Justification of social significance

50 years ago In 1967, President Jazz-Club "Svadrat" Nathan Leithes organized the first "jazz steamer" in the country, which gathered musicians and club members. Jazz on the steamers, the musicians began to play at the beginning of the last century even during the time of Louis Armstrong in New Orleans, so the idea of reviving concerts on the Neva accounted for everyone. Since then, annually once for the season, the jazz club arranged such steamers, to get to which everyone managed to work.

In 2001, we tried to make an additional commercial flight for all. I liked the idea and passed. In 2003, 24 "jazz steamers" were organized, and for 2004 - already 50.

From 2006 to 2010, with the support of the Committee on Culture of St. Petersburg, we held 5 year festivals on the jazz ship on the Neva, on which David Golobekin, Igor Butman, Andrei Kondakov, French musician Olivier Ker Urio, Sergey Manukyan, orchestra / Gennady Holstein, Alexey Kuznetsov and Vladimir Danilin, French Trumpeter Jean-Lu Longon, vocalist from San Francisco Kim Naley, and many other musicians.

History of the emergence of jazz steamboats

Fifty years ago In 1967, President Jazz-club "Svadrat" Nathan Leithes offered a Komsomol organization, which then fenced the club, note the activists by the ride on the motor ship. Jazz on the steamers originated during the time of Louis Armstrong in New Orleans, so for the jazz life of the city on the Neva it was very symbolic. Since then, every year, once in the summer, the club organized a "jazz steamer", which only club members and musicians could get. President Jazz - Club "Square" Nathan Leithes:

The first jazz steamer was organized in the 67th year. We then collaborated with Komsomol. They needed activists somehow note - then we practically did everything for free, "and they came up with this form: once a year, at the end of the season they bought a bus, called all this" on the roads of labor glory "and carried somewhere in Riga , Tallinn. One day I sit at my job on my job - then I worked in the "box", an engineer, and they are suited to me and say: "Do not want to ride in the steamer in white nights?" I say: "What is there?" I have been told: "There is. There is such a steamer. At twelve night leaves, at six in the morning comes. "

I say: "Of course I want. Where?" So the steamer appeared. He left at night into the bay of six hours. We could arrange a night jam on it. And the night jams then forbidden. Then, in general, after eleven, nothing could be done. In addition, we knew that at the time of the formation of Jazz, many musicians played by steamboats. In short, the steamer really wanted to do. The first steamer was called "Ohm." In the Palace of Culture, piano hire, signed the paper that we would not put it near the battery, brought first to me home, then on a steamer.

On the steamer then only members of the club went?

Yes. Only club members. The club was big. In addition to musicians, a person 30 - 40 amateur activists who produced magazines, lectures were carried out. And formally in the club there was a man of 80 - 100. The steamer was once a year, so it rushed terribly. It was necessary to organize the club to organize a club so that no one could climb on him from other sides of him. Let's go back in six in the morning, people who have not played on a steamer, come to the pier, and let's play there. Then other people call the police, the police arrive, spills with guys with water from the hose. In general, there was a lot of fun ...

Until 1976, the jazz club rented the ship of the project "OM", which was departed from Tuchkov's bridge and followed the bay. Then began to lease cruise shipswho walked on about. Valaam and Kizhi. The motor ship managed to take during the distance between flights. Walked up the Neva to Petrolness.

Since the end of the 80s, the beginning of the 90s, jazz flights moved to the motor ship "Moscow", in which at that time the chairs and tables were installed on the floor (as in trains) with a narrow pass between them. It was very uncomfortable. On the front site, where the musicians were located, these chairs had to unscrew and shoot.

Now it is already difficult to imagine, as the decks are converted to the cabin cafe, double-glazed windows are installed on the windows. Now two hours of "Nevsky" jazz are available absolutely to everyone. Yes, and the cost of the ticket is relatively low for a two-hour musical walk through the Neva in the city center with access to the Finnish Bay. Dixieland lovers occupy places on the upper deck. For those who are interested in music more comprehensive and modern, choose tables on the first floor. Here, below is the bar.

Jazz in New Orleans

How did the music on river steamers appear? The fact is that at the beginning of the 20th century, there are usually many blacks, vagrants, workers and other people in New Orleans in New Orleans. As a rule, almost half of this diverter was playing on the guitars, and all the others sang. When these steamers sailed into their next flight along the river, the simple people were on the lower deck, and white passengers, players and other know - on top. But as soon as people from the top deck heard the game and singing blacks, they immediately went down, so they were interested. And it was precisely this that gave Strandhus, the owner of the shipping company is a good idea to keep the orchestra on the vapor. The steam business was then in the hands of the Rhyu Brothers, Joseph, John and Verne Strakfus. Due to competition with railways Market's conjuncture has worsened and Streams decided to turn part of their steamers into progressive vessels.

These shipping concerts began in the 1900s on such Sudak as "J. S." And "Bald Eagle", and by 1916-17, almost all the vapors had already been music. One of the most interesting events in New Orleans was the performance of Fait Marebla, which began daily at seven o'clock in the early evening shopping pier, so that people find out that steamers go on excursions. One day, Faith heard the game of the young Louis Armstrong and invited him to his orchestra. Work in the ship's orchestra has become an irreplaceable school for Armstrong. Playing every day almost without days off, he scored a wonderful shape. Since he had all the time to deal with notes, he learned to read decently from the leaf. Remembers Tatti Singleton: "When a musician got a job on a ship at Fait Mabble, we usually spoke in New Orleans:" Oh, this guy went to the conservatory, "because Faith himself was a wonderful musician, and people who worked with him , I should have played really good. ... The most interesting event did not steamers were the night on Monday, when there were dancing for blacks. In addition, every night drove up and down the river for some time, and then returned back. They were Brightly lit, and loud music rushed with them. "

In 2003, Yuri Moiseyev, Percussionist of the ensemble of David Golhakhekina, managed to visit New Orleans, that's what he told:

it big cityWhich, like other cities, is divided into one-story America and business centers. Already arrived at the airport, which is the name of the legendary jazzman Louis Armstrong, you see a huge panel with all the musicians who played and born in New Orleans. And it already configures the musical history of this city.

To the city center you need to go around an hour along one-story buildings on swampy places that are not particularly interesting, but turning to the Up Town and Down Town border, you get into the French Quarter with a lot of entertainment institutions where the legendary condom jazz Hall is located. From the street Dicaker you fall on the embankment near St. Louis Cathedral, Jackson Square, where various musicians play on the streets constantly on the streets, and in one place I saw an elderly lady that played the keyboards beautiful blues. In general, all life musical takes place in this French quarter.

On the embankment, where the three ships of Natchez, Cajun Queen and Creole Queen are always a queue of those who want to get to jazz walks on Mississippi. Walk last two hours and costs it about 25 - 30 dollars. If you take a ticket with lunch, then it costs 70 - 80 dollars. While people stand in line, they can listen to music, since an old steam body is installed on the upper deck of steam, on which the complete black woman performs various melodies. It looks spectacular, since when you press the key from a specific tube, the steam fountain beats together with the sound. After landing, the steamer despair, goes down the river, then unfolds and returns back to the landing site. Mississippi Pretty wide river, much wider the Neva, the water is very muddy, and there are no special attractions on the shores of the city.

On March 23, the legendary St. Petersburg jazz club with a fifty-year history - "Square" - found his new home in the creative cluster of Artmuz. About how difficult the creative path of jazz pioneers in Russia told Alexey Kozhevnikov, executive director of the jazz club "Square"

Alexey, where did this name come from, "Square"?

"Square" is called improvisation laid in a certain number of clocks in this composition. Jazz Mainstream musicians build their game as a number of squares, improvising on a given topic.

Please tell us about those people who founded the jazz club "Square".

They were enlighteners, passionate jazz lovers. LETI activists organized a jazz section, subsequently an "Square" club, Nathan Leithes was elected president. Unfortunately, he left life in 2013. At one time, it was a big organization, a man of forty. Vitaly Shepshelevich, Sergey Mereschechenko, Yuri Vdovin, Vladimir Fairtag, Georgy Vodyochkin and many others were included in the club's asset. The old guard has now moved away from affairs, many are no longer alive.

The asset of the club was different people mainly from the engineering environment. There were musicians and translators. Smart, educated people. Those who knew well, just engaged in educational activities. The books about jazz in Russian was naturally not, they were looking for them somewhere, brought, translated. Even the copies were reprinted for other jazz lovers. Released newspapers, magazines. Man ten engaged in sending letters. They wrote invitations from hand and sent them to postal addresses, for which Jazz lovers lived, they had such a list. Three people received invitations. It's now jazz a lot, then there were fewer concerts, but I still imagine what kind of work it was.

Of course, in those days, all this was not so easy to do. Nathan told a funny thing in one of his interviews. In 1964, the then Police conducted a study, as a result of which they found out that 70% of crimes are accomplished on private apartments. Khrushchev by this time was already kind of housing. And the party ordered Komsomol and trade unions to lure young people from apartments to the public. They invited a jazz club, offered to make a festival. He went well. Spent the second. And then, when the time of the Third Festival came, he was taken, and canceled. Such was the Soviet Journal of Atlas, all the foreign posts of TASS published in it, so they were published that amateur associations in Czechoslovakia became more influential than Komsomol. Naturally, the Soviet government could not be so allowed.

That is, the "square" is the "jazz lovers society"?

Yes, Jazz AppReciation Society. These are not just clubs, where people come to drink, relax, listen to music. Here people unites the idea of common interest. In America, such institutions exist in prosperity. In St. Petersburg, almost all the musicians of several generations passed through jams and festivals "Square".

In 1958, "D-58" was created, the first Soviet jazz club, which then was re-formated to the LG club, then Lay ... "Square" passed through many changes for his fifty-year-old history. And how many places he changed! And now, finally, he gained his house in Artmuse.

And what is jazz steamats?

Steamboats are an old club tradition, they began to do in 1967. One ship for the summer earlier was spent, in the white night, the ship was filmed, there were musicians and their friends, about two hundred people. Everyone could not get there often. Did two flights, for those who waited on the shore. Nathan told that when there were white nights, good weather, people are open to the windows, the music came to them from the ship, and they began to call the police. Militia came, poured the musicians with water from the hose, accelerated everyone. Not once it was. But the captains who drove jazzmen treated them with sympathy.

And in 2001, we made a flight not only for "their", but also for the whole public. Until 2004, there was such a situation that people who came to jazz steamer first did not understand what was happening. There was a misunderstanding what jazz. Now the audience has become more educated. People jazz are vividly interested. There are not quite random spectators.

The unprepared listener will be difficult to perceive jazz?

A person should have hots would be the main ideas, for example, when it is clapping, to support the artist in a timely manner. In Jazz, it was accepted that after each solo artist supported. If he played adequately, it is purchased by applause. Not very well played - a little quieter. The usual public is used to applaud at the end of the composition. And the musician is very important that he was supported, he tried. He wants to get the energy of approval. At least such little things. Knowing the minimum repertoire of the Gold Foundation Jazz, of course, will also be a plus. But, in general, we are glad to all music lovers.

And the musicians go to the scene on what principle?

I invite those who were connected with the club. Those who want the club to support. All of them must have a decent musical level. Jazz Club with a fifty-year-old history, on the stage of which almost all the famous jazzmen of St. Petersburg should have kept brand.

Tell us about your plans.

We want to keep the club's traditions, make interesting concerts and festivals, promote jazz. We have the archives that we want to submit to the general public. The club should live, give work to musicians and give the joy to jazz lovers and good music.

On March 23, 2018, we opened a new jazz room "Square", located at: St. Petersburg, 13 line V. O. 70, Creative Center "Artmuza", concluding a lease agreement with the center. This is an opportunity to continue the tradition of the club to popularize and develop jazz music, attract a youth audience. To do this, we provide club musicians a rehearsal base and conduct concerts with the participation of famous musicians of the city and jazzmen coming from other countries and cities. Concerts are focused on mainstream (the main direction of jazz), but will also be attracted by Dixielands and teams performing author's music. We have a wide listener audience: from the older generation, preferring Dixiend, to young people interested in copyright projects and modern sound.
The history of St. Petersburg jazz without a club "Square" is also difficult to imagine how the city itself without the Neva and St. Isaac Cathedral. Our club has existed for more than 50 years and 85% of the masters of the St. Petersburg jazz referred to in the book of V. Fairtag "Jazz from Leningrad to St. Petersburg", grew and established on the "square" scene. It is enough to call such famous people like David Goloshchekin and Igor Butman.
From the mid-60s and before the opening of the philharmonic of jazz music, the club was the only place in the city where regular concert and educational activities were held. In the 90s, the club was located in the DC of the Food Industry Workers up to its closure. The beginning of the new century jazz club "Square" meets in DC them. Kirov. He has an excellent room and the ability to spend the jam session on Mondays in the "art cafe." The disputes of the owners deprive him and this place, and since 2003 the club has no own platform.
AT last years The musicians gathered on Tuesdays on the jazz music in the philharmonic of jazz music, who sheltered jazz club, which was convenient, but deprived of independent activities.
In the summer season, a permanent playground of the club becomes the deck of "jazz steamboats". Regular flights Pass since 2001, and tradition exists from 1967.

Goal

 1. Development and promotion of jazz music in Russia and abroad
 2. Promoting the professional growth of jazz musicians and raising the level of musical culture of jazz lovers

Justification of social significance

Since 1967, Jazz Club organizes concerts on the ship under the brand "jazz steamer", which are in constant popularity. In the past 10 years, we spend about 80 such concerts for the summer season, which are attended by about 8,000 people. A certain part of the audience (about half) was not previously familiar with jazz and for the first time discovering this art. In autumn - the winter season we were forced to interrupt concert - educational activities due to lack of space. Now, if you have a private platform, we will be able to provide musicians a rehearsal base, the possibility of performances, as well as attract young people and students of music educational institutions.
Based on the base of the club, we plan to carry out master classes and speeches of children and young people.
