Geography

Mexico is located in the south of North America and occupies most of Central America. In the north, Mexico borders the United States (namely, the states of California, Arizona, New Mexico and Texas), the length of the border is 3141 km. To the east of the city of Ciudad Juarez to the Gulf of Mexico, the border runs along the winding Rio Grande River. Several natural and man-made markers define the US border west from Ciudad Juarez to the Pacific Ocean.
From the west and south, Mexico is washed by the Pacific Ocean, and from the east - by the Gulf of Mexico and the Caribbean Sea. In the southeast, Mexico borders Guatemala (871 km) and Belize (251 km). Mexico is the northern part Latin America and the most populous Spanish speaking country.
Almost the entire territory of Mexico is located on the North American Plate, only the California Peninsula is located on the Pacific Plate and Coconut Plate. In terms of physical geography, the territory east of the Tehuantepec Isthmus, which makes up 12.1% of the country's territory and consists of the five Mexican states of Campeche, Chiapas, Tabasco, Quintana Roo, and Yucatan is located in Central America... In terms of geological structure, the Trans-Mexican Volcanic Belt separates northern region countries. Geopolitically, Mexico is considered a North American country.

The Exclusive Economic Zone of Mexico, which stretches 370 km from both coasts, covers an area of \u200b\u200b2.7 million km². The width of the Mexican landmass decreases as it moves south of the border with the United States, and then bends to the north in the form of the 500-kilometer Yucatan Peninsula, so that the capital of the state of Yucatan, the city of Merida, is located further north than Mexico City or Guadalajara.

Each state has its own constitution and a governor who is elected by direct universal suffrage.

Within the country, you can also get around by bus. There are luxury and middle class buses. The fare differs quite strongly in them. Also developed a network railwaysbut the quality of travel in them is rather poor.
Buses and route taxis run inside the cities. Mexico City has a metro that is open on weekdays and Sundays from 5 am to 12:30 am, and on Saturday until 1:30 am. Alternatively, you can take a taxi. It is best to call a car from the hotel, these taxis are equipped with meters.
To rent a car, you must have credit card

The shops

The current law when shopping in Mexico is "quality at buyer's risk", which leaves many tourists wary of suspicious sellers. Always keep this principle in your head. In Mexico, you can buy everything that has something to do with frogs, from figurines in various poses and costumes, to high-quality silverware. Handicrafts, clothing and folk traditions vary from region to region, but pottery, self-woven fabrics, hammocks and baskets are always the best souvenirs from Mexico. Don't ignore the very popular hand-painted wooden animal figures called alebrijes. These figurines usually feature motifs from the myths of Mexico.
Copper, onyx, straw and leather goods are also in high demand, but pay close attention to quality, unless quality is the main thing you need. Fine silver must have a fineness of at least "925" (by law), but you will never know if common iron is silver plated. Explore the differences between synthetic colors (vibrant) and natural colors (calmer) when shopping for wool blankets. It's fun to choose and buy local toys, but remember that they don't meet safety regulations and check for any loose parts or sharp edges, especially if the toys are intended as a gift for children. High quality musical instruments (especially strings or percussion) can also be found here.
Be vigilant when purchasing branded products, especially if prices are too low, some may be made without a manufacturer's license. If this is the case, then the products may be confiscated at customs. Tortoise shell goods, live turtles, alligators and jaguar leather goods will also be confiscated upon arrival in many countries. Souvenirs made from quetzali feathers or sea turtles are illegal in Mexico, as are any archaeological exhibits. In addition to fines, you can get a serious prison sentence.

Store opening hours: Monday to Saturday from 9:00 to 20:00. Some shops close for a couple of hours in the afternoon - for lunch.
Banking hours: Monday to Friday from 9:00 to 13:30. Some branches in big cities can work on Saturday, and during the week - until 17:00.

In Mexico, there is true freedom of speech. And residents communicate with each other without any special restrictions. However, with unfamiliar people or newcomers, Mexicans are very polite and follow all the rules of etiquette.
Most of the inhabitants of the country are very clean. It is believed that clothes should be neat, new and always clean. It is customary to wear a tie for business meetings.
Abortion is either forbidden or strongly discouraged here. Therefore, in many families, three or more children are the norm. There is a special attitude towards children, they are pampered in every possible way and are allowed a lot. In addition, there is a cult of motherhood in Mexico, mother is a sacred concept for a Mexican. Mother's Day is widely celebrated on May 10.
In general, a Mexican woman has a status that is not equal to that of a man. Thus, there are few women in business, although there is a tendency for their influence to grow. The family is also headed by a man.
In their free time, Mexicans go to the movies, take their children to the circus, or play golf, football, horse riding, hunting, diving, etc. nightlife only tourist centers are famous.

Behavior rules
When acquaintance is most often used an intermediary in the form of a mutual friend. You should introduce yourself in detail, after which a hug is laid. Business cards are widespread. When addressing, titles (senior) and the polite pronoun "you" are often used. If communication between companions takes place on "you", then those accompanying them also talk to each other.
There are two types of addresses to women: senora - "married woman" and senorita - "girl". If a woman's marital status is unknown, it would be more polite to refer to her as a senorita. A woman has the right to expect that a door will be opened in front of her, a cigarette will be lit, etc., this is quite natural.
The greeting is done in the form of a handshake or a kiss on the cheek. When greeting a woman in informal communication, they do both at the same time. Communication is open, with frequent pats on the shoulder, etc.
Excessive compliments are considered normal courtesies in Mexico, and impolite behavior can be very offensive. Gratitude is also usually expressed at length and excessively. Mexicans don't like harsh denials or rejections.
The Mexicans are supposed to discuss extraneous topics for a long time in a conversation (both direct and telephone) before moving on to the main thing.
Residents of the country consume alcoholic beverages in moderation, especially in cities. It is undesirable to appear drunk in a public place. However, smoking is usually not restricted in any way.
When visiting, you need to remember that in Mexican houses one does not take off his shoes, regardless of the weather outside. Gifts are frequent, and quite rich, but not at the first meeting. Flowers as a gift are always welcome, but the bouquet should be large, no less than a dozen flowers.
At the table, Mexicans behave in a very civilized manner, observe etiquette requirements. The right to wine tasting is provided to the guest. It is better to pronounce toasts in Spanish, it will win over the hosts to the guest. Foods such as tacos or tortillas are eaten by hand, and it is snobbish to try to use cutlery.

Mexico (officially the United Mexican States) is a state in North America, the most northern country Latin America. The government of Mexico is the same as the government of the United States. The capital of Mexico is Mexico City.

The official currency of Mexico is the Mexican peso. It can be obtained at any exchange office or ATM.

The official language is Spanish, which is spoken by 96% of the population. The remaining 4% speak Indian languages. English language common only in the capital, and even then not everyone speaks it. Therefore, when going to Mexico (especially to small cities), I advise you to take care of the language in advance and learn a few common phrases that will allow you not to stay hungry during the trip.

Tourists should pay special attention to safety in this country. The central states are considered the least dangerous. The most dangerous states where I would not advise you to go are the northern ones, bordering the USA - Tijuana, Loredo, Ciudad Juarez. The crime situation in the country began to increase in 2006, when conflicts between unofficial drug dealing organizations intensified. The press dubbed this process as the "drug war in Mexico." When traveling in Mexico, it is not recommended to use unofficial taxis, while going for a walk to wear expensive jewelry. Also, tourists are advised to move only along the main streets, the most visited and return to the hotel after midnight. The local population is quite friendly towards tourists. But the dark streets are worth wary of.

The nature of Mexico is very diverse. In one country you will find volcanoes, snow-capped mountain peaks, tropical resorts with white sand and blue oceans, waterfalls, caves filled with stalactites and stalagnites, and much more. Of particular interest are underground decks - cenotes. This is a diving paradise. Cenotes are found only on the Yucatan Island. There are more than 6,000 of them. Some cenotes are equipped for bathing tourists, others have not been studied at all. The water in cenotes is crystal clear. The most popular of them are Ik-Kil (located 3 km from Chichen Itza), Iks-Kanche, cenotes of Sachi, Shkeken (6.5 km from Valladoldda).

Mexico is not only a country with beautiful nature... Do not forget that the huge heritage of the Indians is concentrated here. Going to Mexico, take a couple of days to visit the pyramids. There are several historical zones in the country, in which whole pyramid complexes are located. One of these zones is located near the capital of Mexico City - Teotiucan. Here you will get acquainted with the majestic buildings of the Incas and plunge into a mysterious city founded before our era. Mexico is home to the second largest pyramid in the world - the Cholula pyramids. It is almost 1.5 kilometers in diameter! It was partially excavated. Almost the entire pyramid is covered with earth, at its top is a Catholic church built by the Spaniards during the conquest of the country. The archaeologists decided not to completely excavate the pyramid, so as not to destroy the historic temple and the part of the city that has already been built on it. This creation is worth seeing!

Temazcal is another tourist attraction in Mexico. These are Indian dry baths. They are small clay houses, round in shape. Inside, in the center of the house, there is usually a volcanic stone, which gives steam. These baths are considered curative. They were often visited by shamans during their rituals.

Mexico Holidays

Bullfighting (bullfight) ... It is especially popular in the north of Mexico and in Veracruz. If you want to go to the bullfight, I advise you to visit the country between November and April.

Mariachi performances - are held everywhere all year round. Mariachi are small musical groups dressed in national costumes. They usually play traditional Mexican or country music. They can be found on city squares, on large avenues or in cafes. Often such groups are ordered for a wedding or birthday. If desired, they can order their favorite song for a fee. Mariachi can be found not only in Mexico, but also in other regions of Latin America.

The day of the Dead - perhaps the most extraordinary, but at the same time the brightest and most widely celebrated holiday in the country. It is celebrated on the first two days of November. On this day, Mexicans remember all the dead. According to legend, on this day, the souls of the dead visit the house. To accept them properly, people decorate the house with photographs of the dead, flowers, candles. On this day in shops you can find statues of skeletons, sugar skulls. It is a joyous holiday, often accompanied by carnivals.

Carnivals - in different regions of Mexico, they take place in different timestarting from February to March. People dress up in different costumes, put on masks, which, according to legends, should scare away bad spirits, and walk along the streets of the city, while dancing.

Mexican cuisine

Mexicans are a very hot people. They usually use hot spices, chili peppers or sauces in their dishes. If you are not a fan of spicy foods, you should say “no picanto” when buying food. Even if the dish is declared as ordinary in its spiciness, it will definitely be with chili. Pepper is everywhere: in soups, corn, porridges. Mexican food and drinks are very varied and very different from those familiar to our stomach. It's worth trying a little of everything.

National dishes of Mexico:

Tortilla - A thin, usually corn tortilla, which is eaten in Mexico instead of bread. Meat is often wrapped in it (it turns out another dish - burrito ) or vegetables.

Quesadilla - a tortilla with melted cheese.

Fajita - grilled beef with slices of tomatoes, peppers and onions.

Arrachcher - beef with rice or beans.

Tamale - cornmeal pies stuffed with meat, cheese, pepper, wrapped in corn leaves.

Corn cobs - sold everywhere. There are three varieties of corn: yellow, white and black. Usually corn is boiled and, at the customer's request, rubbed with salt, lime, mayonnaise, pepper or sprinkled with cheese. It turns out very tasty!

The drinks:

Tequila, pulque, mezcal, beer, chelada (beer with salt and lime juice) and michelada (beer with salt, lime and pepper).

Also, one of the delicacies for the Mexican is dried grasshoppers. They are usually consumed with beer, before being poured abundantly with lime juice. I'll tell you the taste for an amateur, but it's worth a try.

Mexico is a country with an interesting culture and flavor. Here you will not have time to get bored. And what exactly to see in Mexico and where to go - read further in this section.

Mexicans stand out for their love of music. The country has a huge number of folk musicians - mariaches. Uniting into original ensembles, they perform on the streets and squares, in hotels and restaurants, at village festivals and official events. Even when Mexicans celebrate All Saints' Day or the Feast of the Dead, they are not abandoned by the cheerfulness that takes place annually on November 2. They turned him into a cheerful jubilation of life over death. At this holiday, the main symbol is the human skull, which the Mexicans try to portray as funny as possible.
