves - thirty meters.

The diving club works with both experienced divers and beginners. For beginners, an experienced instructor Dos Ojos will explain all the nuances of diving and help them cope with scuba diving. All divers who come to Cenote Dos Ojos have accident insurance for their lives. However, in the entire history of the diving club, not a single emergency happened to its visitors.

One of the amazing and beautiful places in Mexico - the Sian Kaan nature reserve, located on east coast Yucatan Peninsula.

The reserve was opened in 1986 to preserve local flora and fauna, and in 1987 it was recognized by UNESCO as a site world heritage... The name Sian Ka'an was given to these territories by the Maya Indians, which means “the sky begins there”. The reserve is very rich in flora and fauna, and along the coast stretches a coral barrier reef - the second largest in the world after the Australian one. In addition to natural beauty, tourists are attracted by archaeological excavations at the site of ancient Mayan cities, where artifacts up to 2000 years old were found.

Lake Crystal

Lake Crystal is the so-called cenote, that is, a natural reservoir formed as a result of erosion of rocks. The purest cenote Krystal, surrounded by lush tropical vegetation, is the perfect swimming pool.

The name of the Crystal lake was not given by chance. It emphasizes the exceptional purity of the water. Surrounded by lush palms and exotic birds, of which there are many, it is very reminiscent of paradise. Transparent water allows you to see everything that happens in the water column. This reservoir, like others of its kind, is best suited for swimming and scuba diving.

Typically, there is a small entrance fee to get to the cenotes. There are also some rules to follow here. For example, do not use sunscreenas it can damage the sensitive ecosystem.
